About the Scholar Recognition Program Scholar Recognition The program began as an Otsego County Chamber of Commerce initiative. It has grown to be a program that enhances relationships between the business community, schools, and institutions of higher and continuing education. The program recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement by members of the graduating classes of the public, private and parochial secondary schools in the DCMO and ONC BOCES supervisory areas. It also recognizes a mentor nominated by each student scholar for having a significant and beneficial influence on his/her education. Student representatives are chosen on the basis of scholarship, as well as leadership and service to his or her school and community. Teachers can be from any grade level and any subject area, from kindergarten through twelfth grade. The Scholar Recognition planning committee consists of representatives of NBT Insurance, DCMO BOCES, ONC BOCES, Catskill Area School Study Council, SUNY Oneonta, Alan Lincourt Photography, The Daily Star, SFCU, and school superintendents and a district superintendent. In this booklet, you will see a brief profile of each selected student and teacher being honored, along with a profile of the sponsors who have made this program possible. Please enjoy!

Scholar Recognition

May May17, 11,,2022 2022

The Scholar Recognition program was born of an idea brought to the Otsego County Chamber by Daniel Swift, retired publisher of The Daily Star. Mr. Swift’s dream was to find an opportunity to recognize high achieving students and the people who made a difference in their lives. The short list includes the teachers, coaches and mentors who inspire them, the families that guided their lives, and the administrators that lead our schools. To make this event possible a larger partnership was needed. In 2002, the Otsego County Chamber’s commitment to enhancing relationships between the business community, our schools and institutions of higher and continuing education helped bring Daniel’s dream to fruition. Because so many of our school administrators, business and educational partners made a long term commitment to support this worthy endeavor, we continue to celebrate the Daniel B. Swift Scholar Recognition Program. 3

Collin Smith

I am beyond grateful to be receiving this recognition and it was very hard for me to choose just one individual who had a significant influence on me. Throughout my high school years, there have been countless staff members who have motivated me to be who I am today. I have decided to choose Mr. Smith to celebrate this huge honor with me because in the few years that he has been in Afton, he not only influenced me in the academic realm, but also the personal realm. Mr. Smith is the type of person who you can joke around with, but also have serious conversations with. He will listen completely and always comes back with the positive side of things. His constant reminders that I am more than just my class rank made me realize that even though I am graduating as salutatorian, my hard work and drive to be the best possible version of myself is far greater than a number. — Mallory Carman

Dan Cole

Mr. Cole has always been an incredible teacher to me and a great mentor and friend as well. When I first came to Charlotte Valley four years ago, I had very few people who shared the same interests as me; however, I was surprised to see that one of my teachers did. Mr. Cole was my science teacher, who not only shared my interests in movies, games, and comics, but also taught me that learning could be fun. I learned so much in his classes, and he was always my favorite because we bonded over all kinds of similar things. I had never had many people who shared my interests growing up, so having an authority figure who liked the same things I did was amazing, and had a huge impact on my time at Charlotte Valley. Mr. Cole showed me that it was okay to like what I like, and I will forever be thankful for that, and I feel that he has truly influenced me as a person and who I am today. — Noah Heyn

Oskar Webster

Oskar is an exceptional student. Many would describe him as worldly, knowledgeable, and very capable of high-level discussions that deal with complex topics. His unassuming nature and quiet demeanor earns the respect of his peers and teachers. His assignments and level of knowledge are high, but he is humble and always willing to assist his peers to understand a concept. In addition to his academics, he is one of the hardest working, dedicated athletes in our school. He is hands down one of the most coachable young men I have ever had the pleasure to work with. His extra effort and respect does not go unnoticed by his coaches, teammates, or athletes from other schools. His dedication to his sport and team is unrivaled as a natural, unselfish leader. I am beyond honored this young man chose me as an important mentor in his life. I have no doubt that he will spread his wings over the next four years and continue to push himself, take chances and be extremely successful.

