Message From the Executive Director

Annual Meeting and New Electronic Election Process The Associations Annual Meeting of Members will be held on April 11. If you are interested in running for the Board of Directors for the Dobson Association please submit your candidate form by February 20, so that your information is published in the March Newsletter.

All candidates’ information is also posted on the Association website at DobsonRanch.com.

Each year, there are three seats available for a three-year term. As you will see on pages 6 and 7, there are five community members that are currently running for the three seats. All members are homeowners that live within Dobson Ranch and have a desire to be a board member; supporting the Associations continued success.

This month’s Roundup is dedicated to the upcoming Annual Meeting.

We are focused on the electronic voting. The newsletter and website have important information on the electronic voting process.

In March the Association will be sending to each homeowner the annual meeting notice via postcard. On page 8, is an example of the postcard. Please be on the lookout for the postcard and don’t throw it away. The postcard contains special information that allows you to view information and vote electronically. If you don’t receive a postcard by March 15, please contact the office or stop by any of our upcoming events.

We know life can get a little hectic, but your vote counts.

At the following events, there will be polling available to you; • Movie in the Park March 10, Laguna Park 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm • Clean up, Shred and Garage Sale March 18, Los Altos and Saratoga 8:00 am – 10:00 am • Spring Expo and Pancake Breakfast March 25, La Casita 8:00 am – 10:00 am

Last year out of 4,955 ballots sent the Association received 636 (13%) returned. This year, I hope that the numbers increase and that most of you will vote electronically. Should you not have a computer, no problem. We will have a voting booth set up for you to use at the administration office located at the La Casita Center at 2719 S. Reyes.

If you simply don’t use computers, you’re able to receive a paper ballot at the administration office.

The process is still a secret ballot. Overseeing the electronic process and counting the ballots is done by a third party. Election results are shared the night of the annual meeting.

As a Board of Director for the Association, they accept a new and challenging responsibility. These new and past board members will

be making decisions that help the Association prosper. Their primary focus is on maintaining the Association, increasing property values and enriching community events. They accomplish this through myself and the professional staff of the Dobson Association and community volunteers. Board members view and create Association policies. These policies are created by a majority vote of the board, not by individuals acting alone. The Board appoints ADHOC committees for the purpose of dealing with special projects and functions. Committee’s recommendations are discussed and voted on at monthly board meetings. Through their dedication, our Board of Directors, are making Dobson Ranch the best place to live.

Message From the Board President

Board Highlights

I called the January 19, 2017 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. Here’s a recap…

The first item of business was my President’s Report…I recently attended a monthly coffee at the Landings. It was a nice event and turn-out. I always like to meet our constituents and the coffee is a great opportunity to hear about what’s happening at the Landings.

Associate Director of Finance Maria Clark received her professional designation, CMCA Certified Manager of Community Associations, last month. Congratulations to Maria on furthering your professional education.

Budget and Finance chair Gary Sattelberger recently resigned from the committee. Thank you to Gary for all of his work as a member and committee chair. Gary has been a dedicated committee member since 2012; thank you again Gary for your time and efforts volunteering for the Association.

The Budget and Finance Committee is accepting nominations. This committee is a great way to learn about Ranch operations and is often a stepping stone to being a candidate for the Board of Directors; please contact the Administration office for more information on volunteering.

Last week I had the opportunity to address the Retirees Club at their monthly meeting. I discussed the structure of the Association, the function of the Board of Directors, and some of the significant projects underway around the Ranch. I also offered our appreciation of the club; they are our largest, most active club on the Ranch, we value all they do for the Ranch and Ranch residents.

Signage around the Ranch is being installed as part of an overall branding project; along those lines I had the pleasure of unveiling signage for the designation of Dennis Kavanaugh Park at the meeting. A few months back the Board voted to designate Frisbee Park renaming it to Dennis Kavanaugh Park; Dennis is a long-time resident of Dobson Ranch, former councilmember and previous Dobson Ranch Board of Director. Staff produced a fantastic sign; we are excited to designate the park at a ceremony on February 26 at 1 p.m. please see page 1 or 30 for more information on the event.

