A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: On Greek Life

For this magazine, we wanted to focus on Greek life, its impact on campus, and the relationship between Greek and non-Greek students. As someone who is not involved in Greek life, I felt like there was a lot I did not understand. How does recruitment work?

What is values-based recruitment? Do Greek students feel the divide between Greek and non-Greek students that I and many of my non-Greek friends feel? What are they doing about diversity (or rather the lack thereof)? How many people actually feel safe going to a Greek house? How do gender and ethnicity play into these questions?

I had my own reasons for never joining: the cost, the assumed pressure of attending social events, and the feeling that I would never really fit in. Through a campus-wide poll, we learned that others, often women and non-binary folks, worried about joining Greek life or attending their social events for fear of sexual assault. Some are just too busy with other activities and classwork. Those who joined did so to find a family, be more involved in their community, and attend social events. All are valid reasons, but I don’t think many of us students take the time to truly understand the other side.

I always believed and will always believe that we, as individuals and a society, can continuously try to learn about and better understand the world around us, including those who are outside of our circles. While today I have a handful of friends and coworkers involved in a fraternity or sorority, there is still so much to learn. Some things people just don’t talk about openly. For these reasons, my team and I conducted a campus-wide survey to do just that: better understand our campus community.

We also reached out to students and faculty to hear their opinions about how they feel Greek life affects campus. This magazine also features an opinion piece from one of the founders of @gburgsurvivors, an Instagram page dedicated to sharing the stories of sexual assault survivors, and an opinion piece from a student who wishes she had joined a sorority for the sense of community. We hope this magazine helps bridge the communication gap between Greek and non-Greek students so we all understand each other a little bit more.

Campus Poll Finds Discrepancies Among Students Regarding Perception of Greek Life BY NICOLE DEJACIMO

A

recent campus survey conducted by The Gettysburgian shows that the perception of Greek life varies widely between students involved and not involved in a Greek organization: 76 percent of Greek students believe that Greek life has had a positive effect on campus while 64 percent of students who never joined Greek life find it to have a negative effect on campus.

The three students who left Greek life all described it as a negative experience and those who are not yet eligible, most of whom are first-years, are almost evenly split.

This campus-wide poll was conducted to understand how students, Greek or nonGreek, perceive Greek life at Gettysburg College; 292 students completed the survey, 11.6 percent of the total fall 2021 student population of 2,518. Gettysburg College recognizes a total of 17 Greek organizations, seven sororities, and nine fraternities.

This semester, fraternity participation decreased from 33 percent of the total degreeseeking population in the fall of 2019 and 2020 to 28 percent this fall, while sorority participation increased from 33 percent, also in the fall of 2019 and 2020, to 35 percent this fall.

Many in Greek life cited “friendship” and “community” as reasons for joining their organizations. Others said it was their way of getting more involved on campus and having an outlet for service projects. One white woman in

the class of 2022 said, “I went to a service-based all-girls high school and loved that kind of environment, and joining Greek life allowed me to keep that comfort and familiarity along with the emphasis on volunteering and service work.”

Numerous students from the classes of 2023 and 2024 explained that the past year left them feeling isolated and disconnected from campus.

They believed that Greek life was the way to remedy that.

“With COVID, I felt isolated and [dis]connected to the Gettysburg community,” said one white, sophomore woman. “This was my way to branch out and meet girls that were motivated and kind, so I joined because a lot of people seemed to be in it for the same reasons as me.”

For students who chose not to join a Greek organization, they cited high costs, social pressures, and safety for not rushing, but most said the idea never interested them.

For some student-athletes, joining a Greek organization is against team policy. Among the responses for why students did not want to join a fraternity or sorority, the word “toxic” appeared in 17 different responses by non-Greek students.

“I decided not to rush for a few reasons. 1) Too expensive and I don’t drink so social dues would be unfair. 2) Culture of drinking. 3) Rampant sexual assault. 4) Culture relies on conformity and regulations.

should have rules that were set by people years ago,” said a Latina, sophomore woman, summing up the majority of responses for why students did not join a fraternity or sorority.

Others expressed feeling uncomfortable with the idea of “paying for friendship.”

Self-identified queer students explicitly expressed that they would not feel comfortable being queer in a Greek organization or would not feel accepted. Fifteen nonbinary students completed the survey. Of those 15, only one was a member of a Greek organization. The other 14 wrote that they felt like they would not be accepted because they are non-binary.

Among every respondent who never joined a fraternity or sorority, 17 mentioned sexual assault, 11 mentioned rape, and 80 mentioned parties when asked what comes to mind when they think about Greek life.

The Relationship Between Greek and Non-Greek Students

“Greek life’s greatest issue is our relationship with the rest of campus,” said Alpha Chi Rho (Crow) President Matt Fellini ’22. “There is a disconnect between how Greek life believes it relates to campus versus how the rest of campus views Greek life.”

Of the 97 Greek respondents, 83.6 percent agreed on some level that Greek students associate themselves with nonGreek students. Only ten Greek students disagreed on some

Despite the pandemic, some organizations are maintaining philanthropic efforts on and off campus. Last year, Sigma Chi raised $53,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation and they look forward to raising more money this year. level, and six remained neutral on the matter. In contrast, of the 151 non-Greek respondents, just 53.6 percent agreed on some level that Greek students associated themselves with non-Greek students while 34.4 percent disagreed and 11.9 percent were neutral.

