MAGICAL THINKING Overcome unspoken expectations and build a happier marriage.

In every marriage, each spouse has their own set of expectations, either spoken or unspoken. If you and your spouse have experienced conflict over your expectations for one another, you aren’t alone. Expectations go hand-in-hand with something we call magical thinking. Expectations and magical thinking can impact your spouse in a variety of ways that ultimately strain your relationship.

Unspoken Expectations Strain Marriages

While it’s not a bad thing to expect positive things from your relationship, having unspoken expectations between the two of you can really put a damper on your marriage. That’s because unspoken expectations inevitably lead to conflict.

When we have expectations of our spouse that we do not voice, they are unlikely to be able to fulfill it. And when our expectations go unfulfilled, we grow increasingly resentful. Resentment can lead us to internalize our frustrations, until one day, they finally explode on our unsuspecting spouse. Unspoken expectations can also lead to magical thinking.

Magical Thinking Leads to Assumptions

Have you said something to your spouse like, “I shouldn’t have to ask you to take the laundry to the laundry room! You should just see it and know it needs to be done!” Or, “Why do you need to hear that I love you all the time? Aren’t my actions clear enough?”

Making assumptions leads to broken expectations and hard feelings. In fact, it can perpetuate a cycle of unmet expectations that we become increasingly unwilling to voice. The truth is, none of us are mind-readers. It’s unrealistic to expect one another to simply absorb and understand what the other wants. So how do we overcome this problem?

Communicate About Expectations

Good communication is one of the most important features of a strong marriage. If you’re struggling with the expectations you have for one another, then it’s time to get back to your core communication.

Improving your communication means you will be able to not only talk about the things you’d like to see in your relationship, it will also help you weed out those pesky magical thoughts and assumptions that are feeding your unmet expectations.

Be gentle with one another as you go through this process, and remember that we are all human.

If only it were that simple. We all know how easily trust can be broken in relationships. When it comes to parenting, we often have a hard time stepping back and trusting our children to make the right decisions. Here are some suggestions to help build trust with your child.

Practice trust

Listening to your child goes a long way. Just listen when they try to tell you something. This will clue you into their rhythms and communication styles. But the bigger benefit from listening?

Your child will want to talk to you.

Be realistic

When your child lies, don’t freak out and worry that this means he’s going to end up in jail for the rest of his life. Trust is a process. Your child will have to break a little trust, here and there, and then gain from the experience of earning it back. Be patient and realistic when trust is broken.

Don’t take it personally

Remember, your kids are learning. If your child tells a lie, it doesn’t mean you’re a bad parent. Separate your worth from your child’s behavior. You’ll be able to handle the situation with a lot more clarity that way.

Just like you teach about stranger danger, inappropriate touching, drugs, and bullying, you should be having discussions about trust. Honesty is something that needs to be taught as a regular part of family conversations.

Pimm’s No. 1 3/4 c. ginger ale 1/2 c. lemonade 1 tbsp. freshly chopped ginger For Garnish Mint leaves Orange slices Sliced strawberries Cucumber slices DIRECTIONS In a large blender, combine ice, Pimm’s, ginger ale, lemonade, and ginger and blend until smooth. Pour into glasses and garnish with mint and fruit.

Mix reserved orange juice and rum with 2 tbsp. grenadine. Slowly pour into each glass so it settles on the bottom, creating an ombré effect. Garnish with lime slices.

Strategies to trust yourself Self-trust means nurturing an empowered attitude, sticking to your principles, and showing up fully for yourself and others. When you follow through with these actions over time, you will learn how to trust in yourself—and invite others to do the same. Here are some ways you can build self-trust:

1. Start with self-compassion

Is negative self-talk, undermining your confidence? Everyone has an internal dialogue. Sometimes your inner voice tells you that your vision or dreams are stupid or unattainable. When you make a mistake, say or do something you regret, the inner voice typically has a lot to say — none of it kind or helpful. It’s time to transform your inner critic into a compassionate friend.

2. Give yourself permission