Last weekend’s Polar Plunge was an awesome event. Thank you to all who came out in support of the new event and braving the chilly weather and 51-degree water. And thank you to our Recreation Department for bringing this to fruition. It was a fun event for a great cause, we hope it will be a growing annual event.

Under “New Business” the Board reviewed and approved the following business items: sponsorship of the Dobson Ranch Softball team, playground equipment for Mini Park, offering cohesive signage to sub-associations at the cost of materials and labor, and eliminating the requirement of a certificate of insurance for event rentals. The Los Altos lap pool and deck were postponed to the February meeting.

Under “Discussion” the suggestion of additional dock rental space was referred to the Master Planning Committee for review as well as the idea of bathrooms at Laguna Park.

Call for Candidates BOD Candidacy Do you have time to volunteer and be a servant leader for Dobson Ranch? Then consider running as a candidate for the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors. If you’re considering running for the board, we ask that you take a few moments to ask yourself the following three questions: Do I have the time?

As a board member, you will need to devote at least several hours of your time each month to Association business. During special projects, you may need to spend a little extra time on association business. Some board members may also spend a little more time than others if they work with a committee.

Can I make tough decisions when it’s required?

The primary role of the Board is to conduct the business of the Association. This doesn’t just mean approving the budget, but also developing and enforcing policies. Board members are required to step outside their immediate circle of family and neighbors and make decisions based on the greater good of the community.

Can I do all this and have fun, too?

It isn’t all about policies and tough decisions. Our community is only as good as we make it, and establishing and maintaining a sense of community is a part of a board member’s responsibility. Planning and attending functions and being a presence in the community are as important as any policy decisions you may make.

Being a board member can be frustrating at times, but it may also be one of the most rewarding ways you’ll find to volunteer your time.

March will usher in a little March madness of our own at The Movie in the Park on March 10, because there will be FREE hot dogs, nachos and water provided by our Ranchers’ Roundup publisher, Valhalla Community Magazines! The madcap adventures will continue with Spring Break Camp on March 13-17, the Ranch Wide Garage Sale, Cleanup and Shred on March 18, and the best ever Pancake Breakfast on March 25 along with an exciting Spring Expo for the whole family on March 25. March 31 will finish out the month with the BYOB event for the 21 and over crowd. Why do you want to serve on the board?

To serve our DR community in my areas of expertise.

What key qualifications would you bring to the Association?

Vast experience in budgeting, cost control, executive adminstrative/managerial/leadership positions in both industry and 501c3 organizations. Service in past positions include Executive Director of two non-profit organizations (PIC lnt’I and Gracies), board member of Goodworks Counseling, Chairman of the Board of GCC. Have written organizational policy for four industrial/non-profit organizations. Managed contracts in excess of $100 Million and was a Certified Professional Contract Manager (CPCM).

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community?

Fiscal and fiduciary responsibility in our DR leadership.

Autobiography: Mr.Brosman served 23 years in a variety of engineering (BSME) & business (MBA), including policy, negotiating and management positions. For 13 years was the Executive Director of two 501c3 nonprofit organizations. Also has served as a Pastor (M of Theology) and has taught a variety of science, business and theology classes (Community College Teacher Certified). Mr. Brosman and his family have lived in DR for 39 years and is currently retired. He has been married for forty years and has two children. His daughters swam on the DR team for 10+ years. Mr. Brosman is a voracious reader and enjoys, sports, biking, chess and working out at the gym. Mr. Brosman has served in a variety of laity positions at his church.

Why do you want to serve on the board?

I have gained a lot of experience in the complex process of managing this great community during my 6 years of service on the Board. I would like to continue to bring my water management expertise to the Board so that we continue to have a great place to live.

What key qualifications would you bring to the Association?

For 24 years I have been an active member of the Dobson Ranch Water Management Committee, serving as chairman for the last 11 years. The committee oversees general ways to improve and conserve our use of water within the ranch, including lake water consumption, turf and landscape water use and rain water harvesting.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community?

Water is a critical issue for any community but especially one like Dobson Ranch with its 8 lakes, 3 major park areas and lots of landscaping and grass. The HOA must continue it’s excellent relations with the Arizona Department of Water Resources (ADWR) to ensure that our lake water costs are manageable and that we foster and support water conservation skills which are models for other communities.

