8TH Grade “MOVING ON” MEMORIES As school comes to an end, students are excitedly awaiting for the summer come soon.

But for 8th graders, the ending of school this year does not only mark summer, but also the beginning of high school. Here are some of the 8th graders most unforgettable Day memories that they will carry with them throughout high school:

SCIENCE UNDER ATTACK

Our new Chief Executive has repeatedly shown his skepticism of modern sciences, calling climate change a hoax and “created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive” in a Twitter post in 2012. He also possesses a well-documented hatred of wind turbines, explained only by their “ugliness” and supposed “bird-killing” properties. At times, Trump can seem ignorant of basic scientific facts. His total censoring of EPA and Department of Agriculture scientists raised more than a few eyebrows, and with good reason. Quashing scientific transparency is unconstitutional, as the American people have the right to learn about modern advancements. If incorrect data and doubt is spread in the absence of updates from actual scientists, the line between fact and fiction, already muddied by many scientific controversies, will become even less distinct. Evergreen student Skyler Bohnert had this to say “Trump has no idea what the main issues are. He ignores facts

sitting right in front of him, and sticks to his personal bias. He discriminates based on religion and race - if he continues, he is no better than a Dictator.”

Additionally, some of Trump’s new executive orders could affect some of the major water supplies that provide us fresh, clean H2O. Every single mainland state in America derives some water from “ephemeral and intermittent” rivers, a phrase from a 2008 report by the EPA called the The Ecological and Hydrological Significance of Ephemeral and Intermittent Streams in the Arid and Semi-arid American Southwest. All of those rivers would be unprotected under his proposed changes to the Clean Water Act. This act protects water sources from pollution, be it through sewage or radioactive, industrial and agricultural waste. If the protected river specifications are removed, companies will be allowed to freely dump dangerous materials into freshwater eventually drunk by animals and humans. In fact, areas in Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho receive as much as 90% of their “clean water” from sources that Trump is willing to ruin.

Eighth grader David Li had this to say on the subject, “It’s obviously just to benefit himself… when you cut one [budget], you resupply another”.

This is potentially not as bad as it might seem, however, since the P.O.T.U.S’ aggression towards scientists may actually help bridge the divide between them and the American people.

His actions encourage scientists, regardless of political views, to share their findings directly with the citizenry and be more vocal in the Internet community,

circumventing possible censure.

Trump’s anti-science message resonated with conservative voters for a reason, after all; according to Scientific American’s Tom Nichols, scientists are “disdained not for their work, but for being part of an undifferentiated mass of “experts” whom a fair number of Americans now view as, at best, a suspect political class, and, at worst, as an enemy, ” Maybe that suspicion will die down in the next four years and America will believe in science again. One thing’s for sure, however- the fear our P.O.T.U.S has struck into the scientific community isn’t going away

Phia Teller, a teenager and advocate for women's rights, had this to say, “I think that this tax is still in place because of idiot men who don't understand that menstruation isn't an excuse or something to downplay, it is a real burden that many women have to deal with and it should be a necessity, not a ‘luxury,’ and that women should have access to products that will make it easier for them.”

For some this tax does not mean much, but for a person living in poverty, it can cause menstrual products to become unaffordable. People who experience periods that are homeless or living in homeless shelters may not even be able to afford menstrual products. And that’s without the tax. They are forced to improvise using clothes, rags, or even complementary napkins.

Heather Rose, director of Friendly Manor Homeless Shelter, had this

to say, “I have seen women come in who have made homemade tampons and pads going into toxic shock syndrome,”director of a homeless shelter, A Friendly Manor, Heather Rose.On average, women spend over $2,000 on pads and tampons in their lifetime. This does not include the cost of other things necessary for a period, such as pain medication, new underwear, and other personal needs. Bronwyn Chochinov, a high school student who lives in New York, which currently has a luxury tax on tampons, had this to say, “I think it's ridiculous that products like Viagra and dandruff shampoo are listed as ‘necessary items’ when women around the country and the entire world can't go to work or school because of their period. Menstruation shouldn't be a taboo topic.” For people at an economical disadvantage, living day to day while carefully budgeting money for food and shelter, having a period can put them in the difficult position of deciding whether to attend to their own personal needs or to feed their family.

It is time to get rid of the tampon tax and declassify it as a “luxury” item. Anyone who has a period should have a right to get all menstrual products needed whenever their cycle comes.

“I don’t know anyone who has a period who thinks it’s a luxury.” This was former President Obama’s response when a public figure in the media brought up the fact that there is a tax on pads and tampons. When the word tampon came up in that conversation, or when it arises in any conversation at all, the word luxury isn’t usually the first thing that comes to mind. However, according to The Washington Post, 80% of state governments place a

luxury tax on menstrual products. In Massachusetts, someone would not find a luxury or sales tax on menstrual items. Yet if they cross the border to Connecticut and attempted to purchase sanitary items, there would be a non-necessity, or a luxury tax, on tampons and pads.

Having a period is not a luxury, nor is it a choice. Women who experience periods are being forced to pay for the effects of an anatomically unchangeable truth. Every month, people who have to deal with a natural cycle in order to keep themselves healthy should not be deprived of their right of being hygienic. Alexa Kwon, an eighth grader on the Emerald Team, has said that, “I think it’s stupid because tampons are considered luxury items in some states even though they’re necessary for people who have periods, and they shouldn’t be taxed.”

R A I N B O W Peace Flags Popping Up Around The Day Community

By Senior Editor Gwen Bankmann Recently, rainbow flags that have peace written across the front have been popping up all over Newton. There has been a buzz all around the community about what the flags represent.

Newton parent Amy Burns, had this to say, “It [the rainbow peace flag] shows diversity in all the different communities and it’s perfect in this crazy political climate because it says all the things that I want to say.” These flags are the start of a movement called, “The Rainbow Peace Flag Project” which spreads the message that everyone is welcome.

These flags first started becoming popular around the after the shooting in Orlando on June twelfth. The rainbow represents acknowledgment of the LGBTQ community. More recently on August twenty-third a gay couple in Natick, Massachusetts had a peace flag hanging outside of their house stolen. The next day their home was egged because of their encouragement of members

of the LGBTQ community.

One of the creators of the Rainbow Peace Flag Project traveled to Europe and noticed the rainbow peace flags flying high above churches, schools, homes and other public buildings. The creators of the Rainbow Peace Flag Project noticed that this wasn’t the case in America. People all over the world don’t feel that they would be welcome or accepted in America because of their sexuality, race or religion. According to metrowestdailynews.com, “Flying the flags around Natick could be a sign that the community is welcoming to immigrants, people of color, members of the LGBTQ community and others.” They decided that these flags could welcome everyone to America and support their neighbors. The flag and it’s message started off in Natick but spread to Newton and most of the Metrowest area.

