Letter from the Chancellor

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of Dwight,

As I enter my 44th year as Chancellor of the Dwight School, I have never been more energized by our students, alumni, and faculty. Dan Maren ’11 is taking a gap year before entering Stanford to make the School for Orphans he founded become financially self-sufficient by growing banana and papaya crops; Connor Boyd ’06 is creating a new internet company to support great teaching; Race Imboden ’11, Juliana Barrett ’12, and faculty member Lauren Willock are competing for spots on the United States and South African Olympic fencing teams. The most exciting part of my job is helping others chart their own meaningful journeys in pursuit of their dreams. Having the resources to make these dreams possible is critical to our work at Dwight. On that note, I am delighted to report that The Dwight School Foundation had another record year and continues to enhance the educational experience of every student. The Foundation’s Annual Fund Committee, under the leadership of trustees Marlene Arbess (Parent ’13 and ’15) and Ravi Singh (Parent ’21),

raised a record $1,706,680 from 639 donors. A major part of this total came from the Class of 2011 Senior Gift Committee, co-chaired by Audrey Zinman and Richard Goldman, which raised $650,495, including $400,495 of restricted funds to help us complete the Technology Research Center and Terrace. Another part came from a record 116 alumni donors thanks to the efforts of our Alumni Council and a strong team of alumni volunteers. Finally, I want to recognize trustees Susan Kessler and Richard Zinman who helped us raise $550,834 in capital gifts enabling us to complete Phase I of the brownstone renovation project. We are enormously grateful to all of you for donating your dollars, time, and other resources to strengthen our School. We will continue to explore ways to ensure a world-class education where children learn to use their “spark of genius” to build a better world. Thank you for your continued support on this wonderful journey. Fondly,

Stephen H. Spahn, Chancellor

Global Vision Dwight students traverse Mount Solitaire, British Columbia, as part of a research project to record lichen growth on the glacier. The trip, chaperoned by Dwight Science Department Chair Barry Gragg, was one of six international Dwight Journeys offered last year.

Personalized Learning Senior Ayyub Ibrahim’s "spark of genius" is fencing. Last year, he traveled to Azerbaijan and placed in the top sixty-four in his first World Championship competition - all while juggling the rigorous demands of the full IB Diploma Program.

Letter from The Dwight School Foundation Trustee Chair

Dear Parents, Alumni, and Friends of The Dwight School, It is an honor to work with our dedicated Foundation Trustees to ensure that Dwight students and faculty have the finest resources possible. The generosity of the Dwight-Woodside community has been inspiring. Our success would not be possible without the efforts of hard-working volunteers besides our trustees who have ensured the success of the Foundation’s various initiatives: the Annual Fund Committee, Senior Gift Committee, the Parents Association, and the Alumni Council. I also would like to thank the hundreds of donors whose contributions have enriched the Dwight-Woodside experience for all students. Susan Kessler

We are most appreciative of Chancellor Stephen H. Spahn’s visionary leadership and deep belief that every student has a “spark of genius.” Dwight promises to reach even greater heights in the 2011-12 school year. On behalf of the students and faculty of The Dwight School, thank you! Best Regards,

Susan Kessler (Parent ’10) Dwight School Foundation, Trustee Board Chair

Three Pillars of the DwightWoodside Community

Global Vision At Dwight, we encourage students to see challenges from a global perspective. As members of an IB community, Dwight students are participants in a global network of interconnected learners at over 4,000 schools around the world. Furthermore, in addition to our New York campus, the Dwight Family of Schools has campuses in London, Vancouver Island, Seoul, and Beijing. Community Service We aim to inspire and educate our students to take action to improve the world. Dwight students understand that they are members of communities on both the local and global scale, and they strive to improve and serve every community in which they are a member. Personalized Learning We focus on educating the whole child and firmly believe that we can cultivate each student’s unique “spark of genius.” Whether fostering an exceptional ability, designing tailor-made enrichment for talented students, or providing thoughtful guidance in the academic arena, Dwight values and recognizes each student’s gifts and talents.

