Sense of Community

This month features Dobson Ranch’s sense of community. “Sense of Community” was defined in the 80’s as “a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members’ needs will be met through their commitment to be together.”

That describes Dobson Ranch… Members and non-members alike feel that they are a part of this wonderful community. Being part of the community does not stay simply within the boundaries of Dobson Ranch, it goes further.

It is always a pleasure working with the City of Mesa. Together we work hand in hand to bring community events to Dobson Ranch or to inform you of possibilities that you can attend. Pages 22 and 24 highlights our community events within the City of Mesa.

On the front page, bottom left photo is of Fire Station 203 that had a grand opening event on July 11. The photo of people to the bottom right spotlights Mr. and Mrs. Ken Powers, along with other community leaders from Dobson Ranch and the City of Mesa. The Powers are homeowners in Dobson Ranch. Susan Powers is the Association Vice President and volunteers her time on the Board, committees and events, all while working as a realtor. Mr. Powers was the architect for Fire Station 203. He and his firm designed the concept that the City of Mesa accepted and built. We saw many homeowners at the event including Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh. It’s exciting to see Dobson Ranch extending outside the boundaries of the community. The event kicked off with the City of Mesa Fire & Medical Department’s Honor Guard. There were many speakers, Mayor John Giles and MFMD Chief Harry Beck to name a few.

If you want to hear the Honor Guard, please join us at Vice Mayor Kavanaugh’s District 3 Pancake Breakfast on September 10. More information can be found on page 22. I hope to see you there.

Also on the front page, the two top photos, highlight a donation to the Hydration Donation Campaign. Left photo is of Board Members and Vice Mayor Kavanaugh with a case of water for the donation. It’s not too late for you to donate bottles of water. We are accepting bottle water at La Casita. You can find more information on page 24.

Outstanding contributions to our “Sense of Community” occur every day. I like to hear about all of the great achievements of our residents. Thanks to all of you who promote this feeling within our community of Dobson Ranch as well as within the greater community.

I called the July 21, 2016 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap…

The first item of business was displaying the “thank you” plaque the Association received from the Tempe Junior Crew rowing team.

The crew won 5th in the nation this year. The plaque has engraved on it: “Thank you for saving our season!” This surprise thank you was a nice gesture and we are glad the Association could assist a neighboring community while Tempe Town Lake was being drained for maintenance.

I recognized Board Member Stacy Holmstedt for her service as Treasurer last year. Thank you, Stacy, for all of the additional time and effort that goes into serving as Treasurer.

Reports were kept short in that there was a full agenda and a lot of material to cover at this meeting.

Under “Unfinished Business” the Board heard the sponsorship request for a Fun Run/Glow Run on Friday, October 14, 2016 at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course, which was first brought to the Board in June. It was decided to not sponsor the Run due to the Association’s Sponsorship Policy.

Next on the agenda was the Lake One Shelf Project. Craig Wilson, Water Management Director, has presented over the past two years the need to repair the north lake shelf at Lake One. During the last two years the repair was added to the Reserve Study and forecasted as a three-year project. The Water Management Committee reviewed and fine-tuned the process and we received an independent engineering opinion. The Lake One shelf maintenance was approved as allocated in the Reserve Study.

Under “New Business”, pool hours were discussed and it was agreed to extend the hours past Labor Day. Los Altos pools will remain open until 8:30 pm Monday through Saturday until September 30, with La Casita remaining open until 9 pm Monday through Saturday.

Master Planning Committee projects were reviewed and approved as follows: event signage, bollard lighting, banner signs, parking lot light replacement, benches, laser cutter, La Casita Grande Room wall paneling, La Casita panic bars, and Board laptops. Many of these projects are part of an overall branding of infrastructure throughout the Ranch to create a cohesive look within the community.

Arizona State law changes affecting homeowners’ associations were discussed and changes to the Association Bylaws were approved in order to be compliant.

