Niagara Falls is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and if you visit, there are several “must see” stops including the cataract itself. Goat Island: After visiting Cave of the Winds, take a walk around Goat Island and explore all three waterfalls, American, Bridal Veil and Canadian. Three Sisters: After finishing near the brink, understand there is another, totally natural, musical place to explore, Three Sister Islands. As you leave the parking lot, follow the road counter clockwise along the shore facing Canada until you see the signs for Three Sisters Island. There are a half dozen parking spots along the road posted with a 20-minute limit. Park there.

Tourists take in the falls from Prospect Point. Walk out across the bridges to the Islands. If you bring binoculars, this is a great place to see gulls, especially in winter when 19 different species call the Falls home. There

are usually tufted titmice and chickadees around that will eat from your hand if you bring seed.

Bicycling: New York State Parks in recent years replaced the Robert Moses Parkway with a reimagined Whirlpool Street and a series of bike paths dotted with wildflower meadows and native trees. Bikes are available for rent at SeeSight Rentals with a kiosk on Old Falls Street and a storefront at Third and Ferry. The shop has both scooters and bicycles. There are also Reddy Bikeshare bikes available to rent throughout Niagara Falls. A two-day Reddy Bike pass costs $3 and 10 cents per minute to ride. Signs on the bike rack explain the process.

Hiking: Want a spectacular walk? Not afraid of stairs? Drive north from downtown along Whirlpool Street to Devil’s Hole State Park. Park for free. Walk North along the river to the stairs which will take you down 285 steps to a trail. Go left and follow for about two miles. You will arrive at the Whirlpool Rapids, among the largest, most spectacular rapids in the world. There are also stairs at Whirlpool State Park but they are closed for reconstruction until late June or early July.

Raising the history of Niagara Falls’ Oakwood Cemetery offers a glimpse into the past

BY RICK PFEIFFER RICK.PFEIFFER @NIAGARA-GAZETTE.COM

Interested in learning about several of the famous daredevils that tried to brave Niagara Falls? Oakwood Cemetery and its ever-popular Daredevils of the Falls Tour is the place to visit. “That’s the tour that we pitch to tourists,” Oakwood’s Director of Operations Tim Baxter said. “We have some of the biggest daredevils buried here, like Annie Edson Taylor.” But like almost every destination in the Falls, Oakwood Cemetery was hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. “We were just starting to gain momentum (as a tourism option) before the pandemic,” Baxter said. “We’re hoping to get back in the game this summer and begin offering our tours again.” And Baxter said the cemetery is looking to broaden the types of tours it offers this tourist season. The more tourists have a choice, the more likely they are to check 12

Oakwood out. “We’ve talked about expanding our programs,” he said. “A lot of people don’t know who’s (buried) here. We tell them, ‘Niagara’s history is at Oakwood.’ “ Tours can be booked at regularly scheduled times or even on-demand. Every other Sunday, at 11 a.m., Oakwood conducts a regular walking tour of the cemetery grounds. The one-hour walk lets visitors hear behind-the-scenes stories of some of Niagara’s most famous daredevils and other prominent residents while visiting their final resting places. New this summer will be what Baxter called the “What’s In A (Street) Name” tour. “A lot of people don’t know that the streets in the city are named for real people,” Baxter said. Folks will hear about Charles Hyde (Hyde Park Boulevard), John B. Bollier (Bollier Avenue), Alfred Chapin (Chapin Avenue) Asher T, Cudaback (Cudaback

If you’re wondering how local schools like (Charles B) Gaskill and (James) Trott got their names, there’s a tour for that as well. Also new in 2022 will be a tour that focuses on some of Oakwood’s inhabitants who arrived under very unusual circumstances. For example, the Pavloff family, a mother and six

children who all died at the same time when they were hit by a train. “We’ll explore some of the odd history with that,” Baxter said. “Along with our ‘Last Call Happy Hour Tour’ which will partner with Wine on Third for.” If you’re interested in booking a tour, all you need to do is go to Oakwood’s web site and

Flight of Five locks

EXPLORE! SUMMER 2022

Tourist Dale Spaulding of Leavenworth, Kansas, checks out an old turbine during a visit to the Locks District Museum along the Erie Canal in Lockport.

