Having a “bit of a DO” or planning to say “I DO”?

The White Horse puts the “DO” in DOWNTON Nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Downton, less than 7 miles south of Salisbury, is a Public House that’s well worth paying a visit. Think of rural pubs the way they used to be; family run, open fires, high back pews, a garden that nestles in Countryside. Offering traditional pub-grub and gastro food that’s predominantly locally sourced and always freshly prepared. With real Ales served with real care. And wines from around the world that are picked to both drink alone and to compliment the seasonal menu’s and Chef’s special dishes. 4 | The SP4 Magazine

The White Horse in Downton is all of the above. And more. Adjoining this charming Public House is The Stables; one of the prettiest private rooms in Wiltshire. Historic surroundings supported by modern facilities – WIFI and HDTV which can be hooked up to your laptop for presentations.

An Occasion to Remember The Stables is the ideal venue to host all manner of occasions, from weddings and parties to conferences, training sessions and business meetings. With a dedicated Event Manager at your disposal, your ‘Do’,

whatever it may be, will be planned and tailored to suit your specific needs. Recent events include a Wedding for 100 people, a Business Conference for 40 delegates and a Skittles Party for 20.... The Stables is also a great venue for Christening and Engagement parties – and Children’s Birthday parties are a big hit too. The best way to find out whether this really is the ideal venue for you is to call Morna Roe to arrange a tour (no obligation) and enjoy a free glass of wine whilst you chat through your needs. Now what could sound better than that? The White Horse Inn, 62 The Borough, Downton, Salisbury, SP5 3LY Tel: 01725 510408 Email: morna@thewhitehorseinn.co.uk

“A visit to the showroom will show you how to use contemporary or traditionally designed products for practicality and maximum effect

Style AND quality for your bathroom Terry West started Harlequin Bathrooms in 1986 in premises on Churchfield Trading Estate, west of Salisbury. After 2 years the company needed more showroom space and moved to its present premises in the Bourne Centre, Southampton Road (near the Tesco Superstore) where there is plenty of parking. The showroom is constantly being refurbished to echo developing trends and to show new ranges. A visit to the showroom will show you how to use contemporary or traditionally designed products for practicality and maximum effect. From their first visit clients are treated personally by the knowledgeable staff who will guide them through the choices available for their desired project. Harlequin Bathrooms can design and arrange installation of cloakrooms, complete bathrooms or shower rooms and offer a huge selection of baths, showers, taps, basins, WCs, bathroom 10 | The SP4 Magazine

accessories, tiles, specialist lighting, ceilings and flooring. Because Harlequin Bathrooms is a local family run business and not a branch of a National company they have a good rapport with the people in and around Salisbury and, indeed from further afield. In fact many clients return for bathrooms when they move to a different house having remembered the comprehensive and personalised service that the company provides. Over the years the team has developed a good working

relationship with Architects and Developers of prestige homes in the area and with Interior Designers who appreciate the care with which the staff treat both Designers and their clients. The company has also supplied fittings and accessories to shipyards for use in luxury private yachts and cruise ships (and in the past the QE2). Terry and his team pride themselves on seeing the job through to the end be it for a Cloakroom or all the Bathrooms for a new build or the refurbishment of a whole house. All their approved installers are trained in the particular ranges they are required to fit, and are neat, tidy and professional in their dealings with the clients. If clients have their own fitters or plumbers the company is only too pleased to supply all that is needed to complete the project. www.harlequinbathrooms.co.uk

Wallace & Gromit Stir Up The Nation For

“Great British Tea Party” Wallace & Gromit are calling on people across the UK to join The Great British Tea Party from the 1st -10th December to raise thousands of pounds for sick children in hospitals and hospices by enjoying a cuppa tea and a slice of cake. People from all walks of life are being invited to put the kettle on and get baking to take part in ‘Wallace & Gromit’s Great British Tea Party’ 1st- 10th December. In the UK we get through a staggering 16.5 million cups of tea a day, that’s an average of three cups each, proving the Great British Tea Party is the perfect way to get together with friends, family and colleagues

for a traditional teatime celebration that raises money for charity! Nick Park, creator of Wallace & Gromit and trustee of the Children’s Foundation, says: “A quintessentially British tea party is just my cup of tea and a great way to help sick and terminally ill children in the UK.” Since 2003 over 400,000 people have taken part in the Great British Tea party, helping children in over 25 children’s hospitals and hospices across the UK including Salisbury District Hospital. The Fundraising event hopes to raise over £150,000 and is

kindly supported by Yorkshire Tea. James Prentice, marketing manager at Yorkshire Tea, told us “When Wallace & Gromit first met Yorkshire Tea it was love at first sight. We have sponsored the Great British Tea party for 4 years and enjoyed every second! It’s great to be able to help raise funds for sick children all over the UK with Wallace & Gromit’s Children’s Foundation. We have lots of new and exciting plans this year and look forward to everyone joining in the party! “ Joining in the event couldn’t be easier - simply call 0845 600 1924 or visit www. wallaceandgromitteaparty.org.uk to sign up today.

