IRS WARNS OF NEW TWIST TO PHONE SCAM!
The interior of a vehicle can heat up 20 degrees in 10 minutes. In 60 degree weather a vehicle can heat up above 110 degrees! Children are especially vulnerable since their body temperatures can rise 5 times faster than an adult. Leaving a child or a pet in a vehicle is potentially fatal, and could be a criminal offense. If you ever see a child or a pet in distress because they are unattended in a vehicle, call 911 immediately. If you feel that the child or pet is in imminent danger of injury or death, after you call 911 you may make entry into the vehicle, but you must stay with the child or pet until paramedics and officers arrive.
In this scam, callers posing as IRS agents advise the victims that two certified letters were sent to the taxpayer in the mail but were returned as undeliverable. They then threaten to arrest the potential victim if payment is not made immediately through a prepaid debit card. The scammer also tells the victim that the purchase of the card is linked to the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) system: IT IS NOT! They are also advised not to contact their tax preparer, an attorney or the local IRS office until the tax payment is made. That should be a Big Red Flag! What you should do if you receive this phone call: 1. If you are immediately aware that it’s a scam, don’t engage with the scammer and do not give out any information—JUST HANG UP! 2. If in doubt of the legitimacy of the caller, hang up immediately and call the IRS directly (1– 800-829-1040) for information 3. Don’t ever call them back and never give them payment from a debit or credit card Remember—The IRS will never: 1. Call to demand payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes without first having mailed you a bill (this is true even with the use of private debt collectors) 2. Threaten to bring in local police or other law enforcement to arrest you 3. Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card or gift card.