In an attempt to unite the community, the Common Street Spiritual Center in Natick started handing out these flags

for free. Many members of the community started to chip in and help distribute the flags, and even children would ride bikes around Natick to deliver these flags. According to chuffed.org, “The rainbow peace flag is displayed throughout the world as a sign of diversity and inclusiveness,”. This plan to unite the community is now known as the “Rainbow Peace Flag Project” and is being spread all across Northeastern

Massachusetts. People can help contribute to the Rainbow Peace Flag Project by donating to it on chuffed.org. So far this project has raised over $7,000 and more than 3,000 flags have been handed out in Natick. Flags can be picked up at the Common Street Spiritual Center, the Roots & Wings Yoga and Healing Arts, the First Congregational Church of Natick and the Eliot Church of Natick. Let’s spread this message all over Newton and make everyone feel welcome!

Phones deemed a distraction, causing dismay for some

By Benjamin Wong Selfies, Snapchats, texting, and tweets were just some of the daily activities taken away from students due to MCAS testing. With the frightening potential consequence of phones being seized if caught, many have ceased taking them to school altogether. Students in every grade are freaking out as they still cannot access their devices between sessions of MCAS. Without access to the outside world, complications have arisen.

Sixth grader, Finn Delaney remembers his exact reaction when hearing about the ban, simply saying, “Noooo!”

Pros and cons of completely shutting off phones weighed from high to low, being minor nuisances to some while being concerning to others. Eighth grader, Peter Campbell said, “There will be far less Snapchatting and social media interfering in class.” On the other hand, seventh grader Tim Kwartler said, “It would be more difficult for parents to reach their kids at school in an emergency.” Another unforeseen predicament that has supposedly risen is speed, as eighth grader Diego Gonzalez said, “The phones aren’t as much of a problem, but

Randy Meyer, Librarian of Awesomeness

By Recca Kellstein and Emma McBride Many people know and love Randy Meyer, Day’s librarian.

In Day’s community he is known as a helpful, caring, amazing person.

He has been working here for 19 years, but it is sadly coming to a close. At the end of this year, he is leaving F.A. Day Middle School. We decided to interview him, for he is such an impactful member of this community.

What are some of your fondest memories at F.A. Day? “Book talks, in general.

I love doing book talks and then one year at Winter Fest we did a flash mob. A bunch of teachers just wandered onto the gym floor and started doing this dance that we had been practicing.”

Were you in the flash mob?

“It was pajama day, so we didn’t wear costumes. All the teachers had choreographed this thing, and we had been secretly rehearsing in the exercise room after school.”

What do you look for in a good book?

“Well, I choose them by reading book reviews that are geared toward librarians. So if I can make it through the entire book review without getting bored, that's a good thing. I try to think of what kind of a reader would like that book, think of the kids I talk to and that sort of thing. I tend to,

“I get money from both the principal and the PTO, they are very generous which is great otherwise there wouldn’t be as much in the library.”

What do you do with the books you get rid of?

“That is my favorite thing to do.

It’s called weeding, just like you do in a garden, it’s where you go through the shelves and looks and see like ‘nobody has touched this book in 10 years.’”

How can you tell if no one has touched it?

“The date stamp in the back, and I probably could look in the computer system and print out a report of books that haven’t been checked out in a while. I sort of have a sense of, since I’m the one doing all the checking out, this books hasn’t been touched in awhile. And sometimes it’s not because the book itself isn’t good, it’s because of the way the cover looks. Sometimes I will just look and see if there newer additions with newer covers in them.”

What are some of the down sides to being a librarian?

“I’m sure there must be some, I don’t know, it’s the best job I’ve ever had in my entire life.

I’m very happy. But downsides, sometimes when it’s really quiet in here, it’s too quiet. When there's nobody in here, there's nobody working on a project, I don’t have any classes. That’s when it gets really quiet and I have to find projects to do when I’d much rather do stuff with classes.”

How do you think you’ve impacted the students?

“I hope that kids who've had bad experiences in libraries before, maybe think about them a little differently. I hope that students will think of librarians as people who want to help them. I like working with kids who don’t like to read because that’s a really big challenge, kids who come in and love to read, well that's easy, anybody can do that. But I really want to help kids who have not had a good experience with books, that I’ve been able to show them something that opened their mind

a little bit, and changed their mind a little bit.”

What did you want to be when you grew up? A Librarian?

“I have done many different things. I never thought of this when I was younger or growing up. I never thought that I’d become a librarian. I think often of schools when I was growing up, and we often didn’t have a librarian. It wasn’t until I was working in college as a librarian that I thought ‘oh, this is kind of interesting.’ I didn’t do it for another year.”

You mentioned you have had other careers; like what?

“Well my undergraduate degree was in theatre, and I worked backstage as a customs person for a number of years for touring shows, Broadway shows. I lived in Los Angeles, that’s where I grew up. I spent nearly two years of my life helping people in the show, change their costumes really quickly. Which was really fun, but not the most intellectually stimulating work. It was kind of fun back then, when I was in my 20’s to do that. Then I was looking for something else, and then for a while I worked in a variety of magazine publishing jobs, like a writer and an editor. It was kind of fun, very isolating to sit in a cubicle and write all day long. So, I decided to do this and it has been much, much better.”

What will you miss most about F.A. Day? “The kids, without a doubt. I won’t miss having to read like 40 or 50 books a year, that aren't necessarily my choice. I will miss being surrounded by middle school students, very much.”

Dorin, 7th grade: “ One day I was sick and then I skipped P.E. for a day and he let me choose what flavor of tea I wanted. So he basically let me sleep in the library.”

Mira Dreitlein, 8th grade: “He has helped me pick out the most fantastic books. I’ve loved all of them so much! It’s such a shame he is leaving, I’m going to miss him so much.”

Jennifer Fiske, Guidance counselor: “He is always been a friendly face, and he is very helpful in many situations.”

Christine Sherman, Instructional Support: “He has always been very supportive to students and staff.”

Catherine Hartzel, Literacy lab, Daytime Adviser: “He is incredibly kind and compassionate. He has encouraged many of my Lit Lab students to engage in great books he has assisted them in selecting. Also, he has agreed to be interviewed on many occasions by Daytime staff, and always has insightful points to make Ria Mehrotra, 7th grade: “ He helped me find a nonfiction book for my class project.”

Kianna Hill, 7th grade : “He will reserve a book for you if you are reading the first book, which is really spectacular.”

