The Unthank Comedy Festival Summer’s here again, and what better place to spend a long, balmy outdoorsy evening than at the Unthank Comedy Festival? Now in its 14th year, expect to see top comedy stalwarts plus a dusting of new talent. Of course, this being the Unthank, you can enjoy real ales, premium lagers and over 30 wines. There’s also a BBQ every night from 5.00 onwards.

The festival runs for three glorious nights, and brings a huge range of diverse talent to the Unthank’s beer garden! On the first night, Tiffany Stevenson opens, with Geoff Boyz closing. The next night feisty Susan Murray - the only woman to have MC’d decompression gigs for the British Army – appears, followed by a dose of cultish, surreal humour from Arthur Smith. It’ll be a special night.

The festival rounds up on the Thursday night, with Time Out Comedian of the Year (1998), Sean Meo opening the evening, Mancunian Michael Hackett MCing and Marlon Davis rocking the crowd.

Leeway Domestic Violence & Abuse Services An estimated 1/3rd of women, and 1/5th of men, will experience domestic abuse at some point in their lives. It’s a huge figure, and it’s exactly why Leeway, Norfolk’s foremost domestic abuse charity, is such a busy, growing concern.

Leeway was founded in 1974 by a group of women in the Adam and Eve pub, and received a grant from Norwich City Council. Today it employs over 60 full time staff, with roughly 20 volunteers. The charity runs 7 refuge centres in total, across Norfolk. It’s a large organisation, helping over 9,000 men, women, and children each year, and proving indispensable to those who use it, and whose lives have been turned around on account of it.

Most people approach the charity via their telephone support line. Each case is different, but from the telephone support line, callers are directed to a full range of services. First and foremost is how to help get them out of any immediate danger they might be in. Later, the charity helps get lives back on track. Key workers can provide support with a whole host of issues – including housing, schooling, finances, benefits, and safety planning. They also maintain close links with other agencies who specialise in health, legal, debt and education support. Again, everyone’s needs are different. Providing temporary safe accommodation in safe houses is often the start of a long process of extrication from a dangerous situation. Rehabilitation into a self-supporting way of life requires help from many different specialists.

Although the charity was set up by women for women, it now helps men too, and young people. Male victims are supported by specialist male victim workers, whilst children and young people – many of whom have witnessed domestic abuse - receive an equally tailormade approach. A growing issue is adolescent violence and abuse towards parents, for which Leeway runs a programme helping young people to stop their behaviour from becoming criminal.

Leeway goes into schools to talk about domestic abuse, and, in a preventative role, offers parenting support to help mothers understand how their own experiences of domestic abuse has impacted on their own parenting.

Leeway is always on the lookout for volunteers – from helping out with social media, to planning and organising fundraising events, to admin, to working with women and children in safe houses. Sandra Grajales, Faint and Body Painter Sandra Grajales came to the UK from Colombia in 2005 and moved to the Golden Triangle last year. Thirteen years on, with a career first as a learning support assistant in Central London, she’s now established as a leading face and body painter. Her intricate designs put her in a league of her own.

She’s available for the full gamut of face and body painting work, ranging from children’s parties through to summer fetes, as well as film and theatre work, her work is simply the best. If your five-year-old wants to transform into a tiger or a cat, Sandra is your woman. Equally, if you yourself want to become a mermaid for a party and want your body covering in scales – actually the technical term is ‘marbling’ -give her a call.

When we met she had recently returned from Breda. There, she had attended the Efabe convention—six days of face and body painting workshops specialising in blending head wear with face paint so that the separation between the two becomes indistinguishable. It’s highly sophisticated work, and ideal for parties and, well, for masked balls.

Like all expert craftsmen, Sandra uses the best materials. Cheap face paints simply don’t work as well, she explains. The pigments can be weaker; the staying power shorter. She shows me her new paint station – imported from the States. Stacked with paints and brushes, the paint station/ suitcase means she can arrive at a venue and set up shop quickly and easily. All paints are hypoallergenic and water based.

Brushes are kept clean and germ free.

How did she get into face painting? She explains that she arrived from Colombia with degree in journalism, unable to speak English.

To help learn the language, her husband suggested she worked with children. This she did, and one day, a year or so into her new career, she saw a girl at a school fete whose face had been painted. Sandra had never seen an example of face paint before. Immediately, she knew that she had to learn this craft. She researched it, bought paints, and offered her services for free at an afterschool club. Over time she attended workshops and training sessions. She feels that she never stops learning ways to improve her skills.

