ust as flowers and fruit trees require healthy roots to produce beautiful blooms, our relationships flourish when built on a strong foundation. While a plant's roots remain hidden beneath the soil, absorbing nutrients and providing stability, our personal roots –our values, beliefs, and connections, sustain us through life's seasons.

"Deep in their roots, all flowers keep their light" - Theodore Roethke. This truth reminds us that even in our darkest moments, our source of light remains constant when we stay grounded in our faith, values and authentic relationships.

Our root system stretches beyond our lineage and family tree. It encompasses our spiritual foundation, core values, and the life-giving WINTER 2O25 EDITION

relationships that we cultivate. Like a gardener tending to precious plants, we must regularly examine and nurture these roots. Are we drawing strength from our faith and community?

Have we absorbed unhealthy beliefs about love and relationships that need gentle uprooting?

To nurture healthy relationships we must honestly consider our personal foundation. Ask yourself, what values and beliefs anchor your life? Reflect on how your faith guides your understanding of love and commitment. Notice which relationships model the qualities you admire and whether family members or mentors have demonstrated Christ-like love. Then examine your relationships' roots: What practices keep you connected with loved ones? Perhaps it's weekly family dinners, daily prayer together, or regular heart-to-heart conversations.

Remember that healthy relationships also need supportive community – have wise people and mentors around who can offer wisdom and encouragement during challenging seasons and celebrate the accomplishments and victories throughout.

In our fast-paced world of social media and constant connection, we rarely pause to tend to our

roots. The quiet work happens underground, away from others' opinions and society's expectations. It's in these moments of reflection and prayer that we align with our truest selves and God's purpose for our relationships.

When we invest in strengthening our roots – deepening our faith, examining our beliefs, and nurturing meaningful connections – we create an environment where relationships can flourish. ho doesn’t know the traditional Christmas song, “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town!” It’s a classic and will be around when my grandchildren have children! My favorite part of the song is: “He knows when you are sleeping, he knows when you're awake, he knows when Sheka has been bad or good, so she better be good for goodness’ sake!” I got excited when I heard it and couldn’t wait for Old Saint Nick to deliver my presents!

The following day, I would approach mom with puppy dog eyes saying, “Tell Santa I’ve been a

good girl all year, as I handed her the handwritten note addressed to Santa Claus at the North Pole. But the truth of the matter was, had I really been obedient to my mother?

Ephesians 6:2 says, “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise. F

or many years, I wrestled with the internal struggle of who I was in Christ and how to express it. Like so many others, I feared the opinions of others—wondering what they would think, how they would judge me, and what consequences might come from openly declaring my faith. There were moments when I allowed the fear of rejection, of being misunderstood, to paralyze me. Deep inside, I knew the truth. I knew that Jesus Christ was my Savior, that He died and rose again for me, but fear kept me from fully embracing that identity in front of others.

The internal tug-of-war was real. There were days when the call to be bold and unashamed burned in my heart, yet the fear of standing out, of speaking out, kept me silent. It wasn't that I didn't believe; I did. I believed with all my heart. But the weight of shame and doubt often loomed larger than my faith. I feared what others might say or do if they knew the extent of my relationship with God. WINTER 2O25 EDITION

BOLDNESS TO STAND

But today, something has changed. Today, I stand without hesitation, without fear. I declare, unapologetically, that I am a follower of Jesus Christ. It is not out of pride or selfrighteousness, but out of sheer gratitude and love for the One who gave everything for me. I no longer allow the voices of doubt to drown out the truth of who I am in Christ. Today, I am bold, and I am unashamed.

Every word I write, every story I share, and every book or article I contribute to is a testimony of God's goodness and faithfulness. I no longer write to please people or to gain approval. I write because I know my words have power, not because of anything in me, but because of the power of the Holy Spirit working through me.

My words are a reflection of His glory, a way to shine light into the darkness, to share the hope that has saved me.

In a world where silence is often easier than standing firm, I've learned that silence isn't an option when it comes to my faith. If it weren't for the Lord who has been by my side, guiding me every step of the way, I would be lost. Perhaps I would even be broken beyond repair. But God has sustained me. By His grace, I stand firm and bold. By His Spirit, I find the strength to speak out, to write, to share His truth with the world. It is His love that compels me to declare His goodness in every part of my life.