Kourtney Price Berdet, 8th grade: “Everytime I check a book out he remembers my name. I don’t know how he does itbut he does.”

Arsema Kifle, 8th grade: “He’s always so kind when walk in the door. He’s all smiles when you think about it. I’ve never walked into the library and seen him frowning.”

Emma Kellstein, 6th grade: “ He is really good at giving book talks and giving book recommendations.”

Rosie Fawzi, 8th grade: “He always knows where the books are. He knows how to make a mark.”

Luke LeBrun, 7th grade: Mr. Meyer has helped me find out of the ordinary books and I have really enjoyed them.

Riley Fitzgerald, 8th grade: “He helps me when I want to find a good book. It’s sad that the next 6th graders won’t get to have him as their librarian.”

Taking a sneak peek into the electives

Whether students find themselves creatively expressing themselves through art, editing and writing articles in attempt for their work to be published, or running around the gym, playing games that keep your heart beating and your feet moving, F.A. Middle School has a option for all, but many find the choice to be overwhelming. Many kids may have some idea of what electives are from the short blurbs on the packets that are handed out, or from friends that have taken the class, but it helps to get the inside scoop from students who currently take the elective.

Write Way:

Nejma Reza: “I like that we get to learn new writing techniques and we get to learn how to work with partners on certain articles.“[We have learned] vocabulary, description, and just the way of how to write like a journalist. ...and it’s hard because we have to have the responsibilities.”

Robyn Herbert, 6th grader:“I really like that you get closer to

people you never thought that you really would be friends with. I also really like the feeling of getting published,” Sarper Parker, 6th grader had this to say “ You get to do a bunch of writing. It’s hard to come up with the name of your article.

Art Beyond the Basics:

Poppy Needham: “ [I like that] you get to do whatever you want when you're finished with the project. (My least favorite part) is when you have to wait for everyone else.

Kelsey Mcphail: “We do lots of different art projects and the teacher allows you to finish even if the rest of the group is moving on; you don’t have a deadline.

Sometimes the project takes a long time to finish.”

Academic Support Teacher of Excellence: COLIN CORKERY

Colin Corkery, an academic support teacher on Cobalt has decided to retire after being a teacher for 29 years and working at Day for 24 years of his teaching experience. As the end of the school year comes closer, Colin Corkery finally has a chance to do something new.

What was your favorite experience while working at day?

“I've had so many great experiences working at Day. One year the team I was on had the students form small groups of three to five students, and then create a ‘business’ that they would present to the team. The groups met during community period for many weeks. One group made up a buisness called ‘Pamper your Pet’ where they would play with the pet, feed the pet, and groom the pet, for their presentation, I brought in my English bulldog, Fanny, to be used in the demonstration. She was a hit, and very

pampered that day.”

Why do you want to retire?

What will you do after? “ ’Im retiring because i’ve been teaching since 1981 - thirty-six years ago! I started teaching at the New England Home for Little Wanderers, and i’m ready for a new challenge now which I think I will include doing some coaching with runners. I’m also heading to Australia and New Zealand in the fall. I’m going to visit my daughter who will be going to school in Sydney.”

Why did you want to become a teacher?

“I took a year off from college, and worked in an elementary school in Larchmont N.Y. as an aide in a special education classroom, and really enjoyed it. DAY SHOULD HAVE A GSA

By Ashante Love According to lgbtqnation.com, “A bus with a transphobic message painted on it visited Boston this week, and the mayor responded by raising the transgender flag outside City Hall.” Given such occurrences, F.A Day should be a sanctuary against hate, and people agree that there should be a GSA, a Gay Straight Alliance, where a group of people who are part of the LGBT community and who aren’t able to get to learn more and express themselves. Mark Aronson had this to say, “Absolutely. Why wouldn’t we support a student organization like a Gay Straight Alliance? Having been present at Newton North when we started a Gay Straight Alliance, many years ago, I have seen first hand the positive impact it has on students, staff and the community.” At one [point, Day has a GSA and teach

er leader, but it ended when that teacher left.

A GSA is built on the idea of learning to understand that difference and change isn’t a bad thing, and to possibly help students discover themselves. According to gsanetwork.org, “In addition to support, some GSAs work on educating themselves and the broader school community about sexual orientation and gender identity issues.”

Many people don’t always know the best way to go about helping a member of the LGBT community, even if the likelihood of there being an act of hatred against LGBT community at F.A Day is extremely rare. It wouldn’t hurt to have a safe and controlled environment to help answer people’s questions, and review people's plans and fears. According to nwitimes.com, “Bullying hasn’t always been a

problem in high school. We don’t judge each other's opinions” Speaking to Aronson opened a new light to the possibilities F.A Day could do to provide support to the community.

More voices could be heard and more lives can change. Aronson had this to say: “I don't want to generalize any group of students experiences, but I know that many gay students in middle school feel unrepresented and disrespected.

Also, I know that gay teenagers are more likely to experience depression, isolation and have suicidal thoughts to a greater extent than their peers. So having a place for those students to get together, hang out and share their experiences in a safe space would be

helpful for them” People are seeing the sad but true facts of discrimination and bullying, but many strongly believe that having a middle school GSA would greatly improve our community and further our understanding for one another. GSAs provide shelter from unwanted hate and are a place for learning and healing. Middle schoolers are just starting down the long road down identity lane. Being with people who help nurture difference and change are the ones who get the farthest in life.

Sci/Tech spotlight. The two most popular fidget toys at the moment are the fidget cubes and the fidget spinners. Many of the students at F. A. Day were hoping that these fidget toys would replace slime for good, but that may not be the case now. These fascinating toys were banned from F.A Day as of April 11th. 6th grader Poppy Needham had this to say about the ban, “I don’t think fidgets should be banned, people need them.”

One of these fidget toys is the Fidget Spinner. It is a little hand-held spinner that has three disks on each side of a larger center disk to hold while it spins. When asked her opinion on this exciting new gadget, Vivienne La Camera, a 6th grader had this to say, “It’s fun and it gives you something to do during class.” Unlike other fidgets, the fidget spinner is almost completely silent when first out of the package. But after the first few uses, teachers find it extremely distracting to the student using the toy, and to them as they are teaching a lesson. On the

website addictivespinners.com, the prices range from $7.99 to $37.89. According to Forbes.com, “It may not sound like it, but these fidget toys -- the Cube included -- could very well improve your day-to-day [life] by giving you an innocuous outlet for your nervous or bored energy.”