Some chapter presidents recognized that and offered the following solutions: “One thing we are trying to improve for our organization is facilitating more of a bond between Greek and non-Greek organizations on campus,” said Delta Gamma President Jerrienne Abercrombie ’22.

She emphasized that it’s more effective to have all students join in on Greek philanthropic events, such as Anchor Splash, which, she said, in previous years only Greek students participated.

Inclusivity and Recruitment Data from the Office of Student Organizations and Greek Life and the Office of Institutional Analysis shows that while 21.4 percent of the student body is domestic students of color, only 13 percent of Greek life students fall into that category.

Fellini explained that Crow’s recruitment tries to pull from various groups on campus, “rather than any particular social circle. Because of this, we have reached a wide variety of circles which attracts a diverse pool of new members.”

Crow has 75 percent domestic white students, 22 percent domestic students of color, and 3 percent international students. Fellini also emphasized the importance of diversity in majors, political beliefs, socioeconomic backgrounds, religious beliefs, and geographic origin.

Alexander Stillman ’22, president of Alpha Tao Omega (ATO), detailed the values his fraternity considers when recruiting new members.

“Our goal is to find new members that embody the qualities and characteristics of being a STUD: Scholarship; Tone and temperament;

“Through our philanthropy events on campus, like Anchor Splash and our silent auction with SAE,” said Abercrombie, “we hope to raise money to help support the funding of Delta Gamma’s five schools that provide educational access for those in [the blind and visually-impaired] community.”

Of the 97 Greek students who completed the survey, 76.2 percent of them believe that Greek life has had some sort of positive influence on campus.

13.4 percent of them stayed neutral on the matter and 10.3 percent said they believe the influence is a negative one.

Of those ten who found it negative, eight are women, one is non-binary, and one is a man.

In comparison, 64.2 percent of non-Greek students believe that Greek life’s influence at Gettysburg College is negative on some level, while only 11.9 percent of them believe there is some sort of positive influence.

The rest of the respondents, 23.8 percent of non-Greek students did not have an opinion or did not see a more positive or negative impact.

between Greek and non-Greek students. In 2017, an underage Greek student flipped his car while driving under the influence after his fraternity violated the sober monitor policy, the wrist-banding policy, and served alcohol to a minor.

In the spring of 2018, a student found a picture in the 1980 yearbook of Bob Garthwait wearing a Nazi uniform at a Hogan’s Heroes themed fraternity party. In 2019, the College released ten reports about Gettysburg Greek organizations that violated the law by hazing their incoming members. Just last year, the College suspended Phi Gamma Delta for three years for violating COVID-19 protocols and for numerous “conduct concerns” and suspended Delta Gamma for one year for violating COVID-19 protocols.

“I think of the partying and close-knit communities, but these communities largely promote unhealthy habits and can often bring out the worst in people because of the ‘power’ these people think they have as members of Greek life,” said one non-Greek, white man in the class of 2022.

For the first-years who are not yet eligible, they answered whether or not they planned to join a Greek organization and why.

“I do not think so. Greek life is heavily associated with illicit activities such as underage and frequent drinking, drugs, and sexual assault. Additionally,

sense the restrictive culture but others still do,” said Coppola. “Therefore, it is our responsibility to reach out to organizations on campus to build relationships with them and produce spaces that students feel comfortable in.”

He continued to recommend ways for Greek life to be more inclusive including Greek students attending various club meetings, co-sponsoring events with other organizations, and continuing to educate themselves about the history of their organizations.

the Greek life party scene has been a nationwide contributor to the rapid spread of disease (COVID-19 in particular) on college campuses, and Greek life also has a history of excluding and even instigating hate crimes against members of the LGBTQA+ community,” said one non-binary, white firstyear. “Despite the philanthropy and service aspects of fraternities and sororities, I find no real appeal.”

SIGMA ALPHA IOTA ADVANCES WOMEN’S EQUALITY IN MUSIC

S

igma Alpha Iota (SAI) is an international fraternity of music for women and a self-described philanthropic organization that focuses on raising money to spread awareness of and accessibility to music all over the nation, while also creating a supportive network where women in music are celebrated. The Epsilon Beta chapter here at Gettysburg College fundraises, finances, and hosts social events in support of SAI members and women in music.

Each year, the Epsilon Beta chapter of the fraternity organizes a themed concert series at Gettysburg. This year, the series is titled “Music in Color: A BIPOC Concert Series.” According to SAI’s website, the concerts are

SAI also provides support for existing members and students.

SAI’s scholarships and grants on both the undergraduate and graduate levels allow their members to support one another through their studies here at Gettysburg and beyond. SAI also promotes the work of its individual members by encouraging the community to attend any upcoming recitals. Currently, SAI’s senior recitals include Sam Burr ’22 (bassoon), Summer Burton ’22 (saxophone), Chloe Dougherty ’22 (clarinet), and Amanda Herold ’22 (flute).

SAI’s support doesn’t stop at financing, though. The fraternity hosts social events and conferences that provide members with opportunities

to make connections and aid in networking after their time at the college. Their website includes such events as t-shirt making, movie nights, craft sessions, game events, and various other activities. The fraternity even developed a pen pal system within the organization to stay connected during prior virtual semesters.