Sweltering heat, sunburns, blazing sunshine and monsoons are all behind us. I feel fall in the air… well… only in the air conditioned stores promoting the Fall holidays!

We still have a bit of heat, sunburn, sunshine and even monsoons to deal with, but no matter what season it is or what the weather holds in store, Dobson Ranch has activities, events, classes and amenities that can be enjoyed any time of the year.

Since our thoughts are turning ever so slightly to Fall, start marking your calendars for all the big Fall events coming up in Dobson Ranch. You won’t want to miss a single one! September will usher in the events with the popular Golf Tournament held at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course on the 17th. Sign up early as this event fills up fast! Then October will continue to be a full month with the Fishing Tournament/ Outdoor Expo on the 1st, the Clean Up, Shred and Garage Sale on the 8th and Fall Break Camp starting on the 10th. Plan your costumes soon because the Halloween Spooktacular will finish out the month of October on the 21st. Look for all the details in the Recreation section of this Ranchers’ Roundup.

And don’t forget… if you need to keep cool, the pools are open for a refreshing dip. Please enjoy the all the amenities Dobson Ranch has to offer and I hope to see you at the next great Dobson Ranch event!

2016 Assessments

Your Neighborhood

Quarterly $138.60 Semi-annual $277.20 Annual $554.40 Assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $30 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter. Delinquent interest will accrue on any unpaid balance.

As a reminder, there are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Forms may be found on dobsonranch.com or picked up at the office. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Check payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association office. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through the mail or drop off.

3. Automatic monthly payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranch.com) using your bank card, credit card or e-check. Scroll down and click on the green “Assessment Payment Portal”, set up a New User Account or login if you are a returning user. Once you set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay. Set up the payment through the bill pay program with your bank. Please reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Half Gone

One day while on vacation I had lunch at my favorite mountain getaway, tucked away in the high Sierra’s. One of the menu items, Beef Burgundy, consisting of a large bowl of the most delicious lunch fare in this part of the wilderness. Half way through the bowl, I realized how good this meal was with chunks of beef, potatoes, carrots and plenty of gravy. Then it dawned on me that if I kept eating, this half-eaten bowl would soon be gone. I had reached that point where the bowl was half empty and wondered how to save this delightful meal.

That might be the same way we see our water supply. Water has filled our Valley with homes and jobs for all the people who have come here and now call Arizona home. We see that our supply of water is not infinite and is not being replaced drop for each drop used; it could soon be gone. Just one look at Lake Mead and we can see there is not much water left; Arizona will be the first to lose water if the water level in Lake Mead drops much lower.

We have seen this coming for a long time. Is something being done? The cities that form our part of the desert have come together under the banner of the Arizona Municipal Water User’s Association (AMWUA), beginning with the Ground Water Management Act. For 46 years now, AMWUA has worked to promote an assured, safe and sustainable water supply. The enclosed figure shows some the tasks taken on in our part of the desert.

The cities of the Valley have built an infrastructure that makes living here possible. This web of pipes that we do not see is vital to us. They have to be maintained to keep water flowing whenever we turn on the faucet or when our smart controller irrigates our landscaping. That is where water conservation provides the biggest impact. Conserving water reduces the stress on the supply of water to and through this web of wells, reservoirs, treatment plants, pumping stations and pipes. It allows the cities to plan maintenance and improvements.

Not wasting water is about more than just hoarding water; it is also about making all those components work that reliably bring us safe water day after day throughout the year.

Of course, I made the best of my bowl of Beef Burgundy. Remember, water makes living in the desert possible - make the best of it.

Mosquitoes!

Summer is the time for popsicles, flip flops, barbeques and mosquitoes! In Arizona, mosquitoes are at their busiest from May until October. Mosquitoes are always a nuisance and now more than ever, a health concern. The bite from this insect can cause more than itchy red bumps! Mosquitoes can transmit illnesses including West Nile virus, Dengue Fever, Zika virus, Chikungunya, and St. Louis encephalitis. Here are some easy ways to reclaim your outdoor space and prevent mosquitoes from living and breeding around your home.

