Exploring the Prussian Legacy at Hotel LUC, located at Berlin´s Gendarmenmarkt
The Prussian heritage inspired the boutique hotel at Gendarmenmarkt. The Marriott-owned “Autograph Collection” offers its guests a stylish stay in the heart of Berlin. At Hotel LUC, visitors experience an exhibition of artworks wich can be seen through every room. With the creativity of photographer András Dobi and the ARTOUI Concept Gallery, over 250 images hang under the high ceilings of the 92 rooms, in the corridors, and in the lobby. Uniforms meet unique Berlin pieces, Prussians meet Punk, historical clothing meets provocative tattoos for this unique art concept.

Design and Interior with the geometric clarity of the Friedrichsstadt
The Hotel LUC was reopened by Munich Hotel Partners as a member of the Marriott Autograph Collection after a thorough renovation. Located in the heart of Berlin, overlooking the French Cathedral at the Gendarmenmarkt, it appears as a tribute to the lesser-known sides of Prussia: lightness, humor, and a wink, all set in Prussian blue and with magnificent style elements by interior designer Oana Rosen.
The design and interior of Hotel LUC reflect the geometric clarity of Friedrichstadt. The hotel’s name is derived from the French philosopher Voltaire’s nickname for his friend Frederick II of Prussia, “Luc”. Interestingly, when read in reverse (“cul”), the word means “ass” in French, adding a playful and humorous touch to the hotel’s concept. In summary, Hotel LUC welcomes it´s guests with a charming and witty atmosphere.
The Potato Order of 1756
At the peak of the food shortage during his time, Frederick the Great tried to make potatoes more palatable to the Germans. The potato order was issued, and after 15 orders, Frederick the Great finally had his royal tubers guarded by soldiers. The Germans were convinced: if the king eats it, it can’t be that bad.
András Dobi has included this and many other themes in the Hotel LUC series. The motifs in the collection are convincing on both an aesthetic and a content level, with each photo telling at least one more or less big story.

Michael Griesbeck, Artist
You have your own special way of dealing with colours. Your distinctive style not only rests on harmonious colour compositions but also reflects in the structure of the canvas. Would you confirm this and from where do you draw the inspiration for the same?
Inspiration lies in ordinary life. But to this very day, I like to be inspired by abandoned urban buildings with blemishes and wounds, such as the former Diamalt works in Allach near Munich. Open concrete walls from which the structures of old steel brackets peep out were the basis for my series “Under Construction”.
You already mention your iconic series “Under Construction”. Personally, it reminds me of the early works of Jackson Pollock but your art goes deeper through the rough surfaces of your canvases. How do you come up with such a defining element of style?
On the one hand, I am an artist, on the other hand, I work professionally in real estate as an authorized signatory. That does something to you and I can incorporate what I experience into my work. Painting brings out every emotion and I enjoy this freedom, that I can express myself personally, creatively and artistically in painting.
Some buildings lack soul, in contrast to your art. You have created another series called “Noodles”. What were the thoughts behind this art project?
Michael smiles. ‘’Noodles” are mainly spaghetti. Whether they are wholemeal, normal or sepia-coloured noodles, curved or straight, extra short or extra long, it doesn’t matter. They are all very welcoming to me, not only in culinary terms, but also as design goods, and are therefore always worthy of a canvas.
That sounds like “delicious” poetry. You basically see art in mundane things. Is that a correct assumption?
You can surely imagine how wonderful it is to stroll through Italian markets to be inspired for the next piece of work. That’s exactly what my “Noodles” represent - the feeling of this way of life. Transformed onto canvas, baked, layered, and preserved, sanded down and uncovered again, and then covered once more with transparent layers of paint. This process is repeated until a unique canvas is created, much like a delicate spaghetti sauce - seemingly straightforward, yet incomparably good.