The Fidget Cube, unlike the Fidget Spinner is a small cube that one can hold in the palm of their hand and fiddle with under the table. Each side on the cube has a different object, including a dial, three gears, a joystick, a simple switch, six buttons, and a soothing imprint where users can rest their thumbs. Many people find that the combination of these things helps reduce anxiety. It is not only kids who enjoy these though; many adults find it helps with their daily life. This is much better than an alternative such as playing on a phone, loudly chewing gum, or doing nothing. This is what a website that sells these fidgets; kickstarter.

Some educators find these toys distracting and a nuisance to teach a class with. Samuel Kobayashi, a 6th grade Science teacher, had this to say, “They look like a lot of fun to play with.

Some students claim that they help them focus, but I think more often, they distract students.”

This is exactly what Principal Mark Aronson said in an email sent out to Day parents and teachers, “While there may be a practical application for a very small group of our students, the large majority of our students do not need them.” He also mentions the difficulty of teaching while students have them in class.

This is the primary reason for the ban. These fidgets shall never be forgotten.

WARNING: SLIME may contain hazardous materials ...so

here’s safer way to make some

Although homemade slime may be gooey, stretchy, and satisfying, most recipes include Borax, a toxic chemical normally used for cleaning. The chemical can be very dangerous and harm people when they are exposed to it. Naomi Wolfe, a seventh grader, said: “I think that slime is a fun aspect of middle schoolers’ lives currently, but the effects of the Borax is very harmful and just a waste of time and space.”

Some may think that Borax is harmful only if it is ingested, which has been shown to make people vomit and give them rashes. In fact, Borax can be harmful in other ways too. First, if you are playing with slime you are likely to inhale it. Also, the Borax will get on your hands. If it gets on your hands then you might touch your mouth, nose, eyes, or other people. The effects of these are vomiting, eye irritation, nausea, skin rash, oral irritation, and respiratory effects. Ava Guzman, a seventh grader said: “If you decide to play with slime make sure you wash your hands really really well.”

icals Agency has labelled Borax ‘toxic to reproduction’, as follows: “This substance may damage fertility or the unborn child and causes serious eye irritation.”

There has been a lot of research that states that Borax based slime could influence the health of children who play with it. According to thestar.com, “Health Canada is advising Canadians to avoid using boric acid for arts and crafts projects, such as homemade slime, or modelling clay.” Sam Melville, a seventh grader, said: “It’s just like a worse version of putty because it’s more messy, it’s less fun, and it’s expensive so I don’t really understand why people like it so much. Also, Borax is toxic and very dangerous- especially if you have pets and it falls on the ground- and not many people actually use it for laundry, so the Borax is also just a waste of money.”

Alicia Munroe, a seventh grader, had this to say: “I think that people should just make Borax-free slime.” Luckily, even though the Borax is harmful, there are still plenty other recipes for slime using a substitute for Borax. When choosing a fidget, considering the health effects might be a good idea.

This (safer) popular recipe uses contact lense solution instead of Borax water. It is just as squishy and awesome.

For this version you will need: glue contact solution dish soap food coloring lotion (optional).

First, mix a large amount of contact solution into the glue and stir well. Then pour in some dish soap, and stir slightly.

The slime should clump together. Add more of needed materials if slime is not desired consistency. To add coloring, mix in food coloring. Add lotion to make it more stretchy.

HYPERLOOP CONCEPT: SPEEDING INTO REALITY

An incredible and rapid change in computing is occurring; However, no such changes appear to be happening to the transportation industry. People of the past dreamed of zipping from one place to another without the use of cars and planes.

Yet the streets are still packed with cars and the skies riddled with planes, belching carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gasses.

Nonetheless, the transportation tubes of Futurama may not be a fragment of cartoon viewers’ imaginations for long. The mastermind behind Tesla and SpaceX, Elon Musk, has proposed the concept of the Hyperloop, an invention that is set to change the transportation industry for generations to come.

Musk’s Hyperloop is made of two monstrous steel tubes stretching from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Passengers will travel through the tubes in pods capable of seating 28 peopleMag-

However, this puts an extreme amount of pressure on the pods.

Ever since the rise of global warming on the mainstream news, the conserving of natural materials has always been an important issue. Actions such as electric battery vehicles, shutting down massive factories and limiting energy use at home have all been taken in halting the massive threat and buying time for further measures.

One such culprit is the ever-growing amount of plastic bags that appear in grocery stores worldwide. Although they are helpful when it comes to storing purchases, their presence only pollutes the surrounding nature.

According to the website One Green Planet, several sea animals such as sperm whales and sea turtles have died from plastic ingestion. However, nations are finding ways to combat this growing crisis, including the North African nation of Morocco, which

has decided to put a ban on plastic bags entirely.

For Morocco, this action has been in the workings for years ever since 2009, when an effort to cease the use of black plastic bags which flooded streets was only slightly successful. Morocco is the second-largest consumer of plastic bags following the United States. About three billion plastic

bags are used every year, which that each of the nation’s thirty-four million inhabitants use around nine-hundred bags per year. Several campaigns to raise awareness of the environmental harm the bags are causing spread throughout the country.

Mamoun Ghallab, a sustainable development consultant, had this to say, “They do it to promote the image of Morocco as a friendly country, which is partly true, but not completely.”

He also noted that while several citizens have received word of the issue, the government itself is not doing much to inform the people of the plastic bag crisis.

On the other hand, the parliament of Morocco passed a bill which banned the production, sale, distribution and import of all plastic bags. In response to this, shops and street vendors hoarded reusable bags and placed them into reserves for later use. Jennie Romer, a lawyer from New York, said, “It’s a big cultural shift with that type of broader law. As long as the government has the motivation

to really enforce that. There is a lot of potential. The government entity that is implementing it has to be completely on board in order to make that really happen in practice.” Romer also points out that it will take time for the public to adapt to the law.

This is yet another action done by Morocco to limit the amount of carbon emissions from products within its borders.

Because of this, the North African nation ranks with Bhutan, Costa Rica and Ethiopia as some of the world’s “greenest” countries.

Worldwide, people are receiving word of this great act against pollution. Nico Bauer, an Emerald student, had this to say, “What Morocco’s citizens have done is amazing. I believe that what they are doing could start a revolution, one that could change the world

for the better.”

Hopefully in time, other nations will follow in Morocco’s steps and take similar actions to restrict tools of pollution. Working together, the world can be made into a better place for everyone.

The disease has only been spotted on the west coast of The Americas. It has spread from South America to the west tip of Canada, which means it is focused to one area.

By Nico Cochran and Vincent Mastroianni Today, Mother’s and Father’s day are usually celebrated with special cards and breakfast in bed. Even though these holidays are so widely celebrated, it was not always like this.