Erie Canal engineering marvel brought back to life for Lockport visitors BY BENJAMIN JOE BEN.JOE@LOCKPORTJOURNAL.COM

A drivable distance from Niagara Falls – home of one of the natural wonders of the world — Lockport is home to a monument featuring the measure that humankind aspired to in spite of nature’s obstacles and challenges. The Flight of Five Locks in downtown Lockport could make an engineer weep for its culmination of technology and grit in the face of Niagara Escarpment’s only favor to those designing the construction of the Erie Canal from Albany to Buffalo. Hovering south of Lake Ontario, the waterway was dug with the help of immigrants signing up for the project as soon as they arrived to the New World. The dream of a connection for goods from the port of New York City to the wild frontier of Western New York

could not have been realized without Lockport and its mighty stairway of Locks, as well as the people who settled there. Stories, artifacts and a virtual demonstration are waiting for visitors to enjoy in the Erie Canal Discovery Center – a quick 50-feet from where the Discovery Shuttle drops off locals and tourists alike around Lockport and from Niagara Falls. Interested parties might listen to staff like Ray Wigle describe the construction of locks along the entire canal. Upstairs there’s a movie theater and tour to learn more about the technological marvel that is waiting for them. In 2014, the Lockport Locks Heritage District Corp. renovated Locks 69 and 70 and put them into working order for the first time in 100 years. In 2019, a Durham boat, a large, flat-bottomed freight vessel, was constructed. That same year, Lock 68 was also rehabilitated.

Every week in the summer months, the boat is put through each of these three locks for tourists to watch a bona-fide re-enactment of what it must’ve been like in the 19th century to ride through the staircase of locks. In 2020, sculptor Susan Geissler finished three of the 12 statues of Lock Tenders and one little girl that were captured on film by photographer F.B. Clench in 1897. Today, seven of those Lock Tenders have been installed, as well as a statue of Clench, aiming his camera upon the scene before him. “These guys are our pride and joy because they tell the human story of what it was like to work on the Erie Canal. We look forward to hopefully finishing out,” President of the Lockport Locks Heritage District Corporation Dave Kinyon said, noting that more visitors will help continue the work done to bringing this story to a conclusion. On nearby Church Street, the Erie Canal Discovery Center offers the unparalleled experience of what it was like to be a 19th Century ‘canaller’. Interactive displays let visitors try their hand at moving a boat through locks. Also to satisfy the curiosity of residents and visitors alike, the Lockport’s Locks District Museum – a small building located between the Erie Canal Flight of Five Locks and the Erie

The museum is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the canal season. “In heritage tourism, it’s very important to have a sense of place,” Kinyon said, noting that the area around Canal Street has been designated for Locks enthusiasts, complete with informational panels and flagpole banners. At the moment, visitors to the Erie Canal Flight of Five Locks can enjoy self-guided tours of Riley’s Way, named after Bill Riley, Lockport City Historian from

1922-1990. In July there will be docent-led tours at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday. A 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday farmers market will begin June 4 to Oct. 22,and a 2-6 p.m. Wednesday farmers market will open July 6 through September 28. While tours are available May 16, starting June 11 to Sept. 5, Lockport Locks & Erie Canal Cruises will be offering summer boarding passes for those who want to experience the water level rising in the Erie Barge Canal Locks made in the 1800s. So why visit Lockport? Kinyon sums up the pitch. “Nobody else does as good of a job as we do here in orienting the visitor, explaining the entire canal system.” 17

