Happy Holidays! I hope you are enjoying this holiday season. Many homes throughout the Ranch are in the holiday spirit and have festively decorated. Here at the Association we’ve also added to our decorations – check out the Los Altos facility this year, multi-colored lights have been put up to illuminate this little section of the Ranch. Lighting has also been added to our Saratoga facility, enhancing the holiday atmosphere just in time for our Winter Wonderland events.

As I discussed in my November article, court renovations at Los Altos, Saratoga, Brookedge, and Laguna Shores are in progress and quickly being completed. Los Altos courts were finished ahead of schedule and look fantastic. New lights, light timers, fencing, net post, and court surfacing are all done. Brookedge court is on schedule to be completed by December 30. Saratoga courts will be getting new lighting, light timer and will be resurfaced; completion is on track for mid-January. The last portion of the project, Laguna Shores is scheduled to wrap-up by the end of January. Laguna Shores will have new lighting, light timer, and the surface area on the west side will be repaired. Of course, all of the time frames are based on clear days; thus far progress has been remarkable and we are pleased with the outcome.

Thank you for your patience during these renovations, which protect the Associations’ assets.

Thank you to all of you who stopped by to say hello during Winter Wonderland, this fun event is a huge success thanks to your participation. There was snow play, crafts, activities, games, hot cocoa and cookies, carols, and the always brilliant lighted boat parade. If you didn’t make it out this year consider it for next, it is always a great time.

We are blessed here in Dobson Ranch, the Association is grateful to be part of your everyday lives and community. Again, Happy Holidays, I wish you and yours all the best in the New Year.

Message from the Association Board President

I called the November 19, 2015 Dobson Ranch Homeowners Association Board of Directors meeting to order at 7:00 pm. It was a productive meeting, here’s a recap…

I gave the President’s Report, I love this time of year at Dobson Ranch. Starting in October, the Association has nine fun events. I hope that all of you are getting out there and enjoying the events along with the nice cool weather. Speaking of weather, the change has the staff hopping by adding winter rye to common areas and new flowers.

Dobson Ranch is looking great!

I reported for the Marketing Committee, the committee plans to meet next month to review website feedback. Stacy Holmstedt reported for the Finance Committee, longtime member Jason Tauber has resigned, his service of six years was recognized; his dedication is greatly appreciated. The Master Planning Committee will reconvene in January. Ron Magaw reported for the Water Management Committee that the SRP dry-up begins on November 20. Sarah Funtowicz spoke on behalf of the Recreation Committee; the Halloween event was well attended with around 1,200 attendees, as was the Fall Festival with around 500. Staff is preparing for Winter Wonderland on December 5 and Breakfast with Santa on December 12. Frank Mizner reported for the AdHoc Committee that work is progressing, the Board of Directors received the revised Bylaws for review, the Architectural Control Guidelines have been revised and will be reviewed next by the Architectural Control Committee, and Common Area Guidelines are being created. Frank Mizner also reported for the Architectural Control Committee, they processed 75 applications for the month of October.

Executive Director, David Jones gave his Director’s Report and spoke regarding the ongoing renovations at the Los Altos, Laguna Shores, Brook Edge, and Saratoga courts.

The following business items were voted on and approved: • Jan Walters was appointed to the Budget and Finance Committee • A professional engineer will be hired to give an opinion on the Lake 1 seawall to include a soil condition test as well as a seawall strength test not to exceed $7,500.00 • Wil-Ray was chosen to complete electrical repair at Los Altos not to exceed $16,000.00 • Saratoga rental rates for special events will be increased $10.00 • Chair rental deposits will be increased as specified by staff • The office will be closed on December 24, 2015 The meeting adjourned at 8:44pm.

Things to Know Board Meeting Want to know what is going on in the Association, meet the Board members, sign up for a committee, get to know your Ranch neighbors or voice an opinion? Holiday Decorations The removal date for holiday lights and holiday decorations is January 15, 2016.