Top 10 Tips for improving fuel efficiency We’ve all watched helplessly as the cost of fuel has rocketed over the last few years. Does anyone remember when it cost less than £1 per litre? Believe it or not, according to the AA, it was only a little more than two years ago in May 2009. Whilst we can’t do anything to beat the increases, there are ways we can minimise its impact. Here are our top 10 tips for improving fuel efficiency.

1. Check the internet. Sites like www.petrolprices.com are invaluable as they’ll not only tell you where to find the cheapest petrol near your postcode, they’ll also tell you the highest, lowest and average prices in your area. 2. Drive more efficiently. The experts tell us that it’s possible to cut 60% off your fuel bills just by driving more carefully. Don’t ‘warm up’ the engine, accelerate gradually (try to stay under 3000 revs), avoid sharp braking, drive in the correct gear and at your car’s optimum speed. Stay aware of your positioning and the road conditions ahead to avoid sudden movement. 3. Don’t fill your tank. Remember that fuel weighs a lot so find a balance between not having to go to the petrol station that often but not carrying a full tank either, rather aiming for between one half and three quarters. 4. Streamline your car. Again, weight is a huge factor in 14 | The SP4 Magazine

fuel efficiency. Don’t keep a buggy, golf clubs or other unnecessary items in the car. Take off roof racks which add wind resistance and force your engine to work harder. 5. Keep a regular eye on your tyre pressure. Check your car’s manual to find out what the levels should be and ensure they don’t dip lower than this. This will mean your car needs less oomph to keep it moving. 6. Turn off the air conditioning. Many cars have air conditioning on by default and it does use an incredible amount of fuel so make sure it’s turned off unless you really need it. Similarly, use your demisters and heated windscreens sparingly. However if it’s really hot do use your air conditioning because driving with open windows causes drag and is even less cost effective. 7. Avoid super fuels. Unless you have a highly tuned performance car, the difference isn’t noticeable enough to

warrant the extra cost. 8. Choose where you fill up. Again, check out www. petrolprices.com and plan ahead. Fill up at a supermarket station when you’re doing your regular shop, particularly if they have a petrol promotion running and if you have a loyalty card attached to the supermarket. Don’t be caught out with an empty tank when your only option is a motorway service station. 9. Combine short trips into one longer one. Cold starts are inefficient so plan ahead and try to do more than one errand when you go out. 10. Last but not least, turn the engine off if stuck in a jam. The general rule of thumb is if you think you’re going to be stationary for more than three minutes, it’s worth switching off.

Recipe

Chicken Dhansak

This warming curry is perfect for a chilly Autumn evening. It’s a fairly mild dish, but if you prefer something a little hotter, add a chopped red or green chilli pepper to the minced onion mixture. Serves 4 Ready in 1 hour and 20 minutes

Ingredients 1 large onion, peeled and roughly chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 2 tsp grated fresh root ginger 2 tbsp sunflower oil 2 tbsp mild curry paste (such as Patak’s) 500g skinless chicken fillets 100g red lentils 600ml chicken stock or water 2 large tomatoes, roughly chopped Salt and freshly ground black pepper Boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber relish (see tip), to serve Fried onions, to garnish

Method Place the onion, garlic and ginger in a food processor or blender and whizz for a few seconds until finely minced. Heat the oil in a large, deep frying pan and fry the minced onion mixture for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and golden brown. Stir in the curry paste and cook for 1 minute. Cut the chicken fillets into large chunks and add to the frying pan. Cook over a medium heat until no longer pink. Stir in the red lentils and stock or water. Cover and simmer gently, stirring occasionally 20 | The SP4 Magazine

for 30-35 minutes until the chicken and lentils are tender. Add the tomatoes and simmer uncovered for a further 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened and the tomatoes are soft. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Serve with boiled basmati rice and onion and cucumber relish. Garnish with fried onions.

TIP To make the relish, simply mix together finely shredded red onion with thinly sliced cucumber, fresh chopped mint, a squeeze of lemon juice and a little salt.

