We would like to welcome everyone to our 36th Annual Bull Sale. I would like to say 2023 was certainly a challenge! We started out with a cold, snowy winter that was hard on cows, bulls and cowboys. Then it got hot and melted all the dry snow, and we were back in a drought for most of the spring and summer. We did not have a late frost so the flies did real well, and the grasshoppers love the dry conditions! Then we got all of our rain in August. Because of all of this, weaning weights on our calves and just about everybody’s calves, weaned 40-70 pounds light. This years’ offering consists of our top indexing bulls. The bulls were raised without creep. The bulls were grown out on a high roughage ration using Hubbard Blue Print at 50% of ration and were hand fed twice a day. Balance of ration was free choice chopped hay. Bulls are cake broke. The bulls have had three rounds of vaccinations. Bulls will be fertility tested prior to the sale and will be guaranteed good breeders. We offer free delivery until April 10th up to 200 miles or you can deduct $100 per bull if you take home sale day. If you can’t make it to the sale, bulls will be live on Cattle USA or get a hold of us, and we will find someone to be on the phone to bid for you. Crossbreeding Adds $$$ to Your Pockets Crossbreeding is proven science, and taking advantage of the heterosis resulting from a crossbreeding system is a “free lunch.” Crossbreeding is a tool the forefathers of ranching knew they needed to make a better beef animal. And the beef industry isn’t alone when it comes to crossbreeding. The dairy industry uses crossbreeding to either improve longevity or increase butter fat content in milk. The swine industry has used crossbreeding for decades to make an animal that meets industry and consumer demands while adding efficiencies to production. Crossbreeding isn’t limited to livestock. Hybrid seeds have had a tremendous impact on agricultural productivity. Today, nearly all corn and 50% of all rice are hybrids. Hybrid seeds are an improvement over open pollinated seeds in terms of qualities such as yield, time to maturity and resistance to pests and diseases. Producing crossbred calves allows producers to make a product that is in demand, costs less to produce and puts more dollars in their pocket. Crossbreeding has another benefit when crossbred females are kept as replacements and are allowed to contribute to the herd. It’s proven that crossbred cows give you more: 8% more cow longevity, 25% more lifetime productivity, 8% increased calf crop weaned, 5% increased weaning performance and 4% more in calf yearling performance. Here’s what others within the beef industry say about crossbreeding: • “Recently, I am hearing concern from some very large, progressive producers as their cows become more straight bred in a tough environment. Longevity, rebreeding and calf survivability all become important issues. I don’t think their challenges are because these producers have bought lessor quality bulls or managed their ranches incorrectly.