Mother's Day Anna Jarvis, daughter of a military nurse, started a campaign for a national Mother's Day when her mother died. Her mother had said that mother’s do not get enough appreciation so Anna decided to carry on her mother’s legacy. She made a day honouring all mothers. Mother’s day was born.

The first non-official celebration of Mother’s Day was in Grafton, West Virginia when

Anna held a memorial for her mother at St. Andrews Methodist church. In 1908, the US Congress had rejected the proposal to make mothers day an official holiday claiming that they would then need to make a “Mother-inlaw day”. By 1911 all US states observed the holiday making some of them announced it as a local holiday, the first of them being West Virginia, Jarvis’s home state. Her persistence in make mother’s day an official holiday finally paid off in 1914 when Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially making mother's day the second sunday in May. 7th grader Lily Renneker said, “I do celebrate mothers and fathers day. This angered Anna and she began to denounce the holiday because she thought that companies had turned Mother's Day into a way to make profit, not as a way to honor Mothers, so she organized boycotts to stop it. death in 1948 she had completely disowned the holiday and even actively lobbied the government hoping to get Mother's Day officially removed from the calendar, but she did not succeed and Mother’s Day continues to be celebrated and commercialized to this day.

Father’s Day The campaign to honor Father’s Day did not have the same appeal as Mother’s Day. Sonora Smart Dodd did not think it was fair that there was Mother's Day, but no Fathers Day. She went around to her local churches, shopkeepers, and government officials to gain support, and eventually she succeeded. When asked what father day meant to him, Tim Kwartler, a 7th grader said “(Father’s day is) when father’s are acknowledged for everything that they do and give up for their child.”

the 1920s to 1930s a campaign started to get rid of Mother’s and Father's Day and make a new holiday called Parent’s Day. The idea was to unite parents but this effort ended during the Great Depression.

Finally in 1972 Richard Nixon legally made Father's Day a national holiday, and this time there was no discussion of diminished manliness.

Both Mother’s and Father’s day have grown exponentially and are widely celebrated in America and In other countries.

It is very great to show support to your mothers and fathers because they support you too, in more ways than one might realize.

Day’s upcoming Art Show at 5:30, June 6th, will display the best creative works of students taught by Day’s talented art teachers, Sherry Edwards and Bonne Whitaker. The display on the left is actually last year’s show, which happened after the Daytime’s last edition, but gives an idea of the type of art show visitors will be able to enjoy. One wonderful example of current student art (above right) is a striking work created by student artist, Anna Huntington.

Discover the Joy of Painting with Bob Ross

By Gavin Cox Vietnam War veteran and painter Bob Ross, who died in 1995, was skilled at helping people paint. He created a popular set of videos wherein he instructs people with their painting techniques. These videos are no longer on TV, but anyone interested in looking at them can find them on YouTube. While some considered Bob to be less than a professional artist, yet looking into his methods, many will see that Bob Ross’s teaching techniques for painting are great.

his famous program, "The Joy of Painting." Each episode could be filmed about as quickly as he could paint, and he did the entire thing for free. This is about when he started making these painting videos. In these videos, he shows you how to paint beautiful landscapes”.

Many times in the videos he starts off with the same thing of going back and forth with the paint brush. The reason why these videos can help future painters is because even as an inexperienced painter, it’s possible to paint all of these beautiful landscapes. In addition to that, he talks to you as if you're sitting in chair discussing your childhood troubles.

Joel Johansson, a Twitch streamer, uses a program named Mario Paint, which is an old art program from the early 90’s. Joel was using the program and had decided that he would use Bob Ross’s videos in order to help him make landscapes in the program.

New Beauty and the Beast Roars Into Theatres

By Renee Rogers and Adilya Sunyaev On March 17, 2017, Disney released the new live action film Beauty and the Beast. Fans young and old bought tickets as quickly as possible, and waited excitedly for the premiere.

Although it is hard to believe that the new version could impress

viewers as much as the original did, the live action version has multiple new songs, gives background information about both Belle and Beast’s parents, and much more.

Although the original is a Disney classic that can never be replaced, it left some viewers wondering what happened to Belle and Beast’s parents.

Belle’s father, Maurice, was an inventor in the original film.

However, in the 2017 release, he is an artist. Although he ‘left’ his inventor legacy behind, Belle ‘inherited’ his skills. Also, at that time, it was extremely rare and frowned upon to have a woman who can read and write, and Belle pushes past all the hate strongly, and even teaches a child to read.

In the new movie, Belle and Beast have something to bond with- the loss of their mothers to the same cause. They also bond over their love of reading, and read many books together. Many may be excited to hear that the 6th grade has been producing their own show, directed

by Indigo English teacher, Jamie Demarest. Students auditioned in December, and have been rehearsing since January, almost daily. These young actors and singers don’t have as much free time with rehearsals and preparation, but they are happier with theatre as they would be doing other activities. This year, they are putting on a doubleheader of Washington Irving stories- Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. These shows are packed with comedy, alluring singing, impeccable acting, and a dash of romance.

The 6th grade musical is a doubleheader of stories written by the late author Washington Irving. Mr. Demarest rewrote the famed stories, Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, into musical adaptations. Rip Van Winkle is about a lazy middle aged man who finds himself asleep for twenty years. Rowdy children, laziness, domestic chaos, and heated disputes are imminent discussion-provoking topics in Rip Van Winkle. In The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, a man named Ichabod Crane realizes that he is falling in love with rich Katrina Van Tassel, who hap-

This movie also includes multiple new songs such as Days in the Sun, Evermore, How Does a Moment Last Forever, and a few more. Apart from the new songs, Gaston, from the original, was changed. The 2017 movie adds a part about Gaston’s hunting abilities. According to bustle. com, “composer Alan Menken explained that these were original lyrics, written by the late Howard Ashman, that were cut from the animated film. The image, he said, was ‘a little hard for an animated film, but I thought it was great for this.’”

One of the many fascinating things about the movie from the clothes, scenes, songs, and even dialogue, is the new release is almost the exact copy of the first, and the few changes there were, are amazing additions to the story line. Emma Watson made a powerful and adventurous Belle, making her an even stronger character. In the new film, right after Belle replaces her father, she takes the clothes from

her enchanted dresser and ties them together, creating a rope to help her escape from the Beast’s castle. In the first movie, Belle doesn’t try to run away right after she takes her father’s place, and she just pouts in her room and refuses to eat dinner with the Beast.

Many fans were delighted to hear Emma Watson’s beautiful singing voice during the movie, but the auto tune didn’t go without notice. According to quora. com, Anonymous said, “Sadly it was very much autotuned. I heard it almost immediately in the trailer and it pains me that her voice sounds so processed.”

