Distribution The Golden Guide is a local independent magazine. We aim to think, buy and live local. It is delivered free to 14,000 homes in South Norwich (The Golden Triangle, Eaton, and City Road areas). Full details of our distribution are on our website. A very Happy Christmas and New Year to you all. As we go to print, we are still in lockdown. Goodness knows what lies ahead but I hope you all manage to have the best Christmas and New Year that you can given the circumstances!

As a difficult year draws to a close, a huge thank you to our printer, deliverers (Forethought Marketing and John Piper), both of whom have gone beyond the call of duty these past 8 months. Also, a big thank you to you, our advertisers, who stuck by us in 2020. Without them, and without you, we wouldn’t have a magazine at all.

For this issue, we really enjoyed visiting Intwood Farm— meeting Camilla and Nigel Darling, being taken round the new butchery and seeing the animals. The farm offers a twice weekly delivery service to Norwich, and is taking Christmas orders now. I also enjoyed zooming with David Fitzgerald who teaches clarinet, sax, flute and piano locally.

Every week of lockdown has meant that EACH has lost £100,000 of revenue from their shops. Read about their ask for increased support for their hospices, including Norfolk’s The Nook, on page 36/37.

David Fitzgerald

If you want to learn the Flute, Saxophone, Clarinet, Piano or even Music Theory, David Fitzgerald is one of the most inspiring music teachers working in Norwich. Under his encouraging tutelage, countless students have gone on to pursue careers in music. Many others have simply had their lives enriched by learning with him. When any teacher uses the word ‘buzz’ about teaching, it’s invariably a very good thing. David uses it.

Alongside teaching (at Norwich School, Norfolk Centre for Young Musicians & Private lessons), David has never stopped playing, recording – and in earlier years – touring. The musicians he has played with and places he has played in, are too numerous to list. In an extremely condensed version: he began his career at the Royal Marines School Of Music in Deal and went on to serve in HMRM Band as principal Flute and Saxophone in the Far East and Pacific. Returning to the UK, he joined the HMRM Plymouth Group Band, playing with artists and composers such as Sir Malcolm Arnold, Lionel Dakers, and regularly taking part in Royal and State occasions such as the Trooping of The Colour and the Royal Tournament. On leaving the Marines, David worked, toured and recorded with a host of artists and Orchestras as diverse as Marc Bolan, Geno Washington and Cliff Richard. He returned to study for three years at Anglia Ruskin, before continuing with a rich recording career, as well as adjudicating at the International Music Eisteddfod in Llangollen.

David has played across the world - at events and diverse as the Coronation Reception for Queen Beatrice of the Netherlands and with Christian artist/composer Adrian Snell at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem. He was a founding member of the musical project IONA, which explored the origins of Christian faith on Lindisfarne and Iona, and recorded two successful albums with IONA and a further four as a solo artist.

All of this is just a small part of David’s achievements, but it contributes to the breadth and depth of what he offers as a teacher. ‘’My purpose is to equip pupils with good practical skills as well as to assist them to discover a deeper understanding and appreciation of music,” he says. He encourages the successive study of ABRSM Grade tuition (Classical & Jazz), but equally encourages pupils to look beyond the grade ladder to the wider landscape of musical exploration.

Intwood Farm

Polled Dorset Sheep On the outskirts of Norwich, just beyond Cringleford, lies Intwood Farm. It is a 450-acre mixed arable and livestock farm, run by the Darling family, who began farming here in 2010. Back then, there was a herd of 30 cows and calves: today, numbers have increased to 300. The farm also keeps a small number of rare-breed pigs, and introduced sheep in 2018. Passionate about its animals, and as a member of the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, Intwood Farm is a calm, immaculately tended farm that puts animal welfare first. In early November, when we visited to collect a box of mixed meat, cattle and new-born calves were out in the fields, grazing on stubble turnips (used as a cover crop after the main crop to maintain soil structure). A line of cattle was munching on parsnips.

Pigs were foraging in woodland, allowed to roam free.

In March 2020, just as Covid was breaking, owner Nigel Darling was working on his ‘retirement project’ – converting a disused dairy for use as a butchery, due to open mid-summer. Pushing the project to completion a few months earlier than intended and recruiting daughter Camilla to work alongside him, Nigel succeeded in opening the stateof-the-art butchery months before schedule, satisfying a local need. The butchery has been a Covid success story: both local and national orders have steadily increased over the past eight months. No surprise here: the meat is quite simply excellent. That it comes from native breed livestock which – in the case of the cattle – are largely grass fed, and are kept until 30 months of age, is part of the reason for its intense, popular flavour. So too is the fact that the abattoir is just a 20-minute drive away. The animals are not troubled by a long journey, which releases stress hormones that affect the taste of the meat after slaughter. Importantly, all meat is hung for a minimum of 21 days (usually 28), and the skills of master butcher Andy Platten contribute to the winning combination.

