verything begins with an idea. Some brilliant and creative minds have the ability to create something from absolutely nothing.

Startups may be small but their crazy, and unique ideas create ripples in the economy that change people’s way of living. Today, startups trigger the growth and development of nations through innovation and creativity. They intensify competition in the market thereby allowing consumers to compare products and services and make rational choices. There are many startups in the market that create completely new products and services, neither basing on duplicated ideas nor presenting any already existing initiatives. They not only create new opportunities but also push the economy to evolve and grow. There is no magic formula to success. Launching a startup and then building it from scratch isn’t easy at all. In this edition, we have featured some of the successful and innovative startups from diverse verticals under “Startup of the year 2021”. Each startup has shared with us its challenging yet inspirational journey. Irrespective of the unfortunate challenges they face, these startups aren’t leaving any stone unturned to climb the ladder of success. May all the startups achieve remarkable growth and scale new heights. We hope that this edition of The Global Hues inspires many young and creative minds to enter the entrepreneurial world.

ave you ever taken another and longer route to reach the main road? Certainly Yes! The stench of rotting and perished wastes and the rats & stray dogs roaming around forces us to divert from the habitual route we take. This is not new. The corners of Indian roads and cities are packed with heaps of garbage and overflowing bins. Currently, as per government estimations, about 65 million tonnes of waste is generated annually in India, and over 62 million tonnes of waste is Municipal Solid Waste which comprises plastic material, wood, organic waste, and recyclable materials like paper. By 2031, MSW is expected to increase to 165 million tonnes and even further up to a shocking 436 million tonnes by 2025. The situation is worsening. India’s population is set to cross the one billion mark. Other disturbing factors like

unplanned development, urbanization are contributing to exacerbating the prevailing condition. Moreover, the kind of garbage and waste being disposed of is also undergoing a noticeable transformation due to the increased use of electronic equipment and gadgets. Waste management is essentially becoming an obligatory duty and the need of the hour but moving towards sustainable waste management requires deep-rooted efforts to bring a change in the society. Chandan Hait, a certified Environment, health, and safety professional was ready to begin his exciting and inspirational journey. His enthusiasm and passion for making Earth a beautiful place again led to the creation of one of the renowned waste management companies, Shuddh Sustainable Solutions in 2015. He believes that waste management is not a technology or a method, it is a “Thought” that has to be embraced. It’s a matter of believing not adopting.

AGNIKUL OF THE YEAR - 2021

BRINGING EARTH-TO-SPACE JOURNEY WITHIN EVERYONE’S REACH

In 5 years, we would be capable of launching one rocket per week. Satya R. Chakravarthy (Co-Founder, Agnikul)

T

he Space Technology industry never fails to amaze the world with its continuous advancements and innovations. In 2016, Agnikul was just an idea on paper and in dreams. To bring transformation in the world of space technology, Agnikul Cosmos was incorporated as a company in Chennai, India in 2017. It is settled into the National Center for Combustion R&D at IIT Madras, Chennai. “The word Agnikul” is derived from a Sanskrit word meaning “Gurukul”, a place where people learn to use fire. Agnikul comprises a group of highly talented, skilled, and experienced rocket scientists, engineers, programmers, lawyers, and many more who are working round the clock to make space accessible to everyone.

(Left to Right) Srinath Ravichandran, Satya R. Chakravarthy and Moin SPM Co-Founders

20 | TheGlobalHues | Vol. 1

| Issue 16 | October 2021

In 2018, the company fired its first set of igniters and single injector elementbased thrusters. In the next year, Agnikul grew its presence in Kerala and became a part of the Kerala Startup mission startup community. It has recently test-fired the world’s first single piece 3D-printed rocket engine Agnilet. The company was Co-Founded by Satya R. Chakravarthy with Srinath Ravichandran and Moin SPM. Satya R. Chakravarthy is a professor of aerospace engineering at IIT Madras and has over 25 years of experience in space technology. Srinath Ravichandran is a Wall Street trader turned Aerospace Engineer with over 10 years of experience in Finance, Engineering, and Project Management. Moin SPM is an Operations Specialist with over 7 years of experience in Engineering Management, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain operations.

WHAT MAKES AGNIKUL UNIQUE?

The USP of Agnikul is to make rockets that can be launched anywhere, and anytime, at affordable prices. It is one of the most customizable, nimble, and frugal launchers in the world with over a wide range of satellite payload sizes.

THE CLIENTELE

Agnikul deals with satellite makers. It ensures that all the rockets are highly customizable to their payload weight, and satellite makers can launch rockets whenever they want without waiting for other customers to ride-share with them.

