“You got to stop the killing” Pfleger gets OK for one-day gang peace

By Chinta Strausberg From the moment hundreds prayed at Saint Sabina Church and began marching throughout the Auburn/Gresham community calling for peace, Saint Sabina’s recent special guest, former NBA star Isiah Thomas, quickly became a magnet drawing the attention of youth he told to “stop the genocide and stop the killing.”

Thomas was a guest of Father Michael L. Pfleger, who was joined by Senator Jacqueline Collins (D-16th), Ald. Latasha Thomas (17th), John W. Rogers, Jr., CEO of Ariel Investments, CeaseFire’s Ameena Matthews, Muslim leader Rami Mashashibi, executive director of the Inner City Muslim Action Network, Marilyn Velez, lead coordinator for the Neighborhood Recovery Initiatives, Rev. Autry Phillips, the Purpose Over Pain group headed by Pam and Tommy Bosley who lost their son to gun violence, Jafar Carllouet from the Al-Hafeez Initiative and other groups.

The broad support included Matthews, the daughter of Jeff Fort and a volunteer for the Violence Interrupters, who said, “We’re here to show support. We’re taking back our streets and educating our young guys and changing their mindsets about how they feel about violence…. Repetition is the key of learning.” She teaches youth that “it’s unacceptable to hurt themselves by doing 100-years in jail for hurting another person. It’s going to take a miracle with prayer, meditation and word works of deeds. That is how things change,” she said.

There were several small miracles that happened along 79th Street where violence is usually the norm and a lot of hugs from Thomas and Pfleger of young Black men who in previous marches usually ran at the sight of Pfleger who only wanted to offer them an alternative to crime and jail.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (NNPA) – Last May, just before papers were filed with the North Carolina governor’s office petitioning for pardons of innocence, Connie Tindall was defiant.

The former high school football champion who had dreams of playing for the NFL one day felt that the state of North Carolina owed him for destroying that dream with its false prosecution and imprisonment of him as a member of the Wilmington Ten. “Don’t let it be too late for the rest,” Tindall said, noting that he was among the (Continued on page 3)

Collins and Illinois Lottery launch ticket to combat HIV/AIDS Original documentary on state of HIV/AIDS in Illinois screened at Gene Siskel Film Center, as part of launch As part of its mission to raise funds for worthy causes, including programs that provide HIV prevention, raise awareness and deliver support services to Illinoisans living with the disease, the Illinois Lottery is partnering with the Illinois Department of Public Health to launch a new Red Ribbon Cash lottery instant game expected to raise $1 million for the cause. As part of the game launch, a 15-minute documentary on the state of the disease in Illinois was screened this week at the Gene Siskel Film Center, before an audience of people committed to stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS. Red Ribbon Cash profits fund HIV/AIDS prevention education and grants to public and private organizations that serve the highest atrisk groups for contracting HIV or developing AIDS. Since 2008, this ticket, the only Lottery ticket of its kind nationally, has contributed over $4 million to the fight against HIV/AIDS. The legislature created four special games whose profits benefit specific causes: veterans programs, MS research, Breast Cancer research, and today with Red Ribbon Cash we launch a new instant game that awards $40,000 instant prizes and will create $1 million in funding for HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness groups.” said Lottery Superintendent, Michael Jones.

Illinois ranked 7th nationwide in the diagnosis of HIV infections, and 6th nationwide in the estimated number of AIDS cases in 2010, the most current year for which national data is available. By the end of 2011, more than 1,700 new cases of HIV and AIDS were estimated.

State Sen. Jacqueline Collins (D16th) sponsored legislation in 2007 creating the only lottery game of its kind in the nation. “The devastating effect this disease has had in our communities – particularly among poor and minority populations –

“As a legislator, I consider HIV/AIDS to be one of the most morally compelling issues of our time,” Collins said. She also sponsored legislation establishing the 2007 HIV/AIDS lottery program and this year led the effort to reauthorize the game. It is the only one of its kind in the nation.

Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck said. “During these tight budgetary times, your purchase of a Red Ribbon Cash lottery ticket will provide additional funding for treatment and prevention programs needed in many poor and minority communities.”

Collins added, “with every budget we see funding for human services – including the fight against AIDS – slashed, so it is essential to design and support innovative ways to keep the resources flowing to those on the front lines of this battle.” She added, “African Americans make up 14.5 percent of Illinois’ population but in 2009 constituted 53.4 percent of new AIDS diagnoses. We absolutely must get a handle on this disease, giving as many people as possible the knowledge to prevent its spread and the tools to live long and fulfilling lives even after learning they are HIV-positive.”

To commemorate the Red Ribbon Cash ticket, the Lottery’s advertising agency, “commonground,” which was recently named ‘Small Agency of the Year’ by Advertising Age, created the tickets, the lottery’s advertising campaign, and a 15-minute documentary, 4orty6ix, to recognize Illinoisans living with HIV/AIDS. The documentary offers viewers a look at the human side of HIV/AIDS, and highlights how a lottery game, Red Ribbon Cash, helps fund efforts to combat the disease.

Liquor store funds math and science scholarships

By Wendell Hutson It’s rare that you hear about a Chicago liquor store providing academic scholarships but one South Side liquor store is doing just that and plans to continue each year.

This was the first year Happy Liquors & Food at 7901 S. Cottage Grove Ave. funded two $500 academic scholarships. The scholarships went to Elijah Howard and Kayla Bilal at McDade Classical Elementary School, 8801 S. Indiana Ave. The scholarships are for one-year only and next year Happy Liquors hopes to expand the scholarships to a second neighborhood school and eventually to high school and college students.

“We want to do as much as we can for the communities we serve.

Happy Liquors has been a part of the Black community for over 30 years and we do not want to be known for just selling alcohol but for also being a community partner,” said Juan Alvarez, a manager at Happy Liquors & Food. “I am from the community so I know what challenges the community faces. And I want to encourage fellow liquor store owners in the area

to do the same and become a community partner.”