Autobiography: My wife Peggy and I have lived in Dobson Ranch since 1981. I retired from Honeywell Aerospace in 2001 and currently do volunteer work at a Tempe Grade school 2 days a week. Peggy is also very active doing volunteer work for the city of Mesa. We very much enjoy the community that calls itself Dobson Ranch.

Kirk Mehlhorn Dobson Ranch owner and resident Why do you want to serve on the Board?

I would like to serve on the Dobson Ranch HOA Board of Directors in order to serve the Dobson Ranch community in a more formal capacity.

I truly enjoy the community that I live in and would like to see it continue to grow and flourish. I believe that I have the necessary talents and energy required to make a difference.

What key qualification would you bring to the Association?

During my professional career as a risk management consultant, I have had the opportunity to interact with a variety of corporate clients (including fields such as Banking, Higher Education, Technology and Consumer Goods) and develop a key understanding of what activities and processes are required to facilitate success.

This corporate experience, in addition to my formal training in the accountancy and finance fields, will allow me to provide objective insights and perspective on key issues or decisions faced by the Dobson Ranch community.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community?

I believe that the planning and treatment of association finances is a critical issue facing this community. I do not suggest this as an accusation of the current management structure, but as a larger macroeconomic issue facing all communities across the country. The process of effectively collecting, planning, allocating funds for such a diverse and large organization is a complex and challenging task. I believe that my skills in corporate finance will be of use to the organization and benefit the community at large.

Kirk Mehlhorn has lived in the Dobson Ranch Community ever since acquiring his own residence in February of 2013. For his profession, Kirk has served as a Risk Management and Advisory consultant for the national consulting firm Protiviti for the past five years. While at Protiviti, Kirk has assisted with leading sizable projects in corporate finance and regulatory compliance for a number of clients in diverse industry sectors. He believes that his unique skill set will allow him to help identify areas of improvement for Dobson Ranch and provide an objective view of the community’s financial policies and spending habits.

Kirk was born and raised in Arizona where he graduated from Arizona State University, W.P. Carey School of Business, with two Bachelors of Science degrees with specializations in Accounting and Finance. In his free time, Kirk enjoys spending time with his wife and pets through biking, running and pickleball.

Why do you want to serve on the Board?

I have been a resident of Dobson Ranch since 1987. I have always been actively involved in the community, including participation in the annual Garden Tour, membership in various committees (Tennis, Recreation, Beautification, Nominating, and Vote Supervision), frequent Board meeting attendance, and unofficial Pickleball Commissioner. I am a strong supporter of Dobson Ranch and wish to continue my record of community involvement.

What key qualification would you bring to the Association?

Dobson Ranch is now well over 40 years of age, starting development in 1973. Past Boards and staff have done an admirable job of maintaining our neighborhoods and facilities in order to enhance property values for all of us. Our challenge will be to maintain our quality of life and strong sense of community into the future while wisely managing our financial resources.

The Board of Directors has three major areas of responsibility: fiduciary (prudently managing the Association’s finances); quality of life (maintaining our assets and implementing long-range plans); and communication (listening to Ranch residents).

We have many exciting projects on the horizon (on-line voting, electronic access for Ranch facilities, rebranding of Ranch infrastructure, and expanding La Casita patio areas). I look forward to working with residents, staff and the Board of Directors to implement these projects in a continuing effort to keep Dobson Ranch “The Best Place to Live”!

Autobiography: I retired in 2003 as Planning Director for the City of Mesa after a 28-year career in urban planning. I then served as Executive Director for the Dobson Association, followed by two terms on the Board of Directors, including the past year as Board President. For the past three years it’s been an honor to serve with the current Board of Directors. With your help, I would like to continue to serve and represent the residents of Dobson Ranch. As a Board Member, I served on the Ad Hoc Committee to update the policies of the Association, the Master Planning Committee for long range strategic planning, and the Marketing Committee to keep Residents informed. I’m familiar with both the budget and the updated bylaws and wish to keep Dobson Ranch moving ahead as a Great Place to Live!

What key qualifications would you bring to the Association?

