81 bus cut back Doing their bit for Poppy Day by Emily Tilley The number 81 bus will no longer run from Eastbourne on weekends from May 18, instead all weekend buses will follow the 83 route. Currently buses on the weekend alternate between the 81 route which runs from Eastbourne directly through Petone to Wellington and the 83 which detours to Queensgate in Lower Hutt and then through Petone to Wellington. The timetable will essentially remain the same with the same number of services to and from Eastbourne, however services currently following the 81 route will now take the 83 route so that all services run through Queensgate. “This will give customers a more consistent weekend service,” a Greater Wellington Regional Council spokeswoman says. Weekday services will start at the same time as currently timetabled, however there will be some changes to scheduled times for their stops along the way. The changes have been made to better align the timetable with real time information. Changes will be made on the Metlink online journey planner at www.metlink.org.nz around the end of the month and printed copies of the new timetable will be available from 11 May.

It may have been pouring with rain, but Eastbourne Scouts donned makeshift coats, and took it to the streets on Thursday night, visiting Eastbourne Four Square, Brew’d, the dairy and Spices collecting donations for poppies for Anzac Day. Photo: Evan Cowley.

Residents’ Association needed in Eastbourne Eastbourne and Muritai residents are missing out on the community knowledge sharing and cooperation that residents in the bays north of Eastbourne have through their residents’ associations. It’s a gap identified by both the Eastbourne Community Board and police and something they would like to see changed. Community constable Dave Tweedale is in regular contact with residents’ associations. “They work fantastically - they hum,” he says. He says he is easily able to let people know if there has been any crime in their area and he regularly receives “a lot of good information”

passed on by the associations. He would like to see Neighbourhood Support groups for residents south of Windy Point so they can have similar knowledge sharing between community and police. Neighbourhood Support also enables communication between Emergency Management and the community during and after a man-made or natural disaster. At the time of the Christchurch earthquakes, Neighbourhood Support groups proved valuable because of their local knowledge. Last year the community board began working on the Emergency Management Plan which centres around communities helping

each other. It became obvious to the board that there was a huge difference in the connectedness of neighbours in Eastbourne and Muritai and the rest of the bays. Community board chair Virginia Horrocks says St Alban’s Church has a network that extends beyond the church community and the board is looking at “tapping into that”. Anyone interested in starting up a Neighbourhood Support group in their street can email nsgroup@xtra.co.nz or Constable Tweedale at David.Tweedale@police. govt.nz or Ms Horrocks at vjhorrocks@gmail. com.
