FORM ADDIC A VLE

A student's life is c have responsibiliti schoolwork to acc must excel and av grades Higher edu enrolling in a colle doubles the difficu demands increase mental and physic p However, people studying in the field of medicine encounter this more frequently.

Have you ever wondered how many folds of struggles a student doctor faces? It can be said that the cliché, "College burnout is real, but at least I'm not a Med student" is true

This is accurate in the case of Dr. Kent Solis Vicente, who recently passed the Veterinarian Licensure Examination (VLE) He is an example of someone who had a rollercoaster ride before achieving his unexpected success, being in the top 3 of the said nationwide examination.

Dr Vicente is a resident of Angas Batan, Aklan, and completed his secondary education at Altavas National School. A son of a Barangay Councilor and a Teacher, Dr Kent pursued this journey without hesitation even though his parents weren't connected to Vet Med

Staying inside Aklan State University's premises his Alma mater for 6 years, the dreamer paced his high hopes toward the top

Dr Kent assimilated the knowledge he gained as a Veterinary Medicine student, as time went on while studying animal production, diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases in agricultural, exotic, and companion animals Little did he know that his level of commitment would propel him to be the top 3 board passer in the Philippines of the VLE 2022

Despite having numerous competitors from Universities and Colleges across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, Dr. Kent brought pride to Aklan State University and the Aklan province as well, as he put them on the list of topnotchers in the said Board Exam

Thus, Dr. Kent gave power to ASU's Vision, "Global Competitiveness".

Like any other individual, Dr Kent also had someone to look up to Dr Kent inspired himself to journey in the veterinary field because of his brother's dedication to the same expertise.

“My brother introduced me to Veterinary medicine I used to observe him studying in the corner of his room as he put in hours of pure focus and hard work to master his craft When I got to college, I emulated those values from him," emphasized Dr. Kent.

"Learn to love your field and course, but don't pressure yourself to the limit."

Moreover, opposite to what other dreamers would consider as their inspiration, for Dr. Kent, it is not his downfalls that pushed him to excel in his academics. His early interest in Science and animals led him to choose veterinary medicine as a career

He would draw pictures of animals because of his profound love for them. Thus, his passion for "studying animals" is what helped him achieve academic success. He sees this as his calling

Dr Kent graduated from elementary as Salutatorian But the humorous thing about this gentleman is that, despite being a topnotcher, he is not ashamed to admit that, like today's underrated youth and students, he once had a fondness for computer gaming

Dr Kent committed to skipping classes in High School and started frequenting in computer shops From then, he lost his interest in competing in academics. He thought that he had no ability to overtake other students He had low self esteem

When he got to college, Dr Kent almost got failing scores and grades in some of his subjects Yet he managed to graduate. He didn't graduate with any honors, and he also had no idea that the stars planned something greater for him; his flying colors will be more notable than many of those who graduated with Latin Honors.

MANDUYOGGAZETTE

After he graduated, he didn't waste any time. He immediately went to review centers to pursue his license Nevertheless, Dr Kent faced challenges that almost killed his dreams, including the drastic COVID 19 pandemic

Dr. Kent wasn't able to dodge the obstacles that the pandemic had thrown at him. It is the biggest challenge during his review. He experienced the most unanticipated and terrifying incident of a license aspirant, the postponement of him taking the exam

"The alternative online class was not suitable for me, since I'm easily distracted online. Also, the unstable internet connection got me so frustrated that it led me to cut online classes and pursue a temporary job which even delayed my thesis submission These series of mishaps and wrong decisions increased my self doubt which eventually led me to postpone taking the February 2022 VLE," stressed the Doctor

Luckily, he encountered good people that helped him overcome the worst days of his journey. His friends and family cheered him up since he developed constant diffidence. Also, motivation from his previous mentors enlightened him and amplified his hope Even before he took the exam, Dr Kent's professors and prior instructors recognized his potential and predicted that he would top the examination!

The examination day came, and Dr Kent did his best for his dream license despite his inhibitions. But even after the examination, he still doubted if he would pass the exam he just took He even prepared himself for another review because he was uncertain, assertive that he would not make it

The results came out, and someone texted him a congratulatory message. He felt relieved that he didn't have to review again since he had already passed However, Dr Kent didn't know that it is more than just passing the exam

Competing against various prestigious Universities throughout the Philippines, Dr. Kent Solis Vicente was more surprised that he attained an 83.80 rating, placing him 3rd overall in the September 2022 Veterinarian Licensure Exam!

Dr Kent brought home the bacon to the province and his Alma mater ASU, proving that Akeanons can compete nationally, both in intellect and skills. He was commended by several personalities in Aklan and was featured by a television network in the Province For Dr Kent, the greatest source of strength that made him persevere toward his dreams is no other than his family

Dr. Vicente is currently preparing himself for his career in the field he has chosen, still embarking upon the path he took The stars will line up, and he's going to be ready again for what's ahead

SYMPHONY SOJOURNERS: EUTERPE'S

ROAD

“Music is a moral law It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, fight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and everything.” Plato

Eight members, one coach, and a unified goal to have fun and enjoy the moment, that is what the Commission of Higher Education (CHED) Region VI ASEAN Songwriting Competition 2nd placer “Euterpe” wants everyone to know as they were interviewed in Kalibo Cable’s KCEx: Kalibo Cable Exclusive last October 7, 2022.

Ms. Monica Augustine Rentino, Euterpe coach, along with vocalist composer Marielle R Saballero and other vocalists: Mayeth T De Jose, Lea Marie N Alcaraz, and Kristella Jane Rodriguez, and editor videographer Bash Raibon De Juan was scheduled to have an exclusive interview with DJ Monsour Betero of KCEx

Aklan State University is no stranger to this competition, as it also participated in last year’s event and secured the top 10 spot

TO VICTORY

This year, the group had to start from scratch as recent participants had already graduated from the university Hence, Ms Mitch Rentino gave the heads up to Ms Saballero to scout for new talents, which she gladly accepted.