SAI requires prospective members to demonstrate a dedicated interest in music and similar projects before joining.

Many members are music majors or minors, but they also accept members from across disciplines. Every member is required to demonstrate their interest in music by completing multiple music courses and maintaining a cumulative 2.5 GPA or above, as well as passing a membership test designed by the national organization.

SAI has made great strides in advancing the movement for women’s equality in music, and they aren’t planning to stop anytime soon.

Much of SAI’s philanthropic work is done through its fundraising for various national projects. SAI supports the Bold Notes program, which helps provide visually impaired musicians with more accessible resources such as large-print music sheets.

They also host the Peopleto-People project, which provides material assistance to disadvantaged individuals, schools, and organizations all around the world, and use their funding to put on the Inter-American Music Awards, a triennial musical composition competition open to composers of all ages from North, Central, and South America.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: ALEXI RALSTON

lexi Ralston ’22, a theatre arts and English with a writing concentration double major, is the president of Sigma Alpha Iota (SAI). SAI is a fraternity on campus that is open to anyone who identifies as a woman and shares a commitment to music. Ralston joined the organization the first semester of her sophomore year at the encouragement of friends from her marching band section. Her junior year, she was the chair of SAI’s social and sisterhood committee, which plans the events the fraternity holds each year. Now, for Ralston’s senior year at Gettysburg, she is president of SAI’s Epsilon Beta chapter.

When asked about her role as president, Ralston said, “A lot of it is behind the scenes organizational stuff like communicating with people at the provincial, regional, and national levels. It’s a lot of keeping people informed so that they know the work we are doing. Another part of my job is representing the group in a positive and encouraging way.

I keep track of details and write reports, not necessarily the glamorous stuff, but it’s been a fun challenge so far.”

Ralston’s involvement in SAI comes with a passion for music. She plays trumpet in the marching band and has been involved in choirs in the past as well. Additionally, she has a love of writing music, and the support of her sisters in SAI has helped this passion grow.

“They are a good group to share music with. Before this

year, I haven’t shared a lot of what I write with other people. It’s nice to have a group of people who are encouraging and pushing you to share your projects and passions with others … The reason I love the organization is because we are a group of women who share a passion, and I think those are the best kind of people to keep company with because they encourage you and are eager to attend your recitals, concerts, and shows.”

Ralston’s theatre capstone is a musical that she has been writing since she was sixteen, which she plans to direct next semester. Titled ClockMaker, the musical follows a protagonist who dreams of being an inventor but deals with setbacks, such as cognitive disabilities. Including real elements of struggle and a time-travel plot, Ralston describes her musical as “a science-fiction fairytale.”

Her capstone will focus on casting the roles and then workshopping the show with the cast in order to establish more character development.

As Ralston works on completing the musical’s manuscript, she is continuing to focus on her SAI duties as president. Last year’s events were mostly online and over Zoom due to the pandemic, so she is looking forward to more social gatherings this

year. SAI will be holding an event called Music in Color, a BIPOC Concert Series for the 2021-2022 academic year. On putting together the series, Ralston said, “I would be remiss not to mention the work that our events committee has done to plan a series that educates and brings awareness to the issues surrounding BIPOC representation in music.”

The concert series has already begun, and SAI is constantly updating the schedule to include more performances that are occurring around campus.

Following graduation in the spring, Ralston sees herself spending some time traveling abroad and keeping her options open for creative opportunities. “I haven’t narrowed down exactly what I want to do, but I like the idea of working for a nonprofit. I can picture myself starting with a company that I feel good working for and seeing where that takes me on my creative journey.”

POSTCARD FROM ABROAD: DANISH SITES, TOURS, AND TREATS

COPENHAGEN – When I originally decided to

study in Copenhagen, Denmark back in spring 2020, I had no idea what the world was about to experience.

After having to postpone my semester abroad twice, I could not believe it when I actually landed in Kastrup Airport. It felt as if it were a dream, even now as I’m nearing the halfway point in the semester.

Being a student in Copenhagen has been a wonderful experience, spending my mornings in classes on engaging topics and my afternoons trying new coffee shops. It has been a wonderful challenge to balance exploring a new country, interesting courses, and spending time with my host family. Originally coming from California, I had never been inside a castle and the palaces in and around Copenhagen have not disappointed. Of course, the Danish monarchy is the oldest in Europe, so how could they?

Touring all the museums has also been an amazing experience, from seeing the rainbow panorama within the ARoS modern art museum in Aarhus to the historical development of arms technology in the Danish War Museum. One favorite of mine so far has been the Danish Architecture Center—while I’m not too much of a fan of architecture, they have a 40-meter slide that brings you down from the fourth floor to the first!

The DIS: Study Abroad in Scandinavia program is structured so that a student spends a large portion of their time within a “core course” while taking other electives. In addition to the time spent in a classroom, core courses also take two study tours: one week in Denmark and one week outside of the country. These tours allow students to critically engage with their topic in academic field studies, while also providing recreational opportunities to experience Denmark with their peers.

My favorite academic field trip was a lecture at the Aarhus University on how climate change will fundamentally impact international relations, given by a professor who teaches there. While it was not something I would have chosen to do myself, mountain biking in Silkeborg was definitely the highlight of the recreational activities. I’ll be leaving on my second study tour on Halloween to go to Kosovo to study the Balkan Wars. The itinerary has not been released yet, but fingers crossed the mountain bikes stay in Denmark!

