Competition: Jenny Lind The name Jenny Lind is familiar to many of us. The that Jenny Lind Children’s Hospital is part of the NNUH, and there’s a local park dedicated to her memory. With all of this, one might assume she was Norfolk born and bred.

In fact, the ‘singing nightingale’ was born in Sweden in 1820. She was one of the most gifted opera singers of the 19th century.

Lind rose to fame in the 1830’s. After a highly successful European career, including two acclaimed London seasons, she retired as a professional opera singer at the young age of 29. But her voice and her name still had mileage, and she decided to put them both to good use by embarking on a series of fund raising concerts. In 1847, and again in 1849, the philanthropic nightingale gave two concerts in Norwich, the profits of which founded the Children’s Hospital. Situated on Pottergate, it was only the second children’s hospital to be built in England at the time, following Great Ormond Street.

In the 1850’s Lind toured the States under the auspices of notorious showman PJ Barnum, giving 93 large concerts. She raised today's equivalent of 11.5 millions dollars, endowing a number of free schools in Sweden.

In the 1850’s, by now married to the German composer Otto Goldschmidt, Lind moved to England where she became Professor of Singing at the Royal ColleCollege of Music. She died in 1887.

Doggy Day Care Heaven with Tom and Toto Tom and Toto doggy day care offers de luxe canine day care at what used to the farmhouse at White Horse Farm. Its facilities cater for up to 30 dogs and occupy the entire ground floor of the old farmhouse, plus surrounding outside spaces. It’s a friendly, warm environment teeming with bounce and wags! The centre opened in January this year and is the offshoot of the wellestablished Norwich based dog walking company, Tom and Toto, who regularly exercise dogs in city locations such Marston Marshes, Whitlingham Broads or UEA and are familiar faces on the dog scene!

We visited one summery afternoon.

The dogs, all of whom had been there since 8.00 in the morning, had just enjoyed a twohour siesta. When we arrived shortly after 2.00, the doors to the paddock had been reopened and most of them were roaming outside. A few had chosen to remain indoors where there are dog play areas, sofas and beds to lounge on (as well as central heating on cold days!), and a specially laid dogfriendly wooden floor which means they won’t skid or slide around.

Most of the dogs were outside. Here, the paddock is bisected, with younger dogs kept one side and larger dogs the other. Since scuffles are extremely rare, made all the rarer by the fact that every adult dog attending the centre needs to be neutered or spayed, dogs were free to move in both spaces.

Just like the inside area, the outside area has plenty of play equipment, with bridges, tyres, tunnels, and ramps to explore. There’s also a large purpose-built wooden chalet – which, again, dogs can roam in and out of, and laze around in.

Attentive staff monitor the dogs, playing with them, laying scent trails and doing agility work with them.

There’s also a contained wooded area in which the dogs can sniff and wander! A 1.8-metre-high fence surrounds all outside areas, so there’s no chance of dogs escaping, or being stolen (dog crime is on the rise). The carer-todog ratio is 1 to 8 – with work experience volunteers from Easton College often making it even higher. All employees receive pet first aid training, and the centre is fully insured, with Taverham Vets close by should the need arise.

Doggy day care is a relatively new phenomenon. It’s a game changer for many who juggle work, the needs of children and the needs of dogs.

See it from a dog’s perspective. What could be better than getting together once a week or so with your friends, running round to your heart’s content all day in a totally safe environment, with caring adults whom you grow to love and wag at, before going home at the end of the day all chilled and happy?

Jessopp Road Scout and Community Hub

It’s a hidden dell in the middle of our neighbourhood and yet how many of us know it exists? Tucked away behind Glebe Road, and accessed from Jessopp Rd, the 33rd Norwich Scouts site is a community gem. An acre of green space, with a beautifully renovated hall that sits sixty, it was gifted to the Scouts in the 1950’s, though used by them from as early as 1918. In the 1990’s the site fell into decline, but over the past five years a campaign, spearheaded by the Scouts, and aided and abetted by members of the community, has restored the hall, a second hut, and its large green field to former glory. Shrubs and trees have been planted: the hut has been lovingly repaired. On June 25th the annual summer fair, with a barbecue, stalls, and a cake stall, tombola etc offers a fine chance to experience this rather magical place for yourselves.

The 33rd Norwich Scouts group is a particularly active Scouts group with a steadily growing membership that reflect national trends.

But although the site is very much the Scouts’ domain, they happily hire it out to other community-based organisations such as Forest School groups, an Art Club, Mother’s Nature Collective, a toddlers’ group, and a women’s fitness group, ensuring that this green oasis can be enjoyed by many. Proceeds from the rentals goes into ongoing maintenance of the site and hall.