MISSION AND VISION OF THE COMPANY

The company’s vision is to bring space within everyone’s reach. The mission is to make 3D-printed modular rockets to frugally launch micro-satellites into orbits without any wait time and from anywhere in the world. In the next 5 years, it would be capable of launching one rocket per week and expanding its launch capability to 500 kg class at approximately the same price on a per kg basis of the payload.

TEAM ETHOS

The team of this fast-evolving startup follows a “can do” and “get done” attitude. Agnikul’s team jumps into whatever needs to be done, learns the ropes quickly, and aims to excel in it and become the best-in-class right away.

BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACED BY THE COMPANY

The biggest challenge that Agnikul faced was the absence of laws on private space launches in India in the company’s early years of establishment. The company overcame this problem by placing conviction in the country’s techno-political leadership to enable full private participation in the space sector by ushering in the needed reforms. Fortunately, it was successful in finding the investors to share this conviction as well. With the establishment of IN-SPACe by the government of India, Agnikul has been able to cope well with this challenge.

ADVICE FOR UPCOMING STARTUPS

“Technology is fast growing as an enabler to achieve complex goals and missions, but it is important not to be

blindly carried away by the technological wizardry and focus on the business case of what problem/pain point are we solving for the customer, what is the market of such customers, what their growth potential is, and are the investments being sought in one’s business justifiable by such a market and the potential rate of return. Unless there is a business case, don’t get into tech blindly,” said Satya when asked to share a piece of advice for upcoming startups.

DEFINITION OF SUCCESS

Satya defined the meaning of success and said, “Success has to start from the beginning and it starts with the audaciousness to dream big. Audacity creates a niche that attracts investors. And, then success grows exponentially. According to my past experiences, initially, a startup would grow slowly and then much faster.” He further added and said, “The sheer amount of goodwill that has been generated on what we are attempting to do is an indicator of how successful we have been.”

AWARDS AND MILESTONES

Since its inception, Agnikul has been the recipient of many prestigious awards. Some of the awards it has received are: 

Selected for Airbus BizLabs Accelerator 2018

Economic Times Technology Award 2020

Top Innovator’ in ET Startup Awards - 2020

Recognized as ‘Top 50 Start-Ups in India’ at TiE Silicon Valley at TiECON 2020.

A VINTAGE AFFAIR TO GIVE YOUR HOME A WHIMSICAL MAKEOVER

Retaining the customers and returning customers is what gives us the feeling of being a successful startup. Karan Khanna (Co-Founder & CEO A Vintage Affair)

I

n the summer of 2016, Mr & Mrs. Khanna visited London and Paris on a holiday. From the stunning Eiffel Tower and cute patisseries to the winding cobblestone streets decked with colourful flowers on the pavements, the couple fell in love with the city. One day, while sitting in a cafe they both decided, why not take some part of Paris and London back home? And that is how Karan and Prerna Khanna came up with the idea of a brand that is a tribute to the timeless vintage beauty of these two grand cities. After returning to India, they decided to start a brand that resonates with being classic yet modern, being luxurious yet affordable, being pretty and precious, and being chic and unique. And that is how, in the beginning of 2017, they founded “A Vintage Affair”. It is present in 10 online marketplaces including Amazon, Myntra, and Flipkart, and 25 retail stores across 8 cities in India. Currently, it is supplying products to bookstores, furniture stores, airports, gift shops, and to malls in Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, and other cities. BUSINESS

YES!

YOU CAN PREVENT YOUR BEST EMPLOYEES FROM QUITTING

28 | TheGlobalHues | Vol. 1

| Issue 16 | October 2021

A

ccording to a recent survey, almost 29% of workers agreed to regularly looking and searching for new jobs while being employed. And the 78% agreed to leave their current job if they find better opportunities for themselves.

Losing an employee and that too a good one can cost a company up to three times the person’s annual salary and that’s huge. A company, especially a startup builds strategies to ensure employee retention. A company in that case should sense what’s going on in employees’ minds so that it can look out for possible solutions to encourage employees to stay in the organization. Here are some practices that a company can try:

A Talk can do wonders!

If an employee becomes less productive than usual, shows up late, takes calls outdoors, shows no interest in meetings, sits alone, and leaves work at unexpected hours, then there is a high possibility that he/she is ready to move on. In that case, a heart-to-heart conversation can do wonders. Sit with the employee and try to understand the reason; sometimes all an employee needs is someone to be heard. Just ask if there is any problem you can help with. A conversation can help you find out more. Maybe they don’t really want to quit and it’s just an issue that can easily be addressed.

