Stop the Stench by Ann Packer What’s that smell? Known to some as Stinky Corner, others have cruder terms for the pong that wafts from the Waste Water Treatment Plant on the main road at Seaview. One Eastbourne resident, fed up with the situation, has decided to do something about it. Francesca (Chesca) Haylock’s Stop the Stench petition, as of last Friday, had attracted 170 signatures, and drawn comments from members of the public about the smell that permeates as far as Point Howard. “But for me personally,” says Ms Haylock, who came here from London in 2016, “I work in the vicinity and drive through most days and when the stench is up, it’s an instant downer...it can really make my stomach churn.” She has even been outdoors at Junglerama’s cafe with her one-year-old and had to be reassured by others that it was not her child making the offensive smell, but the nearby waste processing plant. She notes that Seaview also boasts a Top10 Holiday Park and says: “If I were a guest to the area and I was greeted by the stench from our WWTP I’d keep driving to the next camp ground!” As someone who has never done anything like this before, Ms Haylock, also a design student at Massey University, is learning as she goes, doing a lot of research into what other local bodies are doing with their waste water systems, posting on the Eastbourne Facebook page and drawing the occasional unpleasant comment – much to her surprise. “I was rather taken aback – surely this is beneficial to everyone…?” she says. “But most support it.” Deputy Mayor and ward councillor Tui Lewis has been very supportive, she says,

Tumjal, a relish developed by James Hutton and Carol Camden, was picked up at the Food Show in Auckland. Since being stocked in supermarkets and added to My Food Bag, it has grown so much in popularity that the deli has had to start outsourcing its manufacture, and jars of the vegan, gluten free Tamarind relish are flying off the shelves.. Mr Hutton says it was a hit with locals from the start, James Hutton loves Tumjal, and so do a lot of other people. "always a good sign". putting her in touch with the right people at Wellington Water. “Seaview has so much potential. Seven thousand people work there! It’s by the river, the sea, Hutt Pa r k , H i k o i k o i Reserve, the beautiful Marina... not to mention t h e g ate w ay to Chesca Haylock. Eastbourne and Wainui, yet on many occasions it smells so terrible it puts lots of people off enjoying all that it has to offer. “I also love the idea of enjoying sitting outside a cafe at the new Parkside Development or Marina without having to decipher in
advance whether the wind direction will ruin the experience. Not to mention the environmental benefits to having cleaner air. It’s a no brainer in my opinion.” Help get the petition to 5000: https://www.petitions.nz/stop_the_stench_ cove_seaview_wastewater_treatment_plant