Rett UK Christmas Fair to bring Festive Cheer in Winterbourne Stoke Local craft and gift suppliers are to come together on Saturday 5 November to give festive shoppers the opportunity to choose from a fabulous range of fashion, jewellery and other crafts. The event, which supports the charity Rett UK, will be held at The Manor Barn, Winterbourne Stoke between 11am and 4pm. Providing inspiration and hundreds of new, clever and affordable gift ideas the fair will showcase the wares of 18 traders from all over the Salisbury area and is sure to provide plenty of festive inspiration for local shoppers. Among those confirmed are KiwiKate’s possum, merino, and sheepskin products, Mia & Ollipop Handmade at Home, All About Melie, plus Phoenix Trading, Forest Edge Jewellery, Forever Living, Little Lords & Ladies Children’s Clothing, Truly Madly Baby & Kid, and Salisbury Scents. Visitors will also be given the opportunity to snuggle up by the fire with local author Mandy Baggot’s latest chicklit novel. With ample free parking a hog roast, tea and cakes and demonstrations from Splat Cooking, the fair offers something for everyone. Funds raised from the event will go towards families living with Rett syndrome, a rare neurological disorder. The Rett UK team provides a valuable life-line for families across the UK

ensuring that they have access to best practice in diagnosis, treatment and care. “Rett UK receive no government or lottery funding and rely entirely on donations and grants,” says local Mum Helen Murray, whose daughter Evie pictured above (9 yrs) suffers from Rett Syndrome. “Fundraising events such as this exciting festive fair are therefore extremely important in providing essential support to keep the charity running.”

Local Charity benefits from

2012 Calendar

A recent family holiday to Africa’s Kruger Park has inspired a local lady to put her snapshots to good use and create a spectacular charity calendar in order to raise funds for Salisbury Hospice. The result is a stunning collection of 12 intimate photographs exclusively picked for each month of 2012. Nicky Fower from Gomeldon, who was accompanied on holiday by her husband Barry and mother-in-law Sylvia, told us she is determined to raise as much money as possible from the sale of the calendars. “They are all memorable images of a great holiday and I wanted to do something useful with them. I cannot think of a more worthwhile cause than the Hospice, we all know someone who has suffered or is suffering from cancer and the support offered to them and their families by the Hospice is fantastic.”

Croatia Sail to the Islands by Solange Hando

Croatia is fringed with over 1000 islands, an amazing sight, especially from the air - lush emerald green, long, thin or perfectly circular, bordered by white cliffs and beaches, crisscrossed by tiny ribbons of road that seem to lead to nowhere. One could spend a week or more sailing through this romantic seascape but stay in one of the glorious Dalmatian resorts and you can cruise for a day on a nostalgic galleon, dropping anchor here and there to explore a few of these offshore gems.

Mljet in the south is wild and unspoilt, two thirds of the island covered in forest. The name means ‘honey isle’ and some claim this is where the nymph Calypso kept Ulysses spellbound for seven years. A few fishing villages are sprinkled along the shore while part of the island is protected by a National Park. There are two lovely saltwater lakes, shimmering turquoise and blue, and shaded trails fragrant with pines.

best wine in the country, such as the red Plava and the honeycoloured Vugava, excellent with freshly-caught fish or lobster. The island has two small townships, Vis, where a medley of architecture reflects a turbulent past and Komiza, where boats head for the romantic Blue Lagoon on nearby Bisevo.

Also accessed from Dubrovnik is the Elaphite archipelago, a haven of pine forests and olive groves. Only three of the islands are inhabited, including Lopud, famous for sands, rare in Dalmatia, and Kolocep, barely 300 residents but claiming seven pre-Romanesque churches.

Bol is a pretty little town with red roofs and white walls nestling around the harbour. It’s a couple of miles to the beach, by land train or on foot, along a shaded promenade where souvenir stalls sell lace and Brac stone turned into clocks or Havr greets you with the fairytale town of Jelsa, all donkey and cycle candle holders. Finally you reach the long broad spit of the Golden rides, fishing nets drying in the alleyways, rose gardens, sunflowers, Cape, jutting out into the sea, a favourite spot for windsurfers waterside restaurants and pastelhued Venetian palaces dipping their and sun worshippers. The pebbles are as white as the stone and the toes in the sea. The fragrance of water is beautifully clear but in the lavender lingers on the square and distance the galleon beckons, ready now and then a whiff of Croatian folklore echoes under the parasols. to conclude the cruise in time for a It’s well worth leaving the crowds perfect Adriatic sunset.

Slightly further out into the Adriatic, Vis is the last inhabited Croatian island before Italy, with mountains rising to nearly 2000 feet and vineyards spreading in fertile valleys. Set in central Dalmatia, Vis boasts some of the 30 | The SP4 Magazine

Of course, you could spend a whole day sailing through this enchanting maze without landing at all, gazing at dolphins pirouetting in the waves and rugged mountains towering on the mainland, but when the boat approaches Hvar, even the most jaded traveller is keen to explore.

to wander through the lanes for a glimpse of local life and to the chapel on the hillock for the breath-taking panorama. From the resort of Baska Voda, it’s just under two hours to Hvar but the return trip includes a stop on Brac, the largest island in central Dalmatia, world famous for the local stone used to build the White House in Washington.