Mosquitoes need stagnant water and as little as a bottle cap full for their eggs to hatch. The most important thing you can do is clear all standing water. Make sure your pool, pond or water feature is well maintained and chlorinated and not turning green. Investigate your property for any buckets, trash-can lids, pots, containers, potted plants, plant saucers, pet water bowls, bird baths, broken sprinklers with puddled water or clutter piles that might be trapping and holding stagnant water.

After the area has been cleared of any potential mosquito breeding grounds there are a few natural, chemical free ways to deter mosquitoes and send them on their way.

Most mosquitoes can’t fly through the small breeze put out by a fan, so an outdoor fan can be a good deterrent. A few squirts of dish soap in a saucer has also proven effective to keep mosquitoes busy and away from humans. Bug zappers, on the other hand, are not effective against mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are attracted to carbon dioxide exhaled by people and pets, and not UV light.

There are a few plants that can help repel those pesky mosquitoes.

It’s hard to believe with the temperatures in the 100’s that fall is just around the corner. That means the weather should be cooling off (hopefully), football is starting (Go Packers) and Dobson Ranch is kicking off our upcoming fall events. We will start the season right with our 12th Annual Golf Tournament. Are there any golfers out there? The Golf Tournament event is Saturday, September 17th at Dobson Ranch Golf Course. Registration has started at La Casita Recreation Center. Please sign up if you are interested in playing.

You can sign up individually or as a foursome. We also have our Fishing Tournament/Outdoor Expo on Saturday, October 1st from 7 am-11 am. There will be a kids fishing tournament, fun and prizes. Garage Sale, Clean Up and Shred is on Saturday, October 8th.

Before you know it school will be starting and your children and grandchildren will be looking for things to do during fall break.

We are offering a Fall Break Camp for ages 6-12 year olds MondayFriday October 10-14th at Saratoga Recreation Center. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table.

Adult tennis Dobson Ranch offers a full-range of programs and playing opportunities for ages 16 plus and ability levels. We focus on developing the complete player who can perform in any match situation at any level. Our tennis pro combines technical, mental and physical elements of the game to help build confidence and conditioning to ensure a positive, successful and fun experience.

Adult Learn to Play These 5 week classes, will introduce the social aspect of the game when groups of players come together to learn at the same time. To teach the skills of tennis to a class, tennis group drills have been formulated. Mixed double matches are played after structured 30min warm up drills to help condition the body for competition. Has it been six months already? WOW! “NO WAY”.

It seems like yesterday when I was first introduced to the parents and bright young faces of the Dobson Ranch community tennis program.

Coming into the program I had no expectations of the kids other than to make the program fun and exciting. Clearly structuring the program in such a way for kids to come and enjoy the many planned activities and games has created stand out junior tennis players in the program. Amongst the junior player standouts are those that have surpassed their own expectations of what they thought possible as a junior player. I will also say that many of the drop shots and tots are beginning to show signs of growth, which means moving day is coming soon for a few lucky players.

Our Aces Excel group has developed a hunger for competitiveness and the energy is obvious when class is in session. Maybe it’s the music or my fancy dance moves but for whatever the reason we are a happy bunch and it shows in the quality of our tennis and sportsmanship towards each other.

As I sit back and witness the aha moments of first time servers creating slice serves from a single toss of the ball and a slight tilt of the racquet my mind starts to create scenarios of tournament match play similar to the exploits of Ralphie in a Christmas Story. Let’s applaud all of our tennis players for the hard work and improvements they’ve made working hard on their games. Keep up the good work guys!!!!!!

