Solar Power – Hot idea or hot air?

A

lthough most people have good intentions when it comes to being ‘green’, any incentive that ties an environmental initiative with a way of saving money is much more likely to turn those intentions into action. With the April 2010 introduction of a government scheme called FITs, solar power is exactly that combination and has become very popular over the last year. If you are wondering if solar energy could be a good choice for you, here are some answers to the most frequently asked questions.

What are the basic requirements for solar panels? The main requirement – rather obviously – is that the panels have maximum exposure to light. They are generally put on the roof because they won’t be blocked by objects, trees and other buildings. The roof should ideally be south facing and although it is possible to use a roof that’s between due east and south, or between due west and south, the further away from true south you are, the less output you are likely to achieve. Solar panels need light so less electricity will be generated on shorter winter days and although they will work on cloudy days, the performance will be reduced compared to a sunny day. Finally, although the north of the country naturally receives less sunshine than the south, they do have longer days in the summer. The north won’t be able to benefit quite as much as the south but it is still worthwhile.

Can I cut my electricity bill to zero? Perhaps one of the prime misconceptions about solar energy is that you will no longer have an electricity bill. Unfortunately this is not true as you will not be generating energy when it is dark, yet are still likely to be using it with your television, computers and even the fridge and kettle. Most domestic installations have little or no capacity to store electricity. It is recommended therefore that you make use of your electrical appliances during the day so you are using your own generated electricity rather than having to take power from the national grid which will be charged to your usual bill. For example you would use your washing machine, tumble dryer,

dishwasher and possibly the oven in the daytime rather than the evening.

What’s the government’s incentive scheme? The government’s Feed-in Tariff (FITs) scheme became available in the UK (except Northern Ireland) in April 2010. The scheme guarantees a minimum payment for all electricity generated (the generation tariff) whether you are using it for yourself or not. Then there’s an additional payment (export tariff) for the electricity exported to the National Grid. Tariffs are even index-linked so the income will hold its value for the entire life of your system. The total amount of electricity generated is measured by a meter in your property. But measuring the amount of electricity you are exporting to the grid is usually either not possible or not financially viable (for domestic installations) so in most cases it is assumed that you are exporting 50% of all electricity you generate and your payment will be based on that.

How much can I save? The Energy Saving Trust gives the following example of potential cost savings (per annum): Generation tariff £770 Export tariff £30 Reduction in current electricity bills £120 TOTAL £920. Installation size of 2.2kWp. Based on a tariff rate of 41.3p/kWp, export rate of 3p. This is a great return on your investment (typically 8 – 12%) and certainly higher than most savings plans. Of course the one little caveat here is that you no longer have your capital sum to draw on if money is

The Downton Directory.... Linking local people with local businesses | 5 a bit tight. You will have increased the value of your property, but it is unlikely you will want to sell up just to tide you over a short term budget shortfall.

What about water heating? If your water is usually stored in a cylinder and is heated by either electricity or gas, you could also benefit from installing a second type of solar panel which heats water. Unlike electricity which is difficult to store, storing heat is much easier and it’s likely you already do this anyway so that you can always have hot water on demand. You will need some checks made on your home water heating arrangements to see if it would be suitable.

Could I change my heating system over to solar? In theory yes, in practice no. The times when you need your heating are in the winter – less light – and at night – no light. If it’s a bright sunny day between May and September it’s unlikely that you will be running your heating.

What are the costs? Like any property improvement it does depends on a number of factors. If you are installing panels on a two bedroom home, it’s going to be a lot less

Local Solar Panel Installer Call or email for an honest, FREE home assessment

expensive than equipping a mansion. A bungalow – if suitable – may be a lower cost as the scaffolding requirement will be less. But a budget of between £4,000 and £14,000 will cover most standard domestic installations.

How do I choose who to do my installation for me? As with any other significant property work, choose a reputable company and preferably a local one. Ensure you have carried out some basic research on the technology before you invite a company to quote so that you can gauge if they are knowledgeable and that the potential returns aren’t being exaggerated. Ask for references from other customers in the area. Finally look for accreditations. MCS is a quality assurance scheme which demonstrates that the company is committed to meeting rigorous and tested standards and The REAL (Renewable Energy Assurance Ltd) Scheme is a sign that the company has agreed to abide by high standards set out in the REAL consumer code. Also ensure your installer is approved within the UK Microgeneration Scheme. For more information see http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/

Classic cars and veteran aircraft join Supercars at Wilton House For the third year running, Lord Pembroke is hosting one of the largest displays of Supercars in the country, at Wilton House on Sunday 14th August, to help raise funds for the charity of which he is President, The Salisbury District Hospital Stars Appeal. This year over 100 of the world’s most expensive and exotic cars will be joined by a similar number of classic cars which, driven by their dedicated owners, will travel to Wilton from all parts of the country. To add further spectacle and entertain the crowds this year, local aviator, Peter Borchet, will be flying a Goodwood Harvard in an air display over Wilton Park.