Alvarez, who lives in the 7th ward on the Southeast Side, which is represented by Alderman Sandi Jackson, got the idea about the scholarships when he reflected on his years in high school.

“Back then athletes got all the scholarships and that made me mad because I was not an athlete but a good student,” recalled Alvarez. “I think too many gifted students get overlooked when it comes to scholarships because the world is so focused on athletes. We need more (Black) leaders in science and math and that is why providing these scholarships is so important.”

He added that the corner of 79th Street and Cottage Grove Avenue is located in the 8th ward, which is represented by Alderman Michelle Harris. But there are four parts of the corner that are also part of the 6th ward, which are represented by Ald. Roderick Sawyer. Happy Liquors sits in one of those four bordering locations.

“Ald. Sawyer worked with us to identify a school we could sponsor for scholarships and he has been a big help in getting us more involved

And having security around the clock to protect customers is a big deal for Alvarez. In 1994 his dad was murdered leaving the Four-Star Food & Liquors at 8201 S. Exchange Ave. an establishment that did not have security at that time, according to Alvarez. in the community,” explained Alvarez. “Now if we can just get other nearby liquor stores to do the same, we can make the Grand Crossing community a better place to live.”

Sawyer said he supports what Happy Liquors is doing and is glad to see the store has made changes.

“They (Happy Liquors) have made a big improvements and I hope other liquor stores follow suit,” he told the Crusader.

The store was closed by the city last year from April to July for building code violations, according to city records. Protest marches by community activists, such as John Hannah, pastor of New Life Covenant Church on the South Side, caught the attention of Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

But on Friday, August 3, it became “too late” for Connie Tindall.

After having minor surgery for a blood clot several weeks ago, Tindall, who was recovering at home, reportedly suffered complications, and died. He was 62.

The news came as a shock to Tindall’s family, friends, and members of the Wilmington Ten Pardons of Innocence Project, which has been working to build national support for individual pardons of innocence to Tindall, and the other nine civil rights activists.

The Pardons Project is a special project of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA).

Led by Rev. Benjamin Chavis, the nine African-American men – ages 17 – 22 – and one white female, 34, were falsely convicted of conspiracy 40 years ago in the February 1971 firebombing of a whiteowned grocery store, amid heightened racial tensions about school desegregation in Wilmington, NC. The Wilmington Ten were sentenced to a total 282 years and served some of that time until Amnesty International; CBS’ “60 Minutes;” the US Justice Dept., and 55 members of Congress, all investigated, declaring the convictions were fraudulent.

All three of the state’s prosecution witnesses recanted their testimony, revealing that they had been paid to lie. And in December 1980, the U.S. Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously ruled to overturn all 10 convictions.

The state of North Carolina refused to follow the federal courts, and to this day, has not cleared the names of Connie Tindall, Anne Shepard, Jerry Jacobs, William Joe Wright – all of whom are deceased – James “Bun” McKoy. Marvin Patrick, Reginald Epps, Willie Earl Vereen, Wayne Moore and Benjamin Chavis.

The whole ordeal took its toll on Tindall and the rest of the survivors Their futures shattered, many found themselves rejected and ostracized by the very community they fought for.

In that interview with the Wilmington Journal last May, Tindall said he made it through the fourand-a-half years in prison he spent by knowing that one day he would be vindicated.

“It’s the scar that doesn’t show, but you’ve got to wear it,” Tindall said.

“But I don’t wear it with my head hung down. I wear it with my head held high, because everything [that happened] was meant to destroy me. But here I am…looking at you…laughing!”

Rev. William Barber, president of the North Carolina NAACP, and strong supporter of the Pardons of Innocence Project, paid tribute to Tindall, saying, “In Latin, the name ‘Connie’ means steadfast. As our brother not only lived out his name, but let us do likewise as we fight for truth and justice.”

Attorney Irving Joyner, a professor at North Carolina Central Univer-

sity School of Law, and co-chair of the Wilmington Ten Pardons of Innocence Project, said of Tindall: “He was always so strong and on point with everything. He was a joy to be around, and had a great sense of humor, even though he was passionate about the plight of the Wilmington Ten.” Chavis said “Long live the spirit and memory of Connie Tindall.

“God bless the Tindall family. Rest in Peace, Connie.”

(At press time, funeral arrangements were still being planned. One of the complications, however, is that Connie Tindall had no life insurance. EDITORIAL GET OUT AND VOTE FOR YOUR INTERESTS! U.S. President Barack Obama is in a vigorous fight to hold onto his job. Four years ago, he came in on a ship named Change, and four years later he is fighting a tide that is welling up against him because that “change” did not go in the direction that people, especially Black people, thought that it would.

The crux of the matter is that people have very short memories. When Barack ascended to office, the economy was in a shambles. The only entities that did not see tight times were the corporations that bankrolled wars. The warmongers made boatloads of cash due to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If some of the money that goes toward fighting wars were redirected to the domestic front, the economy would be in much better shape, but we know at this point that this won’t happen.

So we move to plan “B.” Plan “B” is that we should vote for our best interests. Yes, a lot of Black people are disgruntled because they thought that Barack would be like Santa Claus bringing jobs and other miraculous changes to American life in four short years.

Barack has done a lot to create jobs. He also kept the economy from completely tanking, and for this he does not get the credit that he is due.

On another note, Mitt Romney is a son of privilege. He has never had to suffer economic privation in his life, and some of the insensitive gaffes that he has made on the campaign trail support this notion. To believe that a Mitt Romney presidency would be better for Black and poor people than an Obama one would be the equivalent to believing in the Easter Bunny.

The woeful fact is that because of racism, a lot of whites, and possibly others, will vote against their own best interests in an effort to get Barack Obama out of the White House! Many of the people who don’t have healthcare or don’t have jobs, among other important economic issues, are not Black.