My favorite routine has become stopping into Sankt Peders Bageri for some onsdagssnegle, or Wednesday snails. Only sold on Wednesdays, these cinnamon rolls are definitely worth getting up early in order to grab one before a morning class. It is also the oldest bakery in Copenhagen, operating since 1652.

One highlight to mention has been seeing my fellow Gettysburgians around the city. Before the weather got bad, some of us met up at Reffen to enjoy their street food market and share our experiences.

My core course is titled Humanitarian Law and Armed Conflict, which, according to the description on Canvas, aims to “enable students to understand the legal challenges of current and future armed conflicts, as well as enable them to critically analyze and evaluate concrete cases using both legal and political analysis.” The first study tour took me all over Denmark, from Odense to Aarhus to Silkeborg to Skanderborg to Aalborg, and back to Copenhagen.

OPINION: THE BRIGHTER SIDE OF GREEK LIFE BY MIRANDA ZAMORA I always used to tell myself that I would never join a sorority. It just never seemed like my kind of thing. I was worried about hazing and cliques, and was especially concerned about the price tag that comes with joining Greek life. So, I joined Alpha Phi Omega on campus as an alternative to joining a social Greek organization. It’s cheaper and focuses more on service to the community. But now, I find myself regretting that I did not go through the recruitment process this semester because I feel like I have missed out on a great opportunity to branch out socially.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, my first year on campus was cut short. Not to mention that after this, I spent a year in mostly online and hybrid classes, as everyone else on campus did as well.

As a result, I have had very few opportunities to meet new people and create new connections. I feel that I would have had a better chance to network and meet new people on campus if I had gone through recruitment.

Many of my friends who are sophomores and juniors went through recruitment this fall and while the process itself seems daunting, I can’t help but wish that I was a sister in a sorority. All the girls that I know who are in sororities always give so much support to their sisters and to other members

of the panhellenic community.

I think that this sense of community is what I admire most about Greek life. I say this because of what I saw from my brother Carter Zamora ’23 and his rush experience. Growing up with Carter, I always knew him as quiet and introverted.

But I saw his personality change when he joined the Alpha Chi Rho – Eta Phi chapter on campus. He has become more social, taken more risks, and become more involved with different groups of people on campus. I have seen him grow and mature as a person through his Greek experience, but most importantly, he has found a group that he fits into and loves being a part of. Seeing his experience in Greek life has changed my views and made me wish that I had taken part in it.

I also participated in several of the philanthropy events held on campus by the different Greek organizations recently, such as Anchor Splash and the Antica Napoli 5K. I had so much fun doing these events and had the chance to meet more people throughout the

weekend. I would even say that I have done more service through those organizations than in my own chapter of Alpha Phi Omega.

Of course, I do admit that Greek life has its issues, and we must not take these issues lightly. It is on those organizations as well as the administration to change and prevent these issues. But after seeing the experiences that my friends have had in their Greek organizations, I have been able to understand the sense of community and family that comes with joining Greek life.

Cesanek Collects Tabs Through ADPi for Charity

F

or Nicole Cesanek ’24, finding ways to change the world for the better is nothing new.

In elementary school, Cesanek’s school administration started a school-wide aluminum pop tab collection competition between homerooms to support the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Philadelphia, including Family Rooms, Care Mobiles, and the Ronald McDonald House, which serve families who have children receiving medical care.

The houses provide families comfortable living spaces, meals, playtime opportunities for children, accredited educational programs, and other support services. The RMHC accept aluminum tabs from items ranging from soup and soda cans to dog food cans and takes them to local recycling centers, where they receive compensation from the pound to fund the services provided at the homes.

While Cesanek’s homeroom did not win the competition, she and her family began to collect aluminum tabs for the competition they assumed would take place the following year. Years passed, however, and the tab collection never returned. By the time Cesanek reached her junior year, her garage

was filled with tabs, which prompted her to take action.

“I figured we weren’t the only family that collected them and didn’t know where to take them, so I wanted to be sure that people had an easily accessible location to take the tabs if they were collecting, but also to catch people’s attention who weren’t collecting to encourage them to start,” said Cesanek.

Cesanek began by dispersing flyers throughout her neighborhood to spread awareness and neighbors dropped their tabs off at her front door. The collection expanded to her community, as well as churches and other

organizations in her hometown, and ultimately, Cesanek helped to bring back the school-wide collection.

Partnering with the National Honor Society at her high school, Cesanek created a committee of five members to spearhead the tab collection fundraiser, naming the organization Tabs for Change.

The fundraiser was set to run for two months, with a school goal of collecting 100 pounds of tabs. The school ultimately exceeded its goal, raising 136 pounds of tabs for the RMHC. Upon graduating high school, Cesanek knew she wanted to continue her efforts to collect tabs for the RMHC while at

to another sister. They will regularly check the box at Mr. G’s and ensure that it continues to properly function.

ADPi will also deliver the tabs to RMHC and store the box in a safe location during winter break. Cosgrave sees Cesanek’s project as an embodiment of the key principles of ADPi, and she commends Cesanek for her work.

Gettysburg College, and found a way to do so through her First-Year Seminar, Public Policy, Change, and Agency.

