SIMPLE GIFTS

Special note on last week’s article about the Clearfield Hall: There was a wrong date for the upcoming Christmas program, which is December 3 and not December 2.

The holiday season always finds us reflecting on seasons past. While thinking about the not-so-long ago, I sometimes get the feeling that times have changed so much that no one would believe how we used to celebrate holidays. This is in part – a big part – of how commercialized Christmas and other holidays have become.

I was raised in the 1940s and 50s, and I guess our family was poor, but we didn’t know it. We were no different than most American families. We were rich if you counted all the blessings of having a comfortable little home and plenty to eat, compliments of a hard working father; a mother that was a homemaker and cook unsurpassed by none; all that, plus a lot of love. Naturally, we never heard of “big ticket items” and our Christmas gift giving was simple. Christmas events were centered around school and our church.

When school resumed after the New Year, the teachers would often have the children take turns telling the rest of

the class what they got for Christmas. Rarely did anyone get more than one or two items, and I always felt so sorry for classmates that got nothing. I guess they were considered the “poor” kids. Whenever my mother heard about the poor kids, even with her meager financial resources, she made sure they had a gift the next year, and that giving attitude was with her throughout her 94 years of life. Many of the gifts she provided were the home-made kind, whether it was baked goods, hand crafted items, or the hundreds of lap robes and comforters she sewed and gifted throughout her lifetime. Perhaps witnessing this gave me a great appreciation for simple gifts, or as some would call them, “gifts from the heart.”

There is a saying, “Less is more,” and there is a lot of truth in that. My paternal grandmother was truly poor and lived in a time when there was no welfare, unemployment, social security, or other means of income. “Poor” meant poor. She was probably the poorest person I ever knew, but also probably one of the happiest. Her cup was always half full, and that was evidenced by the articles she used to write for local newspapers…her only source of income, which was quite

meager. Poor as she was, she never failed to send her grandchildren a Christmas gift, which were always quite simple, but to this day are my most cherished possessions, such as a book mark made from a piece of birch bark. In 1957, she sent me a package of sequins, as she knew I liked to do crafts. The sequins cost five cents, probably the most money she was ever able to spend on a gift. She always attached a little poem with the gift. I have kept that little poem all through the years, have framed it, and display it each year at Christmastime to remind me to keep things in perspective when it comes to holiday shopping.

That little poem and the homemade book marker are examples of how a “simple gift” can bring more joy than any big ticket item, and will always be my favorite Christmas memory.