2016 Assessments

Your Neighborhood

Dear Dobson Ranch Homeowner: In a continued effort to maintain an affordable assessment while preserving our maturing community, the Board of Directors has voted to not increase the 2016 Assessments. Therefore; the rates will remain at, $138.60 quarterly, $277.20 semi-annually, and $554.40 annually.

Assessments are due on the first day of each quarter; January, April, July, and October. A late fee of $30 will be charged quarterly if your payment is not received by the 20th day of the first month of each quarter.

Delinquent interest will accrue on any unpaid balance.

As a reminder, there are several options for paying your assessments: 1. Automatic monthly payments can be made through ACH (auto debit to your checking account). Please complete the form that can be found in the “Documents & Forms” tab on our website (www.dobsonranchhoa.com) and return it to the administration office along with a voided check. ACH payments are run on the 5th of each month. The payment will continue to be drafted from your account until you give the Association notice to cancel the ACH. Please note that accounts on ACH will not receive future payment coupons. Notice of any assessment change will be published in the current year October or November issue of the Association’s official publication, the Ranchers’ Round Up. 2. Annual, Semi-Annual, or Quarterly payments can be made by check, cash, debit or credit card. Check payments may be mailed to or dropped off at the Association office. Coupons need to accompany mailed or dropped payments. Cash, debit or credit card payments are accepted in the Association office. Please note that debit or credit card payments cannot be accepted over the phone. Monthly payment is not an option through the mail or drop off.

3. Automatic monthly payments can be made at the Dobson Association website (www.dobsonranchhoa.com) using your bank card, credit card or e-check. Scroll down and click on the “Assessment Payment Portal”, set up a New User Account or login if you are a returning user , click on Menu, click on Auto Pay, and enter your information. Once you set up the auto pay, the payment will continue to be processed until you stop the payment or make changes. If you are setup on recurring payments through the Washington Federal/Rentpayment site, please be sure that your payments are set to continue through 2016.

4. You may also send in recurring payments if using automatic bill pay.

You will have to set up the payment through the bill pay program with your bank. Please reference your account number and property address to ensure proper credit to your account.

Annual Canal Dry-up Each year the Salt River Project shuts off the flow of water to the canals that supply water to our lakes. This allows SRP to perform important maintenance tasks to keep the canals clean and patch places where cracks have developed in the concrete lining. This year the canal dry up for the southern canals will begin on November 20th and last approximately 30 days.

While the lake water levels are down, lake front homeowners need to be cautious about the lake edge to prevent pets from escaping or using the shelf as a pathway to visit other yards. Likewise, boats need to be secured to prevent tie down lines from breaking or otherwise protected from unwanted grounding as the water level recedes.

The Ranch takes advantage of this period to perform similar maintenance tasks on the Dobson Ranch Lakes. Beginning November 20th, the lake water levels will begin to recede. It will take several weeks for the water levels to drop enough to expose the shelves that surround the perimeter of each lake. Once exposed, debris that has accumulated will be removed. The water in the lakes are an asset of the Ranch which is not wasted. Generally, water is not released. Nature is allowed to takes its course and through evaporation and seepage to bring down the lake water levels, a slow process.

The SRP dry-up usually ends before the end of the year. The Ranch, however, usually waits a bit before restarting the SRP delivery to insure the canal water is clean. Also, the Ranch takes advantage of this period to perform heavy maintenances as the water levels are low. SRP delivery will start as soon as possible, but full lake water level restoration will take nearly a month to achieve, depending of course on how much nature contributes in the form of rain.

Water is Dull

Your Neighborhood

Water is flat, without shape or sharp edges, without texture; it is just wet. Water can dance, twist and turn or sit for days without moving. Water can sparkle and in many cases it is clear – crystal clear. Water can be placid, but not here. Here, water is for fighting, it has been so for a long time.

There is nothing dull about water.

