Supporting Students with Additional Educational Needs (AEN)
At Sacred Heart School Drogheda, we are deeply committed to providing an inclusive learning environment where every student is supported to reach their full potential—academically, socially, and personally.
Early Identification & Smooth Transition
Our support begins even before a student starts with us. We liaise closely with primary schools to gather relevant information that helps us understand each student’s individual needs. Where appropriate, we arrange meetings with parents and our AEN team to ensure a smooth and supportive transition.
Tailored Support Plans
At the beginning of the school year, we develop a provisional support plan for students with Additional Educational Needs. These plans are reviewed regularly to reflect students’ progress and any changes in circumstances.

We believe in a collaborative, wholeschool approach. This includes consultation with Subject Teachers, Department Heads, and Year Heads Ongoing staff training
At Sacred Heart School, our inclusive ethos ensures that all students— regardless of ability—are respected, supported, and given every opportunity to thrive in a caring and collaborative school community.
Student Leadership & Student Voice
Student leadership is a valued and integral part of life at Sacred Heart Secondary School. We believe in empowering students to take initiative, develop responsibility, and contribute meaningfully to the school community and beyond. Two formal leadership structures support this vision: the Student Representative Council (SRC) and the Student Leadership Council (SLC). The SRC provides a platform for students to voice their opinions, represent their peers, and collaborate with staff on school-wide initiatives. Meanwhile, the SLC is made up of senior students who take on mentoring roles, lead school events, and promote positive school culture and House Competitions. Through these councils, students develop confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of civic engagement.
Additional to the SRC & SLC, The Mentor Programme at Sacred Heart School, Drogheda is a key part of our commitment to student wellbeing and peer support. Each year, 6th Year students are appointed to the position of mentors for incoming first-year students, helping them to settle into school life with confidence and ease. Mentors offer guidance, friendship, and practical support, acting as positive role models and trusted points of contact. Through regular check-ins, group activities, and informal conversations, the programme fosters a strong sense of community and belonging. It also provides leadership opportunities for senior students, helping them to develop empathy, communication skills, and a deeper connection to the school ethos.
“The quality of developing leadership capacity in the school was excellent”