Viewers can hear the autotune five seconds into the first song, and it is obvious that there is something there that wasn’t there before.

Local eatery serves COMFORT FOOD in relaxed setting

By Jasper Wiborg When one walks into Grassfields, they immediately get the calm vibe provided from the dim lighting and the aroma of the toasty, fresh bread. When we walked up to the counter, despite how crowded it was, our party was were immediately seated. The menu had a variety of foods from pasta to burgers, and it was clear that there were dishes for varied tastes. Customers can even get combos by choosing two dishes they like, and will end up with a good sized portion of both of them. The waitress came quickly, and we ordered with no problems.

When diners are waiting for the food, they are served a loaf of Grassfields’ famous bread. The crust was nice and crunchy,

but not too filling. Soon after we finished, our appetizers came.

The majority of the table ordered Caesar salads, although one person ordered a garden salad. The Caesar salad had crisp lettuce and fresh, grated cheese, but had too much dressing. Yet the garden salad had an enjoyable creamy Italian dressing.

When the main course came, you could tell it was fresh from the oven. I ordered chicken piccata, while one person ordered the chicken fingers, and everyone else got a combo. My chicken piccata was nicely cooked, and the pasta was tasty, yet mushy, which was probably because of the overload of lemon sauce. One person’s combo was baked stuffed shrimp and chicken teriyaki, with a side of rice. This diner had this to say: “The chicken was tender, and

cooked to perfection, Another member got a strawberry while the rice had a shortcake, which, sadly, was not good mix of spinach and as good as expected. Local places with the BEST frozen treats to beat the heat

By Fin Belson and Andre Meza Newton seems to have a variety of ice cream places around every corner. We went on a mission to try and find the best place to enjoy a delicious cone of dairy. Among those is the family run restaurant Cabot's; mostly known for its highly varying selection of ice cream. The atmosphere has a slightly rustic feel, with a few benches and a table-top bar. Any visitors should be coming with extra time, especially in the evening when families fill in to enjoy a quick bite and an ice cream cone.

Eighth grader Alexa Kwon had this to say: “The food is great, and it’s nice to be able to have food and great ice cream in one place.” The amount of toppings and flavors are extensive. Bringing a new twist on frappes; Cabot’s also has dairyfree, and frozen yogurt options, meaning it can be a bit pricy, but it’s definitely worth the money. The sizes can be larger than expected, but provide great texture and flavor. The ice cream

is rich and smooth giving the extra feel of an old ice cream parlor.

Rancatore’s placed in Newtonville is not roomy but provides flavorful ice cream.

Providing rotating flavors that differ from the normal vanilla and chocolate, Ranc’s also makes their own ice cream. Some of it stays and some get delivered to stores nearby. The red awning leads to a counter and few seats that line the wall. Once visitors approach the counter, they can see a variety of differing choices that look fresh. Some flavors vary from Mexican Chocolate Chip to Gingersnap to Hydrox. Visitors should expect Ranc’s to be busy and to bring their whole allowance. People are usually forced to order “to go”, and to pay a total of four dollars for a “micro cup”.

Coney Island Ice Cream situated in West Newton near the Cinema is a great place to enjoy

Visitors can expect a soothing atmosphere and to be immediately answered by an employee. There is enjoyable music and fast service, most go as a follow-up after a movie next door.

Eighth grader Colin Lund-Tack said, “The owner is really awesome and the ice cream is really good. I enjoy the ‘Cookie Monster’ flavor. It is blue cookie dough, but the blue makes it taste that much better.” The prices were fair, about three dollars for a sundae and five dollars for a large serving. Overall, Coney Is-

Off of Watertown Street, popular among middle schoolers at F.A. Day is Yogurt Beach. The feel is very welcoming, TVs line the wall showing surfers, music playing and benches with tables shaped like surfboards. A clash of colors make it seem like visitors are no longer in Newton. Seventh grader Rebecca Chou said: “Yogurt Beach is great for a place to visit, [for] either a cold treat or just a small bag of candy. But expect it to be crowded, especially on hot days because it’s a relatively small place and there’s limited seating.” It provides the freedom of choice visitors have for their frozen yogurt. Constantly changing self serve flavors can vary from watermelon sorbet to old fashioned chocolate yogurt. Every day of the week, families and kids show up to enjoy refreshing frozen yogurt. With a wide selection of yogurt toppings and specialties like sprinkles, fudge, and caramel. Visitors can ask at the counter for a frappe, can of soda, or a root beer float. Yogurt Beach has great feel and acceptable prices.

Eighth Graders are STRESSING OUT about High School

As the year starts to draw to a close, students find themselves waiting for summer to start.

Sleeping in and going to the beach doesn’t sound quite so bad at all. However, for many eighth graders, while they are looking forward to creating many memories to hold on to, they also know that summer ending means one thing: high school.

High school can mean new beginnings, endless new friendships and relationships, and a ton of independance. It can also mean stress from difficult exams, prodigious amounts of finals, a tedious workload, and social problems. When asked about what they felt they would stress about most in high school, one student who requested anonymity said, “Being with so many older people (and some have beards).

These are only some of the factors that students will be confronted with in high school.

Having a small amount of stress can help motivate students to accomplish their goals, but too much stress can lead to severe problems. Stress is a huge factor in a student’s academic and social life. If one is too stressed out, they can develop anxiety or depression, which is why it’s important to relieve and cope with as much stress as is possible. When asked about how she will cope with her stress in high school, Cara Dunleavy of the Evergreen team said, “I’ll make sure I’m organized, and fill out my planner with everything I have to do. I’ll prioritize work and take a bubble bath if I’m really stressed”.

It may seem obvious, but a great way to cut down on stress is to prioritize work and to not procrastinate. Additionally, many students nowadays don’t update their planner but even though it may be tedious, to stay on track it’s essential that it stays filled in.

If a student needs help, they should always keep in touch with a teacher to help manage their workload and make sure they understand the curriculum being taught. As to social struggles, a great way to stay out of trouble is to surround one’s self with positive people who will encourage them and help them make good decisions.

Let’s face it, high school is a lot to handle, but it’s not all downs. It definitely also has it’s perks and as long as students stay positive, try their best and stay out of trouble, success shouldn’t be far out of reach. When Ian Dickerman of Evergreen was asked about what he thought of high school he said, “I’m more looking forward to high school than afraid of

While there have been numerous efforts to raise awareness about this topic, the choices of the current presidential administration promote behaviors such as these.

