The Fund for Innovation in Math & Science ’95

David Grossman

This past December, Episcopal Trustee David

Grossman ’95 and his wife, Kate Tomford, established an endowed fund to support innovation in math and science at Episcopal. The goal of this fund is to bring excellent teaching practices, programs, and resources to bear for Episcopal Academy students to thrive in math and science fields.

“David and Kate’s generous support comes at a most opportune time,” says Cathy Hall, the Assistant Head of School. “STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) programs are an area of great priority for us. We have been seeking new ways to expand opportunities to inspire students and to innovate these program areas. This gift will not only provide resources for our faculty to grow professionally, but it will also directly impact our students, creating new and vibrant learning opportunities in the math and science fields.” This is an especially exciting gift for the school as it represents a significant investment from a young alumnus. “As we look ahead and prepare to take steps forward in strengthening our curriculum offerings, it is so powerful to know that we have the support and enthusiasm of folks like David and Kate alongside us,” says T.J. Locke, Episcopal Academy’s Greville Haslam Head of School. “To witness a young couple, an alumnus, making this kind of investment in the school is inspiring. It buoys us and gives me great confidence in the future of our school.”

“We are particularly interested in supporting math and science at Episcopal because they represent critical disciplines for our future,” says David, the Co-Head of Global Credit at Citadel Investment Group, a Chicago-based global investment group. “Our aspiration is to facilitate faculty innovation that can be readily translated into the math and science curriculum, thereby exciting students, sparking their curiosity and creativity, and inspiring a culture of teaching excellence.” With this gift, David and Kate will support the development of innovative and creative teaching practices in the mathematics classroom as well as stronger interdisciplinary connections between math and science faculty. The fund will provide support for educators to explore new research and pedagogy around teaching and learning in math and science, and to interrogate the curriculum and program offerings to evaluate opportunities to enhance the overall experience and outcomes for our students.

As Episcopal continues to expand and enhance its math and science programs, additional funds to support this area are most beneficial to the school. David and Kate have generously agreed to match gifts made to the Fund for Innovation in Math & Science. “We want to create exceptional opportunities for Episcopal’s faculty and, in turn, its students,” says David. “We are eager to partner with other donors interested in making an impact in this area. Our goal is to support Episcopal in becoming a premier institution in these fields. We hope that our investment and the investments of others will help provide resources to advance this endeavor.” For more information about this fund or to make a gift, please contact Jen Fifer, Interim Director of Development, at (484) 424-1783.

2013, this Outward Bound program was endowed by Walter Buckley ’55 in honor of his wife, Marjorie. This fund ensures that generations of EA students to come will spend several days each August developing their leadership skills, learning the value of teamwork, and making lifelong friendships in the hills of North Carolina.