Melissa Jaquay

Mrs. Melissa Jaquay has been a teacher and coach at Cherry Valley-Springfield for decades, and has made a lasting impact on everybody who has come through the District. Whether by sharing stories of her husband and children, or by offering them a place to sleep on her couch, she makes every kid feel like a part of her family. When she’s not running around the track shouting at athletes to move the hurdles off the track, she can be found sitting at her desk grading papers and getting the team registered for track meets. Mrs. Jaquay works tirelessly to prepare kids, both physically for important track meets and simply for life after high school. There are few educators who have done as much for a school community as Mrs. Jaquay has in her illustrious career. — Oskar Webster

Liam Spencer

To teach Liam Spencer is to watch curiosity unfold. It has been a pleasure to teach and learn from this young man. From analyzing a text, to the power of his skills as a writer, to understanding the intricacies of a story, Liam has an unquenching thirst for knowledge. He asks thought-provoking questions. He changes his mind. He supports his ideas with evidence. He is the litmus test for all teachers. From the classroom to the athletic field, and into the community, Liam Spencer has integrity: he is kind, aware, and sees the world in a beautiful way. The measure of a great student is not found on the answers of a multiple-choice exam or on a high SAT score; rather, the measure of a great student is in the wonder they hold, the space they give, and in the conversations they discover. Liam is a poet and an archeologist of ideas. He will find great success in all pursuits and on this journey. Liam will show people what greatness really looks like; he has already defined it for Cooperstown Central School.

Rebecca Burk-Sciallo

I have always loved science classes, but for the past two years English class has been especially enjoyable and thoughtprovoking for me, which reflects Mrs. Burk-Sciallo’s impact in the classroom. She finds a way to keep things fun even when we are having difficult class discussions. She is knowledgeable, yet humble—a role model for every student. During the pandemic, she was supportive of her students, sending us stickers and postcards. I know I speak for my classmates and not just myself when I say that Mrs. Burk-Sciallo’s kindness and enthusiasm for teaching has helped me grow as a student and a person. Thank you, Mrs. BurkSciallo. —Liam Spencer

Mr. Glennon has always played a very significant role in my life. Since elementary school, he has been there to help and encourage me whenever I needed him. The idea of learning history was never really intriguing to me, but that all changed when Mr. Glennon became my history teacher. Joshua Houck is a serious young man with a great sense of humor and a keen appreciation for the ironies of life. He has little patience for nonsense, but his heart is enormous, demonstrating compassion and understanding beyond his years. I was lucky to be Joshua’s French teacher. His unique qualities are evident in the intellectual curiosity and excellent work ethic that he consistently brings to his academic work. He is open-minded and curious about the world. I also taught an Introduction to Philosophy class, and Joshua just reveled in the course material. His natural flair for reasoning, logic and argumentation also contributed to some great writing for his English and history classes. Mr. Casey, his Global and History teacher, says that “Joshua is the definition of a one in a million student,” and I could not agree more. He is an awesome student and an even better person.

Naomi Graham

Mrs. Naomi Graham has made a major impact on me during my high school years. She introduced me to philosophy, which intrigued me from the start and has created an ever-growing passion to learn more on the subject. In addition, she has helped me to be a more open-minded person. She made me realize how vast the world is, how much there is to explore, and she deserves credit for showing me the independence I will gain after graduation. Lastly, she taught me that it does not matter where you go to college, it just depends on your attitude towards it. —Joshua Houck

Sawyer Eckberg

Joe DiMaggio said that, “a person always doing his or her best becomes a natural leader.” Sawyer Eckberg is a natural leader. His growth— academically, athletically, and personally—has been a pleasure to witness. While quiet in the classroom, he was engaged. I was always able to count on him for depth of discussion and further questions. Sawyer learns for the sake of learning rather than for the sake of a grade, and that was often evident in his thoughts about the work we studied in literature. His connections were not only relevant to the reading and the assignment, but were also relevant beyond the classroom. His work is a reflection of his character. He is honest, reliable, and respectful, to others and to himself. His high school accomplishments foreshadow success in his future endeavors. I wish him well as he pursues his education in engineering.