AVANTGARDE | NFT as Digital Art merges with the Blockchain
Art is becoming an investment, thanks to the trading of digital shares. Currently, many artworks are being given digital avatars. So-called non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are stored on the blockchain and certify ownership of a digital copy of great masterpieces. In recent years, there has been massive investment in the NFT sector, with many startups aiming to introduce these new technologies.
Several artists in the art industry offer blockchain services to increase market transparency, trace the origin, verify ownership, and enable artists to receive commissions throughout the entire life span of artwork. Blockchain could help solve one of the main problems in the art world. The Fine Art Experts Institute (FAEI) in Geneva released a report stating that over 50% of the art pieces examined by the institute in 2014 were either forgeries or attributed to the wrong artists. The most obvious benefits of creating an infrastructure for tokenizing transactions with fractions of artworks are quick to market access, portfolio diversification, lower transaction costs, and high liquidity compared to traditional art trading. Blockchain represents the democratization of art by lowering entry barriers and inviting a diverse audience into the art world.
In 2015, Verisart was the first company to apply blockchain technology to the physical art market. “NFTs are a completely new distribution channel in art and have opened up entirely new areas of opportunity for Investors,” said Gibtner.

Blockchain represents the democratization of art because it reduces barriers and opens the door for a diverse audience to enter the art world.
The founders Benjamin Gibtner and Daniel Cid Gómez are researching new opportunities in the art industry.
Verisart has certified works by Ai Weiwei and Shepard Fairey and raised $2.5 million in funds from blockchain investors. In 2017, the TEFAF Art Market Online Focus published a survey showing that 75% of auction houses are considering offering some form of blockchain technology within the next five years. Christie’s, one of the world’s leading auction houses, held its first Art+Tech Summit in 2018 with a focus on “Exploring Blockchain.” In July 2018, the blockchain platform Maecenas offered fractional ownership of Andy Warhol’s “14 Small Electric Chairs” (1980). 1.5% of the artwork was offered for sale in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum.
The total value of the cryptocurrency share of the work was $5.6 million USD. This transaction went down in the art and technology history books. In November 2018, Christie’s New York partnered with blockchain-backed registry startup Artory. The $318 million USD sale of the Barney A. Ebsworth collection was recorded entirely on the blockchain. The registry tracked ownership and allowed bidders to remain anonymous. This transaction made history, enabling a new era of trust in provenance and authenticity. In April 2018, ArtChain received $4 million USD in funding within 48 hours. TheMelbourne-based startup aims to bring high-quality artwork to the blockchain, with a focus on the Chinese art market. AllPublicArt enables artists and art collectors to do business with each other via smart contracts, eliminating the need to pay commissions to intermediaries.
This not only reduces costs but also ensures the validity of each peer-to-peer verified transaction. AllPublicArt intends to use blockchain to minimize cases of art forgery and verify ownership of artworks. The electronic marketplace aims to streamline art trading by ensuring transparency and efficiency at every step of the process. Founded in 2017, Masterworks allows investors to buy shares representing ownership of masterpieces by artists such as Warhol and Monet. The experienced team has already created companies worth over $1 billion USD. In its first offering, the company offered a $1.8 million USD investment in Andy Warhol’s“1 Colored Marilyn” (1979) - with an affordable minimum investment of $1 thousand USD. In 2018, Codex Protocol received $5 million USD from blockchain investors Pantera Capital. The company offers a decentralized ledger for art and collectibles. Each user of the Codex network has a unique digital signature that ensures authenticity and anonymity. TheArtToken (TAT) has received over $11 million USD in funding to date. TAT represents fractional ownership of valuable artworks through security tokens. Artory has received $7.3 million USD in 2019 funding from an early Spotify investor and other backers. The blockchain-based art ledger allows users to track provenance and title data, as well as record sales of artworks. The chains of custody are authentic and tamperproof.

Kai Stuht specializes in the photography of VIPs, celebrities and big personalities in the fashion industry. For years, he has worked as a photographer and as a creative director, he is an internationally acclaimed trendsetter with his very own style in editorial design. Born in Hamburg in 1964, Kai Stuht started taking photographs in the ´90s. His photographic development went very quickly from action photography to the staging of athletes and portraits to global fashion campaigns.
Colour, Architecture & Spirituality
Among other things, he worked on the worldwide LUMIX campaign for Panasonic’s S1R camera. He revealed that it was one of the most difficult projects of his career. The quest for an appropriate location led him to India. There, he rode through the country on his motorbike until he found an old fort on the border between India and Pakistan, which was the determined location.