Appreciation is important

Dau Voire once said, “Always show appreciation. What’s taken for granted will eventually be taken away. Then you end up missing most what you least appreciated.” Sometimes, an employee’s workload can be more than he/she can handle which leaves him/her at a high risk of burnout. In that case, you need to offer additional support like strategies to prioritize, a break from work, and sometimes a genuine appreciation. Taking out time and providing your employees with a chance to recognize and appreciate each other’s work can nurture teamwork.

Discuss Career Paths

“A mind troubled by doubt cannot focus on the course to victory,” said Arthur Golden. It is clear that if employees get doubtful about their career growth in the company they are working for, they may leave the organization soon. The studies also suggest that employees may leave their present companies if they find a position offering them better career advancement and opportunities. Many talented employees, look forward to advancing their career and level of expertise. Advocating employees’ career growth and giving frequent feedback can prevent them from leaving the company.

Offer flexibility

Sometimes employees leave the company because of a long commute. The longer the commute, the higher are the chances of burnout. Although that is a personal challenge that an employee faces but offering flexible hours and remote working options may prove beneficial. Providing flexibility to employees can lead to some additional benefits such as higher productivity, fewer sick hours, greater employee happiness and satisfaction, and less stress and anxiety for work. Don’t forget that offering care and support is all an employee asks for sometimes.

Provide training opportunities

Providing education and training to the employees can help them feel they are making progress. An American engineer Gregory Balestrero once said “Employees cannot become more productive in every sense of the world unless they are provided with continuous on-the-job training.” Training will bring in more opportunities for employees to not only perform better but also to move up to higher positions.

Discuss promotion plans

One of the prominent reasons behind employees leaving the company can be their dissatisfaction with the uncompetitive pay. Start paying employees according to their worth. Discuss a development and promotion plan and try to give monthly bonuses so that each and every employee is paid according to the work they do. Even a small amount can work and prevent dissatisfaction and restlessness. It may also give motivation to employees to put in extra efforts thereby leading to the growth of the company.

Switch employees roles

This is a smart way to try. All you need to do is schedule leaders to switch roles with each type of employee so that each one can get a fair idea about other’s job. By doing this, you will help employees experience how challenging it is to lead people. Meanwhile, leaders will also gain a perspective working with challenges employees face on a regular basis. This activity will create respect and understanding between employees and their managers. At the end of the day, some employees will leave. All you have to do is try your best to show them their career path. Getting your skilled and talented employees to stay can be as easy as having a conversation. However, sometimes all your efforts can go in vain as well.

Furniture and Design

P2S INTERNATIONAL USED DRUMS AND TYRES TURNED INTO A ONE CRORE BUSINESS

After realizing there could be a potential market for upcycling products in India, I left my job and started converting used tyres and drums into attractive furniture.

Pramod Susare (Founder, P2s International)

A

27-year old mechanical engineer, Pramod Susare used to work in a multinational company in Pune but his life took a major turn when he went on a business trip to China in 2017. In China, he saw a few businesses recycling used materials, like drums and tyres, into attractive and useful furniture. He got fascinated by this idea. “That very moment I thought that this idea can be replicated in my home country India as well. After exploring the market deeply, I realized that there is hardly any competition in this sector. I rented a shop on 18th October 2018 and started working on my venture but also continued my job to meet daily expenses.”, said Pramod.

PRODUCTS AND SERVICES PROVIDED

P2s International is one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of: 

Drum and Tyre furniture,

Automotive Furniture

Eco-friendly garden designing solutions,

Interior design solutions,

Outdoor design solutions,

Vintage products, and

Other customized products.

THE FOUNDATION OF THE STARTUP

Destiny has a way of finding you. A small event changed Pramod’s life forever. One day, Pramod’s two-wheeler got punctured, “I went to a repair shop where I saw a heap of tyres. When I inquired about the cost of those tyres, I got to know that they are sold at just

| Issue 16 | October 2021

Rs. 7-8 per kg. One tyre costs around Rs. 30-40. I immediately started calculating labor costs, repair and recycling cost, and profit margins”, recalled Pramod. This entire event gave him enough confidence and motivation to start looking at YouTube and other search engines to research and add knowledge to his lucrative business idea. This eventually led to the foundation of an upcycled furniture and design startup, P2s International in 2018. When he started his venture, he used to do everything on his own from manufacturing and designing to painting and carpenting. The company had no employees for one year because of the lack of funds.