Ms. Webb has helped me with my accomplishments throughout high school by proofreading my work, writing letters of recommendation, and challenging me within her classroom overall. Involve me and I learn.” From my first class with Mrs. Mileski, I was inspired by her dedication to capturing every classmate’s attention and finding some way to bring interest to a topic. All of us have leaders in our lives, from novels or real life. A leader doesn’t have to be a person who gives orders, but instead someone who sees space for improvement and encourages others to reach for that vision. Mrs. Mileski is one of the amazing individuals who has inspired me to work harder, think more deeply, and reach for my dreams. — Patricia Higgins

Valley Heights CHRISTIAN ACADEMY

Trinity Gillingham

Trinity May Gillingham has been a kind, caring, and willing student who has helped make Valley Heights Christian Academy a welcoming place. As a student, Trinity has had to overcome many challenges and struggles, but she has persevered, worked hard, willingly giving of her time to help others and accomplished great things as she works toward her future goals. Trinity has made great improvements in her effort, attitude, and quality of work. She has spent many hours student-aiding in the elementary school, learning lines for Christmas plays, editing our school yearbook, and encouraging and helping students and teachers alike. She truly enjoys helping people and is looking to find ways to do that with her career choice. Trinity, who has a polite and responsible manner, is a joy to teach and has high expectations for herself.

It is easy to see that she loves and cares about her students very much. She makes it her personal duty to make sure that her students are safe. When you need something, you can always go to Mrs. Austin for help because she is so reliable. I personally am thankful to have her as a teacher because of how much she has helped me grow. I don’t know where I would be today without her guidance and support. —Trinity Gillingham

Emma Yakalis

Emma is an exceptional student and person. Her achievements include many academic milestones, but also many top-quality musical accomplishments. Emma has been involved with the Music Department since elementary school. She is a singer, plays the viola, and percussionist. Emma has participated in a variety of All-County Music ensembles, including elementary chorus, junior high band, orchestra, jazz choir, and high school band, along with the prestigious NYSSMA Zone 8 Area All-State Chorus. Emma has been an important part of the school musicals. She played the part of Beth in Little Women and delighted audiences with Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again, from Phantom of the Opera at last year’s Musical Revue. Once quite shy, Emma would never speak her mind or stand out amount her peers, but she has grown so much and has become a leader in her classes. She is a respected performer and musician.

Priya Beckmann

I have had the pleasure of getting to know Priya over the last three years as a student in my Living Environment, CGCC Forensics, and AP Biology classes. Her excellent work ethic and passion for science allowed her to be successful in all of these courses. She plans to continue in science in college, focusing on plant science. I am confident that she will go on to accomplish great things and I will miss having her in class next year.

Juile Wawrzynek

Mrs. Wawrzynek has always been one of my favorite teachers due to her fascination with the field of science. I am also extremely interested in this topic, her way of teaching may have contributed largely to this fascination. The way in which she teaches has proven to be very beneficial for my style of learning. She will often pause and work out concepts that I struggle on, and stay after class with me to help address some of the questions I have. I applaud her in that she truly cares about the knowledge her students retain, and will spend extra time on something if it doesn’t make sense to even one of the students in her classes. —Priya Beckmann

Iriyah Haley

Iriyah Haley is one of the most driven people you will ever meet. Beyond the classroom, Iriyah excels on the soccer field, the basketball court, and the softball diamond. While in competition, her grit and tenacity separate her from her peers. Her academic and athletic successes are truly a result of her hard work and internal drive. Not only does Iriyah excel in those arenas, but she is an amazing daughter, sister, and friend. The relationships Iriyah develops mean everything to her; she is of high character and is unquestionably committed to the people she holds close to her heart. As Iriyah moves on to SUNY Brockport to study exercise science, she will continue to face all her challenges with the same ferocity she always has. More importantly, Iriyah will continue to have a positive impact on the people she’s around and the environment she’s in. Worcester is a better place because Iriyah has walked our halls. She will always be part of our family! #ohana

Christopher Kaltenbach

I want to start off by saying how thankful I am to have had you as a teacher and as a coach. I wouldn’t be the confident, and sometimes grumpy, person I am today without you. You have helped me realize the important things in life and what I should focus on. You have been one of the only adults that I have been completely comfortable with and go to for advice knowing what you’ll say is to help me and not judge me. You have pushed me to be better, and because of that, I have been successful and become who I want to be and will continue to be. Thank you for loving me and supporting me; you’re the best role model I could ask for. —Iriyah Haley