In 1999, Kai Stuht and Tina Weisser founded the creative agency Starshot for photography and conceptual design.
From 2003 to 2009, Kai Stuht was publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazines “USELESS - Fashion Vs. Athletes” and “The Red Flag”.
In 2008, he became the third German photographer to join the renowned photo agency “Contour by Getty Images”.

Kai Stuht used to own a large photo studio in Berlin-Mitte, but at some stage, he decided to break out of the construct and devoted himself to a new concept of life and business.
The creative free-spirit is always exploring new projects
At the moment, he is traveling all over Europe with his Creative Caravan. Because he wants to feel free, see the world, work artistically and, at the same time, “knit the tapestry of his life”. The artist devotes himself to new creative works, such as the conversion of a double-decker bus with an integrated DJ booth and - true to style - a photo studio-to-go, into which he likes to invite strangers. In doing so, he asks the subjects to slip into different clothes. That’s right! The artist has also made space for the props in his bus.

Not far from Art Basel and only a few minutes away from the old town, ARTOUI exhibits it´s art collection in over 239 rooms and 9 meeting rooms at the Basel Marriott Hotel.
The inspiration for the new corporate art concept in the hotel is the fine art series ‘Photoreographia’ by András Dobi, which won the Fujifi lm GFX Challenge Grant Award. It is all about dance and the right exposure (magazine pages 22-27). Coincidentally, the makers of the hotel saw the photography series and were immediately fascinated by the engaging visuals. So the direction was set and within a few weeks, the bespoke art concept was produced, true to the motto “Basel bewegt” (Basel moves). Among many other things, the outdoor area of the trade fair with the main hall during Art Basel and the Stadtcasino served as the backdrop.
The final result is engaging and enhances the well-chosen decor and interior.

The artist himself was fascinated by the city and the Swiss environment. He was on a constant search for the perfect subject, always inspired by dance, movement, and time. It is clear that the former dancer feels thematically “right at home”. And it is precisely this passion that can be felt in every single photograph exhibited. The art was conceptualized in ARTOUI’s own gallery.

You have an outstanding signature style. Was it always clear to you that you wanted to become a multidisciplinary artist?
I would say that it was important for me to become a professional artist, so I received a traditional art education - I work in different genres, I do paintings and portraits, I also do shell designs and fashion illustrations, and design costumes for theatre and cinema. So you can call me multidisciplinary, but I think the term can generally be interpreted differently.
What is your favorite colour and why?
Your question makes me smile. Of course, I have favourite colours that change depending on the period, just as Picasso had a blue period and a pink period. Nevertheless, I think I have a favourite shade in each colour, for example, emerald green, ultramarine, and magenta. Colour is one of the most important means of expressing the artist’s intention.

How did you come to connect between fashion and art, and what is your personal connection with them in your day-today life?
I have a Master’s degree in costume design and have always been very fascinated by the history of costumes, fashion, cinema, theatre, and literature. In my paintings, I have always paid a lot of attention to the wardrobe, especially the styles of the different periods. I have been interested in it from a very early age. One of the most beautiful and impressive impressions of my childhood was an exhibition dedicated to the work of Yves Saint Laurent, which I had the pleasure of visiting thrice. Years later, I was impressed by the retrospective “Savage Beauty” by Alexander McQueen at the Victoria and Albert Museum. These two designers are deeply loved and revered as fashion geniuses by me, and later became the heroes of my painting “Fashion Olympus”.
What are you working on at the moment, Miss Pyrkova?
After learning that Alessandro Michele had left the post of Gucci’s creative director, I wanted to dedicate a series to this highly accomplished designer who created his very own aesthetic philosophy. He brought a new direction, a unique reincarnation of the famous fashion house. Under his guidance, the Gucci brand and aesthetic have changed dramatically - a recognizable abundance of décor, a mix of prints and textures, garments with bows and ruffles, playful accessories; a new look, style, aesthetic, codes, and messages. Similarly, I also always have many new ideas, but I prefer not to talk about them in advance, I want to surprise my collectors and viewers.

