Aus gutem Grund wurde die gleichnamige Hauptstadt mit ihren zahlreichen Museen 1998 von der UNESCO zur Kulturhauptstadt der Arabischen Welt ernannt.

Wir widmen uns in dieser Ausgabe auch der Kunst: der hohen Kunst der Uhrmacherei. Erlesene Exemplare der Haute Horlogerie sind exklusive SchmuckstĂźcke und tickende Kunstwerke zugleich. esert, skyscrapers and lavish luxury. Is this what you associate with the United Arab Emirates? You would be right. But also wrong. Because the UAE has far more to offer than sun, sand and high-tech glamour. The emirate Sharjah, which we introduce this time, delights increasing numbers of visitors with its completely unique artistic and cultural diversity. It was therefore appropriate that the eponymous capital with its numerous museums was appointed UNESCO Culture Capital of the Arab World in 1998.

In this issue we also focus on the arts: the fine art of watchmaking. Select examples of haute horlogerie are both exclusive gems and ticking masterpieces at the same time. And not only that.

With know-how and a little luck a fine watch not only enhances the wrist, it also brings a tidy profit for its owner.

A 1969 Rolex Daytona was sold at auction for 1.1. million dollars last year.

Hard to believe that the very same model was on offer for less than 1,500 dollars at the end of the 1980s. Deals such as this are the exception, of course.

Sharjah „Aufgehende Sonne“ … so poetisch lautet die Übersetzung von sharjah. ein mehr als passender name für das drittgrößte emirat der Vae. sharjah, das teils am Persischen Golf, teils an der Ostküste am Golf von Oman liegt, erhebt sich langsam aus dem schatten seiner großen, nur wenige fahrminuten entfernten nachbarn dubai und abu dhabi.

Zu recht. das kleine emirat hat viel zu bieten. außergewöhnliche naturkulissen, einzigartige Kunst- und Kulturvielfalt begeistern von Jahr zu Jahr immer mehr Touristen.

KULTURHAUPTSTADT DER ARABISCHEN WELT für kulturbegeisterte Traveller ist der Besuch des etwa 2600 km² großen emirats mit der gleichnamigen hauptstadt mehr als lohnenswert. Bereits 1998 wurde sharjah von der UnesCO zur Kulturhauptstadt der arabischen Welt ernannt. eine bedeutende auszeichnung, aber nicht die einzige: in 2015 richtet sich in sharjah alle aufmerksamkeit auf die festivitäten als Capital of the arab Tourism. das emirat wurde auch zur hauptstadt der islamischen Kultur 2014 gewählt. diese auszeichnung hat das emirat seinen bemerkenswerten Beiträgen zur erhaltung, förderung und Verbreitung der lokalen, arabischen und islamischen Kultur zu verdanken. eine herzensangelegenheit von seiner hoheit scheich dr. sultan bin mohammed al-Qasimi, mitglied des Obersten rats der Vae und Oberhaupt von sharjah, der sich dem schutz und Wahrung der Kunst- und Kulturvielfalt sharjahs verschrieben hat. als andere herrscher Wolkenkratzer hochzogen, hat er mit Beginn der 1980er Jahre über 20 museen eingerichtet. die Liebe zur Kunst liegt der herrscherfamilie in den Genen: 2009 übernahm Prinzessin hoor al-Qasimi, Tochter des scheichs und selbst Künstlerin, die Leitung der sharjah art foundation. ihrer Begeisterung und ihrem einsatz ist unter anderem die sharjah Biennale zu verdanken, das größte event der arabischen Gegenwartskunst, das auch im nächsten Jahr wieder zahlreiche Kunstliebhaber in das kleine emirat locken wird (5. märz bis 5. Juni 2015).

sharjah ist für sonnenanbeter ein Paradies. ein wolkenloser himmel, warme Temperaturen an Land und im Wasser. es bietet sich an, die Wüstenmetropole zwischen Oktober und april zu besuchen, dann klettert das Thermometer tagsüber nur noch selten über 30 C°. in der restlichen Zeit muss man sich auf hitze pur einstellen, und sightseeing bei 40 C° und mehr ist nicht jedermanns sache.

Sharjah ist das einzige Emirat mit zwei Küsten.

sharjah international airport kann direkt mit Qatar airways und Zwischenstopp in doha angeflogen werden. sharjah liegt zudem keine halbe stunde fahrzeit vom flughafen dubai entfernt, der von europa aus täglich angeflogen wird. nach knapp sechs flugstunden landet man am internationalen flughafen von dubai. ein Jetlag ist eher unwahrscheinlich, in der sommerzeit beträgt der Zeitunterschied nur plus zwei, im Winter plus drei stunden. für die einreise in die Vae ist ein reisepass nötig, der noch mindestens sechs monate nach der geplanten ausreise gültig sein muss. mit der Passkontrolle am flughafen erhalten europäer mit dem stempel in den reisepass ein kostenloses Touristenvisum. die aufenthaltserlaubnis gilt 30 Tage und kann gegen eine Gebühr um weitere 30 Tage verlängert werden. Kinder müssen im Besitz eines eigenen reisepasses sein.

Bis in die 1940er Jahre war die haupteinnahmequelle sharjahs die Perlenfischerei. das Leben in der beschaulichen region änderte sich schlagartig mit dem ersten erdölfund 1972 im mubarak Oilfield nahe der insel abu mousa. seit 1974 wird in sharjah erdöl und seit 1990 auch erdgas gefördert. heute verfügt das emirat über zehn Prozent der bekannten erdölreserven der Welt. Trotz des reichtums und fortschritts legt sharjah großen Wert auf die Beibehaltung seiner arabischen identität. es ist kein emirat der superlativen. dafür legt das emirat umso mehr Wert auf die Bewahrung seiner einzigartigen Kultur und natur – und das nicht erst seit dem Ölreichtum. Bereits 1907 wurde in sharjah die erste schule der emirate, die al-islahal-Taymeya-schule, eröffnet. die erste Bibliothek der emirate, die al-TaymeyaBibliothek, folgte 1933. Und: sharjah war 1942 das erste emirat, das frauen den Zugang zu Bildung ermöglichte.

ATTRAKTIVE VIELFALT sharjah ist für Touristen, die nicht unbedingt auf der suche nach hightechentertainment sind, ein attraktives und familienfreundliches reiseziel. das PreisLeistungs-Verhältnis in den hotels und restaurants ist hervorragend. die historische altstadt mit ihren unzähligen Gassen und Palästen ist an sich schon ein highlight. nicht zu vergessen, die schimmernden Küsten mit ihren traumhaften sandstränden, die pittoresken Wüstenlandschaften oder die ältesten mangrovenwälder arabiens. in der stadt warten moderne shoppingzentren, traditionelle souks, beindruckende moscheen und einzigartige museen auf die Touristen aus aller Welt. die „aufgehende sonne“ mit ihrem kulturellen erbe und ihren naturschönheiten hat ihren Besuchern wirklich viel zu bieten. fotos: © sCTda

sharjah ist traditioneller und auch konservativer als seine nachbarn dubai und abu dhabi. so herrscht hier striktes alkoholverbot, auch in den hotels. Besucher sollten in puncto Kleidung und Benehmen unbedingt respekt gegenüber dem islamischen Glauben zollen. Westliche Kleidung ist kein Problem, sofern sie nicht allzu freizügig ist. Badeoutfits gehören an den hotelstrand oder -pool, beim sightseeing und auf shoppingtouren müssen Knie und schultern bedeckt sein. aufreizende Kleidung (körperbetont, bauchfrei, durchsichtig etc.) ist ebenfalls ein no-go, genauso wie zu kurze shorts bei männern. der austausch von Zärtlichkeiten unter Paaren, wie beispielsweise Küssen oder Umarmen, ist in der Öffentlichkeit nicht erlaubt. die emirate sind bekannt für ihre außergewöhnlich niedrigen Kriminalitätsraten. da macht sharjah keine ausnahme. das emirat ist nicht nur eine sehr schöne, sondern auch sehr sichere destination.

A more than fitting name for the third largest emirate in the UAE. Sharjah lies partly on the Persian Gulf and partly on the eastern coast of the Gulf of Oman and is slowly emerging from the shadow of its larger neighbours Dubai and Abu Dhabi, just a short drive away.

And rightly so. The small emirate has

much to offer. Unusual natural settings, unique artistic and cultural diversity delight more and more tourists from year to year.

CULTURE CAPITAL OF THE ARAB WORLD For culture-loving travellers a visit to the approximately 2,600 km² emirate with its eponymous capital is more than worthwhile. In 1998 Sharjah was named Culture Capital of the Arab World by UNESCO. A significant distinction, but not the only one: in 2015 all attention will be on the festivities in its role as Captial of Arab Tourism. The emirate gained this distinction thanks to its remarkable contribution to the preservation, promotion and spread of local, Arab and Islamic culture. This is an issue close to the heart of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed al-Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Sharjah, who is dedicated to the protection and preservation of the artistic and cultural diversity of Sharjah. Whilst other rulers were putting up skyscrapers, in the early 1980s he established over 20 museums. A love of art is in the genes of the ruling family: in 2009 Princess Hoor al-Qasimi, daughter of the sheik and herself an artist, took over the leadership of the Sharjah Art Foundation.

Her enthusiasm and commitment can be seen in events such as the Sharjah Biennale, the largest event for Arab contemporary art, which will draw numerous art lovers back to the small emirate next year (5 March to 5 June 2015).

PRESERVING ARAB IDENTITY Until the 1940s the chief source of income for Sharjah was pearl fishing. Life in the sleepy region changed dramatically with the discovery of oil in 1972, in the Mubarak Oilfield near the island of Abu Mousa. Oil has been extracted

Cloudless skies, warm temperatures on land and in the water. It is advisable to visit the desert metropolis between October and April, as then the thermometer seldom rises above 30 C° in the daytime. During the rest of the time tourists should brace themselves for the heat, and sightseeing at 40 C° and over is not for everyone.

Travellers can fly direct to Sharjah International Airport with Qatar Airways and a stopover in Doha. Sharjah is also less than a half-hour drive from Dubai Airport, which is served daily from Europe.

After an approximately six-hour flight passengers land at the international airport of Dubai. Jet lag is unlikely, in the summertime the time difference is just two hours ahead, in winter three.

A passport is required to enter the UAE, with this valid for at least six months after planned departure. With passport control at the airport Europeans receive a free tourist visa with the stamp in the passport. The visa is valid for 30 days,

and can be extended for a further 30 days in return for a fee. Children are required to have their own passport.

