New teachers’ contract satisfies both parties By Wendell Hutson Depending on whom you listen to the tentative contract the Chicago Teachers Union agreed to benefits teachers, school administrators and most importantly students. According to Chicago Public Schools, teachers will get a 3 percent raise this school year and 2 percent raises for each of the next two years. If the school district and Chicago Teachers Union elect to extend the contract to a fourth, optional year, teachers would get a 3 percent raise. Although Karen Lewis, president of the Chicago Teachers Union, said pay was never a sticking issue during negotiations. “We did not want teachers being evaluated based on how well their students performed on tests because we know that there are other issues that affect a child’s school performance that is beyond a teacher’s control,” said Lewis. “There are children who are homeless; live in economically depressed communities where they are exposed to violence and drugs; (Continued on page 3)

Richton Park board fires guidance counselor By J. Coyden Palmer A counselor at Rich Central High School in Olympia Fields, who made headlines last month after he published a book that talked graphically about young girls in relationships and sex, was fired Tuesday night. Bryan Craig, author of “It’s Her Fault,” and who was also the girl’s basketball coach until his resignation, did not comment on the ruling when reached by telephone. He had been on administrative
leave since Aug. 31. He referred all questions to his attorney. The Rich Township High School District 227 board voted unanimously Tuesday night at Rich East High School in Park Forest to fire Craig, who had been an employee of the district since 2004. Over the past couple of weeks board members have expressed outrage over the book and released a statement to the press after their decision. (Continued on page 3)