As a previous business owner, former member of various corporation boards of directors and President of a commercial condominium association, I will bring to your board a vast array of business experience from maintaining real property and be an unbiased representative of association members.

Possibly more than anything else, a highquality Board member is about having the time to commit to the position and the ability to balance the requests and requirements of the residents within the constraints of the financial plan.

In closing, I have the time needed and the knowledge required to be a positive member of the team. I hope that the residents of Dobson Ranch will consider me for a position with the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors.

What do you see as a critical issue facing our community?

As a member of the Dobson Ranch Board of Directors, one should be understanding and sensitive to the residents’ concerns. It is a position of trust and has an impact on the lives of everyone in the community.

In addition, a board member is sometimes required to perform a delicate balancing of resources and budgets. The decision should include the knowledge of the goals of the community and those affected.

We must continue to be attentive in keeping Dobson Ranch the Best Place to Live by: 1. Maintaining property values and by being attentive and fair with CCR’s 2. Maintaining a Zero Based Budgeting approach to cost management 3. Keeping annual assessments to a minimum 4. Continuing to communicate with the City of Mesa activities and government affairs the effects on our community Autobiography:

2017 Association Board of Directors Election to Utilize Online Voting

Currently there are 5 residents who are seeking to represent you for the next 3 years as a Board of Director in our HOA. We have 3 openings and 5 candidates, so your vote definitely counts! A quorum of 10% is required.

The Dobson Association 2017 Board of Directors election will utilize online voting. Online voting is quick, convenient and secure. Voting is secret ballot, the voting process and ballot counting will be done by a third party. Election Results are announced at the annual meeting.

The online voting software will work with personal computers, smart phones, tablets, etc., and in any modern browser. We recommend that voters use the latest updated browser version that’s available.

A postcard (similar to the illustration) will be sent via USPS to each homeowner and will arrive in March 2017.

The front of the postcard will contain information regarding the Annual Meeting.

The back of the postfor the Board of Directors election card will contain voting directions, links to Annual Meeting and Celebration Tuesday, April 11, 2017 the online voting site and a very important code printed above the mailing address. Every code is different, is linked to the homeowner and can only be used to vote once. The online voting site will look like the illustration. Place the code received on the postcard in the box.

Once entered, voting instructions, candidate bios, and the ballot will appear. Three Board of Directors are being elected; cumulative voting is permitted. You may vote for 3 candidates or divide 3 votes as you choose. Walking Around the Ranch

I may have mentioned before about walking around the Ranch. I am not alone ambling along on the sidewalks and streets of our neighborhoods; many people enjoy walking. Some are walking by themselves, others in groups and many with pets in tow; who is being towed is not always clear.

I enjoy my time on the streets and greeting all those who pass me.

Walking does present challenges. Much of the time I find that I am looking at the sidewalks much more than I am noticing the interesting landscapes in the front yards in the Ranch. I try not to follow the same path each outing, there are many routes to follow to make that 3-mile mark; someday I will reach 3 miles in one outing. I have noticed that there are markings on the sidewalks indicating when and which company poured the concrete sidewalk. There are some interesting dates stamped into the concrete that mirrors the development of the Ranch. I have found dates ranging from 1973 to 2016. Of course, there is a logical progression of these dates as each neighborhood was developed.

As I was pounding these sidewalks, I was wondering how to make a connection to water conservation. Finally, I stumbled on a way to make such a connection. How many sidewalk panels are stamped and what is the range of dates? I would offer a Smart Irrigation Controller raffle ticket to each person who emails me (wmd@dobsonranch.com) a photo of a sidewalk stamp; see photo. Where is the oldest stamp, what is the most common, and what is the newest section? The drawing for the Smart Irrigation Controller will be held at the Annual Meeting on April 11, 2017.

Getting one of these coveted Smart Irrigation Controller raffle tickets is a laborious and time-consuming task. One would have to come to the Dobson Ranch Spring Expo on March 25, 2017, find the Water Conservation table and fill out the raffle ticket. At that time I could tell you about all the benefits a smart irrigation controller offers and about all the other water and energy conservation techniques available. There will be other knowledgeable people at the Spring Expo that have specific knowledge to help.

