If you’ve driven down Dobson Road between Baseline and Guadalupe, you may have notice a lot of work due to lane closures, vehicles, and people working along the sides and medians of the roadway. The City of Mesa approved fixing the drainage, landscape irrigation, and to add vegetation.

At the bus stop just south of Baseline, the City of Mesa has fixed the drainage. When it rained, the rain water would not drain properly flooding the street, bus stop and the Association rose garden. The City installed a larger drain at street level and a box drain underneath the street. That box, drains into Lake 4 just west of Dobson Road. The City hopes that they have resolved the issue.

The City found major issues with the irrigation system in this area and steps were taken to overhaul the system. The City started working on irrigation along Dobson Road south of Baseline in May. Starting in July, the City will be working on the irrigation north of Baseline. The City is working on the irrigation in order to add 15 new trees and 280 shrubs south of Baseline. In the fall, the City will add additional trees and shrubs north of Baseline. Thank you, City of Mesa, for making the thoroughfare through Dobson Ranch look great!

As mentioned in Board President Frank Mizner’s article, the keyless entry fob program is underway. At the June Board of Directors meeting a keyless entry agreement and policy was approved (to view the policy please visit our website at http://www.dobsonranchhoa. com/governingdocuments/). The hardware is currently being installed at Association common areas (tennis courts, pickleball courts, and pools). Work is expected to wrap up by the end of this summer. Once all work is completed there will be a transition period with multiple opportunities for residents to receive a fob or smartphone application which will eventually replace the current homeowner keys to common areas. During the transition period the homeowner key as well as the new system will both work. Look for more information in coming months as we gear up to switching over to the new keyless entry program.

Have you heard about the new “IMAGINE MESA” program that the City of Mesa just launched? It is an interactive website for citizens to give the City ideas, suggestions, and solutions for a vibrant and exciting future for Mesa. Imagine Mesa focuses on 5 different areas of growth – at play, at home, at work, leading innovation, and a green future. The program was launched recently and runs through October 31, 2017.

Dobson Ranch resident Merry Bevill and Board President, Frank Mizner have been appointed by the City Council to be on the Imagine Mesa committee and will give a short presentation followed by Q & A, at the August 17 Board of Director’s meeting, at 7 pm, at La Casita. We hope you can join us.

I called the June 15, 2017 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap…

The first item of business was my President’s Report…the State Legislature is inundated yearly with bills aiming to regulate Homeowners Associations, this year was no different, 110 bills were introduced. Often the bills are a result of one unhappy constituent bringing their specific concern to their legislature creating bills focused on solving that one issue; when passed their impact is far reaching. Out of the 110 bills, three went to the Governor, one of which sought to eliminate cumulative voting; this bill was vetoed. The bill would have altered the way our Association votes for Board of Directors. The other two bills cleaned up language of laws already in effect.

Staff recently visited with an agent of the Associations insurance carrier. They walked the Associations common areas and reviewed policies; conducting a risk management review looking for any risk of loss.

The agent was impressed with the staff’s involvement and our proactive approach. The agent stated that the Association has great protocols and that he considers the Association to be a “low hazard property operation.”

On a City of Mesa matter, the city has appointed a new chief of police, Ramon Batista. Chief Batista was the assistant chief of police with the City of Tucson police department. We hope to get to know the Chief and have him attend some of our upcoming events this fall.

Finally, I would like to report that Dobson Ranch was mentioned at two recent city events. One was the kickoff of the 11th annual Mesa Hydration program. If you have not had a chance to donate water there is still time; we are collecting cases of water at La Casita for this remarkable program. We were also mentioned at the ceremony for the appointment of Chief Batista. We are thrilled to be recognized by the City of Mesa, reinforcing our continued relevance as an established community within the city.

Under “Unfinished Business” the Board adopted the Keyless Entry (fob system) agreement and policy. The policy and agreement were first introduced back in March, it went through various revisions, and was ultimately adopted with additional changes. La Casita tennis light timer replacements and additional funds for unforeseen maintenance which arose during the refurbishment of Los Altos Jr. Olympic pool and deck were also both approved.

Under “New Business” the following business items were approved: o Releasing of Laguna Village co-share monies o Los Altos dock gate and electrical o La Casita Grande and Chica room partition o Los Altos pool fence Lastly, the Associations’ 2017 reserve study was presented and accepted.