This message isn't just for me—it's for all of us. To anyone who is struggling with fear or doubt, to anyone who feels like their faith is too small or their voice too insignificant, know this: the God who sustains you is greater than anything that tries to silence you. He is greater than any fear, any judgment, any rejection. His love is louder, His grace is stronger, and His truth is more powerful than any obstacle that stands in your way.

Forget What You’re Not. Rock What You’ve Got! Who Are You?

D

o you know who you are? Really, think about it. Not your title, what you do or who you have become based on family position, traditions, societal norms and pressures or unrealistic expectations.

Again, I ask, do you know who you are?

I thought I knew who I was - a daughter, sister, auntie, mother, wife. It wasn't until after divorce and becoming an empty nester that I realized those are titles and not who I am. I realized I didn't know who I was without describing my career or my relationship to those I love.

As young children we are okay with being our authentic selves. There is a freedom we possess, and we don't seek validation from our peers. The change seemingly occurs in middle school where we develop the desire to blend in.

We want to look like everyone else; therefore, we abandon our individuality and begin to look outside of ourselves for approval.

Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV I am a new creation, and I am unlearning things I thought were part of my personality. My likes and dislikes aren't the same. I know that my validation comes from God and God alone. I always felt out of place, peculiar. God's word tells me that I am “…a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people….” 1 Peter 2:9 KJV I now embrace my authenticity and individuality.

For I know that I am God's masterpiece and so are you. If you don't know who you are, the journey of self-discovery starts with being honest.

Blaise Pascal says “We must learn our limits. We are all something but none of us are everything.”

At the “big” age of 45, I had to be honest with myself and admit that I didn't know who I was. I had become a mash-up of those I admired and who I thought I should be. I hid behind my accomplishments and the titles that I carry.

It wasn't until I gave my life to Christ and began to seek God that I learned I am not what I became to navigate and survive this world.

Her Daughter's Brother Mattered By: Dr. LaToya Geter-McElroy

I

will never forget the day I was riding in the car with my mother, and she said to me, “You have a little brother. His name is Treadell.”

He was the child she found out about by going to the child support office to see why the child support money from my biological father had decreased.

In the 8th grade, my peer became my cousin when she said, “You look like my little cousin. His name is Treadell.” I immediately told her he was my brother. I always thought about him. He was the sibling on my father's side that I didn't know.

My mother would take me to see my older sister when she came into town from Florida. I would randomly see my little sister in the store. I learned of my three younger brothers in my adult life.

I met my little brother for the first time at my 13th birthday party. Big sister mode was activated and won't ever deactivate. I started calling him

and checking his grades. We are adults now, and I call him about his mail coming to my house. He has lived with me before. He will always have a place to rest his head. I made sure he had everything he needed for his high school graduation and showed up to see him graduate. When I graduated from college, he was there. When he graduated from barber college, I was there. He blessed me with my niece and gave my husband his blessing to have my hand. He was a bodyguard in my wedding, and no one can tell him he's not in real life. He's my little big brother only because he's taller.

I'm forever his big sister, and even time knows that. If he calls me, I'm coming.

I am the only child of my late mother and late stepfather.

I am the second born of seven children belonging to my biological father. God knew my brother and I would only have each other. I am grateful He chose my mother to believe that family mattered for her daughter.

Every hug, every bedtime story, every moment of listening when your child has something to say are small acts that build the foundation of trust, security, and

confidence that shape a child's future. Parenting isn't about buying the biggest gifts or trying to be perfect; it's about consistently showing up, even in the smallest ways.

THE POWER OF SMALL MOMENTS In a world that moves at a fast pace, it's easy to believe that impact comes from big, bold actions. But when it comes to raising children, it's the small, daily choices that leave lasting impressions. Here are a few ways small steps can lead to a big impact in parenting:

1. Listening with Full Attention Children often communicate in bits and pieces, dropping small hints about their feelings, struggles, or joys throughout the day. Taking just five minutes to listen—truly listen—without distractions shows them that their voice matters. When children feel heard, they build confidence in expressing themselves and navigating emotions.