As I walk around our neighborhoods, I can see the pride we take in living here in Dobson Ranch. Part of that is knowing we live in a desert where water makes living in the desert possible - make the best of it.

2017 Assessments

The Board of Directors has once again approved no increase to the Assessments for 2017. The assessment will remain at $138.60 quarterly ($554.40 annually). Thank you for your contribution in making Dobson Ranch “the best place to live!”.

As a reminder, assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $15 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

There are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranch.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association Administration or Recreation departments. Please be sure to include your account number when remitting your payment. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through mail or drop off.

3. Using your bank card, credit card or e-check, automatic and one-time payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www. dobsonranch.com), by clicking on the “Assessment Payment Portal” (green dollar bill on the front page of the site). If this is the first time you have made a payment on this site, it will be necessary to set up a “New User Account”. Once logged in, select the one-time payment or auto payment option. If setting up automatic recurring payments, click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you have set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes. If you are currently setup on recurring payments through the payment portal, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2017.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay with your personal banking institution. When setting up the payment through your bill pay program, please be sure to reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Citrus Collection La Casita will not be a citrus collection point this year. Due to the Department of Agriculture’s expansion of the Asian Citrus Psyllid quarantine across the entire state of Arizona, Food Banks in Arizona, can now accept citrus donations from the public. Please contact any local food bank before you drop off fruit, to make sure they will accept your donations. The process to donate citrus will vary based on the food bank you are working with.

The recreation department has a lot of programs and events coming up. First off is Sunday Music in the Park with music from The Triplicity Band on February 26th at Laguna Park from 3p-5p. Bring your lawn chairs, we will be selling the refreshments. In March we have Movie in the Park on Friday, March 10th at Laguna Park at sunset (about 6:45 pm). We will be showing the movie “Secret Life of Pets”. Bring your family and friends for a free movie and popcorn and free hot dogs, nachos and water provided by our Ranchers’ Roundup publisher, Valhalla Community Magazines. Next up is Spring Break Camp which will be held March 13th-17th. If you are looking for something for the kiddos to do when they are on break…look no further. We will be introducing some new activities and will have lots of fun throughout the week. It’s also the time of year for some spring cleaning. Join us for our Garage Sale, Clean Up and Shred on Saturday, March 18th.

Last but not least, stop by La Casita to pick up your 2017 magnetic calendar because we have lots of events coming up fast and they will be here before you know it. Come join us in March for a Pancake Breakfast and the Spring Expo on Saturday, March 25th.

We’ve been keeping quite busy in preschool since the new year began. This month we celebrated our friendship and love with Valentine’s Day and learned about our wonderful 5 senses. Did you know we started registration for our summer program and for the 2017-18 school year? If you are interested in signing up now is the time to come in and get your preschooler signed up! Have you been enjoying this beautiful weather as much as me? How about our fine feathered friends? I’m sure they are glad they chose to fly south! Here is a recipe/craft to give them a treat: Materials: • ¾ Cup Flour • 3 Tbsp. Light Corn Syrup • ½ Cup Water • 4 Cups Wild Bird Food • Cookie Cutters • Yarn • Drinking Straw Directions: Mix the ingredients together to form a (sticky) dough. Lay your cookie cutter out onto a piece of wax paper and fill them in with the dough. Use the straw to make a hole on the top for stringing. Let your bird cakes dry overnight, pop them out of the cookie cutter, string it with the yarn and hang from the tree! Voila! A treat for the birds.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community. The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available.

We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. If a rental request is within 10 business days there will be an expedited fee 2 times the rental amount. Reservations can be made at the La Casita Recreation Center and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

DR “Winter” Pickleball Is Alive and Well… 2017 Boat Permits and Fishing Licenses on Sale Now Despite Weather Challenges

Neither sleet, nor hail, snow or tornadoes deter our resolute DR pickleball players from keeping their assigned play dates….. Okay, so we were rained out a couple times this last month, but it is all good as it may solve the drought and global warming, plus we like to study pickleball training manuals while we wait until it dries out and we can go for it again. Some of us also look on “meetup.com” for indoor options elsewhere when that happens. That is a good way to get your “pickleball fix” and also meet some new people in a different environment who share at least one of your interests.