Most heartbreaking is that many Black people are turning their backs on him. A lot of this is due to having unrealistic expectations. Our society is being restructured so that everyone’s wages (the middle and lower classes) are mired in a depressed state. The time is gone when a person could raise a family without a high school diploma by getting a good factory job, or some other work that does not require higher education.

With the high school dropout rate in the Black community at an all-time high, the community is going in the opposite direction in regards to the economy. Unless people become more skilled, they will forever be stuck at the bottom. As for those who are in the educated middle classes, the deck is stacked against them as well. This is due, in part, to “globalism.” As long as corporations can get people in Haiti, India and Jamaica to work all day for a pittance, Americans, who have traditionally demanded higher wages, are not in a position to compete.

There is little that Obama can do about this situation.

But WE can do something about it. First, we must intelligently assess the issue and realize that Barack can’t make miraculous changes in his first term if he wants a second term. Secondly, it is up to US to make Congress accountable to the people who elected them. As long as Congress sits on its hands while globalist plutocrats run wild, there can be little real change. Black people must understand that we can get angry with family, but we must realize that Barack IS family. While he may not be everything that we want him to be, he is certainly better for us than Romney! We need to support Obama, and we need to come out in huge numbers on Election Day! A luta continua.

I know that this is reaching your desk some time after the article on Izola White was published, to be exact, it was in your July 21, 2012 edition, but I collect many papers and it takes me a little while to get to them all. However, I have to respond to this front page article because I was struck with great sadness to see that a woman who represents a very significant part of history of the southside of Chicago, to have arrived at a place of great despair. I was especially affected by how her legal guardian notes his regret that the community has not rallied behind her, and to a greater extent in my opinion, how elected officials haven't come to her aid.

Part of my childhood in the 70's was spent living on the 80th block of Blackstone where my memories are still rich with time spent on 79th Street from eating at White Castles on Stoney Island, to Sears Roebuck & Co. where our school clothes were bought each new school-year, to taking the bus westward with my mom to eat at Izola's Restaurant. At that time, 79th Street was a bustling mecca of clothing boutiques, hair salons, shoe stores, and a sporting goods store where my father would buy my brother's

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Southsider vows to help Izola, chides Black officials Dear Editor:

Converse Allstar gym shoes. My brother and I loved to go to Izola's because the cornbread was in the shape of a corn cob.

I hold on to these memories because the greater part of my childhood was spent on the other side of the country in California. Izola's restaurant gives me a childhood link to Chicago before I came back, got married and raised two children on the southside. After reading this article, I was mostly disturbed that Black officials who like to talk about how they benefit those who vote them into office, could abandon someone like Izola White in her greatest hour of need. The response I read to Izola's condition was from an elected official who has been in her current position for over 12 years, and controls an $100 million annual budget was, "[Izola] has meant a lot to me personally and wish there were more I would do for her." Do you mean that with all of the resources of Cook County, there is nothing that Dorothy Brown and the other elected officials in the Ward, the Congressional District, and the state representative district can do for Izola White, who is living, breathing Chicago Black history?

If so, then the Black community with all of its Black elected officials has failed its people.

I've contacted Mr. DeWayne Mason, Izola's legal guardian to inform him that I will be working on her behalf to help steer her away from the dreadful end of living in a nursing home, a condi-

tion she says will kill her. It makes me ashamed to know that our people lack the courage to stand up and fight for someone who rubbed elbows with, and fed for free, some of the greatest Black Americans to walk the planet.

A Significant Class Action Litigation Settlement

By Harry C. Alford NNPA Columnist As a voice for small businesses and their customers, The National Black Chamber of Commerce is pleased to see that after so many years, the very public battle over who should pay for the cost of payments acceptance is finally over.

On July 13th, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York announced that a settlement was reached in the long-running legal dispute between retailers, payment networks and nine major credit card issuers over interchange fees and rules.

The parties came together and agreed on a settlement, using a reasoned, measured judicial approach to resolving a complex dispute.

Congress designed the antitrust resolution system in the courts to resolve complex principles of law and questions of fact. It is designed to insulate the process from raw political power and to reach conclusions that ultimately benefit consumers.

Giant retailers now have more control than ever before in what they pay to accept electronic payments – including the ability to impose a retailer surcharge, or “checkout fee,” on their customers, which they required as part of the settle-

Harry C. Alford ment. This is an anti-consumer practice and people should watch for large retailers overcharging them – and just say no. It’s outrageous that customers should have to pay the retailer extra for the “privilege” of paying them. In fact, this practice is currently illegal in ten states and will continue to be due to state law.

These states include: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Oklahoma and Texas.

The thoughtful approach of the settlement process is in stark contrast to that of the Durbin amendment. I’ve said this before and I’ll

say it again, Congress never should have meddled in this fight between two giant industries – picking winners and losers with no forethought as to the fallout. Unlike the deliberate approach of the courts, Congress rushed through a draconian price control regime that gave giant retailers an $8 billion windfall, with no benefit to consumers. The Durbin amendment was poorly designed and shoehorned into DoddFrank without any thoughtful discussion. Ever since this unwarranted and misguided intervention into the debit interchange, the negative effects, intended and unintended, are being felt by millions of Americans.

Consumers have not received the savings giant retailers promised in exchange for the $8 billion big business payday from Senator Durbin and Congress. Contrary to visions of slashing prices and “discounts for debit” at the register, giant retailers are hoarding their winnings, and consumers are seeing prices continue to rise - and in many cases are paying more for traditional banking products and losing services that were free since many banks have been put in the position of making up lost revenue because of the Durbin amendment.

Moreover, big retailers have seen

their profits soar while small businesses are suffering higher and higher costs. Prior to government intervention, all retailers paid an average of around 1 percent per debit transaction. But today, “mom and pop” shops selling everyday items, like a cup of coffee or a turkey sandwich, are paying the much higher pricecontrolled amount – virtually the same amount as a mega-retailer is paying for a flat screen TV. And just recently, a couple of giant retailers have now publically objected to the settlement, including WalMart, and feel differently than the millions of merchants who were intimately involved in the extensive negotiations as part of this litigation. I suppose it’s possible that Wal-Mart doesn’t think the settlement is in their best interest and perhaps they want to try to hold out for more money. But we all know that what Wal-Mart wants isn’t always what is in the best interest of the millions of other U.S. merchants, and especially smaller retailers.