TURNING POINT IN THE CAREER

Pramod’s received his first order from a restaurant called Cafe Pune Studio, Pune which gave him the motivation to invest more time into his business. He received his next big order from Velvet Garden Restaurant, Thane which became a turning point in his career. “The amount I was proposed from that one single project was 5.5 lakhs. My annual salary was half of this amount (Rs. 2.5 lakhs),” he said. He made up his mind to focus entirely on his business. Therefore, he left his job after completing the project. After the successful completion of his first order, he started receiving many big projects from renowned companies. As a proper setup and skilled workforce became the need of the hour, he employed 8 people including a highly talented painter, carpenter, and a designer. Currently, the company has 15 employees including skilled and experienced engineers and production heads.

CHALLENGES FACED

About facing big challenges, Pramod said, “When I started my business, there was no public awareness of upcycling. So, it was very difficult to sell products.” To overcome this challenge, he came up with an innovative plan. He approached a nearby sugarcane juice center and asked them to use the company’s upcycled furniture in the shop for free. This idea proved beneficial for Pramod. “In January 2019, I received my first order from a music cafe in Pune which earned me Rs. 50,000.”, recalled Pramod. As the cafe was inaugurated by big

entrepreneurs and celebrities, Pramod’s products received appreciation and popularity. Moreover, the Covid-19 pandemic hit the hotel and hospitality industry very hard. This impacted the entire business model of P2s International but Pramod didn’t want to sit back and give up. He started manufacturing sanitizer dispensers on a very large scale for approximately 3 months which yielded a profit of around 15 lakhs. When the world was again hit by the second wave of the pandemic, he manufactured around 300-400 hospital beds to small clinics, covid centers, and different hospitals.

Ahmednagar, Hyderabad, Gujarat, and Bangalore due to different marketing strategies. The company has recently delivered its products to a reputed company of South Africa as well. The entrepreneur plans to open outlets in Delhi, Mumbai, and Rajasthan by 2022 to expand his business and overcome the challenge of bearing huge transportation costs. The annual turnover of P2s International is between Rs. 90 lakhs to 1 crore. It gets around 10 to 15 orders from big hotels and cafes per month. A single order ranges from Rs 50,000 to 1 lakh.

FUTURE PLANS AND VISION OF THE COMPANY

P2s International started with delivering products to only local cities to avoid higher transportation costs. The business is now expanding into new big cities like Rajasthan, Orissa, Haryana, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Chennai, Mumbai, TheGlobalHues | Vol. 1 | Issue 16 | October 2021

Financial Literacy

READON OF THE YEAR - 2021

ON A MISSION TO MAKE INDIA FINANCIALLY LITERATE

The change in perception, from money being something that overwhelms us to talking about it, and being more aware, is what we aim to drive.

Shantanu Jain (Co-Founder, ReadOn)

C

oming from a typical middle-class Marwari family, Shantanu grew up watching more of CNBC than Cartoon Network. He was always ultra-curious to know how much money the Kirana Store owner or the tuition teacher in his locality made. This passion to understand businesses and stock markets deeply led him to pursue Chartered Accountancy as a profession. After completing his articleship, he joined Swiggy as a Finance Management Trainee. In his two years with the fast-growing startup, he learned how to scale up a business. He finally took the plunge in January 2021 and started building ReadOn. ReadOn is an online media brand that makes business news fun and interesting. The aim is to make the average Gen Z financially literate. One of the core values of ReadOn is urgency in efforts and patience in results. From being obsessed with targets to just enjoying the process and patiently waiting for results has kept the startup true to its core. It saves the company from using hacky and click-bait ways to increase the audience, and helps it deliver high-quality content. What also helps is the fact that their readers can talk back via ReadOn’s WhatsApp channel. Shantanu personally handles all incoming queries and solves them at the earliest possible.

WHAT MAKES READON UNIQUE IN THE MARKET?

One of the unique aspects of ReadOn is that it has been able to gain traction and be consistent since its inception without spending a penny on marketing or customer acquisition. Other than this, it has a unique way

42 | TheGlobalHues | Vol. 1

| Issue 16 | October 2021

of curating the top updates in a day, where ReadOn doesn’t just summarise the news but explains what’s the context, why something is happening, and what will be its implications (context + insight). And all of this in less than 100 words.