YouTube’s Homophobic Algorithm And How They Fixed It

However, many parents are concerned for their children, and desire offensive or inappropriate content to be censored. That is why YouTube’s restricted mode was created. YouTube’s restricted mode filters out inappropriate content, however, the mode also filters out appropriate LGBT+ content. Alex Katz, a seventh grader at day, said, “I just think it’s stupid.”

Many YouTube creators, such as video blogger Joey Graceffa and pop duo Tegan and Sara, noticed that many of their videos featuring LGBT+ content were blocked when users turned on restricted mode. Openly gay youtuber, James Hill, known online as “jim

This means that if enough people thought something appropriate was inappropriate, it would eventually get blocked on restricted mode. According to the BBC, this even led to a lesbian couple’s wedding vows getting blocked.

Randy Meyer, day librarian, had this to say, “I think the problem is that the word “appropriate” is pretty vague and subjective.”

However, YouTube has addressed this problem. On the twentieth of march, YouTube tweeted that they were “On it”.

On April twenty-first, Johanna Wright, the vice president of product management at YouTube said that the YouTube’s engineers had retooled the algorithm. Since this modification, twelve million more videos are available in restricted mode, and are being used to train the algorithms. While YouTube has not said this patch will fully fix the problem, YouTube representatives claim that this will help, and that they are working to eliminate the unnecessary censorship.

It is the beginning of summer, school just got out and the sun is shining and kids cannot wait to start checking off that Summer Fun list. One problem, that list just doesn’t seem that fun anymore. This is when summer boredom hits. Some kids have their own ways to defeat summer boredom.

Vanessa MacLeod, a sixth grader, had this to say, “When I am bored over the summer I FaceTime and text my friends until they get bored.” Eva Fink, a sixth grader, had this to say, “I spend time with my friends.” Some fun things kids can do this summer include the following: Make an inspiration board Use it to put up favorite quotes, pictures, and moments on a bulletin board, and hang it up.

Redecorate. It’s always fun to try a new style on a day when it’s too hot to be outside, rearrange/ redecorate your room. According to hercampus.com, a cheap but summery DIY is flower lights, “These adorable lights are perfect for spicing up a string of Christmas tree lights. All you need are a few colored cupcake liners and some scissors. Cut the cupcake liners into flower and leaf shapes with a hole in the middle of each, and then tape or glue them to the back of the light.”

Start a journal.

Take a moment to reflect, write a paragraph or two about the day before going to bed. Reflecting on daily happenings is a great way to de-stress.

Summer is all about being outside, so get out there and have fun! Play games with friends at sundown, everyone knows that sunset is the nicest time of day in the summer, so grab a few friends and decide who is ‘it’.

Play fun water balloon games like Water Balloon Hot Potato, or a game of Blindfold Toss.

balloons at each other. The person who gets hit last wins!

Run through the sprinklers.

When walking back from a bite of froyo, challenge friends to see how many sprinklers they can jump through.

Nothing beats running through a gentle sprinkle of water.

Creativity can blossom in summer.

Make a film.

Instead of talking about someone else's film why not make one instead.

Grab a camera and make spooky trailers or fun films. Grab a cousin, some funky dress up clothes and turn on that camera.

Summer can get way too hot to go outside. Watch prank videos on YouTube, or have a Netflix and chill day. Binge watch a long series to take up some time in a fun way.

Learn to bake/cook. We’ve all watched our parents cook up scrumptious meals, so one day when there is nothing to do, take out a cookbook and try baking a cake. According to bbcgoodfood. com, “Some ideas for baking are caramel sauce, summer celebration cake, or a batch of twix cookies.”

Summer is the season of reading, so grab a book and get lost in the magical land of

stories. According to goodreads. com, “Some good middle school books are Smile, Drama, Sisters, and The Giver.” Asha Bohnert, sixth grader, had this to say about beating summer boredom, “I walk my dogs or read books, but I’m still bored a lot.”

It always feels nice to help others. Become a volunteer, nothing feels better than to help others in need, check in with some local charities about when is the best time to help.

Run a lemonade stand. set it up with friends and sell some ice cold lemonade. Maybe make some brownies or cupcakes too.

Have a yard sale. Go through old clothes/toys and have an adult help price them. Arrange them on a nice folding table and wait for the money to start rolling in.

There are so many more things that can be done to defeat summer boredom. Do not let the summer blues ruin all the fun!

Summer is the season of freedom and fun, so grab some friends or siblings and hit the beach, make a film, or bake some brownies. The most important part of summer is just to have fun!

Campers experience crazy summer fun at CAMP CHICKAMI

“Relevio!” shouts a boy covered in mud, running through the sand pit. His once captured teammates jump and cheer, but they cannot stand around for long. They all sprint out, off to find hiding spots. Meanwhile, a group of little girls are laughing and weaving friendship bracelets for one another, some drawing tattoos on their counselors. Suddenly, a loud voice booms over camp, “Assembly!”

All the campers drop what they are doing and run to join their groups on the field for peppy cheers and funny skits. “B-O-XW-O-O-D-S,” one group chants.

“C-E-D-A-R I’m a Cedar I’m a star!” shouts another. “Pines are people too!” the littlest campers pipe in. Pretty soon, the camp is erupting in cheers and excitement.

The scene above would be a typical day at Camp Chickami. According to wsymca.org, “Camp Chickami is an energetic and enthusiastic non-profit summer day camp in Wayland run by the West Suburban YMCA.” Not only do many students from FA Day go to Chickami, but a few of our very own teachers are counselors at Chickami in the Summer. Swimmers, take your mark.

Go! There is an astounding thunder of splashes as the swimmers entered the water and shot off across the pool.

After a number of seconds, there were a few people that stood out with significant leads. Ryo Vanderpool was one of them.

The Daytime got a chance to interview Ryo and ask him about his career as a swimmer.

How did you become interested in swimming?

Well, I first became interested in it when I was in preschool.

What sparked my interest was swimming in my grandmother’s pool.

Relevio is a tag-like game where one group of campers seeks while the other group members hide within boundaries. Nicole Semenoff, a seventh grader on the Ruby team had this to say: “My favorite part of Chickami is Relevio, but I don’t like courts because people get too competitive. I’ve been going to Chickami since second

grade. I was a Willow (one of the groups).” Every group name at Chickami has one thing in common: it is a type of tree.

Camp Chickami puts a big emphasis on the importance of nature with their mascot Froggy, and lets campers experience all the wonders of nature firsthand with streams, woods, and even a big swampy area full of frogs and mud called Mud City.