This summer was another great swim season for the Dobson Dolphins. The team participated in several meets around the East Valley, hosted a patriotic meet with guest visits from the Mesa Police and Fire Departments, splashed and laughed at water fun day and all of the swimmers were recognized at the annual awards night. Boat and Fishing Information

The weather is heating up and it’s a perfect time for ple outdoor activities, like fishing and boating at one of the exam beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply). 2016 licenses and permits went on sale ple m December 1, so stop by La Casita at 2719 South a x e Reyes to purchase them. Prices are the same as 2015. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information please call the recreation department at 480-831-8314.

Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Information A one-time “complimentary” pontoon ride per property is available to residents. Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Dobson Ranch Recreation Department is pleased to announce an Outdoor Day event on Saturday, October 1, 2016 from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Los Altos Recreation Center located at 2524 W. Campo Alegre, Mesa, Arizona, 85202.

We are inviting local outdoor-related companies, businesses and organizations to be part of our event. Fill out the information below to participate in this event. You will be contacted within a week of returning this form for confirmation.

General Guidelines for vendors in attendance:

Must qualify as an outdoor related vendor. Unless approved by Recreation dept.  A 10 x 10 space will be provided to each vendor. A table and 2 chairs will be provided. Not much I’ll bet with the heat and all. Dinner night out was a good time for all of us to get together again. The Ladies had a good time at lunch this month, at Manuel’s.

Fish Club

The water temperature in our lakes as of this writing is 94 degrees Fahrenheit (F). Isn’t that close to boiling? Well not really, but just sayin’. Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius (and 212 degrees F).

But, it is hot.

We were fishing the other day and we could not get a bite, except for moving our lures aggressively fast. Now that is a bit strange, because above 80 degrees water temp bass reportedly slow down as the optimum water temperature for their metabolism is about 68 degrees- F. Fish are so unpredictable at times.

They can be shallow when they should be deep; they feed when they should be hunkered down. That’s why we fish- to figure out the patterns to catch them.

Speaking of patterns, there has been a pretty good topwater bite on our lakes for bass from spring through summer. This has not been the case in previous years, or maybe I just have not been keying on this lure and presentation so my data set is incomplete. Regardless, I have found that it really matters how you present the topwater bait. I went out on one of our Dobson Ranch Lakes with a guy who is a member of my Bass Club- Roostertales. In Roostertales, we fish one tournament a month on local and state lakes such as Roosevelt, Bartlett, Saguaro, and Havasu. (If you are interested in the Club, call me- 602-819-0622) My friend kicked my butt when we were throwing the same topwater bait in the same areas. But our retrieve was different. I was popping it and spitting it all the way back to the boat without pause. My friend would pop it ever so lightly, and let it sit for 5 to 10 seconds. Then the bass would hit. So- it just depends and it always depends on the way you present and retrieve your bait. Sometimes they want that steady retrieve back to the boat. A great rule of thumb for topwater baits like the Rebel PopR or the more expensive Rico is to “spit” it coming back to the boat, rather than pop it or “bloop” it. This sounds funny, but the spitting creates a more natural sound of baitfish on top of the water, rather than the louder bloop. The little things matter in fishing, and good fishermen do the little things that make a difference.

I am looking forward to the water temperatures reversing.

This will not happen until the day length shortens and we see several continuous days of air temperature below 100. In the meantime, we adapt to what nature presents.

Dobson Ranch Fish Club members are now starting to plan with our HOA the upcoming Fall Kid’s Fishing Tournament.

RETIREES SCHEDULE GENERAL MEETING The Retiree’s General meeting in September will be one week later than usual on Monday, September 12th. at La Casita. Labor Day is Monday, September 5th. As usual, coffee at 9:30AM and the meeting begins at 10AM. Lunch follows the meeting.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING The August Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, August15th at 9AM at La Casita. In September the Board Meeting will be on Monday, September 19th at 9AM. Both meetings will be at La Casita.

Help Your Furbaby Beat the Heat!

Now that we are experiencing summer’s full force, most people have retreated in to their air conditioned fortresses of solitude. But what about our doggies? Being cooped up inside without much exercise can sometimes lead to destructive behavior.

