We have nearly survived summer! The monsoons have arrived and provided a nice interruption to the sunny, blazing hot days (only locals will fully appreciate that statement). On August 3, Thursday evening, storms rolled into the Valley of the Sun from multiple directions.

High winds, from the east, rain from the north and a dust cloud from the south all collided leaving a mess in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa.

Here at Dobson Ranch, some residents were without power for four hours. Trees were uprooted in yards damaging cars, walls and homes. The City of Mesa responded quickly to clear large trees from roadways. City staff were working until 3am and started again Friday at 11am.

Early Friday morning, residents or hired landscapers were clearing the debris from yards. Dobson staff was also hard at work to clear pathways, removing large trees from common areas and streets. Early Saturday morning, around 1am, another storm came through. It did not leave as much damage as the one did the day before. Due to back to back storms, Dobson Ranch staff worked Saturday and Sunday so that residents could enjoy the common areas over the weekend.

While I was touring the community Thursday night and again on Friday, it was nice to see residents helping each other. These actions from residents, City of Mesa and staff make Dobson Ranch a great place to live.

For the past two months, the City of Mesa has been sprucing up Dobson Road south of Baseline. Hopefully you were able to take a moment and check out the landscaping work, as mentioned in last months’ article, before the storm. It looked to be just about completed and we were thrilled with the outcome.

Regardless of the storm, thank you to the City of Mesa for adding trees back to this area, what a fantastic addition, making for a beautiful drive through Dobson Ranch.

This summer, La Casita has been a water drop-off location for the 2017 Mesa Hydration Campaign. Thus far, the campaign has been a success! Thank you to all the Dobson Ranch residents who have generously participated…combined, the Association and residents have donated over 5,800 bottles of water thus far!

The program continues through September 15, there is still time to donate and help the Campaign reach their goal of 500,000 bottles.

The keyless entry system conversion, replacing homeowner keys to access certain common areas, is well underway. The first opportunity to get a fob and / or smartphone application will be here at La Casita in the Grande room on Saturday September 30 from 10 am to 2 pm and again Thursday October 5 from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Once the hardware installation is complete there will be a transition period in which both the keyless entry system and the homeowner key will function.

Enjoy what remains of summer! Don’t miss our front page featured event, the Annual Golf Tournament. The Golf Tournament is scheduled for Saturday September 23; the tournament always provides friendly competition and great prizes.

The July 20 Board of Directors meeting was canceled. Summer is typically a slow time for Association business and July or August meetings have often been canceled in past years.

Although the Board did not meet, many activities around Dobson Ranch continued. The Youth Summer Camp at La Casita (Camp Explore) was a great success with a full enrollment of kids ages 6-12 enjoying a different theme each week, along with the variety of field trips and guest speakers.

On July 14, dozens of Ranch residents (and seemingly hundreds of children!) enjoyed the annual ice cream social at La Casita.

Recreation staff was kept busy scooping out ice cream, while residents huddled under the shade canopies. Swim lessons for all age groups have been conducted at the Saratoga Recreation Center.

The Retirees Club is pretty quiet during the summer but pickleball continues on various days at the Los Altos courts.

Various Board Committees have been busy, along with Association staff, in planning or implementing several major projects, including the new electronic fob access system, updating our governing documents, and planning various capital projects (new or expanded boat facilities on Lakes 1 and 7, new patio area at La Casita, and possibly permanent restrooms at Laguna Park).

Further details on these projects are forthcoming.

On a personal note, I am honored to have been appointed by the Mesa City Council to serve on the Imagine Mesa Advisory Committee along with fifteen other community representatives.

Imagine Mesa is a new city-wide effort to solicit resident input regarding Mesa’s future. With an emphasis on social media and community meetings, all residents are encouraged to visit the website ImagineMesa.com to provide ideas, suggestions or thoughts in five general areas: Mesa at Play; Mesa at Home; Mesa at Work; Mesa Leading Innovation; and Mesa’s Green Future.

We will have a presentation on this exiting program at the August 17 Board meeting with a summary in the September Roundup. All residents are encouraged to attend the Board meeting and to participate in the grass roots effort to plan Mesa’s future.

Remember, during the monsoon season, keep your pets safe, stay hydrated, and watch out for those haboobs!

School has started and Fall is just around the corner…. Really?!?

We still have a bit of heat, sunburn, and sunshine to deal with, but no matter what season it is or what the weather holds in store, Dobson Ranch has activities, events, classes and amenities that can be enjoyed any time of the year. Check out the recreation section in this issue and the calendar on the back page with all the details.

The next big event coming up is the annual Dobson Ranch Golf Tournament on September 23. This is always a sold-out event so register soon. Sponsorships are available too. See all the details in this issue of the Ranchers’ Roundup or call 480-831-7464.

Need a breath of fresh air? How about a stroll along one of the lovely lake paths? The lakes at Dobson Ranch are one of the great amenities that can be enjoyed year-round. And don’t forget… if you need to keep cool, the pools are open for a refreshing dip.

