HONOREES A Special Publication of The Daily Star ~ Wednesday, June 3, 2020

About the Scholar Recognition Program

T

he program began as an Otsego County Chamber of Commerce initiative. It has grown to be a program that enhances relationships between the business community, schools, and institutions of higher and continuing education. The program recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement by a member of the graduating classes of the public, private and parochial secondary schools in the DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory areas. It also recognizes a mentor nominated by each student scholar for having a significant and beneficial influence on his/her education. Student representatives are chosen on the basis of scholarship, as well as leadership and service to his or her school and community. Mentors can be from any grade level and any subject area, from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Scholar Recognition planning committee consists of representatives of NBT Insurance, DCMO BOCES, ONC BOCES, Catskill Area School Study Council, SUNY Oneonta, Hartwick College, SUNY Delhi, and Alan Lincourt Photography. In this publication, you will see a brief profile of each selected student and mentor being honored, along with the sponsors who have made this possible. Please enjoy!

Congratulations Students & Mentors! WEDNESDAY, JUNE 3, 2020

Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School Sponsored by Astrocom Electronics, Inc. Matthew Mosenson Matthew Mosenson is a very kind and determined student. Matthew’s unique experiences and positive outlook has allowed him to gain the reputation of a student who is hard working. For the 2018-19 school year, Matthew attended school in Lampang, Thailand. While in Thailand Matthew gained new found confidence and learned a lot about him. By doing this, Matthew feels he can do anything he puts his mind to. Matthew has pushed himself to not only be active in our drama and music programs, but to also participate on the varsity indoor and outdoor track teams for the first time as a senior. Matthew is appreciative for his time in Thailand; he feels that is what really pushed him to not be afraid to try something new. There is no doubt that Matthew Mosenson will continue to be a caring, dedicated student who will continue to grow and flourish.

Cooperstown Central School Sponsored by IBI Group Architects, Engineers and Landscape Architects Nora Jensen Nora brings to her classes a conscientious work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and a sincere desire to learn. With her energy and enthusiasm, her attitude is contagious. She motivates other students in her classes; she motivates me. During junior interviews for the National Honor Society, when asked to name a student- leader that they admired, one junior, replied, “Nora Jensen. She does it all: number one in her class, a three-sport athlete, a dancer, plays the clarinet – she’s great at everything. And, she’s so friendly and helpful.” This year in an elective course with classmates ranging from 9th to 12th grade, the younger students obviously look up to her. When I want to compliment a student, I say, “I want you to be next year’s Nora.”

Glen Noto “It is in Mr. Noto’s classes where history has come to life for me. He is a storyteller whose retelling of the past is intriguing and captivating. Mr. Noto has always found a way to connect beyond the classroom, whether it is a pep talk for my next athletic competition or a conversation about where I’m going to college. He has been an inspiration to me throughout high school, and I’ll certainly miss him next year. One of his most memorable quotes: always scan the buffet line first, that way you won’t fill your plate with salad in the beginning.”

DCMO BOCES — Chenango Campus Sponsored by IBI Group Architects, Engineers and Landscape Architects Sophia D’abbraccio Ms. Sophia D’abbraccio is a senior in her second year of the Visual Communications program at the DCMO BOCES Chenango Campus. I’ve only worked with Sophia for one year, but in that short time she has demonstrated the ability to be a true leader. Sophia is actively involved in numerous student organizations and her academics are excellent, but this is not what sets Sophia apart from her peers. She is selfless, always volunteers to assist when the need arises and she constantly advocates for her classmates. Sophia has been asked to assist her teacher during instructional time on numerous occasions, and she frequently donates her time to the main office staff on a variety of projects. Sophia never settles for mediocrity and always strives to succeed. We will miss her leadership upon graduation, but I am confident that the sky’s the limit for Sophia as she embarks on the next chapter in her academic career. Congratulations Sophia.