A working World War 2 veteran, this plane was used to teach Spitfire and other fighter pilots to fly. Lord Pembroke said “We are delighted to be hosting the Classic Rendezvous and Supercar Day. Previous years’ shows have been a great success and lots of money has been raised for Stars Appeal. This year the show will be bigger and better and we hope to raise even more money.” Dave Cates said “For many of our supporters, Supercars at Wilton House is one of the highlights of the year. Funds raised by the event help fund vital projects, like the new Children’s Unit, which go on to help thousands

of local families. We are hugely grateful to our President Lord Pembroke and his Wilton Estate team for their continued support through this wonderful event”. Classic Rendezvous and Supercars at Wilton House runs between 10am and 5pm on Sunday 14th August. Entry is £10 for adults, £5 for 5-15s. Advanced tickets and more details can be found by visiting wiltonhousesupercars.co.uk.

Wednesday 20th – Saturday 30th July 2011 at 7.30pm (no performance on Monday 25th July) Matinee performance – Sunday 24th July at 4pm Directed by Rob Praine Adapted with savvy showmanship by Ken Ludwig, Treasure Island is a stunning yarn of piracy on the tropical seas. It all begins at an Inn on the Devonshire coast in 1775 and rapidly becomes an unforgettable and eccentric tale of treachery and mayhem. The decks are awash with legendary swashbucklers and brassy female pirates. The mainstay of it all is Jim Hawkins with his youthful thirst for adventure, and the infamous heroic villain Long John Silver. Children’s Summer Workshop It’s easy to enter. Just answer the following:“The asparagus wraps below are made from filo pastry. Name ONE other type of pastry commonly used in baking” Email your answer to competition@downtondirectory.com and also give the name of the child entering and a daytime telephone number. One winner will be selected from the correct entries and then notified. Closing date is Friday 29th July 2011. GOOD LUCK!

Asparagus Wraps Ingredients: 1 bunch asparagus, ends trimmed Pack of filo pastry Garlic or rosemary flavoured olive oil for brushing (or use the lemon vinaigrette below) Parmesan cheese shavings You will need....... Saucepan ~ Pastry brush ~ Scissors ~ Baking Tray ~ An Adult How to make asparagus wraps.... WASH YOUR HANDS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

Ask an adult to preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas Mark 6. Ask an adult to help you steam the asparagus for 3 minutes until just tender, drain, refresh in cold water and set to one side. Unwrap the filo pastry and cut in half lengthways, cover with a damp tea towel to make sure it doesn’t dry out. Take one sheet of filo at a time, lay it out flat and brush it with olive oil, sprinkle some parmesan cheese shavings in a row down the centre and lay 2-3 asparagus spears on top so that the heads are sticking out. Gently roll them up and lay then on a greased baking tray with the seam underneath. Brush the tops with more olive oil and sprinkle a little more Parmesan over them. Repeat until you’ve used up all the asparagus. Ask an adult to put the tray into the oven for around 12-15 minutes until the pastry is golden brown. Ask an adult to remove from the oven and move to a wire rack to cool. Splat Cooking (Salisbury) tel: 01722 340640 Email: salisbury@splatcooking.com www.salisbury.splatcooking.net

John Glen MP will be holding surgeries on the following dates: Informal drop-ins - July Times and Venues to be announced Contact 01722 323050 to book. john.glen.mp@parliament.uk