The class representative plaintiffs, their counsel and the court appointed co-lead class counsel had every opportunity to shape this deal over seven years of litigation and mediation. It appears to me that they ultimately signed on because they felt this was in the best interests of all re-

tailers, large and small alike.

As I see it, this settlement resolves all interchange disputes – both those in the past and on a go-forward basis. As with any settlement of class action litigation, it’s a process and several additional steps must occur before the agreement is actually implemented. This settlement is a final and binding agreement between all parties. Those who signed the final agreement are now compelled, through their signatures, to ask for the judge to approve it. And there is nothing to suggest that the judge would reject this agreement, which has been in development for many years. In fact, recent analyst reports by Keefe, Bruyette & Woods and Citi Research find that even if some of the class participants formally opt-out of the agreement, this is extremely unlikely to derail the interchange settlement.

Now that both industries have willingly endorsed this agreement, it shows that no further government intervention is necessary – the case is in fact closed.

Anti-Poverty Programs have been Successful

By George E. Curry NNPA Columnist Conservatives continue to assert that anti-poverty programs have failed when, in fact, they have saved millions of people from plunging into poverty.

Fox News, the house organ for right-wingers, has led this disinformation campaign. Let’s examine what two network contributors said on the same day (July 23, 2012): Mary Katherine in an appearance on “The O’Reilly Factor,” said: “Well, here’s the other thing.

Like you noted, Bill, that we’ve spent 17 trillion dollars on the war on poverty since it began, originally the plan was to be able to lift people out of poverty. It does not feel to people like we’re getting there, and [Obama’s] out there doing other things and making the pitch that that is what’s going to solve the problem. More spending. We’re on track to spend over a trillion dollars per year on welfare programs. We’ve spent 2 trillion, I believe, over the last two fiscal years. And people are looking at that and it’s not helping.”

Monica Crowley, appearing on “Your World with Neil Cavuto,” said: “Here’s the problem.

Since the mid-1960s when Lyndon Johnson launched the Great Society program, and started this massive spending spree…What we now know is that none of those social welfare programs, that we continue to pour all of this taxpayer money into, have worked. None of it has alleviated poverty. In fact the poverty srate has gotten worse instead of better.”

Media Matters, the media watchdog group, looked at a halfdozen reports that debunk the popular – though inaccurate – right-wing talking point.

“Amid reports of rising poverty, two Fox contributors claimed that anti-poverty programs have done nothing to alleviate poverty,” Media Matters stated. “In fact, federal government programs such as food stamps, Social Security, and other measures created or boosted by the stimulus bill have kept millions out of poverty and lowered the poverty rate.”

Poverty is defined by the federal government as a family of two parents and two children earning $22,113 annually or one parent and two children receiving $17,568 a year. According to the Census Bureau, 15.1 percent of Americans, or 46.2 million peo-

That’s the highest rate since 1993 but 7.3 percent lower than 1959 when figures were first kept.

According to the National Poverty Center at the University of Michigan, the poverty rate was 22.4 percent in the late 1950s, declined throughout the 1960s – when the Great Society antipoverty programs were created – and reached a low of 11.1 percent in 1973 before inching back up

to its current level of 15.1 percent.

The non-partisan Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) analyzed Census Bureau figures and found that without federal anti-poverty programs, the poverty rate would have doubled.

“Census data show that in 2012, poverty rates without government income assistance of any sort would have been nearly twice as high as they actually were: 28.6 percent rather than 15.5 percent,” the CBPP reported. “This shows the impact of public programs, including not only tax credits, unemployment insurance, and SNAP benefits [food stamps] but also Social Security, Supplemental Security Income, veterans’ benefits, public assistance (including Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) and housing assistance, among others, and the net effect of the tax system.”

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities also found that: • Social Security kept nearly 20 million Americans out of poverty; • Stimulus programs kept nearly 7 million Americans out of poverty; Saturday, August 11, 2012

• The Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit lifted more than 8 million people, including 5 million children, out of poverty in 2010; • Unemployment insurance benefits kept more than 3 million people out of poverty in 2010; • Food stamps kept 4 million people, including 2 million children, out of poverty in 2010 and • The Making Work Pay tax credit kept 1.5 million people out of poverty in 2010.

On April 9, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a study that showed because of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), otherwise known as food stamps, between 2000 and 2009 there was “an average decline of 4.4 percent in the prevalence of poverty due to SNAP benefits.”

In addition, the study found, SNAP’s antipoverty effect was strongest in 2009 when benefits were increased under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, also known as the stimulus package. That year, SNAP befits reduced the poverty rate by nearly 8 percent and child (Continued on page 16) 5

Dr. Conrad Worrill August is an important month in the worldwide African Liberation Movement. This is the month we pay tribute to the legacy of one of our greatest organizers and leaders who served the African World Community — the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Marcus Garvey was born August 17, 1887

in St. Ann’s Bay, Jamaica. The organization he founded, the Universal Negro Improvement Association in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1914, will again pay tribute this month to the great legacy of this giant in our struggle.

In this present era of economic and educational onslaught against the African Community in America, it is important that we understand that the rise of the African Centered Education Movement should be linked to our quest for economic independence.

We must free the “African mind” through African Centered Educational activities so that we might better understand the importance of economic self-reliance.

One model that we draw strength from in pursuing economic and educational liberation is the model established by the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the 1920s.

The more I read and study about Marcus Garvey, the more I am amazed at the great contributions he made to African people to become a self-reliant and self-sufficient people. At the core of Marcus Garvey’s program was his urging of African people to acquire education and economic power. As he always started, “A race without power is a race without respect.”