Long before I moved to Arizona, Arizonans came together to create the Department of Water Resources right after enacting the landmark 1980 Groundwater Management Act (GMA). Most of Arizona embraced the GMA for it created a framework for managing the state’s water resources; to go beyond waiting for the next rain to flood the field because the well ran dry. Since 1980, ADWR has resolved many century-old issues and is now getting close to clearing up just who has what rights to the water that surrounds us, as if one could be surrounded by water in a desert. Those fights are gone, well almost gone. We can now employ/ enjoy our water rights because we know where the water belongs.

Some places, both within Arizona and across the river, have never resolved those issues. Water has been taken, taken from places where it would not be replenished.

When that groundwater is gone and only surface water is left, what happens when the rains do not come? Then the use of water can only be curtailed. The GMA has forced Arizonans to conserve water and that means there is water available when the rains do not come; conserve not curtail.

Are we prepared? The recent series of articles in the Arizona Republic resolved that Arizona is prepared. Arizona has a plan, called Safe-Yield, which limits taking more water than can be replenished, a plan for storing water in the aquafer, for not building where water is not available, for managing the crops that grow in Arizona and for moving water where it is needed. Dobson Ranch also participates in conserving water. Collectively, we have reduced the amount of water used for irrigation. The turf we have is for fun and is an important part of childhood development. Individually, water use in the home is declining. And turf is being relegated to our backyards. Water use on the Ranch has declined thanks to our collective water conservation efforts. Water conservation is paying off.

We, well maybe not me, but a good many people fought long and hard to resolve the issues swirling around water. As in the song young Apache children sing “We are blessed with water, A gift of life.” Water continues to be abundant to those who use it wisely.

Laguna Village Luminaria

The tradition continues! For many, many years the residents of Laguna Village (a subassociation one block west of Dobson south of Keating) have celebrated by placing luminarias throughout their entire neighborhood on Christmas Eve. This year is no exception. Once again, more than 1,000 luminarias will be in place, with the lighting to begin at dusk.

Mesa Police Department Holiday Safety Tips Don’t let the fun and excitement of the holiday season be ruined by an unfortunate event. Here are some safety tips to keep yourself and your belongings safe this winter: • Never give your credit card number over the telephone to anyone when you did not initiate the call.

• If you are shopping online, be sure to use a secure browser, keep your personal information private and shop with companies you know are reputable. Do not give out your social security number, e-mail address, telephone number, or home address unless you know who is collecting the information. Save all transaction information, including e-mails.

• Don’t flash large amounts of money in public. You never know who is watching.

• If you go to an automatic teller machine, try to go during the daylight hours. If you must go at night, pick a machine that is well lit and visible to passing traffic or inside a grocery store.

• When dining out, valet parking is nice, but don’t be too lax.

Don’t leave any personal items in your vehicle and never leave your house key with an attendant.

• Don’t leave gifts inside your car for extended periods of time.

Keep them in the trunk, away from prying eyes, and bring them inside as soon as you get home. Also, don’t leave your garage door opener inside your vehicle. If your car is broken into, this gives instant access to your home.

By using just a little bit of planning, most holiday crimes can be avoided.

I am proud to say the “Fall Festival” was successful. I wanted to thank all of the families in the community for participating this year, especially the ones that participated in chili cook off. I am very excited that Christmas is right around the corner and our recreation department has been busy decorating the Recreation Centers for the holidays. We are anxious for 2016 to arrive and have many new and improved programs and events being offered. In January we have the “Bark in the Park” event on January 23rd. Bring your dogs out to Laguna Park for some fun. You can sign up to participate in dog tricks and see some vendors exclusively for your canine.

We will have areas for big and small dogs, so come out and enjoy the fun. Thanks for all the 2015 memories and I look forward to making many more in 2016.

Euphoria to Appear at Sunday in the Park Euphoria is a rock band that was originally started at Rhodes JR High in 1982 with founding members: David Jonagan, Mike Murphy, Sean Gosney, Richard Sherman, Ramesh Narasimhan, and Annette Staving.

