For four weeks, The GIANT Room joined students and teachers to learn about AI literacy, storytelling, and science. As part of the school’s Plant and Animal Relationships unit, we investigated a real-world mystery: why did no new chalta trees grow in the Bengal Tiger Reserve from 1995 to 2015? What do chalta trees need to grow? And what is the connection between chalta fruit, elephants, and poop?
During the unit, students dove deep into how plants depend on animals in their habitats, assuming the role of plant scientists reporting to the lead scientist at the Bengal Tiger Reserve. Motivated to figure out the cause of this real-world mystery, students investigated the problem, and then pursued a chain of reasoning that took them from considering how plants get what they need to grow to understanding how seeds depend on animals for dispersal. Students use their newfound understanding to try to get to the bottom of the mystery!
While working to solve it with The GIANT Room team, students created their own collectible animal trading cards using generative AI, brainstormed with text-based AI to come up with theories on how their animal was involved in the mystery, drew comics of these theories, and even worked together to come up with what their area of the forest looked like using block-based prompt engineering.
We want to thank the school and the Joan Ganz Cooney Center for their partnership, and to the Robin Hood Foundation for funding the program and making this publication possible.
Your creative collaborators, The GIANT Room
Co-designed and co-written by 27 students, AI, and a multidisciplinary team of artists, educators, and writers at The GIANT Room, The Adventures of 27 Science Detectives and PromptEngineers showcases students’ science, storytelling, and AI literacy achievements and invites their friends and family to celebrate, reflect, and learn about their creations!
Students engineered the animal avatars you see throughout the book by building a 3D animal model and completing a GIANT Mission Sheet that asked them to choose an animal that lives in the Bengal Tiger Reserve, give it a name, and share traits about it. Designers from The GIANT Room then used photos of students’ 3D animal models and written descriptions to generate their avatars with AI tools. You’ll find the exact AI prompts we used in the section, “Meet the Animals.”
Teachers also joined in and created their own AI avatars. These avatars act as the curious leaders of the science detectives and guide us closer and closer to solving the mystery!
In our last workshop together, students used block-based prompt engineering to generate what they envisioned their forest to look like. In groups, they added nouns, adjectives, qualifiers, quantifiers, connectors and more to build a text prompt, telling AI exactly what they wanted it to generate. These images were used as the background settings for students’ comics, where students wrote key mystery facts said by their animal avatars.
Why AI? The GIANT Room’s mission is to elevate kids’ voices and provide them with opportunities to publish and share with friends and family. AI is a powerful tool they can use in their creative journey, and along the way they can gain AI and media literacy skills that are incredibly valuable for their future. The GIANT Room introduces students to these tools in a responsible way, always with a human in the loop.

Here’s my theory on what is going on with these chalta trees!
By Jesslyn
That’s an interesting theory. Seeds do need water, sunlight, air, and soil to grow. BUT --
-- I asked the scientists at the reserve, and they said all the plants DO have enough water, sunlight, air, and soil to grow.
So that can’t be it...
Iloveeating elephant apples!
Hello!Iaman alligator.I’m notbehind themystery.
Wow, this mystery is tougher than I thought! Well, let’s keep looking for more clues. What about that section of the forest over there?

I’d TOTALLY go for that snack break... Also, what do you think about this theory?
By Emily
A snack break?! DUDE, we are trying to solve a SERIOUS mystery!! Don’t let the animals distract you with their talk of food!
Wait... do I smell gaur?
You’re right. I’m sorry I’m getting distracted.
But I can just imagine reaching high up in the chalta tree to get a big chalta fruit and then crunching on its hard shell --
Hey!!! Where are you running off to?! NO! Don’t eat Fluff the Gaur! He’s our friend!!

I’dfeelthe same!Iwouldn’t wanttoeatfruit offtheground.
But I know LOTS of animals that don’t mind! In fact, some animals need the fruit to fall to the ground, because they can’t reach it high up in the tree. So this can’t be the reason...

Ooooh, could this sneaky red panda be the culprit???
Some animals bury the seeds in the ground to hide them for later! This could be it!!

this can’t be the answer.
Why not???
Because animals that bury and hide seeds sometimes forget about them! And this actually HELPS plants to grow and spread their seeds.

Zzzz...oh, chip chip! I’m definitely NOT behind this mystery. I’m too busy sleeping!

Nissela is right, though! She can’t eat chalta tree fruit because it is REALLY hard!
In fact, it seems like elephants are one of the only animals that can reach the fruit AND are strong enough to bite through its shell!!
I eat poopoo.
Read my theory on this mystery!
By Nicolas
Well, if the crocodiles are scaring all the elephants and eating their poop, then maybe that’s why no new chalta trees are growing... They eat poop?!
I like to take out animals who want to eat chalta tree fruit. Oh,
that’s evil!!
doesitsay?! arrived!OMG!Lookwhatjust It’saletterfrom thescientistsattheBengal TigerReserve!
It’s the solution to the mystery! Using all of the evidence and clues that we found, they figured it out!!
In 1995, the people who worked at the Bengal Tiger Reserve built a long fence.
They didn’t think that it would cause any harm.
20 years later in 2015, scientists realized that no new chalta trees were growing on the reserve.
They realized that elephants are the ones who spread chalta tree seeds.