Friday 19th August, ALL DAY 12 Brown Street, Salisbury

As I go about my constituency duties, I never fail to be impressed by the commitment of Salisbury people to participating in and working to improve their communities. The Localism Bill, which is currently passing through parliament, will, subject to approval in a local referendum, allow the will of the people to be the primary consideration in the planning process – turning the current system on its head. I am hearing more and more questions about the principle of localism, mostly from people who cannot wait to be able to take the lead in protecting and redefining their own communities. They ask me how it will work and above all, they ask me, when can we start? The answer is now! You don’t have to hang around waiting for us MPs to get around to passing a law before you start actively engaging with your neighbourhood. Decisions can be difficult to make but they are, without exception, made by those who participate with curious minds and open hearts – not by the apathetic. Amongst the most distressing moments I experience as an MP are the times when someone comes into my surgery to seek help when ‘the system’ has failed them. Sometimes I am able to write a letter or call up an official or professional and sort out the problem – either put right a mistake or get an answer that the constituent has not been given. I do not have a magic wand, more’s the pity, and I cannot always help but, the way I see it, that is not reason not to try! Parliament’s summer recess will give me far more welcome time to spend in the constituency and, as well as my usual surgeries, I am planning to get out to the villages for a series of informal drop-in sessions. Keep an eye out for me and, if you have any issues you want to raise – national or local - do come and say hello. I cannot guarantee to be able to help – but I will always do my best.

Charity garden produces first veg The Trussell Trust’s therapeutic garden is producing it’s first crop! The project turned derelict land next to St. Michael’s Church on Bemerton Heath into a garden where people of all backgrounds can volunteer, helping to grow fresh fruit and vegetables to sell at low prices to the local community. Salisbury foodbank manager Mark Ward says, “Gardening is very therapeutic so the new garden is a great place for our volunters with mental, social or physical difficulties to come and spend time. It’s also complementary to our foodbank project as it promotes healthy eating and is making fresh produce available to people on low incomes. Our long term hope for the project is that the garden will be a place where we can teach people how to grow their own food, making fresh fruit and vegetables affordable.” Local volunteers of all ages, abilities and backgrounds have helped to build the garden over the last year. Garden project manager, Angela Mould, who is a volunteer herself, says, “It is so rewarding to see so many people’s hard work bearing fruit - literally! It’s also amazing to see how thrilled the volunteers are to see the first

crops of lettuces, spinach, peas and cauliflower. At the moment we’re not producing large quantities but we hope the project will continue to grow. We need more volunteers for this to happen though - so we’re appealing for any green-fingered types to come and get involved.” Fruit and veg currently on sale at the Trussell Trust’s shop at St Michael’s Community Centre on Bemerton Heath includes lettuces, cauliflower, peas, broadbeans and spinach, with strawberries, gooseberries, courgettes, fennel, tomatoes and leeks coming soon. If you’d like to volunteer for a few hours each week either to help in the garden or ‘buddy’ with a volunteer who needs support, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Lizzie Abnett on 01722 427 111, or email lizzie.abnett@trusselltrust.org.

It’s that time of year again; the kids are off school and if you’re lucky enough to have a holiday coming up, there’s no better way to while away the hours in the sunshine than with a good book. Here we’ve put together a collection of new and recent titles to keep everyone entertained over the summer season, with something for all the family. Hothouse Flower by Lucinda Riley

Having suffered a huge personal tragedy, concert pianist Julia Forrester returns to the stately home where she grew up. Now undergoing renovations under a new owner, a hidden diary has been discovered which transports Julia and the reader to France and Thailand as she pieces together a love story from the distant past. Both funny and heart-breaking, there’s a real depth of emotion to this debut novel which won’t be quickly forgotten.

Artichoke Hearts by Sita Brahmachari

This is the touching tale of twelve year-old Mira, who is on the verge of adulthood and trying to cope with the loss of a beloved Grandmother whilst also experiencing a blossoming friendship which opens a new chapter in her life. Exploring emotion on every level, from love,

loss and acceptance to family, friendship and growing-up, this is a lovely book which every girl must read.

The Man who Broke into Auschwitz by Denis Avey

Perfect for Dads with a taste for a gripping true story, this is the incredible account of a British soldier who in 1944 marched willingly into Auschwitz to see for himself if the awful rumours were really true. Swapping places with a Jewish inmate, Denis Avey witnessed the horrors of the camp as well as the final Death March. Here he recounts his heartbreaking experience with both courage and wisdom.

War Horse by Michael Morpurgo

The worldwide success of this story confirms that it is one that’s not to

be missed. Here we have an unusual account of the WWI trenches, as seen through the eyes of a horse, Joey. Both horrific and powerfully involving, the author has captured hidden tales of friendship and humanity whilst revealing the futility of war in a way which both children and adults will understand. This special edition from Egmont will make a great gift, featuring beautiful illustrations from François Place.