2. Speaking Life Into Your Child Words are powerful. A simple “I believe in you” or “I love the

4. Modeling Emotional Intelligence Children learn how to handle emotions by watching their parents. Apologizing when you make a mistake, expressing gratitude, or managing stress in a healthy way teaches them how to process their own emotions effectively.

5. Encouraging Small Acts of Kindness Teaching children to appreciate and serve others starts with simple actions. Encouraging them to hold the door open for someone, share a kind word, or help a friend fosters empathy and a heart for service. These small lessons shape them into compassionate adults.

CONSISTENCY OVER PERFECTION One of the biggest misconceptions in parenting is that you must have all the answers or get everything right. The truth is, it's the consistency, not perfection, that matters most.

A child doesn't need a perfect parent; they need a present and engaged one.

There will be moments of frustration, exhaustion, and doubt. But even on those tough days, the small choices like choosing to show

here are many New Year traditional foods such as greens, beans/ black eyed peas, and pork, due to its symbolism of moving forward. For those of you who do not enjoy pork there is great news, you can enjoy fish and expect the same results.

Here is one of my favorite recipes for garlic honey salmon that you may use to bring prosperity and forward movement into your New Year.

INGREDIENTS

INSTRUCTIONS

1.2 lb Fresh Atlantic salmon 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce 1tbs Soy sauce 4 tbs Honey 2 garlic cloves 4 tbs butter Optional: 1 tbs hot sauce 1 tbs Lemon juice

I

n large saute pan melt butter once pan is extremely hot place Salmon skin down (if your salmon has skin)

Then add peeled garlic, cook for 3 minutes then flip and add honey, soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce. Let cook for 2 minutes. Then add honey, let cook for 1 minute.

Remove from heat and let rest for 2 minutes.

Serve and enjoy.

JUMPING IN IN DEEP JUMPING A Spirit-Filled Conference That Left a Lasting Impact By: Angel Charmaine

T

he Jumping in Deep conference, hosted by Virtuous Women of Excellence, was nothing short of transformational. Held over two powerful days—February 1 - 2, 2025, this gathering of faith-filled individuals was designed to encourage and equip believers to dive deeper into their spiritual journey. Led by Tamika Burnett, the founder of Virtuous Women of Excellence, alongside dedicated members Francine Martin, Haceladia Hodges, Sabrina Stoner, and Nicole Smith, this event left attendees inspired, strengthened, and ready to take bold steps in their faith.

A Night of Encouragement and Revelation The first night set the tone for an anointed weekend, featuring impactful messages from Tamika Burnett and her husband, Cordrez Burnett. Cordrez's message was concise, precise, and carried undeniable power. His words were clear, strong, and resonated deeply with everyone in attendance. A Spirit-Led Second Day As the conference continued on Day 2, attendees gathered with anticipation for the day's featured speaker, Apostle Kecia Williams. From the moment she began speaking, it was clear that she was being led by the Spirit of God. Her words were raw, heartfelt, and undeniably anointed. She didn't just preach; she ministered. The presence of God filled the room as she spoke, touching hearts and

bringing forth transformation in the lives of those who were open to receive.

Before Apostle Williams took the stage, attendees enjoyed a fun and interactive Kahoots Trivia Game. The energy in the room was high as participants competed for prizes that weren't just symbolic keepsakes but practical gifts of laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, and other everyday essentials.

This thoughtful touch reflected the organization's heart for meeting both the spiritual and practical needs of the community.

amika Burnett is president and founder of Virtuous Women of Excellence (V.W.O.E), a nonprofit organization based in Concord, NC. Established in July 2021, V.W.O.E. Is dedicated to empowering, encouraging, and evangelizing women through various spiritual, personal, and professional growth stages.

Under Tamika's leadership, V.W.O.E. has organized essential events, similar to the recent Jumping in Deep conference in Augusta, Ga. She has made a significant difference in the organization and quickly supported people in need of assistance. Following the ideas from Proverbs 31, she wants to honor God and His teachings by doing exemplary philanthropic acts that benefit the community.

Tamika's leadership relishes helping women fulfill their goals, dreams, and aspirations. It is her mission to inspire them and positively impact their lives. One thing that brings her joy is watching women overcome their doubts, confront challenges, and confidently pursue their passions.