At Dobson High school, the band reformed with members Charles Rehder & Keith Bengston of the band Evolution out of Powell JR High, and the extraordinary keyboard talent Jeff Quinonez.

The Dobson High lineup was: David Jonagan, Mike Murphy, Sean Gosney, Charles Rehder, Keith Bengston, & Jeff Quinonez.

During college, Andy Mitchell(Nine Volt/The Andys) Mike Devine(bass) & Andy Blair(drums) became members of the band which eventually reformed as Hostile Takeover when Leighton Haselgrove Jr took over on drums.

Fast forward a few decades later to 2012 when the band got back together for a “one show reunion”. The reunion lineup was: David Jonagan, Mike Murphy, Sean Gosney, Charles Rehder, Jeff Quinonez & special guest Chris Doyle (Moonshine Blind, Dave Pratt Sex Machine Band). Special guest performers include Annette Staving and Jill Blankenburg.

Since the reunion, the band has decided to keep playing out but needed one last twist to make it what it is today. Dobson Ranch Pontoon Tour/Ride Information There will be no pontoon rides scheduled from December 21, 2015 through February 14, 2016.

A one-time “complimentary” pontoon ride per property is available to residents. Tour fee is $35 per hour with a two hour maximum.

Dobson Ranch Recreation Employee of the Month Dobson Ranch Recreation would like to congratulate Abbie Ahler as the November Employee of the Month. Abbie has only been here for 2 months and has already proven to be a valuable member of the recreation department. She has done a tremendous job acclimating to the position and provides excellent customer service.

Table and Chair Rentals Make your next at home event great with the convenience of renting tables and chairs right in your community.

The Dobson Association not only rents out facilities for private rentals but renting of chairs and tables not held on a ranch facility are also available. We can accommodate a rental up to 140 metal framed folding chairs and 15 rectangle 6 foot by 3 foot tables. The resident must schedule to pick up and drop off the chairs and tables at La Casita Recreation Center. A refundable security deposit of $50 minimum is due in cash or credit card payment to hold your reservation. The rental cost per chair is $0.50 and $5 per table. Reservations can be made through the Recreation Department at 480-831-7464 and include a 14 day cancellation policy.

October was a smashing month for tennis and pickleball at Dobson Ranch!

Three of our own pickleball competitors took home medals in one of the biggest tournaments of the year held at the Surprise Courts. The tournament was Classic Cheryl Combs! Cheryl came called SPA #1 and Frank Mizner and Gina to our Halloween social dressed like a tennis lady from the 1800’s. We are getting a top notch tennis court built at Brookedge and all our other courts are being repaired or resurfaced, and we still have La Casita Recreation Center’s four beautiful tennis courts, which are virtually brand new and in perfect condition.

Speaking of La Casita’s tennis courts, we recently (Halloween morning) held our October tennis social on them... and what a scream that was! A Minion showed up and played masterfully (Betty), and an early 80’s guy also (Steve C.) with a headband, striped socks and short shorts. However, the best costume on this spooky Halloween day went to Cheryl Combs. She came as a blast from the past, when ladies wore sleeves and long white dresses to play tennis. The round robin points leader was Tatiana Shaternik. The social was a complete hit. We all played with wooden racquets (which lasted for about one game) and enjoyed bagels, coffee and juice from Einstein’s.