Nigel chooses his livestock carefully. He has won countless prizes for his cattle, sheep and pigs, some of which are rare breeds, and thus endangered. Cattle are Highland (long hair and big horned), Welsh Blacks, Shetland (with ‘Viking’ horns and smallsized, and rare breed),pigs and traditional Hereford (fairly short, with reddish British Lopanother and saddleback

colouring and white faces, another rare breed).

Sheep are Poll Dorset (a breed known for its lean-tofat ratio), and pigs are Saddleback or British Lop (both Official Rare Breeds).

Each breed is chosen for a variety of reasons: Highland Cattle have, for example, notoriously large hooves, which makes them good on marshy land since they tend not to churn it up too much. Poll Dorset Sheep are the only UK breed happy to lamb all year round, meaning there is a constant supply of ‘spring’ lamb.

So what exactly does Intwood Farm offer the consumer? A quick glance at the website will explain, but you can buy every cut of meat imaginable (lamb, beef, pork) alongside ready-made sausages, beefburgers etc. Most of the meat comes from the farm itself, but some is brought in from other local suppliers (over Christmas, Norfolk Bronze turkeys will come from Great Grove Farm in Attleborough). Alongside meat, there are additional local goodies. Smoked salmon and kippers come from Brancaster Staithe Smokehouse and chutneys from Candis of Reepham. Deliveries can be made to your door (twice a week), or if you fancy a trip out to the farm, you can click and collect. Next-day postal deliveries cover the entire country.

Intwood Farm is a Covid success story. The quality of the meat is quite simply excellent (way above anything you can buy at a supermarket), and you will be buying local from a farm that puts both environmental and animal husbandry uppermost.

EACH calls for renewed support after celebrating their new Norfolk hospice’s one year anniversary.

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) has celebrated their Norfolk hospice’s very first anniversary after it was officially opened by Royal Patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge in November 2019.

After five years of raising £10 million to build the charity’s new purpose-built hospice in Framlingham Earl, The Nook, the charity is calling for renewed support after forecasting a loss of £1.7 million in funding over the next 12 months. Every time they have to close their 43 shops during lockdown they also lose around £100,000 of income each week.

EACH was blown away by the generosity of its Norfolk supporters to help make The Nook a reality and have expressed their gratitude to the public for lending their support to help children and families in and around Norfolk.

Ian Nicolson, EACH Acting Director of Income Generation, said: “We couldn’t be more thankful for people’s generosity in making the vision and the dream of The Nook a reality, but we now urgently need the help of all individuals, groups, community organisations, businesses, trusts, to survive this financial impact and ensure we can be there for families when they need us.”

During the first national lockdown, The Nook and EACH’s other hospices in Milton, just north of Cambridge, and at The Treehouse, in Ipswich, had no choice but to suspend planned face-to-face care and support such as short breaks, wellbeing groups and events, and counselling in order to help families shield at home, taking its service online in most cases. The Nook team in particular were able to continue to respond to urgent requests for care and support.

Since March, staff have had to adapt to new ways of working and they continue to meet the constant ongoing need for complex nursing and end of life care.

Jane Campbell, Service Manager at The Nook, which has won two awards in the last year, said: “Thinking back to our former hospice in Quidenham, while it was a place that those of us who worked there will always remember fondly, it is fortunate we got into The Nook before the pandemic arrived, as the increased space here has meant we could continue to deliver care whilst adhering to government safety guidance.

“The Nook has provided different types of support, including short breaks for many families struggling under lockdown restrictions and it’s not only a testament to the building but also to the team here that those families have felt comfortable enough to reach out for support.

“The continued pressure of the pandemic means our care is more important than ever and we’re now experiencing more requests for support, as families who have been shielding and self-isolating become exhausted from providing care for their children.”

What’s On December 16-24th. Panto In A Pickle, A Right Royal Christmas at Theatre Royal. All credit to the Theatre Royal for managing to pull off a Christmas caper. The hour-long event features regular Panto Dame – and writer - Richard Gauntlett, and comedian Tucker. The show runs for a fortnight, and though not strictly a pantomime will incorporate many panto elements. Tickets available online.

December 3 – March 7 Bill Brandt: Henry Moore at Sainsbury Centre. A major exhibition exploring the intersecting careers of Brandt and Moore. Starting with both artists’ war time shelter images, the exhibition moves on to examine the way both men moved away from the often claustrophobic post war urban settings to focus on landscape - rock formations, geological artefacts and megalithic sites such as Stonehenge etc. On show will be examples of Moore’s well-known sculptural pieces but also lesser known works, using media with which Moore is not widely linked - collage and photography. Conversely, Brandt’s vision of landscape and body as being acutely sculptural will also be examined. In Covid times, it’s obviously necessary to book tickets in advance.

Known to many from his centre stage position at the Natural History Museum, Dippy the diplodocus is actually a plaster cast of a diplodocus found by railroad workers in Wyoming, USA, in 1898, and was given to Edward V11 in 1905. He contains 292 bones, including more than 70 bones in his tail alone.