“We were assigned to create a paper outlining something we wanted to change about Gettysburg or our hometown.

I decided to write a paper outlining plans for a large tab collection bin that could be placed in the center of town for both the people of Gettysburg College and the surrounding community to be a part of,” said Cesanek.

The summer after her first year of college, Cesanek and her dad built the tab collection bin. Cesanek decided to place it at Mr. G’s Ice Cream Shop, a popular ice cream spot in Gettysburg, frequented by students, community members, and tourists. She worked with the Alpha Delta Pi (ADPi) sorority chapter at Gettysburg College, which partners with

RMHC, to accomplish this goal.

“Nicole informed me about her idea this summer and asked if I would be willing to help as an ADPi representative. I accepted the offer because I felt it was an amazing idea and a great way to involve the community,” said Lauren Cosgrave ’23.

Another important aspect of Cesanek’s relationship with ADPi was finding a way to carry on the legacy of her project after she graduates.

“The reason I went to [ADPi] was that I wanted this project to be long-lasting and I felt that if I were the only one taking care of it, then there would be no one to take care of it after I’m gone. I developed a plan for [ADPi’s] involvement in the future for taking care of the collection,” said Cesanek.

Cosgrave explained that after Cesanek graduates, ADPi will pass down her responsibilities

“ADPi’s mission is to create a sisterhood that aligns with high academic standards and strong philanthropic efforts. ADPi’s philanthropy and Nicole’s project both focus on serving those in the RMHC. What started out as a project for a First-Year Seminar has created community-wide involvement,” said Cosgrave.

Cesanek expressed gratitude to ADPi, Mr. G’s owner Mike Gladfelter, her father, and others involved in her project that made it possible for her to present the structure.

Cesanek said, “I hope this structure is successful in bringing the college and the town community together over a mutual cause and fostering long-lasting aluminum tab collections down the road to benefit such an amazing organization.”

Since the structure was placed at Mr. G’s on Aug. 28, Cesanek and ADPi have collected over seventy pounds of tabs, and they hope to continue collecting more tabs in the future.

Former Phi Gamma Delta House Becomes Athena House

The women who chose to live in the house did so because they wanted an opportunity to interact with other sorority women within a communal living space.

Alpha Delta Pi member Lauren Cooke ‘23 said, “I was really interested in getting to meet new people and I’ve seen the benefits that can come from being in a group of likeminded people.”

House Manager and Sigma Sigma Sigma Member Allie Acero ‘23 agreed. “I wanted to meet more people and have more opportunities to interact with other sorority women because I didn’t get the chance to do that during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Acero.

McClennon shared that OSAGL chose the location of the former Phi Gamma Delta house because of the availability of the space and the criteria it met.

“We’re able to make [the house] whatever we want now, and it’s a house of all women, so hopefully, we can make it a safe space for women on campus,” said Cooke.

thena House, the location of the former Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house, is home to a female-only cohort of sorority women, overseen by the Office of Student Activities and Greek Life (OSAGL). 24 women, who are members of Gettysburg College’s six Panhellenic sororities, live in the house.

Trevor McClenon. “For several years, members of the sorority community expressed a desire for an experience similar to the fraternities where sorority women could live together and host programs to promote community in a residential space they controlled.”

In the future, the residents of Athena House want to host events to encourage students to interact with their community.

“A lot of women in my sorority are excited to host events without a need to host them in a fraternity’s house,” said Acero.

“We want to host events so people get to know us and who we are,” said Cooke.

“I suggested an event with the [Gender and Sexuality Resource Center] so women on campus know this is a safe space for them.”

Some residents also view their house as a place where students who do not want to attend fraternity-hosted social events can go.

“For so long fraternities have controlled the social scene on campus and now sororities can have control over the events they want to host,” said Cooke. “I think it’s good that it could offer an alternative option for people who might not feel safe going to a fraternity.”

The office is currently working with the residents of Athena House to accommodate their concerns and to create a better living community for them.

“Residents of the house have brought a few topics up to us, including facilities concerns and how we can better support them in their programming efforts,” said McClennon. “We reviewed this feedback with residents, which led to the development of an additional leadership position focused on programming, additional equipment for the outdoor spaces and common areas, and the change in name to Athena House.”

“We didn’t want it to be called Sorority House because people who aren’t in a sorority can still apply. We know there’s a stigma about Greek life on campus, and we wanted it to be a space for all women, so we had a house meeting and voted to change the name to Athena House,” said Cooke.

Acero added, “Athena deals with education and power, which is what we want for the women here.”

Overall, the residents of Athena House are looking forward to defining their experiences, image, and opportunities in the upcoming year.

“I think the main point of this community is that the women of the house are really excited to start hosting events and to create a safe space for everyone on campus,” said Cooke.

However, there have been minor issues with the transition of Athena House from a fraternity house to a sorority community.

“At first, [coordinating with OSAGL] was hard because our main point of contact, Caitlin Lindsey, left, but in recent weeks, we’ve been able to have better communication,” said Cooke.

“In the future, we hope to work with OSAGL to hold house events.”

“Our main struggle is figuring out who we are and what we want to do,” said Acero.

OPINION: IT’S ON ALL OF US BY EMMA LOVE

“Is that an It’s On Us event?”

“Yeah, looks like it.”