SERVICES PROVIDED

ReadOn helps college students and young professionals save time and effort in scavenging through the internet to find good reads around business and finance. It handpicks the most relevant content, takes a deep dive to ensure all facts are in line (with the kind of fake news that floats around), and presents it in a fun and eye-pleasing format. It ensures that the write-ups are free of jargon and in plain English so that people from a non-core finance or business background can also understand the concepts easily. The company also offers cohort-based learning communities to help young professionals engage and network with their peers around specific interest areas (like Foodtech, Blockchain, etc). They clock around 1.5mn impressions per month across social media channels.

OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD

The biggest opportunity for ReadOn is to be able to leverage tech in making Indians financially literate at scale. With fintech companies commoditizing financial products, the space is getting cluttered and more complex for a layperson to navigate. What’s missing is: 

An easy-to-understand resource bank to explain the modern way to approach personal finance and A regular, reliable source as a go-to for any finance-related query.

This is where the role of ReadOn comes in. It offers a refreshing way to stay in touch with business and finance updates.

MISSION AND VISION OF THE COMPANY

Shantanu, while mentioning the mission and vision of ReadOn says, “Our vision is to bring business and finance conversations to chai-addas and dinner tables. It’s just sad that we still shy away from talking about money with our parents, siblings, or kids. Every human needs to have a good relationship

with their health and money to have an overall good quality of life. While we are super-quick to act and take corrective action when it comes to our health, money talks take a backseat. This change in perception, from money being something that overwhelms us to talking about it, being more aware, is what we aim to drive. And over the next 5 years, we aim to create an impact in the lives of at least 10 million Indians.”

TEAM ETHOS

ReadOn is obsessed with two core values:  Urgency in efforts, patience in results: There are no slackers, and everybody is laser-focused on getting the process right. Results are just that: a result of our hard work on the process.  Be passionately curious, always ask why: ReadOn believes in what Fredrich Nietzsche has said, “If you know the ‘why’, you can bear any ‘how’.” The company believes that when the team leads with curiosity, the quality of output increases drastically. It has received appreciation from its readers when someone on the team went absolutely berserk, and dove deep into something weird just to satiate their curiosity. ReadOn tries and helps to keep that passion alive via regular and free-flowing brainstorming sessions.

employees. Yavantika, the Co-Founder of the company, deserves all the credit for making it as smooth as it is today. Shantanu proudly says, “We have one of the fastest turn-around times for any high-quality media operations in India.”

ADVICE FOR UPCOMING STARTUPS

When asked what advice he would like to give to upcoming startups, he said, “Build a culture doc from Day 0. Know what kind of person you are, what values you would want to amplify in your organization, and spend time on communicating it, and adhering to it. You can fix a bad product, but not a bad culture.”

DEFINITION OF SUCCESS

Shantanu quotes the last 4 lines of Robert Frost’s poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening to define the meaning of success: “The woods are lovely, dark and deep, But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.” He says “I don’t know what “there” is yet, is it us impacting the lives of 10 million? 20 million? A 100 million? I don’t have a destination. I just know the path and direction and we will keep walking down that road, as long as we can.”

BIGGEST CHALLENGE FACED BY THE COMPANY For ReadOn, the biggest challenge was to get consistency going while maintaining the quality of content without increasing fixed costs. It took the startup around 2-3 months to figure out the best process that was beneficial for both readers as well as

Clean Energy

TADPOLE PROJECTS PROVIDING AFFORDABLE, EFFICIENT, AND SUSTAINABLE EV RETROFITTING SOLUTIONS

Our goal is to help all the sections of the society, including a layman and an illiterate person, understand the value of electric vehicles.

Jawaad Khan (Founder, Tadpole Projects)

T

he electric vehicles industry is gaining worldwide acceptance today. To switch towards clean energy and green power, people are moving towards the adoption of electric vehicles. Mohammad Jawaad Khan, a 23-year-old young entrepreneur and an electric engineer founded Tadpole Projects, a clean energy startup to take the mobility sector ahead by adding electric vehicles without adding new vehicles on road. He started Tadpole Projects in September 2020 in association with the Centre of Excellence for Research on Clean Air (CERCA) at IIT Delhi. “After completing my graduation, I came to Delhi and started working on car modifications. I also went to Singapore for the International Startup Enrichment Tour (ISET). I was once invited to an event at IIT Delhi. There, Arun Duggal, an IIT Delhi alumnus asked me whether I could convert a classic 1948 Volkswagen Bettle into an electric car,” told Jawaad Khan. After a fruitful conversation, Jawaad agreed and started working on the project. By February 2020, the 1948 Beetle was turned into an electric car owned by Major (Retd) Manjit Singh of the Tenon Group of companies. Tadpole Projects aims at enhancing the EV ecosystem in the country without adding any new cars on the road. It retains the driving feel of the vehicles keeping the transmission intact.