Our next “friendly” tournament at The Ranch, The 5th Annual DR Valentines Spectacular, is set for Saturday, February 11th, wherein we will show our love for pickleball by attempting to thrash our lovely opponents on the Los Altos field of combat. Valentine’s Day related prizes for participation will be again awarded courtesy of the cherubs at the Mizner-Gillies LoveArts Studio!

Our drop-in play hours for the winter remain at 8 am, Monday, Thursday and Saturday, and night play Tuesday evenings at 6:30 pm. Additional hours are available on Monday and Thursday evenings at 7 pm, which have an orientation towards beginning to intermediate players, but all are welcome.

Beginners are always welcome during group play and will receive basic instruction from regular participants and use of members extra paddles while getting introduced to the sport. Please wear appropriate court shoes.

Remember, these courts are provided by the Dobson Association for members and their guests, and playing time is not limited to our published group-play hours. Another great benefit of homeownership in Dobson Ranch!

It’s True What They Say About Patience

It took Albert Einstein 10 years to publish his theory of relativity. Some sources say it took Leonardo da Vinci 12 years to perfect Mona Lisa’s mysterious smile. And the Great Pyramid of Giza took two decades to be constructed.

I’m sure we have all heard the adage “patience is a virtue.” This saying applies to many aspects of life, especially sports. If there is one thing I’ve learned over the years, patience is crucial when it comes to improving your tennis game. Often while coaching, I see juniors and adults alike seeking instant results and quick fixes.

In this case, I like to refer to another cliché: “if it was easy, everyone would do it.” The challenge of playing tennis is what makes it so addictive, but like with anything else, you must have the patience to persevere through the highs and lows and enjoy the journey. There are no shortcuts or quick fixes in tennis. You must learn through trial and error. I like to equate improvement to remodeling your house. You have to destroy your house and stay patient throughout the renovations before it looks amazing.

I know personally I have had to keep an open mind when it comes to new playing techniques. The more willing I have been to try new things, the better my game has gotten. Even Andy Murray asked “how can I improve?” after being named the world’s number one male tennis player. If Murray, one of the game’s best players on Earth, has the patience to continually improve his tennis game, so can we.

The weather is perfect for outdoor activities, like le fishing and boating at one of the beautiful lakes at exam p Dobson Ranch. Fishing licenses are required (catch and release only) and boat permits are required for all watercraft (size restrictions apply).

Boat Licenses ple m a x are $35 per motorized boat (electric motors e only) and $15 for non-motorized boats and a maximum of 3 permits. Polar Plunge Made a Big Splash

Dobson Ranch held its first ever Polar Plunge event on a chilly January 14th morning. Over 50 plungers and onlookers braved the elements and 51-degree water. There were prizes, treats and the proceeds benefitted Autism Speaks. This will definitely be a return event. Plan to join the fun in 2018!

Bark in the Park What a beautiful January day it was on the 28th and many Dobson Ranch residents and their dogs agreed as they participated in the Dobson Ranch Bark in the Park event. Laguna Park was fenced and transformed into a doggie playground so Dobson Ranch canines could meet and play with their community neighbors!

Well I hope you all survived the holidays without too much stress. I did notice a lot more of us out walking and getting back in to hiking and biking.

When I think about Dobson Ranch it reminds me of a small town. Although we come from all over the world, we have landed on Dobson Ranch and when we walk down the street or go to the store, we meet people we know from the Ranch and the retirees club. It really makes me think of our old hometown.

It is a great feeling.

Our Retirees club offers places to meet, play, eat and enjoy each other all month long, there is something for everyone! If you want something to do we probably have it for you and that is on top of all the activities Dobson Ranch provides. And all of this for $20.00 a year per retiree, quite a bargain.

As always, the club has hiking every Wednesday. Biking is on Tuesday for the Free Wheelers long ride and on Fridays for the Slow Spokes short ride. Ladies Lunch is on the second Thursday of every month with locations close by. Game day is the first Thursday of every month, everyone brings a snack to share and their own drink. Men’s breakfast is the second Monday of every month, Day Trippers take a different trip the third Thursday of the month. The last Thursday of the month is movie day, Happy Hour is on the last Wednesday of the month, Dinner night is the third Tuesday and Picnics are on the last Monday.