The art project titled ‘Photoreographia’ is the curation of a photographic concept based on the resolution of contradiction: dance as movement through time and photography within a moment. To achieve this, the art photographer András Dobi asked several professional choreographers from all over Germany to choreograph dance pieces for this special occasion. In 2022, András Dobi was one of the five global winners of the Fujifilm GFX Challenge Grant, which gave him the opportunity to develop this art project to its current state.
‘Photoreographia’ is an act of artistic fusion. A specific choreography designed for the occasion is captured in a unique image. It represents the choreography with all the artistic decisions contained in it. The two main differences between traditional stage-oriented choreography and ‘photoreographia’ are linearity in time and orientation in space. Since the main aspect of this art project is to represent an entire sequence in a single image, the end result is a visual imprint of the choreographer’s decision on where and how the dancer should move.

“I feel at home between photography and dance”

In this case - temporal linearity, one of the most important factors in choreography, loses its meaning. When the viewer sees the final result of ‘Photoreographia’, it becomes clear that the usual beginning and end of a schedule are no longer significant in terms of time. This gives the pictures a unique character. The viewer can decide for himself how he experiences and understands the images and thus also the choreographic work. Some say they see them as an imprint of the choreographer’s artistic signature. What a coincidence, because the word ‘choreography’, which comes from the Greek, literally means ‘dance script’. The unusual perspective of ‘Photoreographia’ also encourages dance experts to rethink the way they use space in their work. The traditional physical relationship between the audience and the performer does not exist in this art project. The realization of this fact opens up a range of new possibilities for the choreographer. The importance of the physical dimensions of the stage shifts from front to top. On the other hand, András Dobi only shows these possibilities to the choreographers. During the creative process, the photographer never influences the artistic choices of the dancers.
Rudolf Laban war einer der bedeutendsten Vertreter der Schaffung eines Orientierungssystems im Raum für bewegte menschliche Körper. Sein Vermächtnis hat András schon sehr früh in seiner professionellen Tanzkarriere fasziniert.
Rudolf Laban was one of the most significant advocators of creating an orientation system in space for moving human bodies. His legacy fascinated András very early in his professional dance career. In fact, part of his thesis was on Laban’s work. The combination of his work and András’ stage experience sparked the need to develop ‘Photoreographia’.

This extraordinary project allows choreographers to work on a different level of understanding and András Dobi to create an innovative format through photography to convey Photoreographia in a unique way. This makes it a true artistic collaboration. The camera is placed on the light carrier system, pointing downwards, and then clicked from above. The choice of perspective has two main reasons: It creates an unusual experience for the viewer, who can see the entire dance choreography spread out on the stage, making it look like an abstract form shaped by the dancers and choreographers according to their artistic choices. The composition of the images is unified. The black background supports the complex movement shown in a single image. The filming itself takes place on a theatre stage, which is lit with a normal theatre lighting system. The dancer repeats the choreography a few times while the photographer captures the movements. With each “run”, a new set of photos is created. As a former dancer, András Dobi is well aware of the dancer’s abilities. In this sense, he also wants to create a fascinating experience for the dancer. As soon as the photos of the dance pieces are taken, the best sets of photos are selected and assembled into final individual images. From this small group of individual images, András selects the most outstanding images based on his artistic decision.
In a complex artistic collaboration between the choreographers and the photographer András Dobi, an attempt is made to raise ‘Photoreographia’ to a scientific level that could support the development of the choreography. With his humble work, Eadweard Muybridge, British pioneer in photographic technology, made a very important contribution to photography, biology, fine arts, sports and science. András believes that through this collaboration the staff can emulate his commitment and help choreographers in their future artistic and technical development. The potential of this art project is beyond imagination. Therefore, András will dedicate the next few years to exploring what ‘Photoreographia’ can offer us. The connection between dance and photography is obvious since photography has reached the technical level of being able to capture the rupture of a moment. It allows the viewer to experience the movements of dance in a way that was not possible before. For obvious reasons, photography has been given a purely documentary role in this piece. Since the first dance photograph, many changes have taken place in both photography and the performing arts, especially dance. In the 20th and 21st centuries, the way choreography is made has evolved in parallel with the new technologies invented in the camera industry. Regardless of these developments on both sides, the roles of dance and photography in this relationship have not changed significantly.