“Wanna go another way?”

“Yeah.”

A

nd with that, we went the long way around so we wouldn’t have to see the folding tables, the t-shirts, and the people from the Title IX Office. It’s always been hard to see these types of events put on by the school. The events where they look you in the face with a plaster-smile proclaiming that “We believe survivors!” when two years prior, they told you that there was nothing that they can do about your rapist.

It’s patronizing, a slap in the face.

It was even worse to see certain men wearing those t-shirts. They are the very same men who have grabbed me at fraternity parties, the men who loop around the block in their cars to catcall me and my friends, the men who persist despite I repeatedly say “no.”

I have had numerous people confide in me the assaults that they have experienced at Gettysburg. Some of them are not in Greek life, while others are actively involved in their sororities and fraternities. They have told me that their trust

Since co-founding the Survivors of Gettysburg activist organization, I have noticed a change in the way we have these conversations on campus. Friends, classmates, and strangers alike are slowly coming forward with their own secrets and stories. I feel like there’s more openness among my peers, a growing willingness to learn more. But while we have posted over one hundred of these stories, there are many more experiences that have gone unshared, unspoken.

But this change hasn’t been reflected by the college administration or the Greek organizations on campus.

There’s still apathy in some communities on campus, as many of my friends involved in Greek life have expressed frustration with the apparent performativeness of their organizations’ efforts to address sexual assault. While there’s been more openness about our sexual assault problem, it must be followed

with substantial policy changes

by Gettysburg College in order to fully realize a safe school environment for its students.

Marginal changes are not enough. It’s easy to have some roundtable discussions a few times a year, a presentation here and there. Performative activism where the college can pat itself on the back for a job well done is insulting to survivors.

I want to see significant, concrete change. And I want to see those changes in Gettysburg’s Title IX policy, orientation programming, Interfraternity Council programming, Panhellenic programming, and the Title IX office itself. It is absolutely crucial that rape survivors are at the forefront of this conversation. We demand to be seen. We demand to be heard. Rape and sexual assault survivors are the students who will be the most impacted by these measures, and we deserve to have a say in this policy-making process.

Even if you yourself haven’t experienced sexual violence at Gettysburg, we all have a responsibility to keep our community safe. It’s not just on us students; it’s also on our administration too.

I feel that same anger when I see those “Not in Our House” flags flying at the fraternity houses. I’ve seen that flag on the flagpole at the house where I met my rapist, as well as at the house where one of my friends was raped by a brother and at the house where another friend was groped repeatedly by a fraternity member.

in the investigation process and the overall college response to sexual assault is so broken, many of them have chosen to not report at all. They point to factors like long investigations, fear of not being believed by the Title IX Office, possible ostracization from their sisters or brothers, and other various reasons for not coming forward. That trust, that survivors will be believed and that their cases will be handled with expediency, is absolutely crucial to fostering the caring campus community that Gettysburg likes to advertise.

lpha Phi Omega (APO) is a national co-ed servicebased organization. The Iota Omicron chapter on Gettysburg College campus has been active since 1952.

The service fraternity provides charity through time and effort for various organizations and causes.

APO has Greek letters, but is not affiliated with Greek life on campus. The organization is open to anyone on campus who has a desire to help their community, starting as soon as their first year.

APO’s President Megan Joy ’22 sat down to talk about the fraternity’s service and social spheres, “We are more service oriented­. We try to emulate a two-thirds service and one-third social balance when it comes to events and fundraising.” The combination of service and social aspects of the organization creates an environment that is unique to APO, allowing for brothers to build relationships through giving back to the community.

The chapter’s Treasurer and former President Justin Chovanec ’22, details how APO differs from Greek life on campus, “While APO has a Greek letter name, we don’t really see ourselves in a similar light. We view our primary purpose as service, not ties to brotherhood or social events.

While we do have these aspects in our organization, they are not our main focus.”

Chovanec shares that being a part of APO is not a solitary club but instead encourages other activities, “We encourage our brothers to take active roles in other campus organizations and find their own ways to serve the community. To many of our

members, APO is not their primary extracurricular activity and that’s fine with us!” APO brothers are active campus members and can additionally be involved in the social Greek organizations on campus.

Members of APO have a wide range of majors and unique perspectives that build a diversified community welcoming students from all backgrounds. The fraternity’s accommodations for time management amongst other clubs and organizations on campus help create an environment different from many’s knowledge of Greek life.

The brotherhood of APO brings together passionate individuals who want to help the greater Gettysburg area as well as the nation while creating strong bonds of friendship.

Haley Bechtel ’22, the Service Vice President, considers the impact of APO on her college experience, “Participating in so many service events has been such a positive impact on my experience here in Gettysburg.

Also, I have had the ability to take on leadership positions within the organization that I will be able to carry with me after college.”

Getting to Know IFC President Mark Seibert

G

oing into his first year at Gettysburg, Mark Seibert ’22 initially felt unsure about whether he would join a Greek organization. His brother, a 2018 grad, was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha, so he knew about Greek life opportunities before stepping foot on campus.

“I knew that Greek life was here, but I wasn’t really too sure if I wanted it to be a part of my experience,” Seibert explained.

His uncertainty quickly fizzled when he became embedded in the campus culture. “My first year, I thought, ‘Yeah, I could see myself doing this.’”