Then for official club business we have our: General Meeting at La Casita the first Monday starting at 9:30 for coffee and tea followed by the meeting at 10:00 with guest speakers, which is then followed by lunch. On the third Monday, we have our Board Meeting with all committee members at 9:00.

When we plan our dinner night, lunch or happy hour, we try very hard to keep it in Mesa, so if any of you have a suggestion for a place we should visit that we haven’t, please let us know and we will see if it is a place that can handle our needs. We are always looking for a good place to go.

If any of you retirees has something you would like to talk about with our Club please drop me a line and I see if I can put it in this spot, remember it needs to be about the retirees.

As of this writing which precedes the actual issue of the ROUNDUP by 2 to 3 weeks, our Dobson Ranch Lake temperatures were about 56 degrees.

This is definitely a temperature at which bass and other gamefish are active. Although you have to slow your fishing approach down, they can be caught. It has been a fairly warm winter. We were actually observing bass near the banks in midJanuary. Then they backed off during the rains, and as it got colder.

Pre- spawn behavior when the bass make actual nests will be in full swing by mid- to late February, and the actual spawn will be most concentrated in March and April, particularly around the March full moon. The bass are most easily caught at this time. At the same time, they are most vulnerable because they are fixated on their beds. We want to release caught fish carefully and quickly so they can return to their beds to successfully spawn.

Has anyone seen the various migratory birds on our lakes this year. The gadwalls returned as usual. There are numerous coots, and they seem to hang out with the gadwalls. I have been also watching a healthy population of redhead ducks. It’s the first time I have seen those on our lakes. The Canadian geese come and go. I have also increasingly been seeing an osprey flying around the lakes. Where there is one, there is two. I have not seen the pair together yet.

Our Club met in late January, and we are looking for new members.

The Dobson Ranch Fish Club accomplishes the following: organizes and sets up the Kid’s Fishing Derby which this year will be October 7; advises on stocking of our lakes; has placed secured fish habitat in the lakes; and more. Several of our members also serve on the Dobson Ranch Water Committee and the Recreation Committee. Her program, which begins at 7:00 p.m. at La Casita, illustrates why humanity turns to gardens for conversation, recreation, food and restoration of the spirit.

Today’s gardeners, influenced by these creative efforts, strive to create beauty on our own little patch of ground.

Linda, a featured speaker at national flower shows and author of the blog “A Traveling Gardner,” recently returned from a seven-week tour of gardens in New Zealand. The presentation is illustrated with original images from gardens around the world.

We all love getting kisses from our four-legged fur babies, but when they go for the smooch and knock you over with their stinky breath this might be an indication of dental disease. February is Pet Dental Health Month to help educate pet owners and increase the awareness of periodontal disease. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have symptoms of dental disease by age 3. If left untreated severe dental disease can lead to heart disease, gastro-intestinal issues, lung disease, and kidney disease. If brushing the teeth at home is not working, a professional dental cleaning under anesthesia will be needed for your fur baby. So, what is it the doctor is looking for during a dental cleaning?

Mesa Community College Spring 2017 Arts Season

In the Community

Mesa Community College proudly announces its Spring 2017 Arts season. Performances and exhibitions feature work by up-and-coming student artists as well as renowned master artists.

Performances and exhibitions are presented in three state-of-theart venues on MCC’s Southern and Dobson campus (1833 W. Southern Ave.). The Performing Arts Center consists of two performance spaces built with exceptional acoustics and visibility for musical, instrumental and dance performances. Boasting theatrical modernizations, the MCC Theatre, a community landmark, delivers an intimate experience to stage performances. The recently-opened Art Gallery embraces the dynamic and multidisciplinary nature of today’s visual culture.

Richard Renaldi’s Touching Strangers traveling exhibit, which creates relationships that may only last for the moment the camera shutter is released, will be on display Jan. 30 - March 24. Note: The Art Gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.

