Norwich Swift Network Have you seen this bird?

Are you a Golden Guide reader that has swifts nesting in your property?

Maybe you noticed them last summer high above the streets of Norwich, having one of their ‘screaming parties’, the only legal parties in lock down?

If so, Norfolk Swift Network would love to know.

Norwich Swift Network is part of a national network of groups, providing support to these amazing birds.

Why are Swifts amazing?

When a young swift leaves the nest, it is wholly airborne and doesn’t touch down again for three years. At three, and mature enough to find a mate, swifts look for spaces under roof tiles or gaps in bricks in which to build their nests, and breed. Most of their activities (eating, sleeping, preening and mating) take place mid-air, at speeds of around 30 mph. When impressing a mate they can reach speeds of a staggering 70mph, and when turning a corner at speed, they experience G-forces twice that of fighter jets!

Since swifts spend virtually all their lives in the air they clock up the airmiles: it is estimated they fly 200,000km a year! With an average life span of 7 years, that’s the equivalent of many trips to the moon and back.

Why do swifts need our help?

Since the 1990’s swifts have been returning from wintering in Southern Africa in ever declining numbers. Surveys indicate that we have lost almost half of the swifts that come to the UK to breed.

How can we help?

There is one simple thing that we can do to help—put up a nest box!

Finding nest sites is one of the biggest problems that swifts face: putting up nesting boxes, or installing nesting bricks in new developments, is a massive help. Swifts make very little noise when on the nest, and make no mess or damSwift leaving a nest under a tile of a terrace house. age, so they are very easy tenants! Nest boxes are all proven to work and many cities across the UK are encouraging their use.

Swifts are site faithful, returning to their colony street year after years. So next time you are doing roof maintenance please consider if there are swifts locally; could you help them, or if you are lucky enough to have a nest site, can they still access it? Beverley Dickins, Acupuncture The Golden Guide caught up with Acupuncturist Beverley Dickins after her recent return from a year-long Master’s Degree at Durham university.

Why did you return to academic study?

With my background of 42 years’ ongoing training in Traditional Acupuncture and related fields, which inform my practice, a return to academic study allowed time for in-depth academic research on acupuncture, increased understanding and added further power to my treatments.

What were highlights?

There were two main highlights. The first was, seeing how, many countries across the world (such as Vietnam and Cuba), use acupuncture as an equal or highly valued partner alongside Western medical practices. Closer to home, German doctors refer youngsters to KinderAkupunctur (children's acupuncture) as first treatment of choice for a wide range of conditions due to its effectiveness, gentleness, rapidity of action and absence of drug residues.

The second highlight was being reminded of acupuncture’s ability to move and translate from its origins as a complex healthcare-system developed in agrarian China approximately 2000 years ago into contemporary, high-tech Britain! Acupuncture has proved extraordinarily successful in addressing both pre-existing and novel health conditions. Recent research has indicated its effectiveness in speeding recovery and reducing symptoms for Long Covid sufferers. In terms of fertility treatment, research has indicated that acupuncture used alongside IVF can increase the ongoing pregnancy rate by 64%.

Can you tell me more about acupuncture’s topicality?

There is an extensive canon of knowledge in acupuncture that I draw on, which governs the rebuilding and strengthening of immune systems, stamina and strength, and improving lung function that is very applicable today, while relevant historically. Inn current times, we need it more than ever.

This very challenging year has seen clients present with newly-developed conditions, or with pre-existing conditions exacerbated. It is heart-warming to hear the progress back to good health they are reporting with acupuncture.

What other conditions do you treat?

My patients have found acupuncture very helpful with arthritis, IBS, asthma, back pain, stress, insomnia, headaches, women’s health, fertility, COPD, fatigue, long-term illness, low mood, pain and injuries, and much more. Is your practice Covid-Secure?

Absolutely! This is a very Covid-Secure practice, following all government guidelines, and those of the British Acupuncture Council, to ensure patients’ health is fully protected.

I've heard there is a difference between Traditional Acupuncture and that practised by physiotherapists and GPs. What is it?

This refers to a distinction in the UK between traditional, holistic and profoundly therapeutic acupuncture, with a three-year degree-level training with specialism in traditional acupuncture and strong biomedical foundations, with a further portfolio of training often developed, in contrast to acupuncture as practised by physios and GPs. Here, the training is typically shorter, commonly lasting two weekends. Both systems can be useful. Traditional Acupuncture is known for its depth and range of effectiveness, reflected in the length of training.

Punch The Dog

Norwich’s history is often hidden in the most unexpected places. Travel out of town along Dereham Road towards the outer ring road, and opposite the junction with Waterworks Road you will find a peaceful public space, well worth a visit. Woodlands Park comprises half a dozen acres of large trees and open green, wedged between the busy A road and the buildings of Norwich Community Hospital on Bowthorpe Road.