Sharjah is more traditional and conservative than its neighbours Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Alcohol is strictly forbidden, including in hotels. With regard to clothing and behaviour, visitors should show respect to the Islamic faith. Western clothing is not a problem as long as it is not too revealing. Bathing costumes belong on the hotel beach or in the pool, knees and shoulders should be covered when sightseeing and shopping. Provocative clothing (close-fitting, bare midriff, see-through etc.) is also a no-go, as are overly brief shorts for men. Displays of affection amongst couples, such as kissing or cuddling, are not permitted in public.

The United Arab Emirates are known for their unusually low crime rates. Sharjah is no exception to this. The emirate is not only a very beautiful destination, it is also a very safe one.

Today, the emirate has ten percent of the world’s known oil reserves. Despite the wealth and progress, Sharjah still places great value on preserving its Arab identity. This is no emirate of superlatives. Instead, the emirate places greater emphasis on preserving its unique culture and nature – and this did not begin with the onset of oil wealth.

As early as 1907 the first school in the Emirates was opened in Sharjah, the Al-Islah-al-Taymeya school. The first library in the Emirates, the Al-Taymeya Library, followed in 1933. And in 1942 Sharjah was the first emirate to grant women access to education.

ATTRACTIVE DIVERSITY Sharjah is an attractive and familyfriendly travel destination for tourists who are not necessarily looking for hightech entertainment. Value for money in the hotels and restaurants is outstanding.

The historic old town with its numerous alleyways and palaces is a highlight in its own right. And let us not forget the shimmering coasts with their fabulous sandy beaches, the picturesque desert landscapes and the oldest mangrove forests in Arabia. In the city, modern shopping centres, traditional souks, impressive mosques and unique museums await tourists from around the world.

Nachhaltigkeit im Fokus: Naturschutzgebiete… Die Natur ist ein wohlgehüteter Schatz des Emirats. So wird in Sharjah sehr auf die Erhaltung der Naturschutzgebiete Sir-Bu-Nair-Island (maritimes Schutzgebiet), Khor Kalba und Al-Zulaiyma enclave (Sanddünen) geachtet. Dazu tragen ökologische Aufklärungsarbeit und das Pollution Control Department für die Verringerung der Umweltbelastung in Sharjah bei. Davon profitieren aber auch die Touristen, die in Khor Kalba unter anderem einen der schönsten Muschelstrände der Welt und eine vielfältige Vogelwelt bewundern können. Das Areal endet in den ältesten Mangrovenwäldern Arabiens, die Heimat zahlreicher bedrohter Tierarten. Auch das Hinterland der Region mit seiner spektakulären roten Sandwüste lädt zu unvergesslichen Exkursionen ein.

Inspirierende Museen… Es gibt zahlreiche Museen in Sharjah, die man sich nicht entgehen lassen sollte, hier nur eine kleine Auswahl: Besucher des Sharjah Heritage Museums tauchen ein in die vielfältige Geschichte, faszinierende Kultur und traditionellen Bräuche des Emirats.

Mehr als 5.000 erlesene Artefakte aus der ganzen islamischen Welt können im Sharjah Museum für islamische Zivilisation bewundert werden. Das Museum im historischen Herzen von Sharjah City am Majarrah Ufer war früher ein traditioneller orientalischer Souk und ist in seiner Art einzigartig in den VAE. Kunstvolle Schriften als Zeitzeugen arabischer Geschichte werden im Kalligraphiemuseum, dem einzigen in der gesamten Golfregion, ausgestellt. Besucher erhalten einen spannenden Einblick in diese lebendige Kunstform und ihrer tief im Islam verwurzelten historischen Bedeutung.

Inspirational museums… There are numerous museums in Sharjah that should not be missed, here is a small selection: visitors to the Sharjah Heritage Museum are immersed in the varied history, fascinating culture and traditional customs of the emirate. Over 5,000 select artefacts from throughout the Islamic world can be admired in the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilisation.

The museum is located at the historic heart of Sharjah City, on the Majarrah bank, and was formerly a traditional oriental souk. It is unique of its kind in the UAE. Artistic texts as witnesses to Arab history are exhibited at the Calligraphy Museum, the only one in the entire Gulf region. Visitors gain an exciting insight into this vibrant art form and its historic significance, deeply rooted in Islam.

Sustainability in focus: nature reserves… Nature is a well-protected

Arabisches Shopping: Souk Al-Arsah…

Nicht weit von dem Al-Naboodah-Haus entfernt liegt Souk Al-Arsah, einer der ältesten Souks der VAE. Vier Tore mit traditionellen Holztüren gewähren den Besuchern, meist Touristen, Eintritt.

In über 80 Souks werden Kunsthandwerk, Schmuck, arabische Gewänder, Teppiche und Kräuter, aber auch alte Waffen wie Schwerter und Dolche angeboten. Wer eine Pause von Bummeln und Shopping benötigt, ist im Coffee Shop bestens aufgehoben.

Die einheimischen Speisen und Süßwaren, begleitet von einer Tasse Tee oder arabischen Kaffee, sollte man sich nicht entgehen lassen.

Arab shopping: Souk Al-Arsah… Not far from the Al-Naboodah building is the Souk Al-Arsah, one of the oldest souks in the UAE. Four gates with traditional wooden doors grant access to visitors, mostly tourists. In over 80 souks crafts, jewellery, Arab clothing, carpets and herbs are offered, together with old weapons such as swords and daggers. For those seeking a break from shopping the Coffee Shop is just the place. The local dishes and sweets accompanied by a cup of tea or Arabian coffee should not be missed.

Beeindruckend: Khor Fakkan…

Eingerahmt von zwei Landzungen, an einer wunderschönen Bucht gelegen, ist die Stadt Khor Fakkan ein Highlight für Touristen. Ein langer Sandstrand mit Promenade lädt zum Flanieren ein.

Eine entspannte Bootstour auf dem Kanal, das Bestaunen der Wasserfontänen oder eine Fahrt mit dem Eye of the Emirates, einem 60 Meter hohen Riesenrad, sind absolute Must-dos eines Sharjah-Besuchs.

Entertainment is also available, albeit not so spectacular as in the neighbouring emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The one-kilometre-long Al Qasba Canal encloses the amusement centre and the entertainment strip of Sharjah. Cafés and restaurants are clustered together here. A relaxing boat trip on the canal, admiring the fountains or a trip on the Eye of the Emirates, a 60-metre-high big wheel, are absolute must-dos for a visit to Sharjah.

in den VAE Ganzjährig Sonnenschein, das Meer nie weit entfernt, eine extrem niedrige Kriminalitätsrate, moderne Infrastruktur und ein hoher Lebensstandard – für Ausländer spricht vieles für einen Immobilienerwerb in den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten.

r schien keine Grenzen zu kennen, der Immobilienboom in den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten. Zumindest bis Ende 2008, dann kam das böse Erwachen. Vor allem das bauwütige Dubai hatte unter den Folgen des Immobiliencrashs zu leiden. Doch das Emirat erhob sich wie Phönix aus der Asche. Nach ein paar Jahren der Stagnation verzeichnet die Immobilienbranche wieder hervorragende Wachstumszahlen – und das nicht nur im Emirat Dubai. Kaufpreise und Mieten steigen in den VAE und locken zahlreiche Interessenten in die schicken Wüstenmetropolen. Hier Eigentum zu erwerben ist einfacher als man denkt und gerade jetzt besonders spannend. Noch gibt es interessante, bezahlbare Objekte, doch bei der positiven Prognose, könnten diese bald rar gesät sein.

Ob als Urlaubsdomizil, Investition, Wohnoder Firmensitz, emiratische Immobilien sind bei Ausländern beliebt. Allerdings sollte man sich vorab über den Sinn und Nutzen des Objekts und der rechtlichen Lage im Klaren sein. In den VAE gibt es kein föderales Immobilienrecht, jedes der sieben Emirate hat diesbezüglich seine eigenen Regelungen.

IMMOBILIENRECHT DUBAI Bereits seit 2002 können Ausländer im Emirat Dubai Immobilien erwerben, allerdings auf bestimmte Regionen beschränkt und lediglich mit einer Eintragung im Eigentümerverzeichnis. Das 2006 verabschiedete „Law No 7 of 2006 regarding Land Registration in the Emirate of Dubai stellt klar, in welchem Maße auch von Ausländern Eigentum

an Grundstücken erworben werden kann, und wie die Rechte registriert werden“ (Quelle: Deutsch-Emiratische Industrie- und Handelskammer). Die Objekte können heute für eine unbegrenzte Zeit erworben werden (Freehold). Das war nicht immer so, früher war der Besitz einer Liegenschaft auf 99 Jahre begrenzt. Was jedoch immer noch Beschränkungen unterliegt, ist die Lage.

Ausländer dürfen nur in bestimmten Zonen Immobilien kaufen. Wer jetzt fürchtet, dass Nicht-Emiratis den weniger schönen Teil des Kuchens abbekommen, kann beruhigt sein. Diese ausgewählten Zonen sind sehr attraktiv, wie das Beispiel von The Palm zeigt. Die künstliche Insel ist mittlerweile für viele Prominente ein zweites Zuhause. Aber auch Dubai Marina, Arabian Ranches oder Emirates Hills sind exklusive Plätze, wo es sich hervorragend leben lässt.

Um keine böse Überraschung zu erleben, sollte man sich Maklern anvertrauen, die bei RERA (Real Estate Regulatory Authority) registriert sind. Wer sich für ein Objekt entscheidet, erhält nach dem Kauf und der vollständigen Zahlung den Title Deed, vergleichbar mit einem Grundbucheintrag. Der Erwerbsvorgang ist recht unkompliziert, ein simpler privatschriftlicher Kaufvertrag ist ausreichend – und bindend. Ein weiterer Vorteil: Nach dem Kauf kann eine Aufenthaltsgenehmigung beantragt werden, allerdings ist damit keine Arbeitserlaubnis verknüpft.

IMMOBILIENRECHT ABU DHABI Wer Einwohner eines Mitgliedsstaats der GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) ist,

darf in den Investment Zones Eigentum erwerben. Andere Ausländer hingegen haben nur die Möglichkeit, Wohnungen zu kaufen, verwehrt ist ihnen der Erwerb von Grund und Boden. Aber: Wer Interesse an einer Villa oder einem Bürogebäude im größten Emirat hat, kann ein 99-jähriges Leasehold erwerben, das sich nicht nur auf die Immobilie, sondern auch auf Grund und Boden erstreckt.

STEUERVORTEILE?