When we examine the economic condition of Africans in America, and throughout the world, we find one glaring problem— African people do not control our economic resources at the level we should.

This is primarily due to our miseducation as a people. In a disproportionate manner, African people depend on the European and Asian world for food, clothing, and shelter. More often than not, the European and Asian worlds are the producers, processors, distributors, and wholesalers. African people are the consumers.

This was one of the major problems that the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey addressed during his lifetime and that Minister Louis Farrakhan continues to address.

As Dr. Tony Martin writes in his book Race First, which is one of the best books written on the works of Marcus Garvey, “Marcus Garvey, unlike his major rivals in the United States, built a mass organization that went beyond civil-rights agitation and protest and based itself upon a definite, well thought out program that he believed would lead to the total emancipation of the race from white dominion.”

To implement his program, Garvey set up the Negro Factories Corporation (NFC). Its objective was to build and operate factories in the big industrial centers of the United

States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa. The NFC established a chain of cooperative grocery stores, a restaurant, a steam laundry, tailor and dressmaking shop, a millinery store, and a publishing house.

Mr. Garvey also established a steamship company, The Black Star Line. He envisioned a fleet of steamers carrying passengers and establishing trade among African people of the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and Africa.

In the summer of 1920, Garvey launched his full blown program at the First Annual Convention of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) of which he was the founder and first President General.

On August 2, 1920, after a massive parade of thousands of well drilled, uniformed ranks of the UNIA, 35,000 delegates from all over the United States and some twenty-five countries convened at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. It was, according to the New York Times, one of the largest gatherings in the history of the hall.

Dr. Martin explains that, “Central to the ideological basis underpinning Garvey’s program was the question of race. For Garvey, the Black man was universally op-

pressed on racial grounds, and no matter how much people try to shy away from this issue, the fact is, this is still true today.”

As Malcolm X used to say, it was our Blackness “which caused so much hell not our identity as Elks, Masons, Baptists or Methodists.” If we are ever to become a liberated people this idea must be deeply rooted in the day to day organizing and mobilizing of our people as we seek economic and educational liberation. Far too many Africans in America have abandoned this idea in their organizing projects.

Mr. Garvey understood that the foundation of our liberation was economic and educational independence based on racial solidarity.

There are numerous lessons we can learn from the legacy of the Honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey. Without economic independence tied to the acquisition of political power, African people in America and African people everywhere will continue to be the subjects of the whims of other people.

In this regard, Garvey said, “...you can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind. To see your enemy and know him is a part of the complete education of man...

Develop yours and you become as great and full of knowledge as the other fellow without entering the classrooms.”

VICTORIES AND STEREOTYPES

By Julianne Malveaux NNPA Columnist If you don’t follow Olympic gymnastics, you may not have heard about Gabrielle Douglas before this year. But the amazing grace of this 16- year old African American propelled her to Olympic gold last week, and she is the second African American to win an individual medal in gymnastics. Indeed, her performance toppled the Russians, who have portrayed themselves as unbeatable. So unbeatable, as a matter of fact that the winner of the silver medal, Viktoria Komova, “sobbed uncontrollably,” according to a news report, because she so expected to win.

This calls for unqualified celebration. Sneaking into some of the celebratory comments, though, were snarky and rude comments that many reserve to tarnish African American accomplishment and victory. Channel surfing in the talk radio space (why??), these comments came in two categories, equally objectionable.

First, there were comments about Gabrielle’s hair. As the young gymnast did her thing, there were many – including some self-hating African American women – who commented that her hair wasn’t up to par. Shades of the comments about Michelle Obama. I’m not sure what style would be appropri-

bilities that kept him from the rest of the games. His presence or absence should not be the fodder for speculation.

I wouldn’t mind the commentary so much if the same folks spent any time speaking of the economic plight of African American men.

The most recent jobs report shows that while the unemployment rate ticked up from 8.2 percent in May to 8.3 percent in June, the rate for African American men rose from 14.2 to 14.8 percent officially. Unofficial rates would put African American male employment near the 25 percent mark. Furthermore, alternative sets of data more effectively explore the plight of African American men. The employmentpopulation ratio, which measures the percentage of men aged 10 to 65 who are working, shows that 57.7 percent of African American men in that age group have jobs, which means that more than forty percent do not. More than two of three African American men, then, do not have work, yet this statistic is rarely discussed. In contrast, the

And when will we stop playing into other people’s stereotypes. To be honest, hair was the last thing on my mind when I saw Gabrielle’s stunning performance. Why was anyone thinking of hair?

In addition to thinking of hair, some commentators were thinking of fatherhood. Where was her dad, too many asked? One radio talk show host took a whole five minutes ruminating on absent dads.

But the truth is that while Gabrielle’s mom, Natalie Hawkins, and her dad, Timothy Douglas, are divorcing, Mr. Douglas, a soldier who has served both in Iraq and Afghanistan, is very much part of her life. He was present for the Olympic trials, but had responsi-

Why is his presence or absence at the Olympic games subject to meanspirited discussion, when it is clear that he supports his daughter?

It is easy to suggest that the Tea Party attacks on President Barack Obama have made it “open season” on Black people among the commemtariat. And certainly, coverage of the President and his family has been rife with stereotypes. Still, Tea Party attacks can’t explain the ways that some African American women have talked about Gab- rielle Douglas’ hair. In the face of caustic comments about Black people from outsiders, must we turn on ourselves?

Ima did jump up and down and I shouted loud and clear: YOU MADE US SO PROUD!! The other thing about little Gabby was she was the picture of confidence. She wasn’t shaken at all by all of the nerves that obviously took some of her teammates out of the running. She said she knew she was going to be victorious when she made the All-Round competition ‘cause she had been in the word. Blacks More Likely to use Payday Loans

By Charlene Crowell NNPA Columnist Most payday borrowers use the small-dollar loans to cover ordinary living expenses instead of occasional or unexpected emergencies, according to a new research report by Pew Charitable Trusts.