Deep in the heart of Woodlands Park is a reminder of its past. Nestling among the broadleaves and bluebells is a small gravestone. It isn’t too hard to find. The grave belongs to Punch, who, the inscription tells us, died in June 1885 aged 13. But who was Punch? And who buried him here, in this unconsecrated urban copse?

The answer lies across the road. A house was once set back from the north side of Dereham Road.

It was a children’s home in the 1950s. In the 19th century though it was The Woodlands, the home of Robert Fitch, who for 60 years ran a chemist’s shop in Norwich with his brother-in-law: Fitch & Chambers, near the market.

Fitch was born at Ipswich in 1802 and lived in Norwich from 1827. Apart from his work as a chemist, and his role as a magistrate and Sheriff of Norwich, he was also a keen amateur antiquarian and a fellow of the London Geological Society.

He was quite well known locally in his day and even corresponded with Charles Darwin in 1849–51, exchanging news of palaeontological finds and specimens, much to the enormous gratitude of Darwin, who praised ‘Mr Fitch’s fine collection from Norwich’.

So Robert Fitch contributed in some way to the great scientific advances made by one of the 19th century’s pivotal figures.

At this point the wood across the road from Fitch’s house was called Stonehills Plantation. In 1861 two Roman coffins were discovered here buried in a chalk pit. One of the coffins contained the skeleton of a woman, the other was empty. This must have sparked Fitch’s interest as he described the find in the Transactions of the Norfolk and Norwich Archaeological Society (of which he was an honorary secretary). Six years later Fitch purchased the plantation from a Mr Weston, no doubt relishing the opportunity to further excavate the ancient woodland at his leisure.

But it is Fitch’s children who provide a clue to Punch and his gravestone. In 1889, Robert Fitch’s son John (1844–1904) entered some of his dogs into a show held at the Corn Hall, Norwich. He won first and second prizes in the Black Spaniels category with two dogs, Jostle and Jet. But after his marriage in 1871 (the year before Punch was born) John lived elsewhere in Norwich, so it seems unlikely this was John’s dog. Otherwise, why aren’t the champions Jostle and Jet also buried in the same patch of woodland?

Punch’s is a solitary grave. It shows that the Fitches took their dogs seriously though.

Was Punch perhaps a pet dog belonging to John’s sister, Mary (1842–1927), who was living at Woodlands when Punch was a puppy? She later married George Radford Pym and in old age still held affectionate memories of Stonehills, recalling its overhanging fir, pine and beech, the primrose, bluebells and wild hyacinth and ‘trim lawn overlooked by a thatched summerhouse’.

Robert Fitch died in 1895, aged 92, leaving his geological and archaeological collection to the Trustees of the Norfolk and Norwich Museum. An obituary appeared in The Times. Stonehills Plantation was inherited by his son and on John’s death in 1904, ownership passed to Mary. With those happy memories of the wood where the family dogs had played, Mary Pym’s first act was to donate it to the city of Norwich, who renamed it Woodlands Park. It was for a while rather irreverently known as ‘Polly Pym’s Park’.

Fitness Space—the boutique fitness studio in Cringleford Our health and fitness are even more important in these extraordinary times of the Covid pandemic and one gym in particular is working incredibly hard to keep the members safe and healthy.

Fitness Space Norwich, located in Cringleford, has been open for 4 years now but is still as clean and well maintained as it was when they opened their doors. Recently we caught up with Yvonne, who owns and manages the gym, to find out what makes them unique and what lengths they are going to, in order to keep their members as safe as possible.

Yvonne: “Firstly let’s talk about hygiene. On arrival you see the boards reminding you about the protocols for a covid-safe environment. We have hand sanitiser stations at the door and throughout the gym. We provide antibacterial wipes for all of the equipment.

Until social distancing measures are relaxed we are continuing to control the number of people allowed on the gym floor and members book their gym time via our Fitness Space app so there are no queues and we also have the gym professionally cleaned every evening.

What makes us unique? I hope it is the fact that we have built a real fitness community here. The support we have had from our current members through almost a year of lockdowns has been fantastic. Our zoom classes have been really well attended and we have supported our members with 1-1 outdoor training.

On a personal level, I understand how daunting it can be to go to a gym for the first time. Before opening Fitness Space I was a teacher and weighed in at 28 stones. I joined a small gym with some out-dated equipment as I was afraid to go to a gym full of fit people who seemed to know what they were doing. Eventually I got the support of a personal trainer, really got into exercise and lost around 10 stones in weight.

This inspired me to change profession and open my own gym. The difference is that we have state-of-the-art Technogym equipment and a really smart studio for our ever -increasing range of classes.