Francesca Tapper on the Fire team had this to say: “My least favorite thing at Camp Chickami was Mud City because I don’t like getting dirty and I am an indoorsy person. I was only at Chickami for a year.” While some campers like Francesca feel that Mud City is just too dirty for them, others think the opposite. A soon-to-be Chickami camper, Olivia Helfrich-Tapia on the Ruby team had this to say: “I’m going to Chickami in the summer of 2017 because a lot of my friends go and it sounds really fun. I’m looking forward to Mud City. That sounds cool.”

Camp Chickami is pretty wacky, but that is part of what makes the camp so fun and unique. Anyone from age six to fourteen who loves the outdoors and playing energetic games with enthusiastic counselors and campers may want to consider going to Camp Chickami for an exciting and pleasurable summer.

What is your favorite swim stroke?

Backstroke, because it has always been my best stroke since I was 8.

Who are some swimmers that you look up to? Who are your favorite swimmers?

Yes. I admire, Michael Phelps has always been a the best swimmer to look up to and I like watch his videos and examine his techniques.

What are some challenges you face while swimming?

One of the biggest challenges I face is getting injured by playing soccer and having to be sidelined in swimming because of it.

Ryo Vanderpool has had immense success as a swimmer.

Since a young age, Ryo’s swimming expertise has lead him to victory. Vanderpool has always believed that hard-work will lead to success and strives to learn and improve.

ment as a swimmer?

Probably when I took third or fourth place in all of New England for age 8. That moment really motivated me.

What is your goal for swimming in the future?

My goal for the future is to make it to nationals and maybe even the olympics.

How often do you swim?

Right now I swim 5 days a week and I’ll soon be swimming 6 days a week.

By Editor Isaac Tang A crisp spring breeze blows in the air as the Knights of Day prepare to take the field. After the long, biting cold winter, their season finally begins. These players have played pick-up frisbee and practiced many hours, all while waiting for this moment. Coming off an excellent season, Day’s newest sports team is determined to perform. The mastermind behind all this stands on the sideline and looks expectantly upon his team.

The Knights of Day are geared up for another successful season. The team was founded last year by Will Demarest, the head coach, and two students, Anna Schafer and Alex Kolodney.

The team has grown significantly in size since then. Although many players from last year departed for Newton North, the team retains their head coach.

first introduced to frisbee at a young age by his father, Jamie Demarest, who also a teacher at F.A. Day. Coach Demarest has previously played Ultimate in middle school, high school and college. His experience in the sport will help the team learn and improve throughout the season. When asked how he would inspire the team when they are tired, he said, “I don’t know if they know how to be tired, they love the sport; they go out there and work their butts off.” Before their matches, the Knights of Day try to get as pumped up as possible for the game. When asked about how the players get to this level, Coach Demarest said, “Music, they play all sorts of music, last year it was oldies, this year they are doing a lot of rap and electronic with some oldies mixed in.

By Jonah Sullivan There are a lot of sports out there but Ultimate Frisbee is one of the more exotic. Day is lucky enough to have a frisbee team and Evan Hoch, an 8th grader on the IV team, is the captain of our A team. I was lucky to be able to sit down with him and ask him a couple of questions.

How long have you been playing frisbee?

“I started in the fall of 7th grade.”

Why did you choose to play

many great and important responsibilities. Coach Demarest said, “I take it on myself to make sure that everybody is in a good place emotionally and that they’re enjoying their time and that they care about the sport because Ultimate should be a great experience for everyone who participates.”

The Knights of Day face many challenges coming into this new season. They are separated into two teams, the “A” team and the

“It started off as a laid back club. And then I really enjoyed it so I decided to keep playing.”

What do you do before a game to inspire you?

“We stretch as a team and do some drills.”

What’s your greatest frisbee memory?

“The Rhode Island tournament was very fun. We played against high school teams and beat four of them. And I got to play in the all star game.”

When you are losing a game how do you keep on going?

“B” team. The A team mostly play against the B teams of high schools, while the B team plays against other middle school B teams. The games against high school teams will be especially hard fought and intense. The A team plays three tournaments consisting of five matches each, while the B team plays two tournaments. Each match is 90 minutes long and an average Ultimate player runs around five miles per match.

The new season brings both opportunities and tests and the Knights of Day must be ready to live up to them. They are under great leadership and are well prepared for what lies ahead.

Although Coach Demarest is an excellent and seasoned coach, the players are the authors of their own story and their performance will shape their prospects.

“You have fun even if you are not winning.”

Are you going to keep on playing frisbee in high school?

“Yes I hope to make the A team next year.”

What’s your most cringe worthy memory?

“Last year at a tournament I tried to catch it [the frisbee] with one hand but then dropped it.”

What responsibilities do you have as a team captain?

“I help organize people, lead warm ups and stretching and do things for Mr. Demarest.”

In a time of peril, new understanding brings hope.

The soft fur sweater brushed against my sunburned back. It felt good to put on a new outfit after days of wearing the same tattered one. It had taken multiple showers to get off all the grime that had been a result of trekking in a ruined America for days.

I still remember the day when we had finally been saved. It wasn’t long ago, but I had been trying to forget the past week.

Then Josseline Denise had come and brought Maria and I to Canada.

“Oh. Hey Brad. Have you heard the rumors?” Maria said quickly.

“No…” I said, uncertainty filling my voice. The other people at the table were looking at me as if they thought I had been living under a rock. Which, not long ago, I actually had.

Another teenager at the table with brown hair and freckles looked at me. “Well, apparently we just got news about who started the fire from… an officer who worked at Area 51.” She seemed hesitant, scared.

“You mean like, aliens?” I asked uncertainly.

“Exactly. One time, when I was out there,

I saw this woman walk up to this area, and then she convulsed and just fell over,” she explained, eyes wide. “I was far away, but I’m convinced it was some weird alien radioactive thing.” I shivered. The concept that aliens started this was incredibly unsettling. I was about to voice my concerns, but the there was a voice that boomed over the cafeteria chatter.

Josseline Denise was up at the front of the dining room. ”As many of you have already heard, we have information about who started the fire,” she said, gasped breaking out through the crowd.

“Here’s what happened: There was testing on many different animals in the iconic military base, Area 51. One of the tests resulted in an unrecognizable being of terror and mass destruction. We are unable to figure out what it was in the beginning. It escaped, using its genetically engineered powers to set fire to the country that had hurt it. It was a quest for revenge, for justice.”

This was not what anyone expected. Silence replaced the loud chatter of just minutes before.Josseline Denise continued.

“They’re still out there, and we will immediately work on catching them, and then rebuild America.

We ask that you build new lives, even though we know that that might be a hard task. Thank you.”