Art and Inflation HedgeOnly for Collectors?
For many investors, investing in art is not only associated with money but also with emotion, preservation of cultural heritage, and passion.
For wealthy collectors, art is both a passion and a welcome inflation shield. Art promotes cultural assets and is an important part of history and democracy. Art differs from most traditional investments such as shares or real estate. Works of art do not yield a regular income. Moreover, storing and insuring art costs money. So how can collectors profit from their collections? What are collecting strategies that work? We talk about relevant factors and examples of successful art collectors. Most assets generate regular income: Real estate brings rental income. Business holdings and shares bring income, generate returns and can pay regular dividends. Most traditional investments are expected to make money even without being sold. In the case of works of art, the cash flow is negative before they are sold. Most traditional investments are quite liquid: you can sell your shares within minutes. With real estate, a sale can take weeks, months or even years and is comparable to art in terms of liquidity. Although it is a complex investment segment, many collectors benefit financially from art curation. Especially at present, it is very exciting to know that the art market hardly correlates with the stock market. In short, especially in a time of inflation, the art market remains independent. Collectors and investors can thus build up a stable alternative to the stock market by investing in art. The correlation factor of the art market to the stock market is very low. Art is hardly influenced by the ups and downs of the stock market.
This means, in other words, that the art market is less affected by financial crises. That is why experienced collectors often work with professional curators, auction houses, museums and experienced gallery owners as well as specialists from the insurance sector. Over time, they select artworks by individual artists, in a particular medium, material or style, otherwise art from a particular period in history or from a particular region or country. These artworks belong to specific themes and complement each other.
The Legacy
Preserving the artwork and the condition of the collection is extremely important when it comes to at least maintaining the value of a collection. Depending on the material of the artwork, conservation measures can be completely different. Adequate insurance coverage is also important in this context and needs to be reassessed regularly.
In practice, this means that the storage of artworks requires regular cash outflows for conservation purposes and should be taken into account when calculating the return on investment. For exceptional works of art, a museum exhibition is like a seal of quality that usually increases the value of a collection and the reputation of the collector.

Besides, it is a good way to reduce the overall cost of storing an art collection. Incidentally, this step can bring tax advantages in many countries. There are no general rules when it comes to art investments. Some collectors follow their own taste and only buy what they really like. Some anticipate trends, and others buy anti-cyclically. Most collectors build close relationships with artists, art dealers, and auction houses and constantly process information to learn about ideas and stick to them. Networking among collectors also helps experienced art buyers decide when to buy and which artworks to select. We live in a postmodern age, and even though some art buyers think that only a dead artist is a good artist, there are also ART MARKET RADAR great collections that focus on contemporary art by living artists and on hard-to-exhibit artworks such as performance art, huge installations or video art. From an investment perspective, the risks in these areas are far above average: storage, logistics, handling and insurance are difficult to calculate. Consequently, these artworks are usually bought by very experienced collectors and art lovers.
Once a collector has established a functioning network, he/she is able to select artworks, exhibit them or bring them to the right auction and sell them within a short time to other market participants who have observed that artworks by this collector have risen even more in price after the sale. Consequently, artists, galleries, specialists in auction houses and other collectors watch every move of this collector. This brings with it market power. To outsiders it may look like a perpetual motion machine, but it also means that this collector is doing his homework properly and is constantly working to increase the value of his collection and his standing in the art world. Failures always spread faster than success stories, which is why collectors with continuous success stories are highly regarded in the art market.

Perspectives otherwise hidden from the ordinary spectators are presented by the breathtaking snapshots of the band Linkin Park captured by Joe Hahn for his project ‘CARRY ON’. The musician and visual artist photographed the band Linkin Park on tour in 2017. The interesting and emotional artworks were produced by ARTOUI and exhibited on a world art tour in China, USA, Korea, Japan and Europe in 2019.
The fact that the photographs were taken at a rather challenging moment for the artist is only revealed by the name of the project, which means “to go on”. He himself says that the photo series reminds him of key moments that he captured through the lens of life during those days. His hope is to share these images with people and leave behind a visual legacy alongside the music as he continues through life.