We offer professionally instructed lessons and clinics for all ages and abilities in both pickleball and tennis, private and group. Recreation Happenings Fall Festival November 14 was a beautiful day for a Fall Festival and several hundred Dobson Ranch residents thought so too! There was something for everyone…. Pontoon rides, vendors, food, bounce houses, carnival games and a coloring contest for the kids. The coloring contest winners were: Dorothy in age 0-4, Madeline in age 5-8 and Danielle in age 9-12. There was great food available by Mustache Pretzels and Kruizin Cuisine. This year was the second annual Chili cookoff. There were 10 contestants, all with amazing chili, and the winners were only a few votes apart. Congratulations to 1st Place winner, Michael McAfee with his “Real Deal Texas Red Chili” and 2nd Place winner, Carl Bouk and his “Bud’s Best”. For the over 21 crowd, Sleepy Dog Brewery provided 4 flavors of beer at the beer garden and wine was served as well. While the festivities were happening, we were entertained with great music

And that’s not all… The Mesa Fire Department drove up in one of their awesome firetrucks, some of the City of Mesa Police Departments finest came and Police Chief John Meza and Vice Mayor Dennis Kavanaugh both spoke to the crowd. Winter Wonderland

Arizona provided the sunshine and warm weather and Dobson Ranch provided the snow!

It was a beautiful day at the Annual Winter Wonderland event. The fun afternoon portion of this event was well attended as parents watched kids play in the snow, make crafts, play games and walk for cupcakes. Santa will be very busy reading all the letters that were written to him!

Then at 6:30 pm it was time to start the evening festivities. Dobson Ranch residents, families and friends lined up to drink hot chocolate, munch on popcorn and cookies, take a boat ride and watch the highly anticipated and beautiful boat parade.

The evening remained festive with the sound of carolers from school groups. This great tradition will be happening again in 2016‌ don’t miss it!

Another successful year for the Dobson Ranch Retirees Club is coming to an end. Our membership continues to grow and activities continue to be very popular.

Just check the list of activities listed near this article. A big thank you to Lucille Willgale for standing in for me after my operation. She not only took over the meetings, but as you may know she wrote a few articles for the RoundUp. Our membership has just topped 160 and our November general meeting was attended by 102 people. As usual, the hospitality committee prepared and served a great turkey lunch. A representative from Desert Schools Credit Union gave a presentation on Estate Planning which was very interesting and informative to our club members. After the meeting, our Board of Directors decided to make a donation of $200.00 to the Child Crisis Center as part of our continuing service to our community.

A new slate of club officers was presented and unamously elected for next year. Of course, they were unopposed making the voting easy. As tradition has it, I was elected to serve as President another year which will be my last year according to our bylaws. Kevin Collins will be Vice President, Jean Duke will be Secretary, and Carolyn Sedlak will be our new Treasures. Outgoing officers Lucille Willgale, Mary Statsman and Dovie Bryant did a great job and deserve a big thank you for serving.

Our new Vice President, Kevin Collins has agreed to write some articles for the Round Up next year. He will focus on interviewing some of our most active and long term members for his articles. This will give everyone a better idea of our activities and some of the members who give so much to the Club.

RETIREES SCHEDULE GENERAL MEETING Monday, January 4th will be the Retirees Club first meeting of 2016 at the La Casita Recreation Center. Coffee at 9:30AM and the meeting will begin at 10AM. Lunch will be served after the meeting and program. All guests and prospective new members are welcome! Deposits for this year’s April four day trip to Laughlin are due at this meeting.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING The monthly Retirees Board of Directors will meeting on Monday, January 18th at 9AM at La Casita. For all officers, committee chairs and activity leaders.

The Club’s bicycle riders will meet at 5PM at the Armstrong residence and then follow a parade route in and around the Saratoga Lake portions of Dobson Ranch stopping several times to sing Christmas Carols. FREE WHEELERS AND SLO SPOKES BICYCLE GROUPS The Free Wheelers meet every Tuesday at 8AM at the Dobson Library for bike rides of approximately 20-25 miles. On Fridays, the Slo Spokes bike riders meet at 9AM at the Library for rides of approximately 10-12 miles. Both rides are social rides, with a refreshment break and are not fast and are laid out to avoid busy streets, mostly riding on multi use pathways, greenbelts and residential side streets. Arnie Chase is our bike leader for both rides and can be reached at 480-838-4124. Bicycle helmets are required on all rides.