THINGS TO KNOW

We find all kind of things in our lakes. I have lost a pair of glasses, other people have lost propellers, batteries and other interesting items. There is even a mysterious safe somewhere with a hoard of gold. No monsters, though.

The majority of what we find when cleaning the lake are natural things that drop into the lake from the many trees that line their shores.

Quite often one will see an alligator head floating just above the surface.

Actually, it is a palm frond base that floated free. Given time these flotsam will sink to the bottom.

Lots of not-so-natural jetsam does find its way into the lakes – including plastic bits and pieces, bags, cups, fishing line, bobbers, lures and even soccer field markers. One of the Ranch maintenance staff makes the rounds each morning cleaning the screens at the end of each lake.

Then there are the unwanted invasive species that are lurking not far from our shores. Weeds are always a problem; to control natural and invasive weeds we use fish to eat them. When fish alone cannot deal with the weeds we resort to chemicals, such as dye, to reduce photosynthesis.

Zebra and quagga mussels present a much more serious problem. So far, they have not reached the Lakes of Dobson Ranch, but they are in the CPA and SRP canals. Those mussels are more likely to reach our lakes via a boat not properly cleaned after being used in one of the other Arizona lakes.

Remember, water makes living in the desert possible - make the best of it and help keep the lakes clean.

BOARD MEETING Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? You can do all that at Dobson Association Board of Directors meetings. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at 7 pm at La Casita in the Grande room. The next dates are August 17 and September 21. All members are encouraged to attend.

2017 Assessments

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2017. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association Administration or Recreation departments. Please be sure to include your account number when remitting your payment. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and one-time payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www. dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Once logged in, select the one-time payment or auto payment option. If setting up automatic recurring payments, click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you have set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2017.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Resident Recipe

The recipes from Dobson Ranch residents are the best. Here is an easy frittata from Terry Long. You might even have all the ingredients on hand to put this together. Enjoy!

Spinach-Mushroom Frittata 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon butter ½ large white onion, thinly sliced ½ teaspoon kosher salt, divided 8 ounces fresh mushrooms, thinly sliced 8 large eggs ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese 3 tablespoons whole or low-fat milk ¼ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 10 ounces frozen spinach, thawed Preheat oven to 350 degrees with rack in in center of oven. Heat oil and butter in a 10-inch non-stick ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Add onion and ¼ teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring frequently until onion starts to soften and brown, about 5 minutes. Add mushrooms and cook, stirring often, until softened and all liquid has evaporated 8 to 10 minutes.

While onions and mushrooms cook, whisk together eggs, cheese, milk, pepper, and remaining ¼ teaspoon salt in a medium bowl; set aside.

Squeeze out excess water from thawed spinach. Add spinach to onion-mushroom mixture in skillet. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until spinach is heated through. Remove from heat.

Add egg mixture; gently stir until combined. Sprinkle with additional cheese, if desired. Bake in oven until frittata is golden brown and center is set, 15 to 18 minutes. Serves 4 to 6.

It’s hard to believe with the temperatures in the 100’s that fall is just around the corner. That means the weather should be cooling off (hopefully), football is starting (Go Packers) and Dobson Ranch is kicking off our upcoming fall events. We will start the season right with our 13th Annual Golf Tournament. Are there any golfers out there? The Golf Tournament event is Saturday, September 23rd at Dobson Ranch Golf Course. We are offering a Fall Break Camp for ages 6-12 year olds Monday-Friday October 9-13th at Saratoga Recreation Center. Lastly, this is just a reminder our summer hours will end on Labor Day, September 4th. Dobson Pickleball has not yet experienced a “rainout” of regular play, but we all know it’s coming. Due to changing court conditions and occasional scheduling issues that arise, pickleball enthusiasts really need to be on our email list and check it regularly before coming out.

That said, we continue to get a lot of play in, and our Monday morning “Inter-Club” Sessions at 7am in particular provides some diverse and excellent competition with players from other pickleball communities around the East Valley. For the time being, Saturdays at 7 am is probably the best time if there are beginners that want to come out and get oriented to the sport, although Tuesday evenings at 7pm is another option.

Remember, our Los Altos Courts are provided by the Dobson Association for members and their guests, and playing time is not limited to our published group-play hours. Another great benefit of homeownership in Dobson Ranch!

Boat Permits and Fishing License Information It’s always a great time for fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch.

Fishing licenses are required (catch and release PLE only) and boat permits are required for all EXAM watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Basic and simple modifications in behavior, posture, thoughts and habits in order to keep your stress level under control when you are under pressure during a match. Here are a few tips on how to reduce your feelings of stress during play 1. Complete one simple to do task.

Time management can be a very effective strategy in order to reduce your stress. Completing one simple task like this can be refreshing and improve your overall attitude.

2. Slow things down.

Taking a few minutes to reflect and slow down when feeling overwhelmed, talking slower and more clearly. This will help you to become less anxious and make sure you breathe when you talk.