Fast forward three years, Seibert now serves as the president of the Interfraternity Council (IFC), the governing body for Gettysburg’s fraternities. He ended up joining the same fraternity as his brother and taking on leadership roles, including Lamba Chi’s risk manager and the service chair of the IFC.

The IFC links the five North American Interfraternity Conference fraternities in addition to Lambda Chi Alpha and Phi Delta Theta at Gettysburg. As president of the IFC, Seibert oversees activities for each chapter, their budgets, scholarships, and adjudication for conduct violations. “[The IFC] is a way for us

When Seibert ran for president, he had two primary goals in mind: He aimed to address sexual assault and diversity, equity, and inclusion. Since the start of the semester, Seibert said the IFC has been working on both the goals.

Fraternities have been partnering with the Office of Sexual Respect and Title IX, namely through It’s On Us, a campaign to raise awareness of sexual assault and violence prevention. The IFC is also working to revamp Not In Our House, another violence prevention initiative.

Seibert continues to work toward diversity goals this semester alongside the diversity chair of the IFC, who keeps the group up to date on events. Seibert said he aims to “alter recruitment a little bit to make it more inclusive for everyone.”

This year, 13 percent of the students in Greek life—both fraternities and sororities—are domestic students of color.

One percent of those in Greek life are international students.

Gettysburg’s undergraduate population has a total of 21.4 percent domestic students of color and 4.9 percent international students.

“One of my goals is [that] I want to leave Greek life better

than I found it, and so I think we’re trending in the right direction,” Seibert said. “I think part of that could be attributed to the pandemic, because it almost gives us like a little bit of a restart … [to consider] what wasn’t working and how we can do better.”

Alongside his goals for inclusion, Seibert has been aware of bridging the gap between non-Greek and Greek students, especially between organizations. For example, fraternities might co-sponsor events with college houses.

“We’re starting to hear that college houses are having parties and [events] that were not sponsored by strictly Greek organizations,” he said.

In Seibert’s role, he sees firsthand the outcomes of not only building a community on campus, but also utilizing a network of fraternity brothers for professional connections.

“We’re definitely more than the social scene, or more than the weekends,” he said. “There’s a lot of behind the scenes stuff that people just don’t know about, like having each other’s back, or leadership development.”

In addition to his myriad roles in Greek Life, Seibert majors in chemistry, plays on the baseball team, and works in the Admissions Office as a tour guide.

“I blindly went into joining IFC as a sophomore, but [since] then, I’ve kind of been able to develop my role,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed it though. It’s one of the best random things I’ve walked into.”

“The [IFC] creates one big community that supports each other and holds everyone accountable.”

Getting to Know Panhellenic Council President Sara Tomson

ara Tomson ’22, a philosophy and sociology double major with a minor in peace and justice studies, serves as this year’s Panhellenic Council President.

Tomson wanted to join Greek life long before college after seeing the lifelong experiences and relationships her mother had as a member of the Alpha Xi Delta women’s fraternity. In 2020, Tomson became the Chi Delta Panhellenic Delegate, which allowed her to work closely with the Panhellenic Council and ultimately apply to be president for the following year.

“I think Greek life is a great way to make friendships and connections that last a lifetime,” she said. “It also provides so many opportunities within and outside of Greek life. Being a part of the community allows you to meet so many people and get involved in other clubs and organizations on campus.”

Scholarship, service, and cooperation are traits highly valued and included in the Panhellenic Creed. Tomson also mentioned how the work of the Panhellenic and Interfraternity communities have worked to combat oncampus issues as well as help in-state programs.

“I think one of the ways Panhellenic and the Interfraternity community at Gettysburg can be improved is by overcoming some of the stereotypes associated with Greek life that aren’t accurate at the Gettysburg campus,” Tomson said. “I think many unaffiliated students only see Greek life for its social events and don’t see some of the key principles and aspects of Panhellenic and Interfraternity organizations such as scholarship, philanthropy, and so much

more.”

By creating a community of all sororities and women’s fraternities, the Panhellenic Council provides a support system of women who are constantly empowering, caring for, and holding each other accountable. They encourage each other to be leaders and to strive for a strong work ethic, in and outside of the classroom. Panhellenic life also encourages them to step out of their comfort zone socially, reach out to other women in the community, and be socially responsible citizens of Gettysburg College.

That bond created between women is what lead Tomson to the Panhellenic community in the first place, having seen the lifelong effect it had on her mother, and it is still part of what drives her in her service today.

The Panhellenic Council is the governing body of the six National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) sororities at Gettysburg College. As president, she runs the Panhellenic executive board and general meetings each week and she works closely with the Panhellenic Council as well as fraternities at Gettysburg. Currently, the council is working on planning a “Why Go Greek?” week from Oct. 25 to 30.

The Council works to promote unity among these sororities and fraternities and provide educational opportunities and

BEHIND THE SCENES OF GAME DAY BY JACK HERR

T

he two-person team that makes up Gettysburg College Athletics Communications is Corey Jewart, Director of Athletic Communications, and Jennifer Mower, Assistant Director of Athletic Communications.

They run the department and employ a large staff of student assistants who aid Jewart and Mower in game day operations.

Without these two, game day would look a lot different.