The Erie Canal Discovery Center, the museum and orientation center adjacent to the historic Lockport locks, is open seven days a week through Oct. 31. Visitors to the Erie Canal Discovery Center learn why the Erie Canal was built and what the massive engineering project at Lockport accomplished. They can get directions and ask questions, pick up information, explore interactive museum exhibits, and experience a simulated boat ride through a 19th century lock. They can also find information about things to see and do elsewhere in Lockport and Niagara County. “The Erie Canal at Lockport attracts visitors from all over the world, but we also see a great many guests from right here in Western New York, they usually come when the weather is nicest,” said Melissa Dunlap, executive Director of the Niagara County Historical Society which operates the museum. When they leave the Discovery Center, visitors are shown how to go down into the locks area and find the points of interest. In addition to the museum, the Discovery Center features the Lockport Visitor Center, a museum shop with canal-themed items, and public restrooms. Entrance to the building and use of the services is free; admission to the museum – including the movie and simulated boat trip, interactive exhibits, and display of local artifacts is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, veterans and AAA/CAA members, and free for children under 18. The Erie Canal Discovery Center is operated as a public education service by the Niagara County Historical Society, a not-for-profit organization.

Niagara Wine Trail

There’s something for beginning wine tasters to experienced sommeliers BY JACOB FRIES JACOB.FRIES@LOCKPORTJOURNAL.COM

Wine runs through Niagara like water runs through the nearby waterfall. This can be experienced through the various vineyards and wineries of the Niagara Wine Trail. This collection of 14 member wineries, as well as a number of non-member wineries across Niagara, Orleans, and Monroe counties in Western New York, offer intimate, authentic, and charming experiences that can appeal to both locals, and visitors to the region. Numerous varieties of wine are offered across the Wine Trail, and some locations even make beer, cider or mead. Both old-world and native grapes are used to make the different offerings. The wines that are made can also cater to different palates, from beginning wine tasters to experienced sommeliers. “You get a little bit of what each winery has to offer,” said Niagara Wine Trail Executive Director Susan Swiatkowski during an interview. “And in doing that, you start to recognize the wines that you like, and become repeat customers to our different wineries.” In recent years, some white wines like gewurtztraminer and pinot grigio have begun to win critical acclaim as well as reds including pinot noir. The Wine Trail itself offers several events throughout the year. Upcoming ones include the Wine and Charcuterie weekend tasting experience which will happen from June 4-5. This event involves a weekend pass at any of the wineries along the wine trail to sample three wines per winery, along with samples of cheese,

meat, dip, and other foods. Tickets cost $40, and while supplies last, participants will also get a complimentary wooden charcuterie display board with the branded logo of the Niagara Wine Trail. Another event happening over the next few months is the Niagara USA Uncorked wine festival, which will be happening on July 23-24 at Academy Park in the village of Lewiston. Each visitor who purchases a ticket will be able to taste three varieties of wine from the participating wineries, as well as a keepsake wine glass. Local food vendors will also be on site during the event, though food purchases will not be a part of the ticket package. Tickets have not yet been put up for sale, but will be available for purchase from the Niagara Wine Trail website when available. Even without a special event, most wineries offer inexpensive or sometimes free tastings. The vintner, and owner, are often one and the same and can often be found behind the tasting bar. It’s worth noting that this year, the wine trail will be celebrating its 20th anniversary, though the planning of the celebration is still ongoing. Other events happen throughout the year, particularly on holidays. In particular, a wine and chocolate Valentines Day event was held in February of this year on the Wine Trail.

and more trains Medina Railroad Museum boasts one of the largest model-train layouts in the country BY ALLISON DEUTSCHMAN CONTRIBUTOR

There’s always something new to see at the Medina Railroad Museum, 530 West Ave., even though the displays don’t change too often. That may be due to the fact that there’s so much to see and study, even frequent visitors discover something new each time they walk through.