The Pile of Stuff at the Bottom of the Stairs by Christina Hopkinson

Mary Gilmour is a frustrated mum with too much to do and too little time. Life is passing her by, she’s missing out on quality time with her two young sons and as far as she can see, there’s one thing making it all twice

as difficult - and she’s married to him. Compiling a spreadsheet of ‘infringements’, from displaced used teabags to wet towels left on the bed, as well as a few positives to redress the balance, husband Joel unknowingly has six months to correct his score. Or else. Brilliant, funny and sharp – all mums/partners to untidy spouses will love this.

The Help by Kathryn Stockett

An utterly absorbing, deeply moving tale which delves into 1960s America and the story of the black maids who raised white children whilst dealing with ongoing discrimination from a prejudiced society. The author creates some truly wonderful characters in her presentation of ‘the other side to Gone with the Wind’. Inspirational, beautifully written and sincere - you won’t be able to put it down.

Some Golden Rules for

Landlords & Tenants •

Read important documents such as tenancy agreements and terms of business carefully; never sign anything you don’t understand, always ask questions and seek advice. Don’t have unreasonable or unrealistic expectations. If in doubt about what to do, or your obligations or responsibilities in any particular circumstances that arise you must communicate and seek clarification from an ARLA (Association of Residential Letting Agents) qualified Letting Agent. Confirm important issues in writing and ensure you always keep a copy.

TECH SPEC

If you’ve ever scoured the streets of a strange city trying to find a cash machine, found yourself hopelessly lost after taking a wrong turn or wished you knew even a few words of another language, you’ll know that travelling isn’t always easy. Help is at hand, or rather in your pocket: with a few well chosen apps, your smartphone can be the perfect travel companion.

The smartphone apps that transform travel

Smartphone apps aren’t just for Facebooking, Tweeting and playing Angry Birds: they can transform the way you travel, too. Some of them concentrate on the nuts and bolts - how to get there, whether your flight is delayed, where the British Embassy is - and others on the bigger picture, with guides to the most interesting attractions and best hotels. Some apps do both, telling you about interesting things and then using GPS and maps to guide you there. Before we get app happy, two quick warnings: remember your charger location-based apps drain batteries very quickly - and watch out for roaming fees. Some apps need an internet connection to function, and you may incur pricey mobile data charges when you use them. On the nuts and bolts side there’s Flight Times UK (iPhone), which you can use to see if your flight into or out of the UK has been delayed; Accuweather (iPhone and Android) for long-term weather forecasts; Tripadvisor (iPhone app, or via your phone’s web browser) to find hotels, flights and restaurants and to browse users’ reviews before you book; and a wide range of

GPS applications ranging from Android’s free Google Maps to the excellent (and battery-killing) TomTom Europe for iPhone. While most travel apps are free or just a few pounds, TomTom’s European apps are £42.99 for Eastern Europe, £52.99 for Western Europe and £69.99 for all of Europe. Some of the best travel apps come from the Lonely Planet stable (www. lonelyplanet. com/uk). It’s iPhone and Nokia city guides tell you everything you could possibly want to know about your destination and make good use of maps, while Android users can take advantage of Compass, pictured above a cityspecific augmented reality app for destinations including Paris, Seoul and London. Compass enables you to point your phone’s camera at something and see relevant information, such as the best nearby sights or restaurants. Lonely Planet also provides phrasebooks for Nokia, Android and iPhone users. Compass isn’t the only augmented reality app: Wikitude (for iPhone,

Android and some Nokia devices) overlays information on real-world footage, so for example you can download an overlay showing you where the nearest Starbuck’s is; Etips City Guides (iPhone) use augmented reality to show places of interest; and Metro AR Pro (iPhone) shows you where the nearest tube or metro stations are. Some apps can act as translators too. Google Goggles (iPhone and Android) can take a photo of a menu or sign in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish and translate it into English, while the Google Translate app (Android and iPhone) can translate written text between 57 different languages, read the results aloud in 23 languages and translate spoken words in 15 languages. And then there’s Word Lens (iPhone) - pictured here, which can recognise text and replace it in real time - so if you point your phone at a menu, sign or billboard, you’ll see the text change from Spanish to English immediately. It’s one of the most extraordinary things we’ve ever seen, and makes us feel like we’re living in the future.

