About This Book
Welcome to The Woven Adventures of 31 Young Engineers, a special book celebrating the remarkable journey of our second-grade students at Lower Lab. This year, in partnership with The Center for Architecture, ourbuddingengineersexploredthefascinatingworldof bridges. Through immersive experiences across New York City's five boroughs, students engaged in hands-on activities, gaining a profound understanding of engineering and architectural principles essentialfordesigningandconstructingthesemarvels.
Over the course of their exploration, our students embodied core values such as curiosity, teamwork, problem-solving, independence, and mutual respect. They seamlessly blended mathematics, science, creativity, and compromise into their endeavors. Above all, they learned the invaluable lesson of the power of listening—to each other, to their inner voices, and to the wisdom gleaned from their experiences.
Using the mentor text "You Wouldn't Want to Work on The Brooklyn Bridge" by Tom Ratliff as a guide, students explored the occupational hazards inherent in constructing monumental bridges in the 19th century. This immersive experience enriched their understanding, providing context and insights into the challenges faced by workers during pivotal historical periods. Additionally, students honed their nonfiction skills through collaborative research on two distinct animal species. This dynamic activity sparked creativity and refined research and teamwork abilities as they delved into captivating intricacies of diverse animal behaviors and traits. Inspired by the Pokémon Card Craze, each student crafted vibrant hybrid trading cards, intricately capturingtheessenceoftheirchosenanimals.
Throughout this journey, our sensational second graders have acquiredinvaluableskillsasengineers, architects, researchers, writers, andfutureproblemsolvers.Theyembracedcriticalthinking, precision, innovation, creativity, spatial awareness, and analytical thinking. This book signifies not an end, but the commencement of a joyous journey inalifetimeoflearning.
We are so proud of our engineers' hard work, tenacity, and perseverance.

How This Book Is Made

materials such as cardboard, paper, craft sticks, glue, yarn, paper, and more. Designers from The GIANT Room team have taken photos of theseprojectsandeditedthephotosusingavarietyofAIandgraphic tools to bring their bridges to life. Some of these AI tools included a backgroundremover, abackgroundextender, adetaileraser, andeven a detail adder. Can you spot the bridge projects that have an AIgeneratedskyaddedtothebackground?
Students engineered the avatars you see throughout the book by completing a GIANT mission sheet that asked them to (1) choose an animal that they may find in NYC, (2) decide what their animal is wearing, and (3) give their animal a prop to hold or interact with. Designers from The GIANT Room then used students’ drawings and writtensubmissionstogeneratetheiravatarswithgenerativeAItools. You’ll find the exact AI prompts we used in the section “Meet the Engineers.”
Here we have presented their design journey in a comic-book style usingquotes, writtenbystudentsreflectingontheirlearningjourney, andbyGIANTwritersandeducatorstohighlightinterestingfactsand engagingstoriesaboutthebridgestheyhavebuilt.
Why AI? The GIANT Room’s mission is to elevate kids’ voices and providethemwithopportunitiestopublishandsharewithfriendsand family. AI is a powerful tool they can use in their creative journey, and along the way they can gain AI and media literacy skills that are incredibly valuable for their future. The GIANT Room introduces students to these tools in a responsible way, and always human in the loop.

Striking Gold in California
Hello! My bridge project is about the Golden Gate Bridge. I chose the Golden Gate Bridge because I was born in California and a lot of my family lives there. I go there from time to time too. The Golden Gate Bridge is located in the San Francisco Bay, The opening day was May 27th, 1937. When it opened it was the longest suspension bridge in the world. It was painted international orange so ships and planes could see it from far away and in the fog. The Golden Gate bridge was built to bounce in the winds of California and during earthquakes. The suspension of the bridge is made of cables that are made of 61 bundles, and each bundle is made of 452 wires. Even though it was already well supported after a far away earthquake, they added more bracing. The bridge is still being constantly checked on even today. With all of those safety precautions, you would think the bridge was totally safe, but actually, no! First, workers got lead poisoning from the primer paint that the international orange would soon be painted over. Then, 10 men died when their scaffold collapsed. At least the company installed a net that saved 19 men when they fell.
