The Tommy Bache Community Garden Y

ou will have noticed new fencing erected around part of the land adjacent to The Florrie on Mill Street, we’ve cleared loads of debris, rebuilt walls and created art work on the walls and flag poles towering along Mill Street. We have entered into a new Licence Agreement with Liverpool City Council and with funding from S106 have started to transform the land into a green space for local people to use and enjoy.

Tommy, along with many other old boys were part of the campaign to save and restore The Florrie Tommy Bache is one of Dingle’s and Liverpool’s boxing greats. Ask anyone from L8 who’s the greatest boxer to ever come from The Florrie and many will name Tommy Bache alongside other great names such as Alan Rudkin, Billy Williams, Dick Tiger and Larry Paul. Only last year the late Larry Paul’s family honoured him by spreading some of his ashes in The Florrie garden and there is a bench to commemorate the great Billy Williams who Bache grew up with, sparred and trained with and fought in the boxing ring on many occasions. Local lad Tommy won silver medal at flyweight level at The

1954 Empire Games and was four times winner of The Best Member Cup. A true Dingle legend, sportsman and Florrie old boy, Tommy still comes into The Florrie every day, sharing stories of growing up in the Dingle and representing his country. Tommy, along with many other old boys were part of the campaign to save and restore The Florrie. He formed part of a voluntary security group to tin up The Florrie when it was abandoned in the 1980’s and save it from further decay and destruction. We think there is no greater accolade that we can give Tommy than naming The Florrie’s new community garden in his honour. The Tommy Bache Community Garden is there for everyone to use, but we desperately need volunteer gardeners, no experience necessary to get involved in growing, planting and maintaining the garden. If you’re interested in helping out please call in and see us. Let’s make springtime at The Florrie blooming glorious!