Shayne Stork Family Funeral Services

There are funeral directors and there are funeral directors. Being respectful is a given, without which a funeral director would – hopefully – not be in business. But there are other traits, less obvious, that go into making a funeral director extra special. Sensitivity, yes. An ability to quickly read a character (both deceased and living). A deep empathy – so that the mourning families “become my families”. A desire to give 100% to the job in hand, and an aim to move the funeral away from being “occasion” to becoming a memory that’s sad, yes, but also good. That’s not bad.

Beyond duty Shayne Stork has been in the business since he was 16. Four years ago, he set up his own company, Shayne Stork Family Funeral Services, on Sprowston Road, and the business has gone from strength to strength, currently dealing with over 200 funerals a year. It’s not hard to see why this unassuming, modest man is doing so well. He clearly goes way beyond duty. When we met, he had just returned from a funeral where the coffin had arrived via boat. It had been a first, and Shayne mentioned staying up late the night before checking and rechecking details, and getting up early to check yet more details, and worrying lest the boat – on wheels – broke down (an unlikelihood for which Shayne took a second hearse, filled with flowers, as a back-up if required). How he spoke of this funeral showed not only his professionalism, and satisfaction in a job well done, but also his sheer humanity. His duty is to give every grieving family what they want and need. This encompasses the big asks and the small.

Another family, mourning the loss of a beloved eight-year-old daughter, had wanted her coffin to be taken up in a helicopter – something the little girl had longed for but never managed. With the close help of the airport, Shayne organised it.

For a granddaughter who had always driven her grandfather around, the throwaway line “I’d really like to drive the hearse, but I know that’s not possible” was made possible. The granddaughter was allowed to drive the hearse up to the crematorium.

For the family of a teenage boy who’d suddenly died during lockdown, and for whom a dozen mourners didn’t even cover close family members, Shayne organised to hold the funeral in the middle of a football pitch, allowing 60 people to attend out of doors. For many other people, what they want is a quiet, dignified service that goes like clockwork. Job done.

Family business Shayne’s is a genuine family business.

This does not mean a wife doing paperwork during the evenings, and a handful of employees who are not family. Nor does it mean using a friendly undertaker’s name established in the local psyche, but the business being owned and run by a much larger non-independent company, and the name in question being long departed! Shayne’s two sons (Oliver, now aged 17, and Harry, aged 21) work for the firm. So does his wife Emma (part-time). So too will Abbie, his daughter. They’ve all got different qualities, Shayne explains, glowing with pride. And, like their father, they enjoy the hugely varied job. Every funeral is different. Not just in terms of the varying beliefs and cultures of the families involved (Church of England, Catholic, Buddhist, Muslim, humanist, Chinese, Polish etc., etc.) but in the differing personalities of those involved, and the consequent choices made. No day is the same as the one before.

Continuity Unlike many larger companies, Shayne prides himself on being the man who will visit the family at home if the deceased has died at home, the one who will plan the service with them, as well as being the funeral director managing the service on the day.

People are comforted by the continuity, and by the fact that on the actual day of the funeral they won’t be faced with faces they’ve never met.

What’s On

Meet Me In Arcadia: Rut Blees Luxemburg The World We Live In: Art and The Urban Environment at Norwich Castle until September 4th. There’s build-

ing work underway at the Castle, but don’t let it stop you from catching this Arts Council collection touring show, and one that’s super worth catching. Featuring prints, photographs, paintings, and video installations, the expansive exhibition incorporates 35 works spanning the years 1950-2020. Noise, lights, commuting, crowds, migration, architecture are themes covered by artists as diverse as Rachel Whiteread, Michael Andrews, Rut Blees Luxemburg, David Austen and Suzanne Treister. Whilst at the Castle, check out the Henry Moore lithographs of Stonehenge, executed in the early 70’s.

Scottish Women Artists: Transforming Tradition at Sainsbury Centre until July 3.

An exhibition that aims to redress the slant of academic dialogue away from male artists and prove a ‘curatorial corrective’ in favour of talented, often overlooked female artists.

Fabulous intentions and sentiments, as long as the work itself steps right up and occupies the space proudly. Which it does. Featuring work by mid-twentieth century greats, such as Joan Eardley, Margot Sandeman and Wilhelmina Barns-Graham shown alongside contemporary artists Caroline Walker and Sekai Machache, Scottish Women Artists is a show with its heart—and eyes—in the right place.

BUSINESS NEWS— FROM GOLDEN GUIDE ADVERTISER HOME INSTEAD Caring superstar, Amanda Smith from Norwich is celebrating 10 years of supporting the Norwich community with local home care company, Home Instead Norwich.

Amanda joined the home care team in April 2012 as a Care Professional, assisting clients with day-to-day housework, meal preparation, shopping, trips out, companionship and much more.

In 2016, she was promoted to company scheduler.

The officebased role opened doors for Amanda: she later progressed to client experience lead, which means meeting with clients and Chris Carter and Amanda families to ensure the care provided adapts to the client’s changing needs.