Who Borrows, Where They Borrow and Why, the first in a series of payday lending reports by Pew, also found that 81 percent of those who have used a storefront payday loan would cut back on expenses if the high-cost loans were not available.

Payday alternatives preferred by consumers included credit unions (44 percent), credit cards (37 percent) or an employer loan (17 percent). Among first-time borrowers, 69 percent used a payday loan for recurring expenses such as utilities, credit cards, housing or food.

Although most payday borrowers are white, female and ages 2544, African-Americans and four other groups are the most frequent payday borrowers: renters, consumers earning less than

$40,000 annually and those who are either separated or divorced.

Additional Pew findings showed: • Twelve million Americans used a storefront or online payday loan in 2010, the most recent year for which substantial data is available; • The average borrower is indebted about five months of the year; and • On average, a borrower takes out eight loans and spends $520 on interest.

“In states that restrict storefront lending, 95 percent of would-be borrowers have elected not to use payday loans at all. Just 5 percent went online or elsewhere,” said Nick Bourke, project director for Pew’s Safe Small Dollar Loan Research Project.

Earlier payday research by the Center for Responsible Lending found that communities of color are frequently areas where payday stores are clustered. Further, states with the highest number of payday stores per 10,000 residents also had significant African-American populations. Those states are: Alabama, Louisiana, Missis-

Charlene Crowell sippi, Missouri, Nevada, South Carolina and Tennessee.

A 2011 report by the Center for Responsible Lending found that payday loan customers remain indebted double the time that the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation recommends. Payday Loans, Inc.: Short on Credit, Long on Debt verified how the

typical two-week small-dollar loan becomes a deepening pit of debt lasting on average 212 days in the first year of borrowing and growing to 372 days in the succeeding year.

Yet according to FDIC guidance, no payday borrower should be indebted for more than 90 days in any 12 month period.

According to CRL, much of the problem with fully retiring payday debt is because of the industry requirement that borrowers pay the entire loan within the next paycheck. For most borrowers, this specific loan term denies them the ability to financially manage the rest of their lives.

In response to these and other payday findings, Rev. DeForest Soaries, Jr., author of dfree: Breaking Free from Financial Slavery, said, “Reputable businesses build their loyal clientele by offering value-priced products and services. Customers choose to return to these businesses. But payday lenders build their repeat business by trapping borrowers into a cycle of crippling debt with triple digit interest rates and fees.”

Soaries recently launched a Web-based community, www.billiondollarpaydown.com, where participants will learn how to set debt reduction goals and get ahead financially. The campaign goal is to assist 150,000 individuals and 1,000 organizations to pay down $1 billion of consumer debt by registering at least 150,000 consumers and 1,000 organizations.

The curriculum includes a workbook, trainers’ guide, activities and evaluation tools to help participants become financially self-sufficient. As a financial safeguard, the Challenge Web site does not ask for any account information, nor does it accept payments on its site.

Worries about ‘Upward Mobility’

According to a CBS News/New York Times poll, a majority of registered voters believe that Mitt Romney’s policies favor the rich. Fifty-three percent say Romney’s policies favor the wealthy.

Eleven percent says his policies favor the middle class, while 2 percent say they favor the poor.

Thirty percent say Romney’s policies treat all groups equally.

Of the social segments that favor President Barack Obama’s policies, 21 percent say his policies favor the rich, while 22 percent say they favor the middle class and 24 percent say they favor the poor. Twenty-five percent say

The wealthiest Americans live in gated communities that protect them from the masses. A new poll reveals that many Americans are questioning their prospects for “upward mobility.” The high level of pessimism is reflected among respondents in a recent poll conducted by The Hill newspaper that found half [47 percent] of likely voters believe it’s impossible for them to become wealthy during the course of their lifetime. The survey, conducted as the heated political presidential campaign becomes more acrimonious over the interests of the haves and the have-nots, found that fewer than 2 in 5 likely voters [37 percent] think they can ever become rich.

This presidential election will have more to do with the economy and voters personal well-being than ever before. The Hill newspaper’s survey findings suggest pessimism about the possibility of upward mobility as economic growth remains weak and jobs scarce. The national debate over wealth is intensifying as it creates economic divisions across the country’s population segments. Although the economy will improve a bit in the second

half of 2012, it will be another disappointing year of slow growth capping the worst three years of economic growth, outside of a recession. Between 2005 and 2010 the median net worth of Americans under 35 fell 37 percent, and the wealth gap between the young and the old in America is wider than it’s ever been. The percentage of the workforce under age 25 has dropped 13.2 percent since 2008, and the U.S. unemployment rate is 12 percent for those age 18 to 29 because this age group’s parents aren’t retiring.

The wealth – more specifically, the median net worth – of households in the United States is varied in relation to race, education, geographic location and gender.

Wealth in the U.S. is unevenly distributed, with the wealthiest 25 percent of U.S. households owning 87 percent of the total wealth. The median wealth of white households is 20 times that of Black households. And, Blacks vote more on emotion than economic well-being. For Black Americans the annual median household income in 2010 was $29,328. It was $35,856 among all races. While Blacks make 62 cents of every dollar of income that whites make, they only have 10 cents for every dollar of wealth that whites have.

In The Hill poll almost 40 percent of people said that the threshold to being wealthy was a $500,000 annual income. Twenty percent put the bar above $1 million. Thirty-one percent of people said a family earning $250,000 a year is wealthy. And, 9 percent said $100,000 was the threshold.

Each day, America is comprised more and more of economic haves and have-nots. Since the 2007 recession, the share of total wealth owned by the nation’s wealthiest one percent grew to

Are Black voters in a totally different place than the mainstream of Americans? The Hill poll’s respondents’ views differed based on income levels, with voters earning between $40,000 and $75,000 strongly preferring Romney over Obama. Among people earning between $40,000 and $60,000, 48 percent trust Romney more compared to 39 percent for Obama. People earning between $60,000 and $75,000 trust Romney more than Obama by a 34-point margin, 61 percent to 27 percent.