WHAT MAKES TADPOLE PROJECTS UNIQUE IN THE MARKET?

Tadpole Projects is unique in the market as it: 

44 | TheGlobalHues | Vol. 1

| Issue 16 | October 2021

Tries to maintain the same driving feel of any former IC-engine car.

Provides customized kits and batteries for a wide range of vehicles.

Offers battery swapping and fast charging services for commercial fleet operators.

Provides standard international chargers, vehicle diagnostics, and tracking on mobile devices.

Tests every product to ensure high safety and security.

UPCOMING PROJECTS

Tadpole Projects is currently working on a Mercedes car which would be the first Indian premium car to be converted into an electric car. It is also making an autonomous driverless car for the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). “There is a client in Andhra Pradesh who wants us to retrofit trucks. If we crack the deal, this would be our one of the biggest achievements,” told the entrepreneur. The whole team of Tadpole Projects is working on the same. “We are making Make in India superbikes. These superbikes come with a lot of unique features and the cost is economic. Besides this, we are also working on Tadpole Education. It is an education course which is being given to Singapore for the International Startup Enrichment Tour.” explained Jawaad. Tadpole Education would be a course wherein there would be electric vehicles industry leaders. Practical workshops would be conducted for spreading awareness about retrofitting.

GREEN INITIATIVES AND IDEAS

As EV retrofitters, Tadpole Projects provides a solution that is sustainable and eco-friendly. The company follows a unique way of giving back to nature. “Whenever we remove an engine from a car, we plant a tree,” informed Jawaad. Whenever a bike is sold and runs more than 3000 kilometers, Tadpole Projects plants a tree on owner’s name and takes care of it. “If Tadpole’s initiatives bring even 1 percent of change in the environment, that would be an achievement for us,” stated Jawaad while emphasizing the need for green initiatives in the country.

MISSION & VISION OF THE COMPANY

In 2022-23, Tadpole Projects seeks approval of kit by ICAI, ARAI for use in commercial cabs and delivery vehicles. It also wants to execute a franchise model

pan India. Tadpole aims to become a leader in retrofitting across all fourwheel segments. The current goal of the company is to spread awareness and help people understand the importance to switch to electric vehicles.

The current valuation of the company stands at Rs. 10 crores. It has collected around Rs. 1 crore funds and has earned revenue of around 50 to 60 lakhs in the last 6 months.

AWARDS AND MILESTONES

Jawaad Khan has recently been awarded India’s achievers’ award in 2020 for outstanding professional achievement and contribution to nation-building. TheGlobalHues | Vol. 1 | Issue 16 | October 2021

BUSINESS

THE BUY NOW, PAY LATER REVOLUTION

Why is BNPL becoming India’s fast-growing credit option? Goldman Sachs says, the Indian e-commerce industry is poised to become a $99 billion market by 2024. At the same time, according to different industry experts, Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) will become the fastest growing online payment method, from a 3 percent share in 2020 to 9 percent in 2024.

B

uy Now Pay Later, as the term suggests, is a scheme that allows shoppers to buy a product and make payments later at the end of a stipulated time period. Millions of people now use the BNPL services to finance their big purchases. Although, BNPL is having a moment but critics are worried about how many people are spending more than they can afford

46 | TheGlobalHues | Vol. 1

and some are unknowingly getting into debt. Let’s understand what is this scheme all about and why is it suddenly booming?

WHAT IS BNPL & HOW DOES IT WORK?

BNPL simply means that you get to make a purchase right away but are allowed to pay the amount later without using any credit card. Consumers get the product up front but pay for it in incremental amounts. The concept is on

| Issue 16 | October 2021

a boom right now due to coronavirus but isn’t new. Some of the big fintech companies that offer BNPL services are Amazon Pay, Simpl, Slice, LazyPay,and ZestMoney. Some recent developments have been done by BNPL providers firms which are: The partnership between Amazon & Affirm Amazon buyers will be able to split purchases of $50 or more into smaller and monthly installments. some loans will come with 0% Annual Percentage Rate (APR) while others will bear the interest. Apple Pay enters into BNPL Space Apple Pay ties up with investment bank Goldman Sachs to venture into the BNPL segment. Users can use the Apple Pay Later feature to make Apple Pay purchases. Under the scheme, Goldman Sachs will be responsible for covering and handling the installments for the new proposition. PayPal ends late fee for BNPL customers More than 7 million customers have used the BNPL service of PayPal, leading to a purchase of more than $3.5 billion of products. Customers will no longer have to pay additional charges if they miss a PayPal installment for a previous purchase.