People who are overly stressed tend to not speak clearly and clearing your mind of clutter will allow you to become more in control of the situation.

3. Posture.

Make sure you do a posture check. Hold your head and shoulders upright to avoid any type of muscle or joint pain. Good posture will also help you to maintain energy and confidence.

4. Refuel and Recharge at the days end.

Plan something relaxing and rewarding after a long day. Whether it be a book, going for a walk or a nice long shower. You want to put aside anything work related, family matters, housework, and have that brief time before bed to make sure you are fully relaxed. It is very important you always allow yourself that time to energize for the next day!

So, remember when feeling stressed out be sure to try these simple tips to help control your stress level and feelings on the court!

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info

Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center.

A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. If a rental request is within 10 business days there will be an expedited fee 2 times the rental amount. Reservations can be made at the La Casita Recreation Center and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

Retirees Club

This month I thought I would give you a little history on our club and what it does.

The Dobson Ranch Retirees Club was organized in 1999 when several residents decided to meet and find ways to make new friends, stay active and become involved in Dobson Ranch activates together.

From its inception the Retirees Club has fostered the spirit of good fellowship, volunteerism and social activities on Dobson Ranch. It has been a place to meet new friends and enjoy age appropriate activities of common interest.

General meetings are held the first Monday of each month at La Casita. Each year the membership of the club has grown as Dobson Ranch residents enjoy the camaraderie and functions offered by club members.

There is a Board of Directors for the club and the board meets on the third Monday of each month to plan events for future months: nominate new officers, suggest chairpersons and coordinate the activities of the club.

Dobson Ranch Retirees Clubs stays in touch with it members in many ways. The monthly general meeting brings members together to socialize and to share information about happenings on the Ranch and within the club, such as health and welfare of its members.

At the General meeting, an agenda is distributed about coming events and things of interest to members. Not to mention coffee and lunch is always served.

The Retirees Club maintains a database of members and email addresses. Members are notified by phone or email of special events or items of interest. So, if any of this is of interest to you or sounds like something you would like to participate in, come to our monthly general meeting and get involved, we would love to have you there.

Fishing Club

Our lake temperatures have reached a high of about 92 degrees.

A largemouth bass’s optimal active zone is between temperatures of around 60 degrees to 76 degrees.

So, the fish in our Dobson Ranch lakes have certainly slowed down, but they are still catchable. Feeding windows are tighter. Fishing in the early morning or at dusk or at night is best. Interestingly enough, when you catch a fish, they are really energetic and powerful, even in this very warm water.

It is important to get caught fish back into the water as soon as possible as they will quickly stress in our heat. You can catch fish on reaction baits like crank baits, but various plastic worm, grub, lizard, and senko presentations are best.

We dyed our lakes in the early summer to inhibit light penetration and photosynthesis, which could result in advanced weed growth. So our lakes which are naturally green due to suspended microscopic algae were turned to blue. As the water has been slowly moved through the 8 lake system and as the natural suspended algae has regrown, our lakes have returned to a beautiful natural greenish color this summer, and the weeds have been kept at bay. Because of the regeneration of lake oxygen during the windy monsoon season, we expect that very good water quality will be maintained through the Fall.

Have You Heard of Heartworm?

By Amber Balmer Veterinary Technician at Dobson Ranch Animal Hospital

The summer monsoons bring on the humidity which in turn brings on the mosquitos. Those little buzzers are more than just a nuisance, a single bite from an infected mosquito can transmit deadly heartworm disease to dogs and cats. True to its name, heartworms are a parasite that takes up residence in the heart and lungs.

The pesky mosquito plays temporary host, carrying microscopic baby worms called microfilaria and injecting them in to their next meal.

Symptoms of heartworm disease include: coughing, wheezing, lethargy, shortness of breath and decreased activity level. Treatment of heartworms is very costly and carries some risk. The most effective way to manage heartworm disease is actually by preventing it. Once a blood test is performed to confirm there are not any heartworms present, medication can be given that will kill any microfilaria your dog is exposed to. Please talk to your veterinarian about heartworms and your pet.

Mesa Community College Hosts International Rose Trials The Rose Garden at Mesa Community College, the largest rose garden in the desert southwest, is one of only two locations in the United States selected to sponsor an international rose trial.

The Sonoran International Rose Trials will display, in a park setting and for the benefit of parks departments, nurserymen and the general public, the value of modern rose varieties as free blooming, leafy, healthy and beautiful flowering plants. The planting of test roses at MCC took place in January, initiating the beginning of a two-year trial period. During the final year the General Public will be invited to participate in the selection of a special award, “The Peoples’ Choice Award.”

The unique climatic conditions in Arizona permit planting in late December to early January with the first blooms appearing in early April. Five to six complete bloom cycles may be observed annually. The 26 trails plants in the MCC Rose Garden are from two main introducers representing five hybridizers.
