MIXED MESSAGES
Horse sales are quite popular, especially in the fall, as many folks sell all types of horses from colts to aged animals. One can gain a lot of entertainment from attending these sales, whether it be the fall draft horse sale at Waverly, Iowa; top line production sales; or perhaps a monthly consignment sale. I particularly enjoy the Waverly sale as there is much more than horses sold there. There are acres of buggies and wagons, all sorts of harness and tack, and watching the many Amish horsemen driving teams both hitched or on foot. Perhaps the most entertainment at a horse sale, however, can be derived from just listening to conversations and comments of those packed in around you. Horsemen are like politicians in that they all have an opinion; things like whether or not they like a horse with a small head, good slope on shoulders, good withers and girth, short back, good slope on the hip, and knees and hocks set low. One feature that most men agree on is that they like a good sized rump on their horses. I
won’t repeat some of the comments regarding this feature inasmuch as some of the language used in these descriptions can be quite colorful. Cattle sales can be quite boring in comparison to horse sales. While the greatest amount of cattle sales are during the fall and early winter months, most emphasis is put on the mere fact that ranchers like as much fat as possible on their calves when they go to market. Fat means weight, and that translates to dollars. Conversations at cattle sales are usually about how much more a rancher’s calves weigh than his neighbors, or vice versa. This brings back memories of a controversy between my late Uncle Ralph and dear Aunt Opal, who ranched in Western Nebraska. Their little girl, Susie, was born six months prior to the incident that created a royal spat. Ralph had agreed to watch the baby while Opal went out to milk the cow, however, before she left the house she could not help but watch Ralph cuddling

the little bundle-of-joy and hear him make the comment, “Oh, how I love your fat little checks,â€? giving the giggling baby a little kiss on the forehead. As a joke, Opal spoke up and asked, “Are you talking to me, Ralph?â€? “Of course not,â€? replied Ralph, “I don’t like fat on my women.â€? I’m sure Ralph wished he would have never made that comment, but it was too late. One thing called for another as Opal snarled back, “Well, your mother is overweight‌do you dislike that?â€? As Ralph dug his hole deeper, he said a simple, “That’s different.â€? With a slam of the door, Opal broke a speed record milking the cow that evening, and I understand it was a good week before things simmered down. I’m sure this scenario has been played over in many households, as it seems men like everything fat except their women (with the exception of mothers and grandmothers). I suppose that also falls true with the size of the rump.