Die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate haben aus dem Bauboom-Desaster von 2009 gelernt. Angestrebt wird ein Wachstum der Immobilienbranche mit Bedacht und Umsicht. Das macht die VAE für alle, die eine Auszeit unter blauem Himmel oder eine rentable Investition suchen, attraktiver denn je.

Die VAE sind ein Steuerparadies, es gibt unter anderem keine Vermögenssteuer, Grundsteuer, Wohnraumsteuer, Erbschaftssteuer, Veräußerungsgewinnsteuer oder Grunderwerbssteuer. Aber: Für ausländische Immobilienbesitzer heißt dies nicht, dass ihre Einkünfte aus

here seemed to be no limit to the property boom in the United Arab Emirates. At least until the end of 2008 and then came the rude awakening.

Dubai, where the drive to build was crazy, suffered particularly hard from the consequences of the property crash.

But the Emirate rose like a phoenix from the ashes. After a few years of stagnation, the property sector is once again showing excellent growth figures – and not only in the Emirate of Dubai. Purchase prices and rents are rising in the UAE and attracting numerous interested parties to the chic desert metropolis. Buying property here

is easier than you think and just now particularly exciting. Still, there are still some interesting, affordable properties, but with the positive forecast, these might soon be quite scarce.

As a holiday home, investment, residential or office, property in the UAE is popular with foreigners. But you should be clear about the purpose and use of the property and the legal situation beforehand. In the UAE, there are no federal property laws; each of the seven Emirates has its own particular regulations.

Foreigners have been able to buy property in the Emirate of Dubai since 2002, but it has been limited to certain regions and only with an entry in the ownership directory. The “Law No. 7 of 2006 regarding Land Registration in the Emirate of Dubai clarifies to what extent foreigners can acquire title to real estate, and how the rights are registered“ (source: DeutschEmiratische Industrie- und Handelskammer). The properties can be purchased today for an unlimited period (freehold).

This was not always the case; previously ownership of a property was limited to 99 years. However, what is still subject to restrictions is the location. Foreigners may only purchase property in certain areas.

Now rest assured, this doesn’t mean that non-Emiratis get the slice of the cake that is not as nice. The selected locations are very attractive, as shown in the example of The Palm. The man-made island has now become a home from home for many celebrities. And Dubai Marina, Arabian Ranches, or Emirates Hills are also exclusive places where life is excellent.

To avoid any nasty surprises, you should only trust brokers registered with the RERA (Real Estate Regulatory Authority).

Anyone going for a property receives the Title Deed (similar to an entry in the land register) after the purchase and payment in full. The acquisition process is fairly straightforward; a simple handwritten purchase contract is sufficient – and binding. Another benefit is that you can apply for a residence permit after purchasing but this doesn’t entitle you to a work permit.

PROPERTY LAW IN ABU DHABI Anyone who is a resident in a Member State of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) may purchase property in the investment zones. Other foreigners, however, only have the option of buying apartments; they are not allowed to purchase land. However, those interested in a villa or an office building in the largest Emirate can purchase a 99-year leasehold, which covers both the property and the land.

TAX BENEFITS? The UAE is a tax haven; there is among other things no property tax, local rates, residential tax, inheritance tax, capital gains tax or stamp duty. However, for foreign property owners this does not mean that their income from immovable property is exempt from tax. How this is handled exactly always depends on the country of origin. In Germany, for example, tax must be paid on this revenue.

This excludes independent subsidiaries of a German-based company under the Foreign Tax Relations Act. Their profits are not subject to German taxation.

The United Arab Emirates have learned from the building boom disaster of 2009.

The property sector is now aiming for growth with caution and prudence. This makes the UAE more attractive than ever for anyone looking for some time out under a blue sky or a return on investment.

There are some events, like the unveiling of Chanel’s pre-fall and resort collection, that call for an absolutely superb setting. What city could better fulfil this requirement than Dubai? In a specially erected building with Arabian flair and the double-C logo, the dream destination in the United Arab Emirates provided the perfect backdrop for Chanel’s Croisière Show 2014/15. On the private island simply called The Island, the illustrious guests experienced a collection full of luminance.

The likes of Tilda Swinton, Freida Pinto and Vanessa Paradis were transferred to the man-made private island in traditional Arab boats. Awaiting them was an enchanting setting: lights, mosaics, candlelight and in the background the spectacular skyline of Dubai. Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion vision of a union of Orient and Occident is both innovative and ingenious. “It’s my perception of an idealised Orient, albeit an Orient for all. Totally without any folklore. The influences are many and varied, including the world of fairy tales, the movies, the paintings of Delacroix and the creations of Paul Poiret from 1914“, explains the designer.

MODERN ORIENTAL PRINCESSES A wide-sleeved bolero embroidered with tiny sequins, fitted tweed combi-shorts and bloomers made of golden silk lurex.

That’s how Chanel sees modern oriental princesses. Coat dresses or tunics are worn with either bloomers or skinny trousers, which thus define a whole new silhouette – sometimes androgynous, sometimes feminine. The collection is a daring firework of colours, a fairy-tale interpretation of the mosaics typical of the Orient. In the evening the long dresses are adorned with sumptuous piping and glittering embroidery, from which it is possible to make out the skyline of Dubai with the outline of the Burj Khalifa. Ascot neck wraps add the finishing touch to the silk crêpe dresses with clear, strict lines.

Karl Lagerfeld underlines the typical Chanel colours of white, black, gold and beige with fuchsia, nocturnal blue and crimson. Lightweight tweed, silk muslins, linens, gold lamé, cotton voile and airy, sensual fabrics create an interplay of transparency and overlapping layers. Accessories such as canister-shaped pockets

made of gold, quilted leather or the tiaras adorned with a crescent are knowingly amusing and testimony to Karl Lagerfeld’s constantly evolving creativity.

“Dubai is tomorrow’s world,“ maintains Karl Lagerfeld. And thus, apart from a pair of items drawing stylishly on the 1960s and 70s, the latest Collection Croisière is also ultra-modern. Chanel and Dubai – without doubt a fashion liaison of superlative class: innovatively appealing, charmingly oriental and, of course, exceptionally glamorous.

Noch ist hier alles eine riesige Baustelle, doch auf der größten natürlichen Insel des Emirats soll in den nächsten Jahren das kulturelle Zentrum der arabischen Halbinsel entstehen. Der Startschuss für das Mammutprojekt erfolgte Anfang 2013. Stararchitekten wie Frank Gehry oder Sir Norman Foster werden jeweils eins von fünf Museen entwerfen und bauen. Initiator ist der mittlerweile verstorbene Scheich Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, der erste Präsident der Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate. Schon im nächsten Jahr soll das erste Museum, das Louvre Abu Dhabi eröffnen.

setzten da eher auf Sonne, Luxus und Shopping-Vergnügen. Doch vor ein paar Jahren änderte sich diese Einstellung. Auch kulturell wollen die Vereinigten Arabischen Emirate ihren Besuchern in Zukunft Außergewöhnliches bieten. So entstand die Idee, eine der zweihundert natürlichen Inseln an der Küste Abu Dhabis als Bauland zu nutzen. Das Megaprojekt Museumsinsel konnte starten. Futuristisch geprägte Bauvorhaben, gepaart mit Kunst der letzten Jahrzehnte, sollen hier am Persischen Golf eine einmalige Symbiose bilden.

Fünf Museen werden oder sollen in den nächsten Jahren realisiert werden.

Das Louvre Abu Dhabi soll bis Dezember 2015 fertiggestellt sein und als erstes Museum kulturell interessierte Besucher zu begeistern. Jean Nouvel will mit seinem beeindruckenden Projekt Geschichte schreiben und keine langweilige Kopie des Pariser Originals errichten. Der französische Architekt wird kein zentrales Gebäude bauen, sondern eine Microcity mit unterschiedlich großen Gebäudeteilen, die gemeinsam rund 7000 Tonnen auf die Waage bringen. Eine künstlerisch perforierte Kuppel wird dem Bauwerk mit effektvollen Lichtspielen den nötigen Glanz verleihen. Ein weiteres

Highlight, das sich Pritzker-Preisträger Nouvel ausgedacht hat: Pittoreske Wasserläufe werden das Museum durchziehen. Ein charmantes Leitmotiv, das an die Bewässerungssysteme arabischer Bauern erinnert. 2016 soll das von Sir Norman Foster geplante Zayed National Museum fertiggestellt sein. Und bereits ein Jahr später, so die Pläne, wird Frank Gehry das Guggenheim Museum, geplant als Gebäude aus trichterförmigen Kegeln und Würfeln, eröffnen. Wichtiger Aspekt: Das Museum soll im stetigen Austausch mit der Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation stehen. Die 1937 gegründete Stiftung wird eine Art Kontrollfunktion übernehmen und die Kunstgegenstände genau begutachten, die im Guggenheim Abu Dhabi ausgestellt werden. Deshalb wird das Zayed National Museum auch alle anderen Bauten auf der Insel überragen. Stararchitekt Norman Foster hat sich dem Scheich zu Ehren für eine majestätische Dachkonstruktion entschieden. Sie soll an dessen Lieblingsvogel Scheichs erinnern: den Falken. Mit aufgefalteten Flügelspitzen wird er ein wahrlich königlich anmutendes Bild bieten.

Thus the mega Saadiyat Cultural District project was launched. Futuristic buildings in combination with the art of the last few decades are to form a unique symbiosis here, on the Persian Gulf.

FIvE wORLD-RENOwNED ARCHITECTS DESIGN FIvE MUSEUMS by 2008 the billion-dollar plans for the Saadiyat Cultural District off Abu Dhabi were already lying completed in the drawers of the respective architects.

However, it was not until January 2013 that ground was broken on the ambitious construction project. Five museums are set to be realised in the next few years. The Louvre Abu Dhabi is due to be completed

by December 2015, the first of the museums to delight visitors with an interest in culture. Jean Nouvel aims to make history with his impressive project, which will not merely be a boring copy of the Parisian original. The French architect is not building a central building, but rather a microcity with structures of various sizes, together weighing around 7,000 tonnes.

An artistically-perforated dome will lend the structure the necessary radiance, with the light creating a range of effects. A further highlight that Pritzker Prize-winner Nouvel has come up with is picturesque waterways permeating the building. A charming symbol, reminiscent of the irrigation systems of Arab farmers. 2016 should see the completion of the Zayed National Museum, planned by Sir Norman Foster.

And one year later Frank Gehry will open the Guggenheim Museum, planned as a structure of funnel-shaped towers and cubes. An important aspect of this: the museum will interact with the Solomon

Saadiyat Cultural District

R. Guggenheim Foundation. Established in 1937, the foundation will exercise a kind of controlling function, carefully examining the art works that are to be exhibited at the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. The aim is to display art that has been created in the period from the 1960s to the present day.