On August 21, 2017, a solar eclipse will occur. Solar eclipses happen when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in a straight or almost straight configuration. Astronomers call this a SYZYGY. Well… I sure can’t pronounce THAT word, but I can tell you that things are certainly aligned right here at Dobson Ranch and we call it FUN! Fun is always happening at La Casita Summer Camp! How about a dip in the pool? There are three locations in Dobson Ranch with pools! There is a pool at the Saratoga Recreation Center, 2345 S. Saratoga, two pools at the Los Altos Recreation Center, 2524 W. Campo Alegre, and the pool at La Casita, 2719 S. Reyes, has a great splash pad also.

In addition to the pools, the Recreation department has an array of fun refreshing classes: Swim lessons, Aqua Zumba, Water Aerobics, Yoga, Dance and more!

The amenities are here for you to use, so stay cool, have fun and enjoy all that Dobson Ranch has to offer!

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2017. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association Administration or Recreation departments. Please be sure to include your account number when remitting your payment. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and one-time payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www. dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Once logged in, select the one-time payment or auto payment option. If setting up automatic recurring payments, click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you have set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2017.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

What, Me Wash a Car?

I drive a clean machine; at least I like to think so.

Washing a clean car in Arizona seems like it should be a once-in-a-while task. Somehow my car seems to pick up every bit of road dust to be found around the Ranch. There are many ways to keep a car clean and there are many convenient car wash facilities around.

The first option is the yard, lawn if there is one. Washing on the lawn can be good as the water soaks into the soil. In this case, using a non-phosphate soap designed for washing the car is a necessity (Remember to move the vehicle to the driveway when completed). The last resort should be the driveway. According to the Arizona Municipal Water Users Association (AMWUA) washing a car in one’s driveway can use as much as 144 gallons of water, all of which will evaporate before it reaches a storm drain. Charity car washes are not much better in water consumption, but do offer an ephemeral benefit; the funds raised for the charity. The guidelines for charity car washes identify the type of soap used and require the use of on-demand nozzles; the ones that shut off when not being used.

There are several close-by conveyer type or pull-throughs car washes that do a great and fast job. One can sit in the car and pretend to be at Niagara Falls. There are vacuum cleaning hoses at the end to get the dirt off the floor mats.

How do these car washes stack up as far as conserving water?

According to AMWUA, washing a car at home does waste water, most of which is lost to evaporation. Washing on the lawn will save some of that water provided the irrigation system is made aware; not probable. Commercial car washes use water, but it is assessed differently. A pull-through car wash will use slightly more than 40 gallons of water per car washed. However, only 8 gallons is lost to evaporation. The rest is either recycled in the car wash or goes into the sewer. Like our homes, car washes facilities pay a waste water fee to drain water into the sewer system where it is recovered and is thus not wasted.

REMEMBER, ONLY RAIN IN THE STORM DRAIN. Wash responsibly, conserving water makes living in the desert possible make the best of it.

Now that the weather is in the triple digits, come out and enjoy your community pools and splash pad! Swimming is great exercise and being submerged in water is a super way to stay cool! Just a reminder that our new summer hours run from Now – September 3rd. We are open Monday-Friday 8am-9pm, Saturday 8am-9pm and Sunday 9am-8pm (Closed Holiday July 4th and September 4th). Our summer camp is in full swing and we are still accepting registrations for limited days if you are interested. Camp is held at La Casita and will run through August 4th. Camp fun is Monday- Friday 7:30am-5:30pm.

We do have a 5-week camp option July 3rd-August 4th and 1 week options available as well. Please see our ad in this month’s issue of the Ranchers’ Roundup for more information or call La Casita at 480-831-7464. For all you ice cream enthusiasts, come out and join us for our Ice Cream Social on Friday, July 14th 6pm until we run out. Bring your whole family out for a great time! Aqua Zumba is classic aqua aerobics with Latin flavor added to regular Zumba routines. The typical land-based Zumba dance steps, such as cha-cha, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, and mambo, are exaggerated and slower in water, so the water tempo is half the land tempo, creating a low-impact work out for all fitness levels. Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Info Sit back, relax and take in the beauty of a Dobson Ranch lake on a pontoon ride! Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum. Reservations are available through the Recreation Department and require a 7 day minimum notice and are subject to weather and availability.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center.

