A GIFT SUGGESTION
I have recently been helping an elderly friend write her memoirs into a booklet. She plans to give a copy of this to her immediate family members for Christmas, and I must admit that it has been a pleasant experience for me to help her with this project. This is something everybody should do sometime in his or her lifetime. If you don’t make a record of your story, it will not happen and a lot of information will be lost forever. We are all guilty of not recording stories of family members or neighbors before their passing, and a lot of history has been buried with them. The same thing can happen with our own stories if they are not preserved. Just because you were not a homesteader or a child of the depression era does not mean you don’t have a lot of interesting events that transpired during your lifetime that should be recorded. I have often thought of the many changes that my parents and grandparents went through, but reflecting on my own life, I too have seen many changes.
This particular lady does talk about her childhood during the 30s and the economic hardships her family experienced. She describes many events that transpired while attending a one-room country school; blizzards; grasshoppers devouring crops and destroying their gardens…their main food supply; hauling water; and many of the other adversities experienced during those hard years. She describes the trauma of leaving home for the first time and taking a bus to Washington D.C. to work in an office at the Pentagon during World War II. Being terribly homesick during her tenure, she was more than excited when word was received that the war ended. The young lady from a rural area in South Dakota was soon enjoying the celebration and parade led by General Eisenhower, and the excitement of returning home to South Dakota and her family. The story describes her courtship and marriage; working alongside her husband to build a cow herd and expanding their farming operation; the birth of her children and the death of her parents; and many events, both tragic and happy,

that transpired within the family and community. Her story travels from a time when there was no electricity, running water or refrigeration. She describes digging a basement by hand, finally getting indoor plumbing, and the year she first got to watch the World Series on television and what an exciting event that was. I have experienced a lot of laughter while transcribing some of the hilarious events she relates to, but have shed a tear or two when she describes the sudden death of her husband, several years later her youngest son, and just a year ago, a grandson. The story ends with advice to her readers to “smell the lilacs while they are blooming, as they only bloom once a year, and to enjoy a rainbow as it only happens for a brief moment.” I think this is excellent advice and the only thing I would add would be, “to write your story.” It will be the best gift you can ever give your family and will be cherished forever… guaranteed.

B R E N DA L A N EA L ( I NG L ET T ) LA M B LE Y March 18, 1963 - October 22 , 2017 Brenda LaNeal (Inglett) Lambley was born in Burke , SD on March 18, 1963 at the Burke Community Hospital to Neal and Cheryl (Bauld) lnglett of Lucas, SD. She joined her father in heaven on October 22 , 2017 at the early age of 54. When she was born she had twelve living grandparents. In 1967 they moved to Burton , NE where she attended elementary school where her father taught. In 1970 the family moved to Reseda, California. There she attended Newcastle Elementary School and Cleveland High School graduating in June of 1981. She was a very active child, choosing not to sleep much. In her youth she was active in soccer , softball, and cheerleading for the Woodland Hills Cowboys. She also loved her accordion lessons ... HAHA!! She was a good big sister to her younger siblings helping to care for them. The family traveled back to South Dakota every summer to visit relatives. During these trips she learned how to ride hors es at Grandpa Bauld’s farm, although she was not real fond of horses. In her teens she spent most of her summers in South Dakota with her Aunt Julie and Uncle Ronnie. It was during the summer of 1980 that she met Donivan. They were married on July 25 , 1981 in Burke, South Dakota. From this marriage four children were born: LaNeal Brooke, Chisum Thomas, Dillon Donivan, and Cheyenne Rose. From the beginning of married life, Brenda began working at the Burke Livestock Auction as an office employee and in later years took over as head of the kitchen. Friends and family came from near and far to enjoy her delicious cooking. This employment continued throughout her entire life and she was proud of the lifelong family business accomplishments. She became a co-owner of the business in 2014. Along with spending Saturdays at the Burke Livestock Auction, she spent many weekdays along side Donivan at numerous sales across several states. As their children became more involved in activities, she took a position in the Burke school cafeteria. Here she spent 17 years meeting and greeting each child that came through the lunch line as if they were her own. She always made time to attend and prioritize her children making sure she never missed an activity or event. A hard decision was made to retire from the Burke School so she could spend more time on all the things that she loved . Her biggest loves were her eight grandchildren that she had been blessed with. Along with her family, her biggest passions were creating beauty in her home, yard and flower garden , no matter the season or time of year. If she was not following her kids, grandkids, or in her yard, she would be found in her kitchen preparing plentiful home cooked meals for family and friends. Blessed to have shared Brenda’s life are: her husband Donivan of Burke, SD; her children LaNeal (Jim) Schonebaum of Herrick, SD ; Chisum (Kaira) Lambley of Burke, SD; Dillon Lambley of Burke, SD; Cheyenne Lambley and friend (Jared Miller) of Hartford , SD. Grandchildren: Jayder 10, Jakoby 7, Jazlee 5, Jeven 1 (Schonebaum); Ryggan 6, Ryken 4, Remington 3 (Lambley); Taylee Gant 5. Her mother Cheryl lnglett of Reseda , CA; siblings Janeane (Ron) Munman of Calabassas, CA; Kimberley Moe of Moorpark , CA; Tracy (Brian) Price of Stevenson Ranch, CA; and Noble lnglett ofRes eda, CA; fatherin- law Herris Lambley of Herrick , SD; two sisters-in-law , two brothers-in-law, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and fri ends. Preceding her in death are her father Neal lngl ett , mother-inlaw Mary Lambley, and grandparents (Paternal) C P lnglett , Noble & Viola lnglett , John & Ethel Smith. We had a mixed offering, with yearlings, weaned calves and non-weaned calves. With the recent upsurge in fat cattle market we see the calf market at good levels. Demand has been strong for big heavy steers over 650# for several weeks, inconsistent for upper 5 wt and low 6 wts. Many good heifer calves in town, many going for replacement.