Even today, she regularly attends face painting and body painting festivals across the world and tells me that the annual World Body Painting Festival takes place in Austria every year, attracting 20,000 visitors. Body painting – and face painting – are equally big in Australia and the States, and even Italy, where regular conventions attract thousands.

Most recently, Sandra did a corporate event for John Lewis and another for the Norwich store of Sofology. She’s also worked for Jamie Oliver, at the London HQ. Her business has taken a hit with the move to Norwich, but now she is seeing it growing. She’s happy to travel around East Anglia for work.

What’s On

Post Festival, summertime Norwich is not the most vibrant place to be when it comes to Arts, but look hard and you’ll find something to keep you busy. First off is the Shakespeare Festival at Norwich Festival (July 13/14). The UK’s leading all male theatre company, The Chamberlain’s Men, return to the Cloisters with The Tempest. Tickets can be bought from the Cathedral website, or via Theatre Royal Box Office.

Also showing at the Cathedral Cloisters and the Castle keep are The Norwich Mystery Plays. The whole event is performed in two parts on consecutive evenings. Plays performed include the East Anglian N Town sequence, and also Norwich’s only remaining Mystery Play, the Grocers’ Play. An exciting project, directed by Peter Beck. July 18-21.

At the Castle Museum, running until November 11th, is ‘Visible Women’. Showcasing female artists from the Castle's contemporary modern collection, where women represent a meagre 7% of the collection, the line up includes Barbara Hepworth, Jo Spence, Gwen John, Maggi Hambling, Frances Kearney and Penny Slinger.

An interesting evening at the Cathedral on June 12 at 7 pm, when Grammy award winning Take 6 legend Dr Cedric Kent takes us through the history of Gospel Music from negro spirituals through to jazz, blues, ragtime to today’s contemporary sounds.

Angela Carter Symposium : Angela Carter in Japan. Sat June 30. A day long symposium examining the impact of Carter’s time spent in Japan on her work. A full programme is on UEA website.

The Inaugural Lorna Sage Memorial Lecture. Opens Thursday June 14 at The Forum at 5.30 with lecture by Modernist Critic Professor Maud Ellman, and continues the next day with lectures by a variety of academics, including Ian Paterson and Claire Wills. Brian Clarke Exhibition at Sainsbury Centre, The Art of Light. June 17—October 14. A truly thrilling show by one of the world’s (possible the world’s) leading stained glass artist. Clarke's work can be seen worldwide - at Riyadh's central airport, Marseille’s Hotel du Department des Bouches-du Rhone, the Pfizer HQ in New York, a Nash Terrace in Regent’s Park. Taking the medium as far as he possibly can, this is innovative, thrilling work that is usually only seen in situ. Hats off to the Sainsbury Centre for getting it together.

The rather wonderful Burning Bush Barn out at Rockland St Mary draws to a close in its present incarnation at the end of August, with, as yet, no firm future plans. Kingfisher Locksmiths Tim Ives took over Kingfisher Locksmiths, at the start of the year from Niels Elffers. We spoke to him during a quick break in his busy day.

So you’re the new face of Kingfisher Locksmiths! What inspired you to take up the trade? How did you come across Niels who took the business over from?

I suppose you could say it was due to a lifelong love of locks and keys. I started an ‘interesting key’ collection when I was 9, based on items found at car boot sales, and I kept them all in a little blue suitcase!

I’d know about Kingfisher since it started and had seen it advertise in the Golden Guide from the beginning! Then, by huge coincidence, Annie (Niel’s wife) was teaching my sister and I French, and Annie introduced me to Niels.

Where did you train?

I trained in Bourneville in Birmingham, at a training centre for locksmiths. I opted for a two week intensive course which I enjoyed very much. I did what’s called an NCFE accredited course in locksmithing. I then started key-cutting and working mainly for family and friends. Taking over Kingfisher has been a great opportunity to get my plans off the ground for running my own business.

Have you always lived in Norwich? I was born in Australia, but my family moved here when I was 5. Since then I’ve become so fond of Norwich that I think of the city as my permanent home, and I’m very interested in its history.

What do you enjoy outside your work? I have a great love of buildings and architecture, and in particular church history – so I’m well placed for that in Norfolk with all its parish churches! Gardening’s another hobby, and from time to time I help out customers with that too.

How do you expect the business to develop? Living in the middle of the Golden Triangle – in Wellington Road, in fact - means I’ve got plenty of potential customers on my doorstep.