It is not yet clear when acclaimed architect Zaha Hadid will erect and open her Center of Performing Arts, nor when the go-ahead will be given for the Maritime Museum, the last of the five giant projects.

ONE MUSEUM wILL FORM THE CULTURAL HEART OF AbU DHAbI The centre of the Saadiyat Cultural District will be the Zayed National Museum. This will primarily recount the life story of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who died in 2004, after having initiated the founding of the UAE and moulding the destiny of the region like scarcely any other. Gardens like the ones the sheikh loved are being laid out, with plants that he treasured. Key moments in the life of the sheikh will consequently receive an artistic interpretation. The first national museum of the United Arab Emirates will not only be dedicated to the life of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, but also to the history of the nation and the Gulf region as a whole. As a result, the Zayed National Museum will also tower above all other structures on the island. Star architect Norman Foster has decided on a majestic roof construction in honour of the sheikh.

This is intended to evoke the favourite bird of the ruler: the falcon. with outspread wings, it will present a truly royal image.

In the past decades, culture was not the focus of attention when it came to attracting tourists to the Emirates. The Emiratis concentrated more on the aspects of sun, luxury and shopping enjoyment. However, a few years ago this attitude changed. In the future, the United Arab Emirates also aims to offer its visitors unusual cultural attractions. The idea arose of using one of the two hundred natural islands off the coast of Abu Dhabi as a construction site.

Etwa 160 Kilometer von AbuDhabi-Stadt entfernt, soll das Ausnahme-Projekt The Mastaba entstehen.

Eine Herausforderung, selbst für Christo.

Der geniale Amerikaner hat unter anderem die Florida Keys und den Berliner Reichstag auf spektakuläre Weise künstlerisch verpackt. Doch diesmal wird nichts ver- und dann wieder entpackt. Das Wüsten-Kunstwerk wird nicht vergänglich sein. Es soll Wind, Wetter, Sand und Zeit trotzen − und für die Ewigkeit Bestand haben.

2686 v. Chr.) war die Mastaba, die mit ihrer Form an einen Schemel erinnert, ein königlicher Grabbau. Im Laufe der folgenden Dynastien wurden die Mastabas von den Pyramiden als Grabmäler abgelöst. Christos Mastaba wird ebenfalls ein Prisma mit trapezförmigen Seitenflächen sein, allerdings mit anderen Dimensionen: Mit einer Grundfläche von 225 x 300 Metern und einer Höhe von 150 Metern wird das „achte Weltwunder“ größer als die Pyramide von Gizeh sein. Das Projekt ist nicht neu. Bereits 1977 hatte Christo gemeinsam mit seiner 2009 verstorbenen Ehefrau Jeanne-Claude die Vision von The Mastaba. Skizzen belegen den langen Reifungsprozess der AusnahmeSkulptur. Fakt ist, dass bis heute kein künstlerisch drapiertes Ölfass in der Wüste steht. Aber: Die Planung und die Zusammenarbeit mit der königlichen Familie von Abu Dhabi nahmen vor allem in den letzten beiden Jahren konkrete Formen an. Der Bau des

DIE VISION NIMMT GESTALT AN Mit der Veröffentlichung von Details hält sich Christo zurück. Seit dem Erscheinen des Bildbandes The Mastaba, Project for Abu Dhabi im Jahr 2012 und einem Christo-Interview mit der englischen Zeitung The Observer ist man jedoch etwas schlauer. So weiß man, dass das gigantische Kunstwerk in der Nähe der Oase Liwa entstehen soll.

Innen wird die Skulptur hohl und der obere Teil begehbar sein. Schaut man sich Christos Pläne an, drängen sich (mindestens) zwei Fragen auf: Wie soll das 150 Meter hohe Kunstwerk Bestand haben, wenn es immer wieder heftigsten Sandstürmen ausgesetzt ist?

Und: Wie können korrodierende Fässer ausgetauscht werden, ohne die Skulptur zu beschädigen? Diese Fragen stellten sich 2007 wohl auch der Künstler und seine Frau Jeanne-Claude, als sie gleich vier Forschungsinstitute damit beauftragten, Lösungen für eventuelle technische Probleme und Widrigkeiten zu finden. Inzwischen liegt die MastabaStudie bei Professor Dr. sc. techn. Mike Schlaich und seinem Team. Schlaich lehrt an der TU Berlin im Fachgebiet „Entwerfen und Konstruieren – Massivbau“. Ganz nebenbei entwickelt er jetzt auch noch eine tragfähige Raumfachwerk-Struktur für The Mastaba.

TOURISTENATTRAKTION IN DER WÜSTE Rund 30 Monate sollen die Bauarbeiten für das Wüsten-Kunstwerk dauern. Die Kosten werden wohl ebenso gigantisch sein wie die Skulptur. Der Künstler geht von etwa 350 Millionen Dollar aus.

Um sich seine Unabhängigkeit zu bewahren, möchte er das Projekt selbst finanzieren. Dennoch zahlt auch Christo solch eine immense Summe nicht aus der Portokasse. Laut Businessplan soll die Finanzierung schon stehen: Besucher werden für die Besichtigung der großräumig eingezäunten MegaSkulptur bezahlen müssen. Ein noch zu bauendes Hotel und Restaurant in der Nähe sollen die kunstinteressierten Touristen beherbergen und für zusätzliche Einnahmen sorgen. Mit derlei Maßnahmen soll kein Profit gemacht, sondern nur die Entstehung und Bewahrung des Kunstwerks gesichert werden. Um den schnöden Mammon geht es dem Künstler, der 2014 mit dem Theodor-Heuss-Preis ausgezeichnet wurde, nicht. „Wir machen nur Arbeiten aus Freude und Schönheit“, begeistert sich Christo leidenschaftlich.

Man glaubt ihm das gerne.

ver 400,000 coloured oil barrels piled up to form a monumental work of art, surrounded only by desert sand. Around 160 kilometres away from Abu Dhabi city is the planned location for the exceptional ‘The Mastaba’ project. A challenge even for Christo.

The ingenious American’s past projects have included artistically wrapping up the Florida Keys and Berlin’s Reichstag in spectacular fashion. This time, however, nothing is being wrapped up and then unwrapped again. This piece of desert art is not going to be transient.

The intention is that it will defy wind, weather, sand and time − and remain in existence for eternity.

‘The eighth WONDER of the world’ The dimensions: gigantic.

The vision: revolutionary. Nothing about this project is trivial.

Plans are afoot to create a work of art for eternity in the desert of Abu Dhabi. With his mega sculpture ‘The Mastaba’, wrapping artist Christo aims to create nothing less than the

BIGGER THAN THE PYRAMID OF GIZA ‘Bench’, that’s the simple translation of the Arabic word ‘mastaba’. In early dynastic Egypt (3100 – 2686 BC) the mastaba, which in its shape is remi-

niscent of a footstool, was a structure for the burial of kings and emperors.

Over the course of the subsequent dynasties, the mastabas were superseded as tombs by the pyramids. Christo’s ‘Mastaba’ will also be a prism with trapezoid sides, albeit of quite different dimensions: with a footprint of 225 x 300 metres and a height of 150 metres, the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ will be bigger than the Pyramid of Giza. The project is not new. Along with his wife Jeanne-Claude, who died in 2009, Christo first had the vision of ‘The Mastaba’ way back in 1977. Sketches bear testimony to the exceptional sculpture’s long process of gestation. However, the fact is that to date not one artistically draped oil barrel is yet standing in the desert.

But: the planning and collaboration with the Abu Dhabi royal family has been taking firm shape over the last couple of years in particular. This gigantic work of art is due to be constructed in the near future with the support of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al-Nayhan, the brother of the crown prince.

THE VISION TAKES SHAPE Christo has been reticent about publishing any details. However, since the appearance in 2012 of an illustrated book entitled ‘The Mastaba, Project for Abu Dhabi’ and an interview that Christo gave to the English Observer newspaper, we are somewhat the wiser.

We now know, for instance, that the plan is to create the gigantic work of art near to the Liwa oasis. Inside the sculpture will be hollow and the top section will be accessible on foot. When you look at Christo’s plans, there are (at least) two pressing questions: how is the 150metre high work of art supposed to last forever, if it is repeatedly subjected to extreme sand storms? And: how can corroding barrels be replaced without damaging the sculpture? These are ques-

tions that the artist and his wife JeanneClaude were probably asking themselves in 2007, when they commissioned no less than four research institutes with finding solutions for potential technical problems and difficulties. Currently the Mastaba research is in the hands of Professor Mike Schlaich and his team.

Schlaich teaches ‘Solid Structure Design’ at Berlin Technical University. Very much as a side-line he is now also developing a load-bearing spatial framework structure for The Mastaba.

TOURIST ATTRACTION IN THE DESERT Construction of the desert work of art is expected to take around 30 months.

The cost will probably be just as gigantic as the sculpture. The artist is estimating about $350 million. In order to retain his independence, he wants to finance the project himself. However, even Christo cannot pay such an immense sum out of petty cash.

According to the business plan, the funding model is already in place: visitors will have to pay to view the mega structure, which will be fenced off around a wide area. A nearby hotel and restaurant, which are yet to be built, are intended to accommodate tourists with an interest in art and provide additional income. The plan is not that such measures will make a profit, but merely ensure the creation and preservation of the artwork. For the artist, who was awarded the Theodor Heuss Prize in 2014, it’s not about the filthy lucre. “We only do works of joy and beauty,“ enthuses Christo passionately.

One gladly believes him.

Wie kommt ein Kölner auf die Idee, in Dubai Schokolade aus Kamelmilch herzustellen?

Martin van Almsick: Als langjähriger Angestellter des Kölner Schokoladenmuseums war ich schon immer ein ausgewiesener Schokoladenliebhaber. Schokolade aus Kamelmilch war da eine neue Herausforderung, der wir uns mit einem Team von Schoko-experten gerne gestellt haben. es hieß eigentlich immer, dass Kamelmilch zu fettarm für Schokoladenproduktion sei.

Das machte die Aufgabe noch reizvoller.

Rückblickend hört sich die entwicklung von der ursprünglichen idee zur fertigen Schokolade immer sehr locker-flockig an, jedoch hat es vom ersten Geistesblitz bis zu der Produkteinführung auf den Markt vier Jahre gedauert.

Welche anfänglichen Schwierigkeiten mussten Sie bewältigen?