Urban Partnership Bank acquires Chicago South Side office from Northern Trust

URBAN PARTNERSHIP BANK’S acquisition of Northern Trust’s full-service branch at 7801 S. CPS marks end of Safe Summer, Safe Haven Program Recently Chicago Public Schools (CPS) CEO Jean-Claude Brizard continued his commitment to engage students and families in CPS’s efforts to get students in the classroom on the first day of school by joining faith, community and corporate leaders to celebrate the end of the Safe Summer, Safe Haven program and to promote the advent of the upcoming school year at the end of summer back to school rally at Columbus Park, 5701 W. Jackson.

Through the program, a partnership between CPS and the faith community, students were engaged in creative and performing arts, as well as provided with learning opportunities and mentoring – all in a safe and supervised environment. The program served more than 2,300 children ages 5-17 for the past six weeks at about 60 faith institutions

throughout Chicago.

CEO Brizard praised the Safe Haven, Safe Summer program for providing a bridge between the end of the last school year and the beginning of the upcoming school year. He reminded the children of the importance of continuing their hard work and dedication by showing up in class on the first day of school: Monday, August 13 for Early Start Schools (Track E) and Tuesday, September 4 for Regular Start Schools (Track R).

“Instruction begins on the first day of school and we need every student in class from day one so that they do not fall behind,” said CPS CEO Jean-Claude Brizard.

State education and health agencies issue reminder back-to-school immunizations August marks National Immunization Awareness Month As more than 2 million Illinois students prepare to head back to school, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) encourage parents and guardians to ensure their children’s immunizations are up to date. New IDPH rules require students entering sixth and ninth grades this school year show proof of receiving the Tdap vaccine, a booster shot for continued protection against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis, commonly referred to as whooping cough.

“Let’s start the school year off right and keep our children healthy

and ready to learn in their classrooms,” said State Superintendent of Education Christopher A. Koch.

“Immunizations are easy and protect everyone from diseases that can have serious complications.”

The State of Illinois requires vaccinations to protect children from a variety of diseases before they can enter school. Required up-to-date immunizations for a child entering any grade include diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, poliomyelitis, measles, rubella and mumps.

Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (Hib) is required only for children entering preschool programming.

Hepatitis B is also required for children entering preschool programming, but is not required for children in kindergarten through fourth grades. Hepatitis B is, how-

ever, required for students entering fifth grade and above. Varicella (chicken pox) is required for students entering preschool programming through 10th grade.

IDPH cites recent outbreaks of whooping cough, or pertussis, in Illinois as it stresses the need for protection and adherence to its new rules.

“This new requirement for sixthand ninth-graders comes at a time when we are seeing a substantial increase in pertussis cases here in Illinois and across the country,” said IDPH Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck. “This newly required Tdap booster will help protect students and those around them, including infants, who are too young to be fully immunized.”

In addition to immunizations, all students enrolling in kindergarten in a public or private school and any student enrolling for the first time in Illinois (with the exception of preschoolers) must have an eye examination. The eye exam needs to be performed by a licensed optometrist or medical doctor who performs eye exams and is licensed by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. All eye exams must be completed within one year prior to Oct. 15.

Furthermore, all students enrolled in kindergarten and the second and sixth grades are required to have a dental examination.

Also, all children must complete a physical examination prior to entering Illinois schools for the first time, prior to the date of entering kindergarten or first grade, prior to entering sixth grade, and prior to entering ninth grade. The exam includes gender and date of birth; an evaluation of height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, skin, eyes, ears, nose, throat, mouth/dental; cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genito-urinary, neurological, and musculoskeletal evaluations; spinal examination; evaluation of nutritional status; lead screening; and other evaluations deemed necessary by the health-care provider.

Screen actor Isaiah Washington co-stars in Richard Pryor stage play Chicago premiere of Unspeakable runs for 8 weeks at Royal George Theatre This fall, Chicagoans will get the chance to experience the New York International Fringe Festival hit production, Unspeakable, a dramatic fantasia inspired by the life of comedic icon Richard Pryor, on the Royal George Theatre Main Stage, 1641 N. Halsted, in a limited eight-week engagement beginning Tuesday, October 2, 2012. The official opening night performance is Monday, October 8, at 7:30 p.m.

Winner of two NAACP Image Awards and a Screen Actors Guild Award, Washington most recently appeared in Jeymes Samuel’s They Die By Dawn, starring Michael Kenneth Williams, Harry Lennix, Erykah Badu, Jesse Williams, and Rosario Dawson; and he will produce and star in the upcoming films The Undershepherd and Blue Caprice in theaters this fall and summer 2013, respectively.

Chicago Post Office to dedicate Miles Davis Stamp August 15 Local musicians pay tribute to jazz legend’s legacy For more than 40 years, Miles Davis left his unmistakable mark on jazz – with small groups and large orchestras, popular standards and original works, acoustic and electric bands. Now his music and style are making their marks on a postage stamp.

The Chicago Post Office will hold a local dedication for the Miles Davis stamp Wednesday, August 15, at the DuSable Museum of African American History, 740 East 56th Place, at 5:30 p.m., as part of a concert in tribute to the late trumpeter. The event is part of DuSable’s, “The Sounds of History” summer jazz concert series.

Performing Davis’ music will be the Robert Irving III Group, featuring Irving on keyboards, Philippe Vieux on alto sax/flute, Junius Paul on bass, and Charles Heath Jr. on drums. Irving enjoyed a nine-year working relationship with Davis as the trumpeter’s longest collaborator (1979-88). During this time, Irving produced Davis’ pivotal recording Decoy, which won a Downbeat Award for Best Jazz Group Album, You’re Under Arrest (including the Grammynominated single, “Human Nature”), and the score for the film Street Smart.