A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. If a rental request is within 10 business days there will be an expedited fee 2 times the rental amount. Reservations can be made at the La Casita Recreation Center and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

Each week the activities at La Casita Summer Camp are built around a special theme. Campers enjoy a structured environment featuring field trips, speakers, arts and crafts, active and quiet games, movies and pool time. Summer Vacations & Excessive Heat Warnings Deplete Pickleball Turnouts‌

Extreme summer weather and vacation schedules have been taking a toll on attendance, so pickleball enthusiasts really need to be on our email list and check it regularly for any cancellations or schedule revisions before coming out.

That said, we continue to get a lot of play in, and our Monday morning “Inter-Club Sessions at 7am in particular provides some diverse and excellent competition with players from other pickleball communities around the East Valley. During the summer months, Saturdays at 7 am is probably the best time if there are beginners that want to come out and get oriented to the sport.

Remember, these courts are provided by the Dobson Association for members and their guests, and playing time is not limited to our published group-play hours. Another great benefit of homeownership in Dobson Ranch!

2017 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale Now The weather is perfect for outdoor activities, like fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are PLE required (catch and release only) and boat EXAM permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply). Licenses and Permits may be purchased at La Casita, 2719 South Reyes. Boat Licenses are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Fishing Licenses are $13 for an individual and $30 for a family (up to four). Children 7 years and up require a license. For more information, please call the recreation department at 480-831-7464.

Dobson Ranch Recreation Department is pleased to announce an Outdoor Day event on Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at Los Altos Recreation Center located at 2524 W. Campo Alegre, Mesa, Arizona, 85202.

Happy summer everyone, hope you are keeping cool and enjoying as many indoor activities as possible.

At our last Retirees meeting I was chatting with one of our new members. They had lived on the ranch for a long time, but recently retired and wondered now…. how easy (or not) would it be to make new friends outside the workplace. Probably each of us has had a similar feeling at one time or another.

As children, we change schools and strive to “fit in” with a new group. As adults, we change jobs and have to adjust to a very different workplace environment. Maybe we move to another city or town or even to a different country and face different social and cultural challenges. We lose a longtime friend or companion and suddenly alone.

No matter our past experiences, as Dobson Ranch residents it is pretty easy to “fit in”. Our community enjoys such a range of Ranch events, activities, clubs and interests it’s easy for a newcomer to feel welcome.

For our Retirees group, it just means, coming to one of our meetings or events and mingling with other members. What a great stressfree way to make new friends. Hiking, biking, dinner night, ladies lunch, men’s breakfast celebrations of birthdays and anniversaries, movies, game day, travel and much more.

On the Ranch there is, boating, tennis, pickleball, gardening, dancing, swimming and fishing, exercise or dance lessons. Oh, last but not least, don’t forget golf. All these things are right here, close by our homes.

Can’t find anything that peaks your interest? Start a new group of your own! The “movies group” of retirees began that way.

On the 4th of July, we celebrated all our wonderful freedom’s and men and women who made that possible. One freedom we all share on Dobson Ranch is the great freedom to make and to enjoy new friends. Let Freedom and friendship ring. Hope to see many of you at our next event!

We are highlighting one of our previous scholarship recipients of 2013, Katie Ewbank Neuhring. Katie went to ASU. In December of 2014 she was married and moved to Tacoma, Washington with her husband, who is in the military. She continued her studies online thru ASU. They are now stationed in Colorado Springs and plan to return to Dobson Ranch next year. We congratulate Katie on her graduation from ASU this year. We wish them the best in the future and look forward to having her back in the community.

We survived the record breaking heat wave of June. Thank you to all of our First Responders, Police, Firefighters and Military for continuing to assist and protect us especially during these hot summer months.

We were stationed at Andrews AFB in June of 1990. I was playing golf with several ladies that had children stationed at Williams AFB and Luke AFB. We couldn’t believe the extreme temperatures. Little did I realize back then, that I would have the opportunity to experience these temperatures first hand. I must say, it wasn’t on my “buck list”. Did anyone attempt to fry an egg and bacon on the sidewalk?

A big Thank you to our Landscape and Maintenance staff for keeping DR looking it’s best… especially now.

By Ed Ricci I take back everything I said in my last article about best fishing at sunup, sundown, and during the night. Fishing had been really good during the day in late May and June on the Dobson Ranch lakes. And fishing seemed to be much better after the sun was high up in the sky with some good fishing throughout the day. You can always catch bass on plastics like Texas and dropshot rigs. But reaction baits like crankbaits, jerk baits, swimbaits, and flukes ruled. There were also bonus catfish caught on bass lures. The topwater bite was still sketchy, and off and on- but you could string together a few fish if you stuck with it. So flash forward, and we have been nailed with a litany of 110 degree days through June.

