EDITOR LETTER: FRANCES T. MCGRIER

Dear Readers, There are changes that are arising. November 1 will begin the start of something new. Many individuals set goals to change things in their lives to better themselves starting January 1 each year. I figured we get a head start. In each issue, we are going to cover the positive thoughts from our golden children letters sent in from all over the world. On page eleven (11) we will present a platform of their Golden words. Often we highlight their looks in the pages of Golden, a glimpse of their personalities on the runway but I would love to hear their golden thoughts.

Harlem born & raised Rashawna Brown is now bringing her seasoning secrets, warmhearted spirit, in depth love of family, motherly spice and soul to you in each issue of Golden Magazine. Get ready for “Cooking Meals with Muffin”...

1. Who taught you how to cook? My grandmother and my cousin’s grandmother (Who’s like a grandmother to me) Ms. Mack. 2. When did you know you can cook? When I was 18 years old, we use to have regular weekend gatherings. I cooked 3 dishes and a friend complimented

me on the food. She thought Ms. Mack cooked it because she was a excellent cook. The friend thought Ms. Mack cooked the food, but Ms. Mack said, “That’s not my doing baby! “Muff Puff” that’s what she called me, cooked that!” That’s when I was a self proclaimed “real cook”, we laughed hard but was very serious.

GOLDEN MAG | 17

Tynia & London “Mommy & Daughter” Moguls share their SHINE in Glossy world of Butterfly Kisses! 1. How did the idea of Butterfly Kisses Lip Gloss come about? I am an obsessive lipgloss and lipstick lover, I decided to launch this brand based on my obsession and also because I was investing in other people’s brands. I told myself why not put out your own brand of cosmetics. I took something I loved and turned it into a business. 2. Where did the name derive from? Since I was a child I have always loved butterflies, I have fourteen butterfly tattoos. So I figured why not combined the two butterflies and lipgloss which goes on your lips. Lol 3. Who has been your greatest inspiration? (Question for you & London) London says Justine Skye inspires her because she reminds her of herself being brown skin. And I inspire her for doing all I do for her and her brother. My greatest inspiration has been ALL women any and all entrepreneurs that work hard for and at their brands. 4. How has being an entrepreneur affected your

family life being partners with your daughter? And her life as a young entrepreneur? It affects us in small ways like agreeing on suitable names for the glosses and suitable age appropriate colors for her brand. It has affected her in ways like taking it serious at first. Now she’s serious and is focused on the brand and even suggest ways and ideas of selling. She gives different marketing tips. 5. What motivates you & London? We follow on social media other cosmetics brands and we see how well they are doing and that makes us want to do more and better not better than anyone else do better than what we are doing. 6. How do you generate new ideas for Butterfly Kisses? I think from a customer perspective, I say to myself what would make me or convince me to buy a product. I in other words sell to myself what type of advertisement would get me to buy this product. 7. How do you define success? (Question for you & London) I don’t believe you can define success, success is the work you put in and surely the work you put into your own company. London says doing good at your job lol.

GOLDEN MAG | 23

8. Social media is buzzing about Butterfly Kisses, How did you build a successful customer base? I have a good product I am not selling something I am not wearing myself. People are seeing this product on me. Also it has truly been word of mouth, on top of me being on social media like a hawk with advertising/ promoting I am my marketing team. Although I have a marketing team I’m also on social media just as much as them if not more. 9. What’s your favorite Butterfly Kisses color and why? My favorite is Butterfly kisses, it’s a natural tone that gives a hint of color with a nice shine. 10. I love the names of Butterfly Kisses lip gloss colors. So creative, how did you come up with the color names? The names are based on a combination of things like places I have lived and things that are a reflection of me as a person. 11. What has been your most satisfying moment in business? The actual launch itself, seeing my vision come to life after a year of frustration dedication commitment hard work and investment. To actually see it come full circle was amazing like giving birth all over agin for the third time. 12. How do you go about marketing your business? I have a marketing company that I use in addition to myself. 13. If you can invent one weird color and name is for Butterfly Kisses Lip gloss, what would it

24 | GOLDEN MAG

be? (Question for London) London says white with purple dots lol, I would create a nice grey like the Honda Accord color called graphite it’s like a special black with shimmer. 14. What are your hobbies? What do you do in your daily day non-work time? What makes you happy?(Question for you & London) London says being with my friends and dancing. I love recreational activities like playing paint ball and riding ATV’s. I love cooking for family and friends also. 15. Excluding yours, what lip gloss company or cosmetic business do you admire the most? I absolutely respect La La Anthony Motives brand. 16. Where do you see Butterfly Kisses Lipgloss in 3 years? I would love to see my glosses in Sephora, Target, Walmart, all the chain stores I mean the ultimate goal would be department stores but I am willing to take baby steps. I do set realistic goals for myself, however those would be ultimate goal. children interested in reading is to give them books that may peak their interest.