“Effects of Altitude,” photography from MCC students during their stay in the Eastern Sierra Nevada mountains will be on display April 3 - 14. The “Annual Juried Art Student Show” will be on exhibition April 24 - May 12, showcasing the creations of MCC art students, exploring the mediums of ceramics, digital, drawing, painting, photography, 2D and 3D. Music lovers will want to attend the February Community, Concert Band and Orchestra Concert, showcasing MCC’s Instrumental Music Program featuring MCC students and community ensembles. Performance Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.

Three more National Theatre Live screenings are scheduled for March. “Amadeus,” on March 3 at 7:30 p.m., “Saint Joan” on March 4 at 7:30 p.m. and “Hedda Gabler,” on March 24 at 7:30 p.m.

Jazz big band lovers won’t want to miss the MCC Performing Arts Jazz Ensemble (MPJE) Concert on Tuesday, March 7 at 7 p.m.

Another treat for jazz fans, two performances by the Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of MCC alumnus Paul Brewer. The band has performed all over the country at various festivals and concerts and continues to promote jazz at a high level throughout the Valley. March 8 and May 3, both at 7 p.m.

The Community, Concert Band and Orchestra, composed of students and community musicians, presents Tuesday, April 25.

Alma School Rd (in the Fiesta Palms shopping center). A couple of years ago I had shoulder surgery for a rotator cuff separation. After recuperation and therapy, I was advised by my physical therapist that I needed to continue with a physical fitness program to prevent a recurrence. Since I’ve never been a exercise type of person I visited several of the major advertised gyms but came away feeling pressured to buy into “fill in the blank” program. I had nearly given up when a flyer appeared on my door advertising that just around the corner was a gym! I visited with the owner and came away with a feeling that here was a place that I could exercise without being pressured and, more importantly, not judged by the other members on my dress and looks. The price was reasonable and with a month-to-month payment plan I was ready to take the plunge. Let me say I’ve never regretted it. It’s a full-service gym with opportunities for personal training (if you are so inclined) but the easy going and relaxed atmosphere is what I was looking for and I’ve found it here.

New District 3 Councilmember Sworn In

January 12 was a big night for Mesa government as three new councilmembers and Mayor John Giles were officially sworn in at the Mesa Arts Center in downtown.

Our new District 3 Councilmember is Ryan Winkle who replaces Dennis Kavanaugh. Winkle was elected to the Mesa City Council in August 2016 and his term on the Council will run until January of 2021.

Councilmember Winkle is one of the co-founders of the Mesa Urban Garden, a community organization that provides fresh produce directly to the community and local food banks. He was a key voice behind turning an empty dirt lot into a point of pride for Downtown Mesa. He is also a co-founder of RAILMesa, a registered neighborhood group that advocates for increased citizen participation, responsible development of housing, transit options and the creation of quality jobs along Mesa’s Light Rail Corridor.

Winkle works as a Community Economic Development Consultant, dealing with underserved communities around the East Valley in the areas of housing options, workforce development, neighborhood revitalization, public outreach and transit-oriented development.

Winkle holds both a Bachelor of Arts in Sustainable Urban Dynamics and a Bachelor of Sciences in Urban Planning from Arizona State University and a Masters of Business Administration from Wilkes University Mesa. Raised in Mesa, Ryan and his wife Ericka have one son, Rian Erick.

World Series Trophy Comes to Mesa’s Chicago Cubs Rally

The City of Mesa and the Chicago Cubs announced today at the Mayor’s State of the City breakfast that a community rally will be held on February 24, from noon to 4 p.m. at Sloan Park. The rally celebrates the return of the now reigning World Series Champion Chicago Cubs to Mesa for the kick-off of their 2017 baseball season. This celebration will not only feature speakers such as Manager Joe Maddon and several Cubs players but will also include the World Series Trophy, its only public stop in Arizona on the State Farm Trophy tour.

The event will kick-off at noon with a special program honoring the team lead by Mesa Mayor John Giles and the unveiling of the 2016 World Series Champions Trophy.

Gates will open at 10 a.m. with live music, food and beverages starting at 11 a.m. There will be photo opportunities with the trophy for a limited number of fans after the rally ends at 12:30 p.m. Details will be announced at www.sloanpark.com.

Those attending the event should treat it as a game day with parking off Dobson Road and Rio Salado Parkway and bag checks on entry into the event area.