Sandra Sheldon “One adult that has made an impact on my educational path throughout my last two years at high school is an employee at the DCMO BOCES Chenango Campus. I’d like to proudly recognize the one and only, Mrs. Sandra Sheldon. Mrs.Sheldon has been my rock throughout my last two eventful years of high school as a junior and senior. She always, from day one believed that I could become something great, and make anything I touch transform into a beautiful art form. Mrs. Sheldon is the one person that I look to and count on about anything I’m going through. Given the impact Mrs. Sheldon has made in my life, I’d like to proudly recognize her as my mentor to honor for such a once in a lifetime award. Delaware Academy Central School Sponsored by Robert O. Mable Agency, Inc. Kayleigh Verspoor

Benjamin Moyse

I am honored to have the opportunity to discuss one of the most focused and driven students that has ever stepped foot in my classroom. Delaware Academy and Central Schools is proud to recognize Kayleigh Verspoor as this years Valedictorian. Kayleigh is self-motivated, curious, conscientious, mature, kind, and exceptionally intelligent. She is an incredibly devoted student, a multi-sport athlete, a major contributor in the district’s theatrical productions, and is an active member of both the school and local community. She is very active in her church and even works as a counselor at Delta Haven camp for individuals with developmental disabilities. I am most proud of something Kayleigh is not even aware of… that Kayleigh marches to the beat of her own drum. She does not allow others to distract her from her vision, her future goals and ambitions. With all of the pressure that is put on our students via peers, teachers, parents, and community, Kayleigh relentlessly plows ahead indifferent to the expectations that accompany being so successful in the classroom. This is a quality that we seldom see in someone so young, and this a most admirable trait that few possess in life. Kayleigh has, without a doubt, motivated me as a teacher, but even more importantly, she has motivated me as a person. She has reminded me to step back and appreciate everything. From the smallest acorn to the mightiest oak, Kayleigh’s attention to detail and desire to learn and observe remind me of myself as a kid. We sometimes lose our childhood passions, and I want to thank her for reinvigorating mine. “My mentor is Mr. Benjamin Moyse, a biology teacher at Delaware Academy Central School. I first got to know Mr. Moyse my freshman year as I was enrolled in his Living Environment class. Through the course of my time in high school Mr. Moyse provided not only a place to work on off periods, but also a safe place where I felt I could tell my frustrations and talk about what was going on in my busy schedule. Most importantly, Mr. Moyse provided advice and coaching as I was seeking direction in academics, careers and life.”

Laurens Central School Sponsored by Springbrook Jordan Weir I did not have Jordan as a student until his senior year, but his diligence and aptitude preceded him. While some seniors try to fill their schedule with study halls, he spent most of his mornings in my classroom. He was in both my Physics and Principles of Engineering classes. The aspect of Jordan that really stands out to me is his quiet demeanor. With maturity beyond his years, he recognizes that spoken words can never be taken back and thinks hard about what he says before verbalizing it. This reserved nature gives more weight to his words, causing teachers and peers alike to respect his thoughts and opinions. Even when faced with adversity, during this crisis, Jordan has persevered and continued to focus on his academics. These attributes and more make Jordan very deserving of this scholar recognition.

Brian Roecklein “I have only had the pleasure of being in class with Mr. Roecklein for my 12th grade year, but this time has shown me how great of a teacher and role model he is. During my time in physics and engineering classes he has pushed me and my peers to be better students and better people, finding ways to make everyone succeed. Mr. Roecklein makes learning interesting and fun, trying his best to pick topics that will be entertaining, and even taking input from students on what topics they want to do next. During these uncertain times surrounding the global pandemic he has made learning new content easier by being available to help, and he even created videos to explain the topics. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to know Mr. Roecklein and have class with him. The skills I gained in his classroom will most certainly help me in my future endeavors.”

Milford Central School Sponsored by NBT Insurance Agency, LLC Ethan Freer Ethan Freer is a rare specimen. He is modest yet proud, quiet and calculated, but also open and honest. As an honors student in my Biology class his freshman year, he was so unassuming that It made me curious about his abilities. I guess it is true that ‘good books don’t give up all their secrets at once’ because I am still to this day discovering his talents. His ability to soak in every detail of a lecture is astounding. Ethan’s work ethic is so tenacious that I often find myself trying to keep up. This level of intensity, and a willingness to work with anyone, makes him an impressive scholar and a leader in his class. For the past year, I have had the privilege to get to know him personally and I feel so thankful for this. He makes me laugh, he is a great listener and a truly caring young man.