Martin van Almsick: Unsere größte Herausforderung war es, die Barriere im Kopf der großen potentiellen Retail-Partner zu überwinden. Kamelmilch ist halt kein alltägliches Produkt und gar manch einer konnte sich eine Premiumschokolade aus dieser Milch gar nicht vorstellen. interessanterweise hatten die Konsumenten eine weitaus geringere Hemmschwelle – unser Produkt wurde auf dem Markt mit offenen Armen empfangen. Wir hatten das große Plus, dass die Regierung von Dubai bereits eine Vision zur kommerziellen Nutzung von Kamelmilch hatte. es gab bereits Bestrebun-

gen in Dubai, Kamelmilch in verschiedenster form auf den Markt zu bringen und auch ein bereits kommerziell laufendes farmprojekt, das uns Kamelmilch in der für PremiumSchokolade nötigen Qualität liefern konnte.

Wir waren also zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort. Seit wie vielen Jahren sind Sie jetzt am Persischen Golf, und was haben Sie schon alles auf Ihrer To-do-Liste abgehakt?

Wie schmeckt eigentlich Kamelschokolade?

Martin van Almsick: Kamelmilch ist einen Tick salziger als Kuhmilch, was unserer Schokolade den charakteristischen Hausgeschmack gibt – nicht zu süß, cremig, mit einem Hauch von Karamell und Honig und eine leicht salzige Note im Abgang. Zergeht auf der Zunge und hinterlässt eine angenehme Weichheit.

Kamelmilch soll ja sehr gesund sein…

Martin van Almsick: Al Nassma feiert in diesem Jahr sechsjähriges Jubiläum und wir sind sehr stolz auf das, was wir mit verhältnismäßig bescheidenen Mitteln aufgebaut haben. Angefangen haben wir mit zwei Mitarbeitern – mit mir und meiner frau – und unser Team ist in der Zwischenzeit auf 20 Mitarbeiter angewachsen. Auch im Verkauf sehen wir ein rapides Wachstum. Als firma ist und war es unser Ziel, ein einzigartiges und qualitativ hochwertiges Produkt aus Dubai in alle Welt zu bringen. Mittlerweile sind wir im ganzen arabischen Raum stark vertreten und haben auch den Schritt nach Asien, europa und in die USA geschafft.

Was wollen Sie noch erreichen?

Martin van Almsick: Wir hatten sehr erfolgreiche einstiegsjahren, aber es gibt natürlich immer Raum für Wachstum und Weiterentwicklung. Neue Produkte, neue Märkte, da sehe ich in der Zukunft noch viele Möglichkeiten die Marke Al nassma weiterzuentwickeln.

Martin van Almsick: Kamelmilch ist außerordentlich gesund und hat einige Vorteile gegenüber der Kuhmilch. Sie enthält bis zu 50 Prozent weniger fett und drei bis fünfmal so viel Vitamin C. Die enthaltenen fettsäuren sind ungesättigt, was die Milch leicht verträglich macht. es gibt keine bekannten Allergien gegen Kamelmilch, was sie natürlich für Kuhmilchallergiker interessant macht.

Alles in allem ist Kamelmilch eine sehr gesunde Alternative zu Kuhmilch, auch dadurch, dass es noch keine Hormonbehandlung in der Kamelmilchproduktion gibt. es ist ein sehr natürliches und reines Produkt.

Sie haben nicht nur arabische Kunden, Ihr Produkt wird ja auch exportiert.

Martin van Almsick: Wir haben bereits sehr früh mit dem export begonnen. Nur kurz nach unserem Start in 2008 begannen wir eine Kooperation mit UPS in 2009, um auch an Kunden außerhalb der VAe liefen zu können. Seither wächst unser export stetig

und wir erobern immer neue Märkte. Unsere Schokolade kommt dabei sehr gut an, da sie nicht nur ein exklusives, sondern auch ein qualitativ überzeugendes Produkt ist. insbesondere als Geschenk und Mitbringsel ist unsere Schokolade mittlerweile nicht nur im arabischen Raum überaus beliebt.

Was kostet die Schokolade aus Kamelmilch, und wer ist Ihr größter Abnehmer?

Martin van Almsick: Unsere Tafelware verkaufen wir zu einem Preis von um die 6 euro. Unsere Schokolade findet zurzeit den größten Absatz in den Duty-free-Läden im arabischen Raum. Duty free bietet uns die einmalige Gelegenheit, global zu expandieren und gleichermaßen bieten wir den großen Reise-einzelhandelsgesellschaften ein originelles und weitgehend exklusives Produkt an, welches das Süßwarenangebot der Branche positiv beeinflusst und auf lange Sicht auch spannender macht. einen großen Schritt in diese Richtung haben wir kürzlich mit unserer Partnerschaft mit Gebrüder Heinemann, einem der größten global agierenden Reise-einzelhandelsgesellschaften, unternommen.

Durch diese Kooperation bekommen wir Zugang zu einigen der größten Duty frees der Welt. So sind wir jetzt auch an den internationalen flughäfen von Wien und istanbul erhältlich. Aber auch außerhalb der flughäfen erweitern wir stetig unsere erhältlichkeit. So sind wir mittlerweile in europa sowohl bei Julius Meinl am Graben in Wien und Prag als auch bei Selfridges in London vertreten.

Wie sieht Ihr Arbeitstag aus?

Martin van Almsick: Mein Alltag zeichnet sich dadurch aus, dass es eigentlich keinen gibt. Zumindest keinen geregelten. es gibt eigentlich immer viel zu tun. Da ist viel Spontaneität gefragt.

Sie haben eine Frau und drei Kinder – hat sich Ihre Familie in der arabischen Welt eingelebt?

Martin van Almsick: Wir haben uns hier in Dubai sehr schnell eingelebt. Dazu muss man sagen, dass wir schon immer eine sehr flexible und abenteuerlustige familie waren, von daher viel uns der Wechsel von Köln nach Dubai recht leicht. Hinzu kommt, dass Dubai gerade für Rheinländer ein sehr vertrautes fleckchen erde ist. Die hiesige Mentalität hat durchaus einiges mit der kölschen Lebensart gemeinsam, wie beispielsweise ‘et is wie et is, et kuett wie et kuett un et haett noch immer joot jejange’…

Dies ist auch in Dubai eine durchaus gebräuchliche Lebenseinstellung. Jedoch muss ich schon sagen, dass es die Anfänge im Bereich der Arbeit schon in sich hatten. Lange Arbeitszeiten und viel persönliches engagement waren dabei entscheidend.

14-Stunden-Tage waren damals und sind auch heute keine Seltenheit. Zuhause denken immer alle, wir würden in Dubai Urlaub machen.

Was lieben und schätzen Sie an den Emiraten besonders?

Martin van Almsick: Wie gesagt, die Umstellung von Köln nach Dubai war nicht so schwierig wie erwartet, und wir haben uns hier als familie gleich wohl gefühlt. Was ich hier sehr schätze sind die zwischenmenschlichen Kontakte. Viele Dinge basieren auf persönlichen Gesprächen, und familie wird sehr groß geschrieben. Das schafft ein angenehmes Lebens- und Arbeitsklima. Die emirate sind ein friedliches, stabiles, dynamisches und multi-ethnisches Land. es ist immer alles in Bewegung, und das macht es sehr spannend, hier zu leben. Alle reden von Globalisierung und davon, flexibel sein zu müssen. in Dubai gehört das zum Lebensgefühl.

Fehlt Ihnen Köln?

Martin van Almsick: Köln ist und bleibt meine Heimat. Als Kölner hat man doch immer ein klein wenig Heimweh. es sind eigentlich die kleinen Dinge des Lebens, die ich manchmal vermisse. Karneval beispielsweise. Und ich würde auch gerne mal wieder zu einem Heimspiel des 1. fC Köln gehen oder auch einen der schönen langen Sommerabende in der Kölner Altstadt genießen.

Wie sehen Ihre Zukunftspläne aus – beruflich und privat?

Martin van Almsick: es bleibt eigentlich immer spannend, und wir haben als firma noch viele Pläne. Als erstes steht für uns natürlich die expo 2020 an. Als lokale firma mit einem original-VAe Premium-Produkt passen wir perfekt in das Thema. Des Weiteren ist und bleibt es natürlich auch unser Ziel, die Marke Al nassma weiter auszubauen und auch global auf Dauer zu etablieren. interview: Ulf Jacks

fter more than a decade working

as Head of Marketing & Public Relations at the Cologne-based Imhoff Stollwerck chocolate museum, Martin van Almsick now runs a successful start-up company, Al Nassma Chocolate LLC – the world’s first camel milk chocolate company based in Dubai.

vitamin C. The fatty acids that it contains are unsaturated, which makes the milk highly compatible with the human digestive system. There are no known allergies to camel’s milk, which naturally makes it interesting for people who have an allergy to cow’s milk. All in all, camel’s milk is a very healthy alternative to cow’s milk, including due to the fact that to date there is no hormone treatment in its production. It is a very natural and pure product.

You have not only Arab clients, I understand. Your product is also being exported, isn’t it?

makes it more exciting. We recently took a major step in this direction with our partnership with Gebr. Heinemann, one of the largest travel retail companies operating on a global basis. Through this cooperation we gain access to some of the world’s largest duty-free shops. We are thus now also available at the international airports of Vienna and Istanbul. We are also constantly broadening our availability outside of airports as well. We are, for example, now represented in Europe both at ‘Julius Meinl am Graben’ in Vienna and Prague and at Selfridges in London.

What does your working day look like?

How did somebody from Cologne come up with the idea of making chocolate from camel’s milk in Dubai?

Martin van Almsick: Having worked for many years at the Cologne Chocolate Museum, I had always been a declared lover of chocolate. Making chocolate from camel’s milk was a new challenge that we happily set ourselves there with a team of chocolate experts. It was actually always said that camel’s milk was too low in fat for chocolate production. That made the task even more enticing. Looking back, the process of development from the original idea to the finished chocolate always sounds very quick and easy, but in fact from the first brain wave to launching the product on the market took four years.

What initial difficulties did you have to overcome?

Martin van Almsick: Our greatest challenge was overcoming the mental barrier in the minds of our large potential retail partners.

Camel’s milk is not an everyday product and many of them simply couldn’t imagine a premium chocolate made of it. Interestingly,

consumers had far fewer inhibitions and out in the marketplace our product was received with open arms. We had the major advantage that the government of Dubai already had a vision for the commercial utilisation of camel’s milk. Efforts were already being made in Dubai to bring camel’s milk onto the market in all sorts of different ways and there was also already a farm project being commercially run that was able to supply us with camel’s milk of the quality required for premium chocolate. So we were in the right place at the right time.