HIKING There are many hikers in the Retirees Club and they meet every Wednesday at 8AM at La Casita Recreation Center. From there they carpool to various trail heads surrounding the Valley.

Hikes are social, generally in the 3 to 4 mile range and hike details are furnished to the hikers several days earlier. Ed Eppley is the hiking leader and can be reached at 480-656-4530.

Merry Christmas...and a Happy New Year. Is it me or did this year slide by very fast? Sam was sitting in the Dobson Ranch 1st float for the Mesa Veterans parade.

Thank you for your service to our country. Thank you to the HOA for another fun Fall Fest. It gets better every year. Jesse and the Recreation Staff did a great job.

The boat parade was a huge success...thanks to all the “Yacht’s” decorators for all their time and talents in continuing to help kick off the Dobson HOA Christmas Season. Santa came for breakfast and the Retirees became his Elfs. Thanks for all you do too.

Our out to lunch group went to Ivy’s in Chandler...wonderful food and service. Try it.

Let’s talk water! The January 5 Garden Club meeting, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at La Casita, will focus on the various aspects of water conservation. Becky Zusy, conservation coordinator with the City of Mesa, will talk about water conservation, the current state of water in Arizona and the City of Mesa’s grass-to-xeriscape rebate.

In addition, she will be available to answer any questions the group may have. So bring your water questions to the January 5 Garden Club meeting. All Ranch residents and their guests are welcome.

Ahhhhhh. The beautiful Fall. I have heard some of my friends complaining about the cold. Really!!!!!!!

Everything is in transition in the desert as we are grabbing our jackets in the morning but basking in the afternoon sunshine. Same with the fish- they are in transition. As often stated in this column, climate probably affects our lakes more immediately and with a little bit more kick than larger lakes because they are so shallow, and so responsive to stimulus. In the fall, fish are on the move. They are fattening up for colder wintertime water temperatures. So, the feeding cycle gets longer and you can catch fish all day long. But it is still fishing- not catching. Within the broad window, there are still times when the fish are shut down. So if you have to win, you have to play. So put your time in on the water. For bass, reaction baits become a very good selection. If you can’t catch them on top or with crankbaits or spinnerbaits or swimbaits, then use plastics in various presentations like dropshot or shakey head or Texas rig until you unlock the formula. If you don’t know what I am talking about in reference to these lure selections, google these rigs- and then try them on the lake. Please practice careful catch and release.

Look for our wintertime birds coming in. The coots came back in late October. We see our domestic geese which call home on the golf course flying across the street to our lakes.

But we will see migratory geese, as well as the teals and other migratory duck critters coming back. Our Dobson Ranch ecosystem is truly a wonder to watch through the seasons.

There are a few different ways you can help give your geriatric furbaby a longer, happier, healthier life. ~ Bring in your furbaby for semi-annual wellness exams. During these examinations, the Veterinarian will complete a full physical from nose to tail and discuss different health concerns he/she may have regarding your pet. ~ Monitor your senior pet for any significant changes in lifestyle. Merry Main Street Returning to Downtown Mesa Merry Main Street is back, after a decade hiatus, bigger and better than ever from now through January 3 in downtown Mesa. Merry Main Street, a winter holiday festival presented by SRP, will have an exciting variety of activities to help you celebrate the season. Among the activities are an ice skating rink, community performances at the Mesa Arts Center, a downtown Main Street market place, food truck forest and a giant Christmas tree complete with lights, ornaments and other festive decorations. The three-story tree is on the southeast corner of Main Street and Macdonald in front of Bank of America. You can ride the light rail for FREE during Merry Main Street between Country Club Drive and Mesa Drive. The Merry Main Express will have stops at Country Club Drive, Center Street and Mesa Drive daily from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. through Dec. 31.

Read Down Your Fines at Mesa Public Library Children under the age of 18 can reduce their library fees by reading for 20-minutes a day from Nov. 23 through Dec. 31. For every 20-minutes that a child reads or is read to, the Library will waive $1 towards overdue fees.