CHEAP Convertibles The sun may have only been out for a little bit, but with the sunburn and the smell of barbecues comes that annual hankering for a cheap convertible. There’s nothing quite like a spot of top-down motoring when the temperature manages to haul itself into double figures – and the good news is it won’t have to cost you a second mortgage. Here, we delve into the online classifieds to find you five bargain summer sizzlers that you can put on your drive for less than £2,000. Just remember to save some cash for the Factor 50… Mazda MX-5, from £780 The MX-5 is a perennial soft-top favourite and rightly so. It’s been around for 21 years now which means there are plenty of cheaper examples knocking about. Our £2,000 budget can get a well-looked after original model, not an import, with relatively low mileage. The Mazda is brilliant to drive, cheap to run and repair and the perfect entry into convertible ownership. Saab 9-3 Convertible, from £850 Yes, you read that right. Saab 9-3 Convertibles can be had for under £1,000. That’s a huge amount of car for the money. You’ll be able to seat four in comfort, it’s built like a tank and will go on forever. And that’s handy because for this money you’re looking at a 150,000-miler plus. We found one with 180k, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol lump, service history, tax and MOT for six months at £850 on Auto Trader. Be quick as we’re tempted ourselves… Fiat Barchetta, from £999 This has to be the cheapest way into Italian twoseater soft-top ownership. The little Barchetta only comes in left-hand drive, which helps bring values

down. If you can live with that, you’ll be rewarded with a cracking drive, good looks and a zesty 1.7-litre engine. Some drivers will find the cabin a little cramped, but you’ll soon forget that when you’re blasting along country lanes with the top down. A 1998 model with 50,000 miles and service history can be found for £2,000. Audi A4 Cabriolet, from £2,000 You’ll have to hunt pretty hard, but Audi A4 Cabriolet models do occasionally crop up within this price bracket. That might mean looking in the depths of winter when the last thing people want is a soft-top, but canny buyers will be rewarded for their efforts. The A4 is solid, well packaged and usually comes with a high spec. For this money you’ll find a tired petrol model with intergalactic mileage but, have it looked at by an independent, and you could be onto a winner. Mercedes SLK, from £2,295 Ok, so it might be a little over our budget but we think with a little hard negotiating you could pick up an SLK for under £2k. We spotted an R-reg model in black with 120k miles, 6 months tax and four months MOT at a dealer for £2,295 ono – easily negotiable within budget. The Mercedes is a timeless design, has a folding metal roof and, although not the quickest, is still great to drive. By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

CALLING all DOGS..... It’s time to step up to the challenge!

F

amilies looking for a fun day out this summer should know about the annual Dogs Trust Salisbury Open Day & Fun Dog Show on Sunday, 7 August. It’s a fantastic day out for all the family – dogs included! – with loads of activities and attractions, and this year guests will have a chance to be part of a Guinness World Record! The Dogs Trust Open Day is the biggest fun dog show in the area, with 15 classes including Waggiest Tail, Biscuit Race, and Best Child Handler. Other dog-focussed attractions at the event include Have-a-Go Agility, Doggy Dash & Scurry, and more. But there’s plenty to do for the two-legged members of the family as well, with a barbeque, grand raffle, tombola, bouncy castle, pony rides, and loads of fun games and stalls.

“There’s no rule saying you can’t bribe your dog with a few treats!” This year the staff at Dogs Trust have decided to go for a Guinness World Record attempt, for the World’s Largest Simultaneous Dog Stay. All dog owners are encouraged to bring their dogs to be part of the big event, called the Super Stay. ‘Dogs don’t need to be obedience champions to take part in the Super Stay,’ said Leslie Gold, Supporter Relations Officer for Dogs Trust. ‘Dogs just need to sit or lie down for two minutes, with their owner at their side – and there’s no rule saying you can’t bribe your dog with a few treats!’

‘Dog owners needn’t worry about their dog letting the side down,’ said Miss Gold, ‘because hopefully enough dogs will take part that even if some are disqualified, we’ll still hit the magic number of 628 dogs successfully staying for two minutes.’ So come along on Sunday, 7 August and be part of a Guinness World Record attempt – and have a great time, raising money for a good cause in the process. The Open Day event runs from 11am to 4pm, in the field opposite Dogs Trust Salisbury in Newton Tony. Admission to the event is just £1.50 per adult, with kids and OAPs entering for free. The Super Stay will take place at 1pm, and it’s free to enter. For more information, please ring Dogs Trust on 01980 629634.