How many years have you now been in the Gulf and what have you already ticked off on your to-do list?

Martin van Almsick: Al nassma is celebrating its sixth anniversary this year and we are very proud of what we have built up with relatively modest means. We started out with two employees – me and my wife – and our team has now grown to 20 members of staff. We are seeing rapid growth in sales, too. As a company it is and was our goal to offer a unique, high-quality product from Dubai all over the world. We now have strong representation throughout

the Arab region and have also taken the first step towards Asia, Europe and the USA. What do you still want to achieve?

Martin van Almsick: Our early years were very successful, but there is, of course, always room for growth and further development. Going forward, I see many opportunities to develop the Al nassma brand further with new products and new markets.

What does camel’s milk actually taste like?

Martin van Almsick: Camel’s milk is a touch saltier than cow’s milk. That gives our chocolate its characteristic trademark taste – not too sweet, creamy, with a hint of caramel and honey and a slightly salty final note. It melts on the tongue and leaves a pleasant softness.

Camel’s milk is also said to be healthy...

Martin van Almsick: It’s exceptionally healthy and has several advantages compared to cow’s milk. It contains up to 50 per cent less fat and three to five times as much

Martin van Almsick: Yes, we started exporting from a very early stage. Shortly after our launch in 2008, we began a collaboration with UPS in 2009 in order to be able to supply customers outside of the UAE as well. Since then our export operation has been constantly growing and we continue to enter new markets. Our chocolate is being very well received, as it is not only an exclusive product, but is impressive in terms of its quality as well. Our chocolate is now very popular especially as a gift or souvenir both in the Arab region and elsewhere.

What does chocolate made of camel’s milk cost and who are the main customers?

Martin van Almsick: Our bars sell for a price in the region of €6. The greatest sales of our chocolate currently come from the duty-free shops in the Arab region. Duty free offers us the unique opportunity to expand on a global scale, while in turn offering the large travel retail companies an original, largely exclusive product, which has a positive influence on the sector’s range of confectionery and over the long-term

Martin van Almsick: The main feature of my working day is that I don’t actually have one. At least not a regular one. There is always a lot to do. It requires a lot of spontaneity.

You have a wife and three children – has your family settled in the Arab world?

Martin van Almsick: We settled in here in Dubai very quickly. It has to be said, too, that we’ve always been a very flexible, adventurous family, so we found the change from Cologne to Dubai very easy. On top of that comes the fact that, for Rhineland folk in particular, Dubai feels a lot like home. The mentality here certainly has a lot in common with the way of life in Cologne. This ‘what will be, will be’ and ‘somehow things will turn out fine’ attitude is certainly a common mindset in Dubai as well. However, I must say that the early days on the work front were very demanding. What was key there was long working hours and lots of dedication. 14-hour days were not rare back then and still aren’t now. Everyone back home always thinks we’re out here in Dubai having a holiday!

What do you especially like and value about the Emirates?

Martin van Almsick: As I said, adjusting from Cologne to Dubai was not as difficult as expected and as a family we immediately felt at home here. What I very much appreciate here are the interpersonal contacts.

Lots of things here are based on face-to-face conversations and family is given a high priority. That creates a pleasant living and working environment. The Emirates are a peaceful, stable, dynamic and multi-ethnic country. Everything is always on the go, which makes it very exciting to live here.

Everyone talks about globalisation and needing to be flexible. In Dubai that’s part and parcel of the feel for life.

Do you miss Cologne?

Martin van Almsick: Cologne is and remains my home. Coming from there, you always have a little bit of a yearning for the city. It’s actually life’s little things that I sometimes miss. Carnival, for example.

And I’d also like one day to go to an FC Cologne home game again or to enjoy one of those lovely long summer evenings in Cologne’s old town.

What are your plans for the future – professionally and personally?

Martin van Almsick: Things continue to be exciting, actually, and as a company we’ve still got lots of plans. First of all, of course, we’ve got Expo 2020 coming up. As a local company with an original UAE premium product, we fit perfectly into the concept.

Beyond that, it is also still our goal to further develop the Al nassma brand and to get it firmly established globally as well.

Unter den strengen augen der schahs, die die Polospiele von ihrem Balkon im ali-Qapu-Palast beobachteten, kämpften die Pferdesportler auf dem zentralen Platz, der damaligen hauptstadt isfahan. Überlieferungen aus dieser zeit zeigen, dass Polo bei männern und Frauen gleichermaßen beliebt war, sogar gemeinsam gespielt wurde. nach indien und arabien kam die sportart durch die islamische expansion. Großbritannien ist mutterland des Polo-sports, wie wir ihn heute kennen. durch britische Offiziere, die auf dem asiatischen subkontinent stationiert waren und Polo als Training für den Berufsalltag sahen, gelangte das spiel schließlich nach england. 1859 wurde dort der erste Polo-Club gegründet. in den zwanziger Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts musste Großbritannien seine Position als Polo-Großmacht an argentinien abgeben. heute kommen die besten spieler der Welt meist aus südamerika. Kein anderes land hat so viele +10 handicap sportler, die um die begehrten Polo-Pokale rund um den Globus kämpfen wie argentinien.

is Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum made the sport of kings socially acceptable in the United Arab Emirates. In 1996 the enthusiastic equestrian founded UAEHorseRiding, a polo school that has now achieved worldwide recognition. However, this was not enough for the ambitious Emir of Dubai, Prime Minister and Vice President of the UAE. In 2010 the city on the Persian Gulf acquired its own prestigious tournament.

The patron of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup is currently the son of the sheikh and deputy ruler of the emirate, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The polo event, now the fourth most important in the world, is held every spring and since 2013 women have also had their own top tournament in Dubai, at the Desert Palm Polo Club.

THE CRADLE of PoLo The origins of this equestrian sport can be found in around 600 BC in the Persian empire. People loved this game, the popularity of which grew continuously, even becoming the national sport in the 16th century. Under the stern gaze of the shahs, who watched the polo matches from the balcony of the Ali Qapu palace, the riders contested games on the central square of the then-capital Isfahan.

Accounts from this time indicate that polo was equally popular with men and women, and that they even played it together. The sport found its way to India and Arabia as a result of the Islamic expansion. Great Britain is the motherland of polo as it is played today. British officers stationed on the Indian subcontinent used polo as a form of training and the game made its way to Britain, where the first polo club was founded in 1859. In the 1920s Great Britain had to relinquish its position as polo superpower to Argentina. Today, the best players in the world mostly come from South America. No other country has as many +10-handicap players contesting coveted trophies around the world as Argentina.

DUBAI PoLo ToURNAMENT CELEBRATES fIfTH BIRTHDAy The rise of the Dubai Polo Gold Cup in the last five years has been as breathtaking and meteoric as that of the emirate itself.

The tournament has left many venerable events that have been contested far longer in its wake as far as international significance is concerned. The tourna-

ment now occupies fourth place in the worldwide polo rankings. only the tournaments in Argentina, the USA and Great Britain have a higher standing than the annual polo highlight in the Persian Gulf. for the fifth edition in 2014 the patron, His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, presented a record field of competitors, comprising ten first-class teams. The Dubai Polo Gold Cup Series has rapidly established itself on the world stage of equestrian sport and is now the highest handicap tournament (+16) in the Middle East. This year the polo matches, the organisation of the event and the hospitality of the city should be an advertisement for the Expo 2020 in Dubai. This is not just of great importance to the ruling family.

DECEMBER PREMIERE foR LADIES’ PoLo The first ladies’ polo tournament in the United Arab Emirates took place from 10 – 13 December 2013 at the Desert Palm Polo Club in Dubai. The host team and two teams from Europe and one team from the USA contested the first official ladies’ polo title in the Persian Gulf. Patron and participant with her Arab team was Her Highness Sheikha Maitha Bint Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, daughter of the Emir of Dubai. one of the best German female polo players was also present in the orient (team Europa 1), Anna oettingen-Wallerstein: “I immediately accepted when they invited me. There is no way I wanted to miss out on playing at this unique event in Ali Albwardy’s wonderful Desert Palm venue. This is a historic moment, joining forces with HH Sheikha Maitha and promoting ladies’ polo in the process.“ In the final the two polo players faced each other as opponents. The German quickly realised that the hosts were there to win it, which they did, with a welldeserved 6:1.5 victory. After the award ceremony Her Highness Sheikha Maitha Bint Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum thanked the main sponsor: “The Ralph Lauren International Ladies’ Polo Tournament is of great significance to the United Arab Emirates and for women throughout the region. anz entspannt ziehe ich meine Bahnen im funkelnden Pool des Gran Meliá Rome, umgeben von einem grünen Paradies mit blühenden orangenbäumen. nach einem ebenso anstrengenden wie auch wunderschönen Sightseeing-Tag in der ewigen Stadt ist dieses fleckchen erde eine himmlische oase.

Meine Aussicht ist wohl einzigartig: ich blicke auf den Vatikan und den Petersdom.

Beides in nur wenigen Minuten zu fuß erreichbar, so wie viele andere Attraktionen auch, beispielsweise die imposante engelsburg, das malerische Tiberufer,

Gäste mit ultimativem Luxus in der Ausstattung der 116 Zimmer, darunter spektakuläre Suiten mit 360-Grad-Blick auf Rom. Wohlfühlen auf unbeschwert luxuriöse Weise – ich bin begeistert. Was mich aber, abgesehen von Lage und Design des Refugiums, wirklich zum Schwärmen bringt, ist der exzellente Service mit Wow-faktor.

Mit einem freundlichen Lächeln und stets hilfsbereit weiß das Hotel-Team bereits Antworten auf fragen, die man noch gar nicht gestellt hat. So lasse ich mich gerne verwöhnen. Gäste, die eine Kategorie mit Red Level Service gebucht haben, kommen

zudem in den Genuss eines eigenen Butlers, eines privaten Check-ins und einer eigenen Lounge.

GeSCHiCHTSTRäCHTiGe LoCATion Zehn Jahre nahm die Verwandlung des ehemaligen Konvents aus dem 17. Jahrhundert in ein Luxushotel in Anspruch.

Während der Renovierungszeit stieß man auf archäologische Schätze aus dem 1. und 2. Jh. n. Chr. Bei den Grabungsarbeiten wurde auch das ehemalige Refugium der

Sightseeing in Rom. Das ist eine Lebensaufgabe. es ist einfach unmöglich, bella Roma innerhalb von ein paar Tagen zu entdecken. ich würdige die atemberaubende Schönheit der Tiber-Metropole, indem ich eben nicht von einer Sehenswürdigkeit zur nächste hetzen. ich genieße und schwelge.