Reading for pleasure and information develops reading interests and offers children the opportunity to practice their reading skills in meaningful ways. Parents of children should provide reading materials in the home that arouse curiosity or extend their child’s natural interest in the world around them. Current research in reading reveals three important considerations for parents and teachers: Children who read, and read widely, become better readers. Reading and writing are complementary skills. Parents are important to children both as role models and as supporters of their efforts.

are a fun way to help kids establish and show their creative side. In order to help them be creative it’s important as parents that we provide activities that are children can participate in. Arts and Crafts are something that can be done at the house and doesn’t require many materials. Whether it’s painting, cooking, blocks, etc, it can be constructed into a craft building exercise with your child. There are local programs in your city that will help your child develop their art skills that are available online. There are many benefits that come from arts and crafts. It’s important to understand how these benefits not only help you the Parent but most importantly helps your child.. According to the North Shore Pediatric Therapy the benefits for arts and crafts are: ġ ƞưþɉńȖþưȻ ǗǗȖĵƞLJþɉƞǗLJř Crafts such as coloring, drawing, cutting, all require your child to use both of their hands together. This skill is important in other areas of their lives as they continue to grow, such as writing, tying shoes, typing and so much more! ġȻGƞLJńȻ ǗɉǗȖȻ ǗǗȖĵƞLJþɉƞǗLJř In order to draw shapes, cut patterns, and hand writing, your child is required to use their fine motor coordination. These skills similarly translate to other areas of their lives, such as dressing, eating, and in the academic setting. ġȻ²ńưũƜªńƄɟưþɉƞǗLJř Crafts that require drying require waiting! This is a great lesson for your child to demonstrate self-control and patience. Also, as

always things might not go exactly as we hoped! Crafts are a great way to promote flexibility in your child. There is no right or wrong way in exploring one’s own creativity! ġȻ²ńưũƜńȞɉńńƼȻēǗǗȞɉńȖř Although we want to challenge our kids, it is also important to initially choose arts and crafts that are at your child’s skill level. Completing the crafts successfully will give them a great sense of accomplishment and pride. As you and your child begin to explore more crafts, you can add in more and more challenges ġȻ ǗLJĵƞLJƄȻþLJĵȻũɟLJƜ Your kids will love spending time with you and creating something together!

Arts and Crafts is a fun way to help children enjoy being creative and allows them to express themselves. Take the time to allow them be creative and support them in arts and crafts. -Matthew Beatty

WhY Uniforms? by Matthew Beatty

School uniforms are designed to help students dress for success. In order to get a job in the real world an interview must be set up and a suit or dress must be worn. Schools are preparing children to achieve success by making them dress professional. The question has been asked does this limit student expression? Does this limit creativity? I don’t believe that this does. In a world that is categorized by materialistic possessions it allows students to focus on the bigger picture which is passing their grade and gaining an education. What since does it make for a child to have a brand new pair of sneakers or new clothes and they can’t read, or are failing their classes. How a child dresses does impact their future. If you train a child to dress like a success this

will lead them to have a mindset to become successful. Another reason of how uniforms are beneficial in schools is because it does affect self-esteem. This can reduce bullying among those kids whose parents can’t afford to buy new clothes. Instead everyone is dressed the same and won’t have to be considered an outcast. School uniforms shows students that you can look in the mirror and they can be proud of themselves. You don’t have to follow the latest trends to be considered cool. You don’t have to keep making entertainers richer by giving them money on designer outfits that will become old in two weeks when something new comes out. By having uniforms we can teach our kids that no matter what they’re wearing they can look in the mirror and love themselves first.

hildren obtaining a proper nutritional meal are essential in promoting a healthy lifestyle for our kids. In order to make sure that children are getting these healthy meals it’s important to understand what foods they should be eating and how often they should eat healthy. According to Healthy Eating parents should make it easy for kids to choose healthy snacks by keeping fruits and vegetables on hand and ready to eat. Other good snacks include low-fat yogurt, peanut butter and celery, or wholegrain crackers and cheese. Serve lean meats and other good sources of protein, such as fish, eggs, beans, and nuts. Schools are required to serve lunches that meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and provide minimum calorie levels, and one-third of the Recommended Dietary Allowances of protein, vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and calcium.

More than 31 million children participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and over 11 million participate in the School Breakfast Program (SBP). Today, many children are consuming most of their daily calories at school and for many children; food served at school may be the only food they eat regularly.

“Parents should make it easy for kids to choose healthy snacks by keeping fruits and vegetables on hand and ready to eat.” As parents it’s important to make sure our children are balancing these healthy meals at school as well as at home. Let’s show our kids that it’s important to be healthy and teach them why to eat healthy. Eating healthy promotes brain development, avoids future health problems and promotes healthy growth.

omelessness is a serious issue that affects many lives daily. Unfortunately this is an issue that can affect any life at any age. Children that are in poverty are left without meals and homes to live in and are forced to survive. There are programs that are designed to help children that are impoverished. Safe Horizon began its youth and teen homeless program, Streetwork Project in 1984. Our homeless youth and teen program gives at-risk youth a chance to reclaim their lives, their dignity, and self-worth through urgently-needed.

Safe Horizon’s Streetwork Project: + Makes contact with more than 21,000 youth each year through our two drop-in centers, two residential programs, and street outreach services.

+ Distributes over 65,000 meals to young people every year.

+ Offers free legal, medical, and psychiatric services; individual and group counseling; practical and educational assistance; advocacy; HIV prevention; and many other services that homeless youth urgently need, all in a safe, non-judgmental setting.

There are plenty ways to help homeless children. Unfortunately donating money does help children but this isn’t enough. You can become a volunteer or mentor to help homeless children. You can also donate to youth services and youth programs. It does cost to provide meals and shelter for youth so when you donate funds to help these programs you’re providing shelter and meals for impoverished children. Safe Horizon is a program that is based in the NYC area, to find out about local programs in your area this information is available online.