THE FUTURE OF THE BNPL SCHEME

The gross merchandise value of BNPL in India will reach $52,827.2 million by 2028, from $6,990.5 million in 2020. In the future, BNPL providers will: Help merchants increase sales Merchants who use BNPL providers have reported sales growth. Sometimes, customers prefer not to buy products to avoid the money loss and the negative emotions associated with it but BNPL partly comes to the rescue and solves this problem. Customers can buy the product at the moment and feel the positive emotions after acquiring the product. Emerge as shopping destinations Pay later service company Afterpay announced the launch of Afterpay Ads that will enable its merchant partners to

advertise on BNPL firm’s application to boost their products, promotions, and offers. “Afterpay Ads unleash the power of our ecosystem by giving brands a new way to promote products, collections, and offers to Afterpay’s highly engaged young audience of shoppers,” said Mark Teperson, Afterpay’s Chief Strategy Officer.

THE RISKS INVOLVED

But there’s also a downside of BNPL too. Many critics claim that the scheme encourages buyers to spend more than they can afford. Reports suggest that over the past two years, 43 percent of BNPL users were late in doing payments. Two-thirds of them said that they lost track of the bill due date while one-third blamed it on not having the money. Most BNPL providers do not charge interest if consumers pay on time but if the payment is missed due to any reason, the consumer goes into a big trouble. A failure to repay the amount may spoil the credit score and further make it difficult to apply for any big loan in the future. Moreover, BNPL schemes

also do not offer the same consumer protections as credit cards, including chargeback rights.

FINAL WORDS

There are still certain important things that borrowers and lenders should keep in mind. Borrowers should be aware that BNPL is still a loan and they need to repay it on time. On the other hand, lenders should educate the borrowers properly about BNPL schemes so that borrowers can make informed decisions. Many small and medium enterprises are adopting the BNPL scheme to maximize their tax deductions and manage their expenses with flexible repayment options and transparent fees. For the last 2-3 years, BNPL has been trying to establish itself as the alternative credit option in India. The growth of the e-commerce industry and the popularity of BNPL platforms during the pandemic will lead to the creation of growth opportunities for the Indian market.

WONDRx OF THE YEAR - 2021

CREATING A WORLD OF CONNECTED HEALTHCARE

Patients and Healthcare providers are at the center of whatever we do!

Pankaj Sindhu and Pankaj Agrawal (Co-Founders, WONDRx)

T

he non- digitization of medical records is bringing a lot of challenges and tremendous opportunity loss on data insights led research, non-aggregation of demand and supply monitoring, and siloed healthcare events. There is no end-to-end visibility of a patient’s journey right from pre-clinic to post-clinic visit monitoring. This essentially happens because a large part of medical records is still handwritten irrespective of urban or rural landscapes. WONDRx has built a product that solves the problem versus many healthcare start-ups who focus on creating the product and then fitting the product to the problem. WONDRx product is a beautifully simplified innovation that digitizes the handwritten medical records instantaneously as they are being written by the Doctor on the Prescription (Rx) paper, which in turn is available as a digital Rx copy to the Patients and also to the healthcare providers post Patient’s consent in order to serve the Patients. WONDRx is an innovationbased Health-Tech Startup that is conceptualized and executed with an aim to integrate Healthcare ecosystems in India and other similar developing countries. It is a futuristic and smart solution company that attempts to digitize the services of many healthcare partners thereby successfully creating a world of connected healthcare. In essence, WONDRx is democratizing healthcare by improving accessibility and convenience for all in their respective healthcare endeavours.

ABOUT THE FOUNDERS

Pankaj Sindhu, the founder of WONDRx is driving the vision and product

50 | TheGlobalHues | Vol. 1

roadmap of the organization. A serial entrepreneur with two prior successful exits is applying his 20+ years of experience in building this meaningful start-up. Pankaj Agrawal, the Co-Founder of the company is a Bachelor of Pharmacy with an Executive Management Program from the International School of Business & Media. He has over 2 decades of experience in the Healthcare Industry in some of the big companies across different workstreams like Sales & Marketing, Training & Development, Commercial Excellence, Market Access, Product Pricing Strategy, etc.

WHAT MAKES WONDRx UNIQUE IN THE MARKET?