If they like to take walks around the neighborhood, early morning is best. In the evening, even though the sun has gone down, the sidewalks and pavement retain heat for hours.

Paw pads are not as tough as most people think, dogs are not able to sweat and are only capable of releasing body heat through their paw pads and by panting. There are several types of dog shoes that can be found online to help protect their sensitive feet.

Swimming is a great way to get in some exercise while having fun!

But just like children, watch your pets around water! The ‘doggie paddle’ is not an inherited behavior but a learned one.

Dog parks that have grass are another way to burn off some steam.

Try to go early in the morning or after the sun has gone down. Keep a close eye on your furbaby while you are there and watch for excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea or acting ‘drunk’ as these are all signs of heat stroke.

Grand Opening for Fire Station 203 in Mesa

Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign

A ribbon cutting ceremony was held July 11, for Fire Station 203, 324 S. Alma School Road replacing a firehouse that was nearly 60 years old. To set the tone for the event, the Mesa Fire and Medical honor guard presented the colors, accompanied by bagpipes. Speakers included, Mayor Giles, Vice Mayor Kavanaugh and Fire Chief Beck. Dobson Ranch staff members were on hand to hand out water on the warm summer morning.

“As our community grows, so does our need for larger and well equipped fire stations to serve Mesa residents,” Mesa Mayor John Giles said. “Most of all, thank you to the voters who approved both the purchase of the property and building of the station. Investments like these make for better communities.”

The fire station replaces the original Fire Station 203, 1340 W. University Drive, which was inadequate to serve the needs of current fire operations due to its age, location and size.

Dobson Ranch resident, Kenneth Powers, who runs the Phoenix office of Perlman Architects of Arizona, worked closely with team members and the City of Mesa to develop a design for the station that would fit the aesthetics of the industrial/commercial location and enhance the revitalization efforts in the surrounding area.

The new fire station has approximately 12,000 square feet, three apparatus bays, six dormitory rooms for firefighters, two dormitory rooms for captains, a Fire/EMS training/community room and an onsite fuel station. Funding for the project is from the 2008 and 2013 Public Safety Bonds approved by Mesa voters.

“The rebuilding of Fire Station 203 is a testament to how advocates within our City leadership and our elected officials aggressively respond to the needs of our community,” Fire Chief Harry Beck said. “Our Department, and especially the firefighter/paramedic crews working out of the original station 203, are certainly appreciative of the support and the ability to provide efficient service to the citizens living and working in Fire Station 203’s response area.”

Thanks to the generosity of the community, the Mesa Hydration Donation Campaign has collected thousands of bottles of water to help people in need, including the homeless and unsheltered, during the hot summer months. However, the need for donations is still critical.

Dobson Ranch has helped with the campaign by donating 4,000 bottles of water. In addition to the other nearby drop-off locations, Dobson Ranch will accept water donations at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes, through September 16.

The Mesa Hydration Donation campaign, which started in 2007, is a partnership involving the City of Mesa, nonprofit agencies and businesses to provide supplies of water to those in need. The water is distributed through the United Food Bank to numerous nonprofit organizations in Mesa and throughout the valley including Paz de Cristo, Mesa United Way and A New Leaf-East Valley Men’s Center.

New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning, is a peer-led, self-directed organization of over 300 members operating under the auspices of Mesa Community College, which offers the opportunity to expand your learning, increase your social resources, and opportunities to volunteer for the college and in the community.

Classes meet on the MCC campuses at Southern Ave. and Dobson Rd. and many other locations in Mesa. After paying $80 per year, a member can register for as many classes as their schedule will allow. A few classes that require materials will have fees collected in the class to cover the materials.

The next Open House will be on Friday, September 9th at the Downtown Center at 145 N. Centennial Way on the 4th Floor of the building from 1:00 to 3:00. Park in the Parking Garage on the 2nd and 3rd levels only.