According to Jewart, the basics of game day preparation have not changed much in the last 60 years. Of course, technological advancement has required adaptation and opened up new opportunities for Athletic Communications, but taking and reporting statistics is still one of the primary tasks for Jewart and Mower, even if it’s no longer done with pen and paper. At any given game, one of them is behind a computer, plugging numbers into a program specialized for each particular sport and communicating with a spotter to ensure accuracy.

While their eyes are always on the game to catch each and every play, they also are constantly multitasking to ensure all of the other game day jobs are being done efficiently.

Stats are only the beginning, though. Jewart went on to describe the other numerous “miscellaneous things” that go into game day preparation.

The rosters and starting lineups for both teams have to be correctly set in advance, announcements have to be made on social media, and

games have to be sufficiently staffed.

Jewart and Mower currently employ a group of 34 students who are crucial in helping run game day operations.

These students are involved in posting score updates on Instagram, taking pictures, working the scoreboard and game clock, operating the camera, and helping record stats. The amount of workers required per game varies based on demand, according to Jewart: “It ranges from two to three people to do a baseball game to eight, nine, or ten for football or men’s lacrosse,” he said. Seven of these student workers also help out in the office, doing more behind the scenes work such as writing player bios, making graphics, and inputting statistics.

Perhaps the most important facet of Athletic Communications in recent years, though, has been live streaming. Jewart explained that when his team started to dabble in live streaming in 2008, the process looked much different.

“It was very basic,” he said, “running a miniature camera feed into a laptop. The resolution does not even compare to what it is today; if we do less than 1080p now, we get called out on it.”

That former spartan setup has evolved into a complex arrangement of “the latest and greatest” cameras (sometimes two to have multiple angles of gameplay), the computer program that facilitates the production of the livestream,

and the many “dongles” and wires needed to connect it all and make the magic happen.

Not every fan can make it to every game, so giving family and friends of Gettysburg or other Centennial Conference student-athletes the ability to watch the game wherever they are is an important service.

Jewart remarked that his team’s live streams have been very successful.

“You’re talking upwards of 1,000 viewers for some of them. We’ve set the conference record with over 8,000 viewers for Gettysburg against Salisbury in men’s lacrosse. We also have the women’s record with over 6,000 viewers. We reach a lot of people in a short amount of time when we live stream, and that’s the easiest way to get the branding and messaging across from the institution.”

When people watch a live stream from Gettysburg’s Athletic Communications team, they can expect a high-quality product, including on-screen graphics, instant replays, and live commentary from current or former students who know the ins and outs of the game being played.

Even if a fan does not have the time to watch a live stream, they can periodically check the Bullets athletics Instagram or Twitter page for score updates and game highlights.

“Something that’s obviously been huge in the last ten years is social media,” Mower said.

“That’s where our studentathletes go to see their goals scored. They want to see their success posted.”

whatever profession you’re in. There are many different skills you can learn from Athletic Communications that you can apply in any field, like time management and multitasking.”

responsible for maintaining the Bullets athletics website, where one can find all of the sports information they could ask for: individual game recaps for every competition, box scores and statistics from current and past years, stories and news updates, studentathlete pictures and bios, team rosters and schedules, and much more. Additionally, one of the first places that potential recruits and their families explore is the athletics website, so maintaining it becomes especially important for the future of Gettysburg athletics.

While the number of hits took a dip during the pandemic, Jewart said that they usually have over two million visitors to gettysburgsports.com per year.

“Ultimately, we’re trying to get the branding and marketing out there for every single team, from football, the team with the largest roster, to women’s golf, the team with the smallest roster.”

When asked whether their work was pivotal to the success of Gettysburg athletics, Mower affirmed that she and Jewart “definitely play a crucial role.”

“I don’t think many people really know what goes into it. They don’t see all of the behind-the-scenes stuff that we have to do in order to make all 24 athletic teams be successful.”

Furthermore, both Mower and Jewart argue that being in Athletic Communications on the Division III level introduces another level of challenges.

Larger DI or DII schools may have ten to fifteen fulltime employees in Athletic Communications, people with communications degrees that are looking to earn a job in the field.

In contrast, Jewart and Mower are “relying on student workers … many of whom probably do not have an interest in going into Athletic Communications.

We rely on them to be able to balance the demands of a Gettysburg College student with the work we give them, and we often have to train them during the job.”

In spite of these challenges, both Mower and Jewart find their jobs extremely rewarding. Mower emphasized that “everyone needs communications experience in

In her first year at Gettysburg, the women’s soccer team missed the conference playoffs. The next year, though, they not only got back into the conference playoffs, but they earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

“It was awesome to see the accomplishment,” she reminisced. “At the end of the day, it’s all about the studentathletes and the coaches; we’re just here, behind the scenes, to promote their success.”

Both Mower and Jewart are also ecstatic to see a return to a semblance of normalcy on campus and in athletic competition. All teams have been impacted at some point by the pandemic, and it is exciting for them to see everyone back out on the field.

“To see the energized, reinvigorated student-athletes out there competing each and every game is invigorating for us as well,” Jewart emphasized.

Athletic Communications is a dynamic, demanding, but also rewarding field to work in. What Corey Jewart and Jennifer Mower do for Bullets athletics is essential towards the teams’ successes, and their work creates a community that engages student-athletes and coaches, their family and friends, and all fans of Gettysburg athletics.