Class of 2011 Senior Gift

Dwight’s Technology Research Center and Adjacent Terrace Thanks to the remarkable efforts of the Class of 2011 Senior Gift Committee, the Class of 2011 raised over $600,000 for the Senior Gift – the largest Senior Gift total ever! In addition to providing unrestricted Annual Fund dollars, this year’s Senior Gift will help fund the new Technology Research Center and Terrace, which is part of the 89th Street Brownstone Renovation Project. The Center will more than double the size of the current Upper School Library and allow approximately thirty more students to work independently during the day, while the Terrace will provide much needed outdoor space where students can work or eat lunch. The Technology Research Center and Terrace will have a dramatic impact on the School and will undoubtedly serve as a source of pride for both Dwight students and graduates of the Class of 2011 in years to come.

Parents Association Volunteer Opportunities

Back to School Evening — Volunteers hand out information

packages and register parents.

Timothy/Bentley House Halloween Parties — Parents assist

staff members in planning, setting up, chaperoning, and cleaning up after the event. Bentley House Thanksgiving Basket Event — Each November,

Bentley House students gather to prepare Thanksgiving Dinner baskets for families who cannot afford a special holiday meal. Parents supervise the preparation of the baskets. Book Fair — The annual Book Fair, which is held at the Barnes

& Noble Superstore (Broadway and 82nd Street) is an important school-wide event that helps us raise money, provide books for our library and classrooms, and buy gifts for family, friends, and ourselves. Volunteers help plan and publicize the Fair, obtain and distribute classroom wish lists and suggested reading lists, and act as chaperones during the event. School Uniform Sale — Parents are asked to donate their chil-

dren’s outgrown and gently used uniforms so that they may be resold to Dwight families at a very nominal charge. PA volunteers sort clothing and staff the sales.

Faculty Valentine’s Day Breakfast — On Valentine’s Day, the PA

offers teachers and staff a special buffet breakfast to thank them for their dedication and hard work. Parents donate food items and help set up and serve breakfast.

Skating Party — The annual “Skating Under the Stars” ice-skating

party takes place each March. Volunteers distribute skates and work at the registration table.

Safety Patrol Committee — The PA organizes and oversees an

after-school Parent Safety Patrol to increase street safety for students as they make their way home from school each day. By taking an active role in this program, parents help make the entire school community a safer and more enjoyable place. In addition to protecting school children on their way home from school, this program allows patrollers to get to know fellow parents. Safety Patrol is a valuable service to the School. Woodside Spring Fair — The Annual Woodside PA Spring Fair is a

wonderful time for Woodside families to come together on a weekend and celebrate the beautiful spring weather. Children participate in activities such as seed planting, cupcake making, t-shirt decorating, face painting, singing, and dancing. Parent volunteers set up and run each activity and help clean up after the event. Kindergarten Parents Welcome Breakfast — The PA hosts a

breakfast for new kindergarten parents to welcome them to Dwight and inform them about various opportunities offered within the School. Theme Evenings — The PA collaborates with the School to spon-

sor workshops and lectures for all grades on topics of interest to parents. The International Food & Wine Festival — The PA organizes

this yearly event to promote community spirit and celebrate our diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Parents, teachers, and staff socialize in a relaxed, festive atmosphere surrounded by cuisines representing their heritage. Volunteers plan, set up, and photograph the event as well as donate and serve food and drinks.

Volunteer Thank You Reception

The Dwight School Foundation’s mission is to bring additional resources to The Dwight School and its Woodside Preschool to ensure the highest quality education possible. In June, Trustee Chair Susan Kessler generously hosted a reception at The Lotos Club to acknowledge the following groups that play a critical role in supporting this mission: School Governors and Foundation Trustees advise and work in conjunction with the Chan-

cellor to think critically about the future of the School and the resources needed to implement its Strategic Plan. The Annual Fund Committee solicits gifts from members of the Dwight community to provide

support for student financial aid, faculty professional development, and other items which will enrich the experience at Dwight and Woodside, above and beyond what is covered by tuition and fees. The Senior Gift Committee solicits Annual Fund gifts from 12th grade families and earmarks

the funds for key items they have chosen as a legacy gift to improve the School. The Dwight and Woodside Parents Associations welcome and connect parents to the com-

munity, promote volunteerism, encourage attendance at school events, and help address parent concerns to support faculty and build community spirit. The Alumni Council and Class Representatives help identify and promote meaningful ways

for graduates to get involved with the School and stay connected with each other.

56

Community Service Lower, middle, and upper school students in the Greenhouse Club harvested fresh basil and tomatoes from Dwight’s greenhouse. “Delicious!” commented Chancellor Spahn after sampling the garden treats. Students delivered most of the produce to St. Paul & St. Andrew’s Food Pantry on the Upper West Side.