So handhabe ich das in der Stadt – und im Hotel. Das Gran Meliá Rome ist wie geschaffen für sinnliches erleben. im 350 m² großen YHI-Spa mit fitnessbereich lässt man die Seele stilvoll bei Treatments, im Vitality Pool, im Dampfbad, in der Sauna oder in der Hydromassage-Wanne baumeln. Da Genießen und Schwelgen für mich untrennbar mit hervorragendem essen verbunden sind, führt mich mein Weg am ende eines ereignisreichen Tages ins Viva Voce. Das von Michelin-SterneKoch Alfonso iaccarino geführte Restaurant erfüllt meine erwartungen auf ganzer Linie. Das essen exquisit, und der Service, keine überraschung, exzellent. Den Digestif nehme ich am Pool, blicke auf die beleuchtete Kulisse des Vatikans. Mein letzter Tag in der ewigen Stadt und dem hinreißenden Gran Meliá Rome. Leider. Ach, dabei gibt es noch so viel zu entdecken und zu genießen. ein Dilemma? Keineswegs, ich komme einfach wieder...

otally relaxed, I swim a length or two of the sparkling pool in the Gran Meliá Rome, surrounded by a green paradise with blossoming orange trees.

After a both tiring and wonderful day of sightseeing in the Eternal City, this small corner of the earth is a heavenly oasis.

My view is probably unique: I’m looking out at the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basillica.

Both are just a few minutes’ walk away, as are many other attractions, such as the imposing Castel Sant’Angelo, the picturesque Tiber embankment, the charming Trastevere quarter and the baroque Piazza Navona.

CoMfoRT dEluxE It was only in April 2012 that the Spanish Meliá Hotels International chain opened this flagship of its luxury Gran Meliá brand.

Everything about this five-star establishment is excellent. The 10,000m² outdoor complex with pool and botanical garden in the heart of central Rome is in itself

unique. More a resort than a hotel, the Gran Meliá Rome enchants its guests with ultimate luxury in the 116 bedrooms, including a number of spectacular suites with 360-degree views over Rome. Here you feel wholly at ease in an unburdened, luxurious way – I’m very impressed. What, quite apart from the hotel’s location and design, really has me in raptures is, however, the excellent service, which has a genuine ‘wow factor’. With a friendly smile and always ready to help, the hotel team knows the answers to questions before you’ve even asked them. That’s a way in which I’m happy to be pampered.

Guests who have booked a category with Red level service, also get to enjoy having their own butler, a private check-in and their own lounge.

A loCATIoN STEEPEd IN HISToRY The transformation of the former 17th century convent into a luxury hotel took

ten years. during the renovation, workers came across archaeological treasures from the 1st and 2nd centuries Ad. In the course of the excavation they also discovered the former refuge of Agrippina, better known as the mother of Emperor Nero. In her honour a marble statue was erected in the stylish foyer. What I particularly like is that the Gran Meliá Rome succeeds in taking account of the listed building location without foregoing highly modern comfort. Bravissimo!

A RESIdENCE WITH GRANdEzzA It is not only visitors such as I, traditional city tourists, who find at the Gran Meliá Rome everything that the discerning traveller’s heart could desire. Business travellers, too, are pampered with 5-star luxury. Its conference area and business centre are geared up to running events and functions of every kind. dolCE VITA Sightseeing in Rome. That’s a lifelong task. It is simply impossible to discover all that bella Roma has to offer inside a couple of days. Indeed, I pay due respect to the awesome beauty of this city on the Tiber by not rushing from one tourist sight to the next. I savour and wallow.

Run by Michelin-star chef Alfonso laccarino, the restaurant totally fulfils my expectations.

The meal is exquisite and the service, unsurprisingly, excellent. I take my afterdinner drink next to the pool, looking at the illuminated backdrop of the Vatican.

My last day in the Eternal City and the enchanting Gran Meliá Rome. Sadly. And yet there is still so much to explore and enjoy. A dilemma? Not at all, I’ll simply come again...

From the track to the road The Maserati brothers certainly didn’t have to worry about fuel prices when they started their company Società Officine Alfieri Maserati in Bologna 1914. And back then, the 25-year old Alfieri Maserati could not have imagined that he would create a legendary car brand along with his brothers, Bindo, Ettore, Ernesto and Mario. Alfieri could turn his hand to anything; he was an excellent racer and a top-class designer with vision. It was certainly a major event for everyone when the first complete Maserati, the Tipo 26, was produced in 1926; a successful sports car that featured the trident logo on the grille for the first time. The distinctive trademark was designed by Mario Maserati, taking his inspiration from Neptune’s fountain in Bologna's Piazza del Nettuno. Rather untypically, the artist

of the family wasn’t particularly interested in cars, but he was into design. It was the start of a long success story with two wins at the Indianapolis 500, nine Formula 1 triumphs and victory at the Formula 1 World Championship in 1957. in stock, senkrecht in die erde gesteckt – und fertig ist die Ur-Uhr. Der stock wirft einen schatten, der mit dem sonnenstand wandert. anhand von Ziffern, die rund um den stab gruppiert sind, lassen sich die stunden ablesen.

Kein hightech, kein schickschnack. Gab es vor 3000 Jahren auch nicht, als die Babylonier die Zeit mit hilfe der sonnenuhr bestimmten. Doch was tun, wenn die sonne nicht scheint? auch darauf wussten die Babylonier eine antwort: die Wasseruhr. hier gab die Dauer, wie lange Wasser, unter Berücksichtigung des sich verändernden Drucks, von einem Behälter in den nächsten benötigt, das Zeitmaß vor.

Die Wasseruhrentechnik wurde von den alten Ägyptern und römern übernommen, jedoch in deutlich verfeinerter form.

WAS DIE NÄCHSTE STUNDE SCHLÄGT … im mittelalter machte ein anderes element den sonnen- und Wasseruhren Konkurrenz: das feuer. Genau genommen das feuer einer Kerze. mit einer Kerzenuhr war man in jedem haushalt unabhängig vom sonnenlicht, und sie war erschwinglich. Da eine Kerze, abhängig von ihrem Durchmesser, immer gleich schnell abbrennt, eignet sie sich hervorragend zur Zeitmessung.

Zu Beginn des 14. Jahrhunderts kam die sanduhr, das sogenannte stundenglas, in mode. mit der erfindung der mechanischen Uhr, der räderuhr, wurde die Zeitmessung schließlich revolutioniert.

wurden, gaben den Zeittakt vor. Wann genau das erste exemplar zum einsatz kam, ist nicht bekannt, man vermutet im 13. Jahrhundert. räderuhren gab es zunächst nur in Kirchen und rathäusern. sie waren groß und teuer, nur reiche Gemeinden konnten sie sich leisten. sie waren definitiv nicht für den privaten hausgebrauch geeignet. Das änderte sich mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts, als die ersten räderuhren mit federantrieb ausgerüstet wurden. so wurden die Uhren immer kleiner. es gab Tisch- und sogar Taschenuhren, die schnell zum fashion-must-have der feinen Gesellschaft avancierten.

MIT JEDEM JAHRHUNDERT GENAUER in den nächsten Jahrhunderten wurde die Uhr in vielfacher hinsicht modifiziert. im 16. und 17. Jahrhundert überschlugen sich die ereignisse in puncto Uhrenerfindungen: es wurde die Pendeluhr entwickelt, bei der ein mechanisches Pendel den Takt vorgibt. auch die Uhr mit spiralfeder und Unruh, eine art Gangregler, wurde mitte des 17. Jahrhunderts erfunden. in den 1720er Jahren folgte die harrison-Uhr, ausgestattet mit einer spiralfeder und gleichmäßigem aufzug, die mit nur einer sekunde abweichung pro monat bereits sehr exakt die Zeit angab.

stick, pushed vertically into the ground – and your ancient clock is finished. The stick casts a shadow, which moves with the path of the sun. Using numerals grouped around the stick it is possible to tell the time. No high-tech, no bells and whistles.

These were also absent 3,000 years ago, when the Babylonians told the time with the aid of a sundial. But what if the sun is not shining? The Babylonians also had an answer to this: the water clock. Here the time taken for water to pass from one vessel to another, taking account of the changing amount of pressure, was used to display the time. The water clock technique was adopted by the Ancient Egyptians and Romans, but in a considerably more refined form.

AT THE NEXT STROKE THE TIME WILL BE …

In the Middle Ages another element emerged to compete with the sun and water clocks: fire. The flame of a candle, to be precise. A candle clock brought independence from sunlight to every household – and it was affordable.

A candle, depending on its diameter, burns at the same speed all the time, making it ideal as a form of time measurement.

At the beginning of the 14th century the sand-filled hourglass made an appearance.

Time measurement was then revolutionised by the invention of the mechanical clock, the wheel clock. Cogs, powered by weights, set the pace. It is not known

exactly when the first of these clocks came into use, but it is assumed that it was in the 13th century. Wheel clocks were initially only used in churches and town halls. They were large and expensive, only rich parishes could afford them.

They were definitely not suitable for private household use. This changed in the mid 15th century, when the first wheel clocks were fitted with springs.

Clocks consequently became smaller and smaller. There were table clocks and even pocket watches, which soon became a fashion essential for high society.

MORE ACCURATE AS EACH CENTURY PASSED In the centuries that followed the clock was modified in many respects. In the 16th and 17th centuries events developed at breakneck pace as far as watch inventions were concerned: the pendulum clock was developed, with a mechanical pendulum providing the stroke. Clocks with overcoil balance spring and balance wheel, a type of regulator, were also invented in the mid 17th century. These were followed in the 1720s by the Harrison clock, equipped with an overcoil balance spring and even winding, which lost just one second per month. 1929 saw the arrival of the quartz clock and, in 1967, the most accurate clock to date: the atomic clock. The first wristwatch was invented at the beginning of the 19th century – but that is a tale to tell another time.