People like the idea of my being local so I can easily drop off keys I’ve cut for them at the end of the day, for example. I hope to build up a bank of customers in and around Norwich who know and trust me - I enjoy returning to addresses I’ve been to before to help out, and there’s usually time for a few minutes’ friendly chat. It’s a good feeling going home at the end of the day knowing I’ve sorted people’s problems for them.

What kind of work do you do? I repair and replace locks and can offer advice on upgrading locks to the British standard. I also offer an antique lock repair service where I make keys for antique locks.

Where is the future of locksmithery going?

Electronic swipe cards/ facial recognition/ iris recognition etc? Do you think that there’ll always be a call for the oldfashioned lock? I believe there will always be a need for the mechanical locks because of their reliability. However, the trade is broadening with the introduction of remote control locks etc etc.

Do you fit alarms? No, I don’t.

Can you cut any type of key? Yes, generally, but not keys for cars!

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic— Mini Facelift Surgery Mini face-lift surgery rises in popularity.

Cosmetic medicine and surgery goes through trends. First we had skin only facelifts and then we had an era of deeply invasive tight ‘wind-tunnel’ look type facelifts. Now we are in an era of over-filling the face-although we do not do this at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic.

Whilst non-surgical options such as botox, fillers and lasers are very effective for early signs of facial ageing, they cannot tighten a lot of loose skin. A surgical face or neck-lift entails removing this excess skin. For natural looking results we do not need to overtighten the face and neck. We can just tighten it a little and add some volume with fillers of fat transfer and use lasers to improve the skin. Such combination yields superior results and is much better than too much of fillers or surgery alone.

Why awake face-lift?

Many cosmetic surgery patients do not want to go under general anaesthesia. Being under general anaesthesia can be associated with risks. Nausea, vomiting, breathing problems and sluggishness for days afterwards can result. Those who have been there, say recovering from a general is like being hit by a truck. Operations under general anaesthesia also tend to have prolonged bruising and recovery involved.

How do you perform face-lifts at the Coltishall Clinic?

With our technique, the operation is performed under local anaesthesia with an awake patient. A special solution of saline (salt-water), epinephrine, and lidocaine is injected.

Saline helps to separate the tissues, making the dissection less traumatic for the face and neck. Epinephrine causes the tiny blood vessels in the area to constrict, minimising bleeding and bruising. Lidocaine numbs the area to provide pain control and this lasts for 1218 hours afterwards-reducing the need for painkillers.

What types of facelifts do you offer at the Coltishall Clinic?

Apart from a full range of non-surgical treatments we offer a variety of surgical options mentioned below.

1] One stitch facelift- this is our minimally invasive facelift. It is suitable for younger patients or for those who do not want a full face or neck lift but desire a subtle result at low cost. One small incision on either side of the face is used. The incision is hidden in the hair and lifts the jaw line.

2] Laser face-lift- this is an excellent option when the main consideration is excess fat in chin and jowls. Laser can melt these and also heats the surrounding tissue. This stimulates collagen formation and assists in skin and tissue tightening. The amount of tightening greatly depends on skin type, age, elasticity, general health and other factors.

Lastly, a small amount of fat, which varies from patient to patient, is suctioned away when needed. This can also be used in conjunction with full face or neck lift when more tightness is desired.

3] Mini face and neck lift- we perform a tumescent facelift. It is also known by various other names such as weekend or mini-facelift, S-lift, MACS lift or a facial lipo-lift. Pre medication is recommended to relax the patient. A special local anaesthetic solution is injected in front of the ears. This solution numbs and gently lifts the skin from underlying structures. One side is operated at a time. A small amount of skin in front of and below the ear is removed. The skin is lifted, underlying layer is tightened and finally the skin is repositioned and closed with fine sutures.

4] 3-D facelift – this is a no knife facelift for patients who do not have lot of saggy skin but have lost volume from their face. We take fat from where patients don’t want it such as abdomen or thighs and transfer it to face where it provides a volumetric 3-D face-lift.

5] Neck lift only- this can be performed through a tiny 1-inch incision in the neck crease.

This is suitable for patients with neckbands. Men with turkey neck in particular may be interested in neck only lift where it can be combined with removal of excess skin.

How will I look after surgery?

The change following your surgery can be dramatic. The use of small instruments and fluid to separate the skin from deeper tissue results in a bloodless procedure. There may be minor bruising or swelling for 1-2 days. You may elect to return to work in 2-5 days or wait till your stitches are removed in 7 days. The days of prolonged swelling and bruising and having to hide away for weeks are long gone. Our patients do not generally get any significant bruising.