E

ntrepreneurship isn't just about launching a business—it's about becoming the kind of person who can sustain and grow one. Many people believe that success comes from a perfect business plan, the right connections, or a stroke of luck, but in reality, it's the mindset that makes the difference.

Take Angela, for example. She started her business with passion and a vision, but soon found herself overwhelmed. The setbacks were constant. Orders were delayed, marketing efforts fell flat, and there were moments where she questioned if she was even meant to be an entrepreneur. What she learned, however, was that the difference between those who WINTER 2O25 EDITION

succeed and those who give up isn't just skill or resources. It's the ability to adapt, to take small but intentional steps, and to keep moving forward even when things aren't perfect.

The first shift Angela had to make was in how she viewed failure. Every time something didn't go as planned, she saw it as proof that she wasn't good enough. It wasn't until she met a mentor, someone who had been through the same struggles, that she started to see failure differently. “Every setback is a lesson,” her mentor told her. “You either win or you learn. There is no losing.” That mindset change alone transformed the way she approached her business.

Instead of retreating when

things got tough, she started analyzing what went wrong and adjusting.

Angela also had to get comfortable with taking risks.

She had always played it safe, waiting for the “perfect moment” to make big moves.

But the truth was, waiting for perfection was costing her valuable opportunities. She started small by testing a new product with a limited release instead of a full launch, hiring help for just a few hours a week instead of making a huge financial commitment. Each small risk built her confidence, and before she knew it, she was making decisions more quickly and with greater trust in her own instincts.

THE ENTREPRENEUR’S JOURNEY

One of the hardest lessons she learned was the importance of taking action. Ideas came to her all the time, but in the past, she let them sit in her notebook, waiting for the right time. She realized that execution was everything. It didn't have to be perfect; it just had to happen.

Instead of spending months overanalyzing her marketing plan, she put it out there. Instead of waiting for the perfect opportunity to network, she reached out to people, asked questions, and made connections.

But perhaps the most transformative shift Angela made was learning to balance ambition with self-care. In the early days, she worked late into the night, skipping meals and sacrificing sleep. She told herself she had to grind harder, push more, do whatever it took. Until one day, she hit a wall—physically and mentally exhausted. That's when she realized that burnout wouldn't help her business grow; it would kill it. She started setting boundaries, taking breaks, and giving herself permission to rest. And ironically, the more she took care of herself, the better her business did.

Angela's story is not unique. Every successful entrepreneur has had to learn these lessons in some form or another. The key is understanding that success doesn't come from one big, gamechanging move. It comes from a series of small, consistent steps—choosing to learn from failure, making decisions with confidence, taking action even when it's uncomfortable, and taking care of yourself along the way.

If you're on this journey, remember: You don't have to get everything right today. You just have to keep moving, one small step at a time. The success you dream of is built in the choices you make every single day.

asmine had lost count of how many schools she'd been to. Every time she started settling in, her mother would pack up their things, and they'd be gone by sunrise. New city. New school. New whispers.

She walked into yet another cafeteria, tray in hand, scanning for a safe place to sit. The moment she took a seat, the whispers began.

exhausting it was to always be on guard. How lonely.

One night, sitting in her apartment, she scrolled through childhood photos. There, in an old picture, was a version of herself she barely recognized—a little girl with bright eyes, a toothy grin, arms open wide to the world.

Before the moves. Before the whispers. Before she learned to armor herself.

"You think you cute, huh?"

"She ain't all that."

The first time she heard it, she was confused.

The second time, hurt. By the third school, she had learned. The only way to survive was to harden. She squared her shoulders, raised her chin, and looked them dead in the eye.

Tears welled up. She had spent her whole life trying to prove she was untouchable, but deep down, she had never wanted to fight. She had just wanted to belong.

For the first time, she allowed herself to ask the question she had been too afraid to face.

"Who am I, without the mask?"

"I ain't scared of none of y'all."

She learned to fight, not with her fists—though she did that when necessary—but with her words, her glare, the tension in her body that said, Don't mess with me. It worked. They stopped testing her. They stopped whispering.

Instead, they feared her.

By the time Jasmine reached adulthood, she had perfected the mask. At work, in relationships, even with her own family, she led with sharp edges. Confidence, they called it.
