Curated by Studio 26 Neo Non-objective is a group exhibition of Sunshine Coast artists whose practices explore contemporary approaches to non-objective abstraction.
Neo Non-objective marks a revival of formalist concerns that elevate the organisation of materials and a reduction of that which is immediately identifiable. With monochrome sensibilities, these works look inward to process and materiality, allowing a reduction that then opens outwards again to examine beyond itself.
Neo Non-objective is an exhibition of works by Michael Ciavarella, Petalia Humphreys, Jaime Kiss and June Sartracom.
Michael Ciavarella is an interdisciplinary artist who works across ceramics, sculpture and painting. As a curator and director of The Matchbox show, he creates a platform for artist and ceramic enthusiasts alike to come together from all around the world. Ciavarella is an advocate for cultural understanding through art and communicates such meaning in his artwork. His concepts incorporate national heritage and identity. Michael Ciavarella has a Bachelor of Art in Ceramics from La Trobe University, Bendigo Victoria. Ciavarella has taught ceramics on the Sunshine Coast for 19 years. Humphreys’ hard-edge, geometric forms encourage an interactive approach, inviting the audience to engage in playful ways, considering ways of seeing, perceiving and viewing. Aiming to engage inquisitiveness and challenge perception through mapping of spaces her works spark curiosity and invite the viewer to renegotiate their experience of the familiar.
Petalia Humphreys lives and works on Gubbi Gubbi country. A QUT graduate Humphreys most recently exhibited Noosa Regional Gallery, Webb Gallery, Metro Arts and Outer Space. Humphreys’ is a producer and curator for Studio 26 and a sessional teacher in Design at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Petalia HumphreysFrom a contemporary perspective through constructive language, Jaime Kiss finds his artistic drive in existence and reality itself. Enlightened by science and philosophy translating materiality into geometric compositions using the power of colour and simplicity. Kiss’ works provoke questions of how we perceive ourselves and the world around us to interpret reality, engaging rather than just to inform, inviting experimentation rather than just to look, but even more, to sense and change, thrive and grow.
Jaime Kiss is an artist and graphic designer based on the Sunshine Coast. Born in Brazil, Kiss graduated from UNESP - São Paulo with a Bachelor of Visual Arts - Graphic Design. Moving to London, Kiss has exhibited and curated exhibitions across Europe and UK, extending his studies at University of Arts London.

June Sartracom’s practice investigates the interplay of light, space and perception. Through reductive, white monochromatic relief paintings and drawings Sartracom explores the illusionary, allusionary and physical ideas of space. Dynamic lines and tilted shapes are used to imbue a sense of movement, not just of the forms but also of the medium. The manipulation of surface and the quiet of the monochrome invite a quiet contemplative encounter with the viewer.
Often hung in one of many possible modular formations, Satracom’s works collectively allude to perceptual forms that pays homage to the square. The shape from which all other shapes are said to be derived. Sartracom has exhibited at Factory 49, William Wright Project Space, Annandale Gallery and Noosa Regional Gallery. June is currently based in the Sunshine Coast QLD.