HORLOGERIE HISTORY heute sind armbanduhren für männer oft der einzige schmuck, den sie tragen und gutheißen. Das war nicht immer so. armbanduhren waren in ihren anfängen eine reine Damendomäne. als 1812 abraham Louis Breguet das erste exemplar fertigte, war es für eine Frau bestimmt. Caroline murat, Königin von neapel und die jüngste schwester von napoleon, war die auserkorene. Die herren zeigten sich wenig begeistert, war es ihnen doch zu weibisch, eine Uhr an einem armband zu tragen. sie blieben der Taschenuhr bis zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts treu. erst als man erkannte, dass Taschenuhren in bestimmten situationen unpraktisch sind, kam es zu einem Umdenken. so waren die ersten armbanduhrenträger mitglieder der deutschen Kriegsmarine, die bereits 1880 mit den praktischen Zeitmessern versorgt wurden. Louis Cartier entwarf 1904 die Cartier santos, eine Uhr für Piloten. Die Fliegeruhr war die erste mit Lederarmband. schließlich setzte sich die armbanduhr immer mehr durch, nicht nur beim militär. sie wurde zum täglichen Begleiter, schick und praktisch zugleich.

phasenanzeige, Zeitzonen und Chronograph (stoppuhrfunktion). aber es gibt weit mehr begehrte Komplikationen, beispielsweise ein Tourbillon. es wirkt den einflüssen der schwerkraft entgegen und sorgt so für besondere Genauigkeit. ein rattrapante, auch bekannt als schleppzeiger, ist ein zweiter sekundenzeiger bei einem Chronographen. Das repetitionsschlagwerk ist ein mechanisches Läutwerk, das die stunde, Viertelstunde oder sogar die minute mit einem Ton anschlägt. Vereint eine Uhr besonders viele Komplikationen, spricht man von Grande Complication. all diese raffinessen erfordern außerordentliches Geschick – und Geduld. es kann Wochen dauern, die winzigen Bauteile eines mechanischen Uhrwerks perfekt zusammenzusetzen.

Die technisch und handwerklich anspruchsvollen Kreationen haben ihren Preis. Besonders erlesene und komplizierte exemplare, vor allem wenn sie mit kostbaren materialien veredelt werden, können dem Wert eines Luxuswagens oder eigenheims entsprechen.

unbedingt die rentabelsten anlageobjekte. als anlage eignen sich nur rund 20 Prozent der Uhrenmodelle. Dann sind zehn Prozent Wertsteigerung pro Jahr möglich. anders sieht es aus, wenn man das Glück hat und einen gefragten mechanischen Klassiker einer schweizer edelmanufaktur sein eigen nennt, wie beispielsweise eine seltene Patek Philippe oder rolex. eine rolex Daytona ref 6263 von 1969 – das modell, das einst Paul newman trug – wurde 2013 für etwa 1,1 millionen Dollar versteigert. ende der 1980er konnte man die Uhr für nicht mal 1500 Dollar erwerben. Das ist eine Wertsteigerung, von der jeder sammler träumt.

Die haute horlogerie ist eigentlich eine Gegenbewegung zur sogenannten „Quarzkrise“. Bis ende der 1970er Jahre waren Quarzuhren der Verkaufsrenner. sie waren nicht nur sehr genau, sondern auch günstig und einfach zu produzieren. Genau das war der Knackpunkt. schnell fanden sich nachahmer in Fernost, die eifrig Billig-exemplare herstellten und den markt damit überschwemmten.

Die existenz vieler schweizer Uhrenmanufakturen stand auf dem spiel. Überraschenderweise folgte auf das Tief ein unglaubliches hoch, das bis heute anhält. Die mechanische Uhr feierte ihre renaissance und vor allem die schweizer manufakturen verzeichneten einen außerordentlichen hype. erst eroberten Blancpain und Chronoswiss mit neuen modellen den markt, dann folgten Cartier und weitere bedeutende Uhrenmarken.

wird die Zeit beherrscht und ihre messung perfektioniert. als man in den 1980ern der industriellen, seelenlosen massenanfertigung von Uhren überdrüssig wurde, war wieder handgefertigte, meisterliche Qualität gefragt. Die haute horlogerie – die hohe Uhrmacherei – würde es ohne manufakturen nicht geben. Die Kombination aus handwerklichem Geschick und aufregenden ideen, und das ohne Verrat an bewährten Traditionen, zeichnen die arbeiten exklusiver Uhrmacher aus. nicht nur hersteller zu sein, sondern auch den status der manufaktur innezuhaben, bringt Prestige und Profit. Das Ziel ist es, eigene mechanische Uhrwerke zu entwickeln, die Finesse und minutiöses Geschick verkörpern. Die Krönung handgefertigter Uhren sind ihre außergewöhnlichen Komplikationen. hier können sich wahre meister beweisen.

Das Geschäft mit der haute horlogerie läuft prächtig. Jährliche Umsätze in zweistelliger milliardenhöhe, davon können viele Branchen nur träumen. Vor allem die schweizer Uhrenmarken punkten mit beneidenswerten exportzahlen und entsprechenden Gewinnen. Wer einen Blick in die Welt der haute horlogerie werfen möchte, der sollte der jährlich stattfindenden Baselworld, der weltgrößten messe für Uhren und schmuck in der schweiz, einen Besuch abstatten. hier lernt man schnell: eine hochwertige Uhr zeigt weit mehr als nur die Zeit an. sie ist Luxus am handgelenk, statussymbol und schmuckstück zugleich. Die idee, solch einen exklusiven artikel als Geldanlage zu nutzen, liegt nahe und kann durchaus sinn machen. Jedenfalls dann, wenn drei Faktoren zusammenkommen: man erwirbt ein exemplar zu einem attraktiven Preis. man hat den richtigen riecher für ein modell, das angesagt bleibt oder mal angesagt sein wird. Und: man lässt sich keine Fälschung andrehen. Die Preisspannen bei Luxusuhren sind beachtlich. händler bieten oft ordentlich nachlass an, das internet drückt die Preise zusätzlich.

Doch auch ein kleines Vermögen ist ein rausgeschmissenes Vermögen, wenn man auf das falsche Pferd setzt. einen Ladenhüter zu erwerben, ist eine wenig sinnvolle Geldanlage. Umso wichtiger ist es, sich beim Kauf eines kostbaren Zeitmessers der expertise eines Profis anzuvertrauen. Dennoch sind Uhren nicht

Not just to be a manufacturer, but also to have the status of expert maker, brings prestige and profit.

The objective is to develop unique mechanical movements that incorporate finesse and intricate skill. The crowning glory of handmade watches is their extraordinary complications. It is here that true masters are able to prove themselves.

CHERISHED COMPLICATIONS A watch that shows hours, minutes and seconds is the norm. However, if a mechanical movement is equipped with further extras, these are termed complications. The best-known of these are alarms, calendars, moon dials, time zones and chronograph (stopwatch) functions. But there are some much more sought-after complications, such as a tourbillon. It counteracts the influences of gravity and thus ensures great accuracy.

It can takes weeks to assemble the minute components of a mechanical movement perfectly. Demanding both technically and in terms of craftsmanship, such creations command a high price. Especially choice and complicated examples, above all if they are refined with precious materials, can correspond to the value of a luxury car or a house.

A TICKING INVESTMENT? The trade in Haute Horlogerie is booming.

Annual turnover is in the tens of billions.

Many industries can only dream of such levels. Swiss watch brands above all are doing well with enviable export figures and matching profits. Anyone wanting to get an insight into the world of Haute Horlogerie should pay a visit to Switzerland for the annual Baselworld, the world’s largest trade fair for watches and jewellery. Here you quickly learn that a high-quality watch does more than just tell the time. It is at once luxury on your wrist, a status symbol and a piece of jewellery. The idea of utilising such an

exclusive item as an investment seems obvious and definitely can make sense.

Certainly when three factors come together: you acquire a watch at an attractive price. You have a good nose for a model that will remain in fashion or even that will one day come into fashion. And: you don’t fall for a fake. The range of prices for luxury watches is considerable.

Dealers frequently offer hefty discounts, with the Internet putting pressure on prices as well. However, even a small fortune is a wasted fortune, if you back the wrong horse. Acquiring a slow seller is a not so sensible investment. It is therefore all the more important when buying a costly timepiece to seek the advice of an expert.

Nevertheless, watches are not necessarily the highest yielding of investments, and only about 20 percent of watch models are actually suitable as an investment.

Then, ten percent appreciation per year is possible. It is a different story if you’re lucky enough to have a sought-after mechanical classic by a luxury Swiss manufacturer, like a rare Patek Philippe or Rolex. A 1969 Rolex Daytona Ref 6263 – the model once worn by Paul Newman – was auctioned in 2013 for $1.1 million.

You could have bought the watch for less than 1500 dollars at the end of the 1980s.

This is the sort of increase in value that every collector dreams of.

HORLOGERIE HISTORY Today, wristwatches for men are often the only piece of jewellery that they wear and of which they approve. That was not always the case. In their early days, wristwatches were purely a ladies’ domain.

They remained loyal to the pocket watch until the start of the 20th century. Only when people realised that in certain situations pocket watches were impractical did opinions change. The first wristwatch wearers were thus members of the

German Navy, who were already being supplied with the practical timepieces in 1880. In 1904, Louis Cartier designed the Cartier Santos, a watch for pilots. It was the first with a leather strap. Ultimately, the use of wristwatches became increasingly widespread, not just in the military.

They became an everyday companion, chic and practical at the same time.

MECHANICAL VERSUS QUARTZ Haute Horlogerie is in fact a countermovement to the so-called ‘Quartz Crisis’.

Up until the end of the 1970s, quartz watches were the hot seller. They were not only very accurate, but also inexpensive and easy to produce. And precisely that was the crux of the matter. They

were quickly copied in the Far East, with cheap models fervently being made and flooding the market. The existence of many Swiss watchmakers was at risk.

Surprisingly this low was followed by an incredible high that endures to this day.

The mechanical watch celebrated its renaissance and traditional Swiss watchmakers in particular registered an extraordinary level of demand. First Blancpain and Chronoswiss conquered the market with new models, followed by Cartier and other major watch brands.

In a fully automated underground highrack storage facility the car then awaits its new owner. Following the spectacular show, the proud vehicle owner is then met in the exclusive environment of the Premium Lounge by their personal customer advisor and is able to take possession of their new BMW. The open layout of the handover area, known as the Premiere, enables tourists too to take part in this special moment. In 2013, over 21,500 vehicles

passed through this area. Up to 160 can be handed over per day. The middle of the year saw the first BMW i8 vehicles being presented to their owners at the BMW Welt. The customers picking them up come from all over the world.

Youthful flag designer… Abdulla Mohammed Al Ma’enah was just 19 years old when he designed the flag of the United Arab Emirates in 1971. The winner of a design contest, he faced strong competition, with 1,030 designs submitted. The talented Emirati was inspired by an Arabian poem by Safi Al Deen Al Hill, in which the colours green, white, black and red are used to describe the noble character of the Arabs. Abdulla Mohammed Al Ma’enah is now the UAE ambassador to Chile.
