Welcome! Fellow Cattle Producers, Welcome to our 12th Annual Sale! While it seems like 2023 went by relatively quickly, overall it was a good year with a little more moisture for grass and hay production. We also experienced a strong cattle market and look forward to more good years ahead. We believe it is our responsibility to provide our commercial customers with sound profitable genetics, and are proud of the seedstock we are presenting today for your consideration. Our bulls were once again developed at home on their 25 acre pasture. Our development strategy insures soundness and good hardened feet. It doesn’t matter if it’s the best numbered performance bull in the breed, if he doesn’t stand on good feet, the rest doesn’t matter. We feel like we are striking the right balance with a moderate rate of gain and plenty of exercise so the bulls we offer can provide our customers with a longer service life. As always we continue to provide you with reliable data you need to make the best selections for your breeding program. To insure we have the best data available, all of the sale cattle have been DNA tested to provide genomic enhanced EPDS and verified parentage. TWO YEAR BREEDING GUARANTEE: We guarantee all of our bulls to be fertile and sound for their first TWO breeding seasons. This guarantee does not cover death and is void if improper management is apparent.
ABSENTEE BIDS: Internet Bidding:
• Year one through October 1st 2024: We will provide a back-up bull or credit the full cost of the bull minus salvage value to the next years sale.
Phone Bidding: If you wish to bid on the phone you may contact Brad or any of the sale staff to discuss different options. We will contact any successful absentee bidders the day after the bull sale for purchase conformation and delivery arrangements. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over any information contained in this catalog VIDEO: A video of each lot offered in the sale will be available at www.dvauction.com SUPPLEMENT SHEET: A supplement sheet will be available including actual scrotal measurements and updated information the week before the sale. BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAM: All bulls sell as guaranteed breeders. The bulls will be examined by West River Veterinary Clinic, prior to the sale, to determine they are developing correctly for their age. We highly recommend you have these bulls tested closer to your turnout time. We guarantee they pass a fertility test by turnout time.

Example: You pay $5,000 for a bull and an injury occurs. He pounds out for $1200. You would receive a $3800 credit.
• Year two, Oct 1st 2024 through Oct. 1st 2025: One-third of the full cost of the bull minus salvage value will be credited toward the next years sale. o Example: You pay $5,000 for a bull and an injury occurs. DELIVERY AND BOARDING: BULLS: OPTION 1 – We will provide free keep on the bulls until April 15th and deliver them free within a 300 mile radius. For distances further than 300 miles bulls will be delivered at a fair price to central locations. OPTION 2 - We will provide free keep on the bulls until June 1st if picked up from the ranch. OPTION 3 - Receive a $200 discount on any bulls picked up on sale day FEMALES: Transportation for the open heifers and bred cows can be arranged with buyer responsible for delivery cost.

Red Angus Guide to EPDS and Indexes ProS ... Profitability and Sustainability is an all-purpose index that predicts average economic differences in all segments in the beef supply chain. This index is a combination of the breeding objectives modeled in the HerdBuilder and GridMaster selection indexes. In this index, replacement heifers are retained from within the herd and all remaining progeny are fed out to slaughter and sold on a quality-based grid. Traits included in this index include calving ease, growth, HPG, STAY, Mature Weight, Dry Matter Intake and carcass traits. The resulting index is expressed in dollars per head born (Index/High Value).
HB ..... HerdBuilder is a maternal selection index that predicts the economic differences of animals for traits that are important from conception through weaning. Expressed as dollars per head born, HB is calculated based on the scenario that bulls are mated to heifers and cows, replacement heifers are retained and all remaining progeny are marketed at weaning. Traits included in the HB index include Calving Ease Direct, Calving Ease Maternal, Weaning Weight, Milk, Mature Weight, Heifer Pregnancy and Stayability (Index/High Value).
GM..... GridMaster is a selection index that predicts the average economic difference of non-replacement calves through the postweaning phase of production. GM places selection pressure on growth, feedyard performance and carcass traits. Expressed as dollars per head born, GM is calculated based on the scenario that progeny are fed out to slaughter and marketed on a quality-based carcass grid. Traits included in GM include Average Daily Gain, Carcass Weight, Dry Matter Intake, Marbling, Back Fat and Rib Eye Area (Index/High Value).
CED .......Calving Ease Direct predicts differences in the percent of calves born unassisted out of 2-year-old dams. (Percent/High Value)
CEM ...... Calving Ease Maternal predicts differences in the percent of daughters who are able to calve unassisted as 2-year-old heifers. (Percent/High Value)
BW ........Birth Weight predicts differences in actual birth weight of progeny. (Pounds/Low Value)
STAY......Stayability predicts differences in the ability of an animals’ retained daughters to remain productive in the herd – calve every year – through 6 years of age. (Percent/High Value)
WW .......Weaning Weight predicts differences in 205-day weaning weight. (Pounds/High Value) YW ........Yearling Weight predicts differences in 365-day yearling weight. (Pounds/High Value) ADG .......Average Daily Gain predicts differences in weight gain between 205 and 365 days of age. (Pounds/High Value) DMI .......Dry Matter Intake predicts differences in daily feed intake as measured in a feedlot during the post-weaning period. AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION SELECTION TOOLS Expected Progeny Difference (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Accuracy (ACC), is the reliability that can be placed on the EPD. Accuracy will range from 0 to 1 with an accuracy closer to 1.0 indicating higher reliability. Accuracy is impacted by the amount of information that is included in the analysis including individual genotype and performance records as well as number of progeny and ancestral records.
Mature Weight (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk (Milk), expressed in pounds of calf weaned, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability in his daughters. In other words, it is the part of the calf’s weaning weight attributes to milk and mothering ability.
Mature Height (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.