Lake temps as of this writing were near 90 degrees. Best fishing will shift to dawn and dusk and nighttime- I swear!

Check the diurnal tables related to moon activity for highest fish activity. I was on South Mountain on June 22, and animals were going crazy at the end of my hike. I saw chipmunky things, ground squirrels, a horny toad that looked like Jaba the Hut, and a Gila Monster. Birds were all over the place. No snakes thankfully! I got home and there were bait fish rippling the water all over the lake. This animal activity was all in a period of about two hours. I checked the diurnal table in my Bassmaster Magazine, and this animal activity coincided with the peak for fishing that day from around 11 am to 1 pm. Checking the diurnal tables is interesting and of course not foolproof for animal and fish activity. But it’s a piece of the puzzle.

Dobson Ranch Library Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Dobson Ranch Library, celebrated its 30th anniversary Saturday, June 17. Mesa Library Director Heather Wolf gave a brief history of the library and members of the community reminisced about the past 30 years.

Construction on Dobson Ranch Library began in the summer of 1986 with a design that visually blended into the surrounding park and lake area and it officially opened June 18, 1987. The design of the library was considered cutting edge when it opened with open loft ceiling and exposed ductwork, creative concrete pillars, beautiful light wood features and neon signs.

The library’s collection began with 87,000 volumes of books, 200 magazine subscriptions and no audio or visual items at the time. The library never had a card catalog but it began with a computer pod in the center and a computer in the children’s area. The library was originally open Tuesday through Saturday for 47 hours a week.

Dobson Ranch Library now has 340,000 ebooks available to download, along with audio books, DVDs and electronic magazines. It is currently open Monday through Saturday for 60 hours a week. It was recently remodeled to add study rooms, a wall to divide the children’s area and a family restroom.

Heat Hints for Pets

For some reason we have all decided to live in a desert, suffering through extreme heat in exchange for not having to shovel snow. It seems like a fair trade off until we get our first week of multiple 100 degree days, but we find ways to adapt. Special care needs to be taken with our pets during this time of year.

• Swimming – Did you know that not all dogs know how to swim?

They need to be supervised around water until you are sure they have the hang of things.

• Hot cars – Never leave your fur baby in the car! In a matter of 15 minutes the temperature inside of a car can reach 160 degrees or more.

• Walks— Although we all need our exercise, use caution when taking your dog on walks. During the summer asphalt can reach 150 degrees and contrary to popular belief, dogs paw pads are very sensitive and they can burn and blister easily.

It is important to remember that pets cannot sweat to cool themselves down. The only way they can release excess body heat is by panting. When pets are unable to lower their body temperature on their own they can begin to exhibit signs of heat stroke. A few symptoms of heat stroke include: drooling, excessive panting, seizures and vomiting. If you suspect your pet may be suffering from heat stroke, take them to a veterinarian immediately.

Play it safe this summer! Don’t push yourself or your furbabies beyond personal limits, just hunker down in the air-conditioning counting the days until September like the rest of us. As always, do not hesitate to call your veterinarian with any questions or concerns.

City of Mesa Announces New Police Chief Ramon Batista, former Tucson assistant police chief, has been selected as the new chief of police for the Mesa Police Department.

Batista has been with the Tucson Police Department for 31 years and in the position of Assistant Police Chief since 2014. Batista has a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Safety and Emergency Management from Grand Canyon University and a Master’s Degree in Leadership from Grand Canyon University.

Batista will oversee a department with approximately 1,200 employees and a budget of $175.9 million.

Mesa Community College’s Performing Arts Center How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying is performing at Mesa Community College’s Performing Arts Center this July. Evening performances at 7:30 p.m. on July 14, 15, 20, 21, 22 and a matinee at 2 pm on July 22.

How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying follows the rise of ambitious, J Finch, who uses a little handbook called “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying” to climb the corporate ladder, rising from window washer to a high-power executive.

Sue Anne Lucius, who has taught at Mesa Community College since 1978, will produce the shows. The musical will be directed

by Jere Van Patten whose work spans Phoenix Theatre, Southwest Shakespeare Company, East Valley Children’s Theatre, Hale Center Theatre. He currently teaches at MCC and Mountain View High School.

Choir and the Musical Direction will be lead by Joseph Johnston, current faculty at MCC and Red Mountain High School and where he conducts choirs, teaches voice master classes and music education.
