observations and conversations There’s a lot of pent up capital and a persistent itch to make more money; a good combo to generate deals and I think it will be obvious at this year’s RECon that deals are getting done. Ann O’Neal Vegas! Wow, business for most of us has really picked up in the past six months, and I think that will help make for an extremely productive convention. This year, ICSC added another hall to the show and there are sections of the floor devoted to the “Marketplace Mall,” with vendors selling everything from lighting fixtures to mapping software, in addition to the “Technology and Social Media Pavilion.” Starting on Sunday, when the Marketplace Mall officially opens, the ICSC has a half-day session on Facebook, blogging, Twitter and other forms of social media with more sessions for the duration of the show on mobile apps, mapping and modeling, LinkedIn and mobile marketing. On Sunday, Malcolm Gladwell is the keynote speaker and, if by chance you don’t recognize the name, he wrote several books that study the human condition and how people respond to situations, things and other people. He’s a very interesting speaker and well worth forgoing a few hours at the pool to go see. Also on Sunday, the ICSC is hosting a slew of Special Interest Group discussions, which will be followed by the cocktail party. Monday is the big day with the opening of the Leasing Mall and I can’t wait. This show will be my 31st ICSC Convention in Las Vegas and my hunch is that it will be one of the most active that I’ve experienced in three decades. There’s a lot of pent up capital and a persistent itch to make more money; a good combo to generate deals and I think it will be obvious at this year’s RECon that deals are getting done. This issue of The Dealmakers is our Pre-RECon special edition and on pages 50-52 is the floor plan of the convention to help guide you to your appointments. We will also include a floor plan of the convention halls in our show special edition, which will be delivered to every attendee’s hotel room at ICSC-designated hotels, so be sure to look for a copy in front of your door. Besides ICSC Today, I think The Dealmakers will be the only publication that will be delivered to every door and if you’re not in an ICSC designated hotel, you can find a copy of The Dealmakers at newsstands in our booth, S283 Q Street, and within a number of our advertisers’ booths as well. We’re still at the same spot in the South Hall, but we have a new booth design this year. No more lemonade stand, but it gets better… we’ll be giving away lots of prizes including iPads, iPods, free subscriptions to The Dealmakers and Tenant Search, our online directory of retail chains, plus free Eblasts. We’ll also be giving away gift cards for iTunes, Starbucks and too many to name, so make sure you stop by our booth and drop off your business card to enter the drawing. Look for our Prize Crew. They’ll be wearing red t-shirts with “The Dealmakers Prize Crew” on the back and they can take your business card to enter the drawing too. The winners will be famous; we’re photographing and videotaping the presentation of prizes to post on Twitter and Facebook, so that should be entertaining to watch. I’m looking forward to catching up with old friends, reminiscing about a few that aren’t with us anymore, and making some new ones at RECon. For the past few years, I’ve been regulated to my booth, page 6

however this year my plan is to walk every aisle and visit as many exhibitors as possible in two and a half days. (My shoes are broken in and my back is strong, so walking 10 to 20 miles over the course of a few days should be doable even at my age!) The party invites are unbelievable this year, I’m not sure how I’m going to hit all of them, but it will be fun trying and at least I have enough practice to pace myself. You can still have lots of fun at the show, but we’re in Vegas to make lots of deals too. On that note, we have some incredible leads on expanding chains, new retail spin offs and sources of capital in our RECon show issue. Children’s Learning Adventure, Kid to Kid, Cheap Skates and Parmida Home Concepts, all of which are actively growing and looking for new locations, are a few of the features in the RECON special edition. Also, the special edition includes our State of the Industry report giving an overview of how the shopping center industry is faring with a recovery, what kind of deals retailers are making and who’s lending. The Dealmakers’ annual report is a must read with insight from some our industry’s most talented dealmakers. Our RECon issue also has an interesting interview with Veronique Longo of Hutensky Capital regarding using private equity and joint venture funding in today’s lending environment. I’ll bet anyone two dozen doughnuts that they’ll find a lead in our special edition that turns into a done deal, so make sure you pick up a copy to take back with you after the show. Subscribers also have access to an early preview of the RECON special edition at www.dealmakers.net – the entire magazine, advertisements and all, will be available online, so you can prepare and set up appointments with our advertisers and the retailers that we’ve written about well before the show. As an old timer now, the best advice I can give on how to make RECon a productive show is to meet as many people as you can. Yes, appointments are important, but just as important are the impromptu social encounters with people in the industry that may spark a great opportunity in the future. I can’t count how many deals that I’ve done over years with people that I initially met in a cab line or a hotel bar during the ICSC’s convention. Friendships that I’ve made in the shopping center business have not only been fun, but we made lots of deals together too. My next best piece of advice is to wear comfortable shoes, because no matter what after three days of being on the convention floor your feet are going to hurt. (I wanted to add to our list of prizes Dr. Scholl’s foot pads and boxes of band aids for blisters, but it’s more fun to win an iPad than to have pain free feet.) I’m almost out of space, so again everyone stop by our booth at S283 Q Street in the South Hall and have a fantastic show. Here’s to making more deals,

Ann O’Neal, Publisher