“I let her choose who her co singers will be so that she has chemistry with them, and I scouted for the instrumentalists,” said Ms Rentino

Every name has an origin story, but the group decided to follow inspiration from Greek mythology The group’s name is inspired by the character “Euterpe,” known as the muse for music

According to Ms. Rentino, they had 10 days to develop an entry for the competition. Still, in two days, they finished the entire lyrics and tune for the song

“When I received the theme last August 8 from Ma’am Mitch, I was excited and thrilled because the theme speaks of addressing the challenges together.

That’s why I was able to come up with the first verse already,” said Ms Saballero

Ms Rentino also thanked the all out support of Aklan State University regarding pre production and their expenses in traveling to Bacolod City, Negros Occidental Out of the many universities that participated in the event, their winning entry, “Kapit bisig,” managed to grab second place

When asked about the most important lesson they learned during the competition, Mr. De Juan said that their journey was not just about the competition but for the fun and memories To them, watching other universities perform and making friends with them was like a treat already.

“We prayed before, during, and after the performance,” shared Ms Rentino

“Life is like music; sometimes you are in tune, sometimes you are not, but what’s important is that you enjoy,” highlighted DJ Betero during the segment.

Despite the negative thoughts filling his head, Mr Viray remained faithful and persistent on finding the vehicle and fortunately, with the coordination of PNP Banga, barangay auxiliary, owner of the boarding house, and a good citizen, it was finally located at around six in the evening on the same day his motorcycle went missing He said that he is very grateful for their help and hopes that they will continue the good service

Nagatiis ako adlaw adlaw bisan imbis pambakae eun nakon it bugas ag suea para sa eskwelahan, gintipon ko pa para eang hay maihueog ako pag abot it baeayran,” he wrote on Facebook.

Various radio stations posted about his situation in order to help in tracing the location of the said vehicle. A specific Facebook post from Energy FM 107.7 Kalibo garnered almost 4,000 reactions and has been shared almost 2,000 times by the netizens in hopes that the motorcycle will be found sooner

As hours continued to pass without any sign from his motorcycle, the more he felt hopeless that it would still be found. “Nag flashback sa akin lahat kung paano ako nagsimula at mga hirap na aking naranasan mabili ko lamang ang motorsiklo,” said Mr Viray

Mr. Viray bought the motorcycle to serve as his partner in doing part time jobs. As the eldest among six siblings, he felt responsible for being independent and support his education in order to help with his family’s finances Despite the load of work in school, he finds a way to manage his time to work as a student assistant, deliver items from his small business, and be a distributor of a well known company. The money he earns from these is what he uses to pay for his motorcycle and buy his daily needs

“Sa lahat ng mga katulad ko na estudyanteng self supported, magpatuloy lang po tayo kahit ano man ang maging hamon ng buhay Naniniwala ako na matapos ang matinding pag ulan, sisikat ang araw Kahit gaano man karami ang problema, lagi nating isipin na mas marami ang solusyon. Maging huwaran tayo sa paggawa ng mabuti, at laging bumangon sa pagkakadapa God will provide everything once you believe in Him ”

Mr Viray is a testament that no matter how kind you are, life will still throw challenges at you. Problems are inevitable and it all depends on you whether to give up easily or to see this as an opportunity to learn and grow, but one thing’s for sure this is just the start Eventually, there’s so much more in store in this journey called life. May his story serve as a reminder to everyone to always find the courage to face challenges no matter how hopeless it may seem Padayon!

ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE

WHAT THE PUBLIC NEEDS TO KNOW

Antibiotics are drugs which have been extremely helpful in curing many bacterial diseases like tuberculosis, pneumonia, strep throat, and urinary tract infection since its discovery in 1928 However, an emerging threat in using them continues to rise in strains that are resistant to antibiotics Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is a global health concern that occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites

For example, there are certain antibiotics that treat bacterial infections but do not treat viruses. If an individual takes an antibiotic for viral infection, the antibiotic attacks the natural bacteria These bacteria are helpful in the body and do not cause diseases It can create an opportunity for potentially harmful bacteria to replace the harmless ones

When a person is resistant to antibiotics, they are more difficult to treat, may be sick for a longer period of time, may require more expensive health care and medications, may require different antibiotics that can cause more harmful side effects, and have a higher risk of spreading illness to other people. Some have already died from infections that cannot be treated by any antibiotics.

AMR in 2019. Additionally, AMR is estimated to result in 10 million deaths annually by 2050. In the Philippines, the Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Program (ARSP) was created in the year 1988 by the DOH to determine the status and development of trends of AMR to selected bacteria to selected antimicrobials In ARSPs 2021 report, 70, 951 people had antibiotic resistance in the country, a 15.23% increase compared to the data gathered in 2020.

According to the World Health Organization, the main cause of antimicrobial resistance is the misuse and overuse of antibiotics Taking antibiotics when they’re not the correct treatment promotes antibiotic resistance.

On the brighter side, AMR can be prevented or reversed The best way to reduce the risk is by only using antibiotics appropriate and as prescribed Even though antibiotics need prescription to purchase, there are still some who have their ways in order to have them. That is why AMR continues to grow as a global health problem through the years

AMR can also be caused by lack of access to clean water; sanitation, and hygiene for both humans and animals; poor infection and disease prevention and control in health care facilities and farms; poor access to quality, affordable, medicines and vaccines; and lack of awareness and knowledge The public needs to be more aware of the effects of using antibiotics which pose the greatest risk in young children, cancer patients, and people over age 60