EXPLORE! SUMMER 2022

The museum showcases a very impressive 204-foot-long, 14-foot wide HO scale model train layout at its center, with local and regional attractions depicted including the Erie Canal, the Letchworth gorge and a baseball field in Medina. Construction is perpetual. Dawn Winkler, director of operations, has worked on the layout herself over the years. “All the detail and hard work that goes into it is worth it when you see the looks on people’s faces when they see it for the first time,” she said. As an anniversary gift to her husband, Ginny Kropf, museum board member and secretary, bought a scale of the aircraft that they once owned and the piece is featured in the layout, along with a fictitious airport named after them, “A.J. Kropf International Airport.” The museum occupies the old New York Central Railroad freight depot and Kropf has been involved with it since the early 1990s. “Founder Marty Phelps was a friend, and I toured the building with him after he bought it, when it was full of debris and just an old freight house. I thought he had lost his mind. But just look at what he did!” Kropf said. There is so much attention to detail in the museum that Kropf and fellow board member Joe Kujawa readily admit, each time they visit, they discover something new that they had not noticed before. Seemingly everything that’s related to trains can be found, down to samples of the china that was once used in dining cars and the luggage that riders carried. Also displayed is the uniform that Phelps wore when he served as the conductor on museumarranged train “excursions” to Lockport and back. When you visit the museum, take a break from trains and check out the displays of model aircrafts and ships from World War I. There’s a robust collection of military gear and firefighting equipment — again in honor of the late Phelps, a retired professional firefighter — and as a nod to local history, a giant Heinz pickle sign also is on display. H.J. Heinz Company once had a processing plant in Medina, practically a stone’s throw from the freight depot. Themed train rides are among the most popular events at Medina Railroad Museum. There’s a fall foliage ride, the “Polar Express” ride before Christmas and the late-spring biggie “Day Out With Thomas,” a weekend-long celebration of Thomas the Train’s birthday with lots of children’s activities alongside a train ride and access to the museum. This year’s celebration is slated for June 10-June 12. For ticket prices and more information, call 866-468-7630 or go to www.TicketWeb.com. For more information about the museum go to https://www.medinarailroadmuseum.org/. 32

Casting off in the Niagara Region Anglers enjoy fishing off the Wilson Pier on Lake Ontario.

Area offers four distinctive areas noted for freshwater fishing

Fishing along the Niagara River and Lake Ontario has really caught on in recent years. “When it comes to freshwater sportfishing, there is no other place in the country with the same size, diversity, and number of fish as the Niagara region,” says Frank Campbell, outdoor promotions director for Destination Niagara USA. Anglers target species including smallmouth bass, walleye, trout, and salmon using a variety of fishing methods.

Open: Memorial Day Weekend: - Saturday, Sunday, Monday 12 - 6 p.m. June - Saturday and Sunday 12 - 6 p.m. July through Labor Day - Friday, Saturday, Sunday 12 - 6 p.m.

(Sponsored by WNY Dairy Farmers)

• Falls Region: The area above Niagara Falls has shallower water that’s home to warmwater fish like bass and muskellunge. • River Region: The Niagara River, carrying the water from the upper four Great Lakes, is the lifeblood for a host of fish species that call Niagara their home, including salmon, trout, bass, muskie, walleye and more. Fishing activities below Niagara Falls exist 365 days a year, with some of the best trout fishing in the world taking place during the late fall, winter and early spring. • Lake Region: Lake Ontario offers up one of the finest trout and salmon fisheries on the Great Lakes. Winning Lake Ontario Counties Derby fish routinely come from the famous Niagara Bar, and in 2014, all three grand prize catches came from Niagara Falls USA — the first time that’s ever been accomplished!

Every species of fish that swims in the Great Lakes can be found in the waters around Niagara County. The Niagara River joins two Great Lakes: Ontario and Erie. The nearby Erie Canal affords other fishing opportunities, as well. The fishing landscape can be broken down into four distinct regions, each offering its own unique draw to anglers:

• Canal Region: The Erie Canal is a blossoming recreational waterway that’s underrated by many. While it’s most noted for boating and its historic value, fishing can be very good for warm water fish species like pike, bass, carp and panfish. Niagara Falls USA offers a free Niagara Falls USA Outdoor Guide. You can also find a weekly fishing report, which is currently recorded at (877) FALLS-US. Fishing updates can also be found by calling the Niagara County Fishing Hotline at 282-8992 ext. 4.