Eamonn Hinchey “Mr. Hinchey was one of the first teachers I met when entering high school, he would always smile and wave whenever we met in passing. Mr. Hinchey is one of those high school teachers everybody likes and wishes they could have as a teacher for every class. In the two years he was my teacher, he pushed me to do my best work and inspired me to keep pushing. He taught me that trying your best, being a “tryhard,” is not a bad thing. I would not be where I am if he had not given me that advice.”

Alison Locke “Throughout my time as a student, Mrs. Locke has been the most influential teacher I’ve ever had. She showed me why I want to pursue science on a higher level. She doesn’t teach with the objective of us learning the subject. She teaches in a way that makes us want to learn the subject. She has given me so many extra opportunities to explore my love of science. By helping me to do things like interview physicists, participate in the Chemistry Olympiad, and by answering all of my random, extraneous questions, Mrs. Locke fed my passion for science and learning.”

“My third year at BOCES I was met with a smile in a colorful skirt. A smile I would learn later that day was my Visual Arts teacher, Ms. Andie Alban. From the beginning, she always led with a gentle, but firm, hand. Organized and efficient, Ms. Alban had a lot to offer in terms of knowledge about the real, competitive world of art. Her class was certainly not like the rest of my day. Her class was fast-paced, work intensive, and full of constructive criticism. At times I would grow frustrated, with the workload, with the software we worked in, sometimes even with Ms. Alban herself! However, perspective allowed me to see clearly that I was being prepared for the frustrations anyone faces in college, or more importantly the workplace. Ms. Alban silently offered me the realistic way the world works in a manageable portion, something I have yet to experience from any other mentor. Ms. Alban, you are the master of balancing the sink-or-swim mentality with unconditional patience and kindness, and for that I thank you.” —Isabel

Oneonta City Schools Sponsored by Sharon Springs Garage Alexander Bitterman I began to really get to know Alexander Bitterman when, as a 10th grader, he told me about his plan to attend Harvard University that summer for a program related to Genome Editing. His excitement and enthusiasm associated to this opportunity was palpable. Since then, he continues to impress with the young man that he has become. Academically, Alex is an exceptional student. He is ranked first in his very competitive class and his scores have been consistent throughout his high school career. He has proved himself to be incredibly valuable as a student, an athlete and a musician – he has raised the bar for the rest of his class. Alex is an incredibly hard worker who takes his academics seriously. I can say that without a doubt, he is one of the finest individuals that that we have had enrolled in our school in a long time. His mature outlook and willingness to “go the extra mile” will certainly benefit him as he pursues his future goals.

Jennifer Sitts “A mentor that’s had an especially profound impact on my high school career is Mrs. Sitts. I’ve been lucky enough to have her as a teacher for both of my years as an upperclassmen in three different classes. Mrs. Sitts’ passion for what she teaches is overwhelming and she is always willing to take time out of her day to teach a difficult concept to a student. Not only this, but she is also extremely caring. A couple days before the AP test she surprised every student by personally coming to our houses with a goody bag and a note saying how proud she was of each of us. This passion and care for each one of her students is truly admirable, and I feel it has taught me a lot. Mr. Willis always stood out to me because he really understood and could engage with me as an individual and equal, not just another student. Even in study halls, we would have conversations about everything from books to music to current events. Mr. Willis is my astronomy teacher, and though the class is an elective, I’ve learned a lot, and enjoyed many conversations. T

he Scholar Recognition program was born of an idea brought to the Otsego county Chamber by Daniel Swift, retired publisher of The Daily Star. Mr Swift’s dream was to find an opportunity to recognize high achieving students and the people who make a difference in their lives. The short list includes the teachers, coaches and mentors who inspire them, the families that guided their lives, and the administrators that lead our schools. To make this event possible, a larger partnership was needed. In 2002 the Otsego County Chamber’s commitment to enhancing relationships between the business community, our schools and institutions of higher and continuing education helped bring Daniel’s dream to fruition. Because so many of our school administrators, business and educational partners make a long term commitment to support this worthy endeavor, we once again celebrate the Daniel B. Swift Scholar Recognition Program.