There are enough and more solutions available locally, regionally, nationally, and globally to digitize the medical records within the Doctor’s clinic and they are labelled differently as Clinic automation, Rx-Digitization, HIS, EMR, and Telemedicine. Most of them have one end goal to convert the healthcare records into digital records by way of typing the prescription; however, the technology adoption is the biggest challenge and secondly, they miss on adequately connecting all siloed healthcare interactions like Doctor consultation, Radiological examinations, medicine supplies, AI-enabled data analytics for future research, or driving economic efficiencies across the healthcare ecosystem. WONDRx fills this gap, it focuses on medical record digitization and integrating the entire healthcare eco-system onto its single platform to derive efficiencies from data analytics and integration. There is a unique value proposition for patients and every healthcare provider on WONDRx. As the majority of the existing solutions force the Doctors to type his/her medical records (Rx) into their respective systems, some of the pragmatic issues like increased screen time for doctors, loss of patient eye contact, excessive fatigue from data entry, mammoth patient loads at the clinics/hospitals, etc. result in lesser adoption to such typing-based systems. Typing-based systems force the Doctor to change his/ her behavior from writing to typing – change in behavior is the first failure for any digital application. Therefore, even if the EMRs are deployed in private or public healthcare institutions, their

usages are dismal and hence it is not serving the intended goal of digitization. Handwriting a medical prescription has been one of the most natural behaviors of doctors for decades. And this is where WONDRx becomes a natural ally to all medical practitioners – its SMART Rx solution allows the Doctor to continue handwriting the Rx while it gets digitized instantly.

SERVICES PROVIDED

With a complete focus on enabling healthcare access to every corner of India digitally, WONDRx provides many top-notch services: WONDRx Smart Kit for Doctors which consists of a smart pen plus smart paper allows instantaneous digitization of handwritten medical records. This allows small individual clinics as well as large-sized corporate hospitals to keep a digital copy of their OPD medical records. It further enhances patient engagements and helps build patient loyalty towards clinicians or hospitals by providing an end-to-end healthcare experience. Through its WONDRx Consumer & Provider applications, patients and providers experience the power of getting digitally connected for transacting various healthcare services, purchases, and also for medical record keeping.

CLIENTELE OF THE COMPANY

The clientele of the company includes doctors, hospitals, healthcare providers (Pharmacies, Diagnostic Centers, Pathology, etc), consumers, Pharma Industries, State Govt, Central Government, healthcare start-ups, or any other institutions who are either responsible to provide or support the healthcare nationally and internationally. The true delight for any client is post-sales service, and constant value enhancements and that is what WONDRx firmly believes in and that is the key driver of building unbreakable faith with all the clients.

MISSION AND VISION OF THE COMPANY

“We would like WONDRx Smart Kit to reach to every Registered Medical Practitioners in this country right from the most urban market to the most rural market. By digitization of handwritten medical records, we would like to extend the power of digital healthcare

to every small and big healthcare provider right from the local pharmacy to the biggest e-pharmacy and all other service providers where they receive the demand from patients directly through the WONDRx application.”, said Pankaj Agrawal, while mentioning the mission and vision of the company.

TEAM ETHOS

Shared values are essential to shaping the culture and enjoyable work environment, and it is true for most organizations including WONDRx. Passion, Integrity, Attitude, Commitment, Perseverance, and Teamwork are some of the core values of WONDRx.

ADVICE FOR UPCOMING STARTUPS

Pankaj Sindhu advised upcoming start-ups and said, “Ensuring highway with adequate funding for scaling up, building committed teams, commercializing the product with the right product mix and optimum pricing and enhancing product roadmap regularly are the simple attributes for the growth of any start-up.”

AWARDS AND MILESTONES

WONDRx has been the talk of the town ever since it was conceptualized for its simplicity of innovative solutions. It has received dozens of awards and has been featured in the “Top Health Tech Start-ups to watch for” almost every year over the last 3 years. WONDRx has received extensive attention in media, investor circles, and Medical Fraternity, and consumers at large. It has bagged many awards for its outstanding work. Some of their mentions are CIO Insider, CEO Insights, Innovative Magazine, Skotch Award, NAT Health, and many others to list a few. WONDRx has recently received a letter of appreciation from the CM of Rajasthan for providing a unique solution during COVID times which helps patients to e-consult with international Doctors. WONDRx has created an application that will impact every individual in this country and is the first step towards Digital Health Access. The company is determined to bring Digital health access to every nook & corner of India.

Reading, therefore can play a major role. Here is the list of 5 must-read captivating and informative books.