“As evidence by this beautiful

postage stamp, Miles remains a jazz and cultural icon, “ says Irving, ”so I’m grateful that he was a surrogate father, mentor, friend and teacher to me who gifted profound lessons on a daily basis... lessons such as ‘silence is as much a part of the music as sound... so play only what you really mean.’”

Irving and his band will be joined by two of Chicago’s leading trumpeters: Orbert Davis, playing a set of Davis’ pre-1969 repertoire; and Corey Wilkes, playing a set of Davis’ post-1969 work.

The Miles Davis stamp was issued in June, jointly with a stamp honoring legendary chanteuse Edith Piaf, in conjunction with La Poste, the French postal service. This was the first time the United States and France jointly issued a stamp since 1989, when both countries honored the bicentennial of the French Revolution.

The Miles Davis and Edith Piaf stamps also feature another historic first. For the first time, a QR code is printed on the back of the stamps. The code can be scanned with a smart phone. A landing page opens with an option to listen to music from Davis while viewing photographs and a timeline of the lives of both Davis and Piaf. Dr. Bell was exemplary in his approach – setting up a chair outside the entrance of his closed clinic and waited for patients who were scheduled for an appoint, but because of their mental conditions were probably unaware the clinic had been closed.

During these extremely tough economic times in our community, it borders on inhumane to cut

mental health services. Most of the patients have no real idea what is going on in the world, thereby creating a possible danger to themselves and others.

Mental health is a delicate issue in our community because too often Black and Hispanic men especially are reluctant to get help, and when they do, their conditions are extreme. In those instances it takes more time, medication and counseling to get patients stabilized. Too often in our community families don’t understand mental illness and will turn their backs on the sick person. And in some other cases family members will refuse to institutionalize a member, but eventually can’t properly care for her/him.

We can go through the line items on the state budget and surely find enough money being squandered that could cover the costs of keeping our mental health facilities open. Unfortunately mental health patients are

voiceless. Yes, they have some advocates who generally can get in front of powerful and not-sopowerful legislators, but can’t convince them the majority of times to agree with them.

There is no doubt that preserving mental health and getting mental health services get short shrift here and in many other states. It’s time we take hard looks at who is running for office and get their positions regarding mental health on the record. If they’re elected and stray from their original position then we must vote them out of office.

Governor Quinn’s action on the mental health issue certainly puts him in the category to be voted out. I hope millions of others agree with me, and Pat Quinn will be history after the next election. And the new governor can make Dr. Bell the head of the state’s mental health department.

We are at a 10 percent overall decrease in crime throughout the entire district.” He attributed this reduction to “a lot of hard work, partnerships with the community you are seeing here tonight.” Carter said there is not one factor that is causing the violence in the Auburn-Gresham community.

Wearing a T-shirt that said, “I am a Peacemaker,” Pfleger marched into the turfs of three factions of one gang—factions that are responsible for the shootings, some of which have been fatal and in each area he challenged the youth to a basketball match—peace for at least one day.

“We are calling it a day of truce,” said Pfleger. He’s bringing two of the three warring gangs together picking up each faction in a bus and bringing them to Saint Sabina’s ARK for a basketball match.

Pfleger told them, “imagine the day where everybody plays ball together to keep peace.” Saying he had spoken to all three factions, Pfleger said, “It’s not about who shot who. It’s the best ball player that day.”

“You think we can do it?

Are you on?” Pfleger asked, “Will you commit to it?”

The youth said ‘yes.’ “OK. You’re on. I believe we all can stop this,” Pfleger told several young men promising to get a date for the tournament. “I promise you. By the time you leave here, the safety is on me. I promise you. We’ll get the

three of you and play ball,” said Pfleger. Thomas vowed to return for this super game.

Thomas asked, “What ever happened to the beat down?” referring to the days when youth fought with their fists. Pfleger added, “The gun manufacturers are making a whole lot of money and none of their kids are getting shot.”

Talking to the youth, Thomas said, “This is genocide. “You have to stop the killing.” “The revolution is always with the young, not the old but first thing you have to do is to stop killing each other.”

Looking at Thomas, Pfleger said, “It will be a day of peace in the name of basketball, and I believe this man here can make it happen.

He’s going to come back, and we’re going to reach out to some other ball players.

We will have one day where the gangs will come together and have a basketball tournament at Saint Sabina,” Pfleger said.

Mr. Boseley said he would get trophies for the winners of this historic one-day peace basketball tournament. Pfleger said he would put up cash for the team that wins. Thomas shook hands with the youth telling them to “Stay alive” and “you’ve got a shot. You can make a difference.”

Pfleger and Thomas went into several businesses including a barbershop where Thomas pretended to cut Venus McCree’s hair. He posed for several pictures with customers.

Thanking the crowd for their support, Thomas said, “You never know who

De La Salle to host annual Blue-Gold game De La Salle Institute will host the 2012 Blue-Gold Game on Friday, August 17, 2012 at 6 p.m. at Bulger Field located at 3434 S. Michigan Ave. in Chicago.

Everyone is invited to join De La Salle for the kickoff of the 2012 football season as the Meteor freshman, sophomore and varsity teams will scrimmage. The freshman and sophomore teams will scrimmage at 6 p.m. with the varsity scrimmage at 7 p.m.

Admission is $15 for adults over 21 who wish to visit the beverage tent, $10 for adults who do not wish to visit the beverage tent, $5 for students, and kids under 13 are free. The admission price includes one meal ticket. Raffle tickets also will be sold benefiting

over the city participated in group drills, competitions, and scrimmages, and received guidance on the importance of education, staying focused, being physically active, and working as a team. Basketball classic leads Sixth Ward back-to-school drive especially interested in getting more girls in the classic.

A basketball classic, named after the late Chicago prep star Ben Wilson kicks off the back to school season August 13 at Cole Park, 85th and King Drive.

The Ben Wilson Cole Park Classic is for boys and girls ages five to 18 years old, Sixth Ward Alderman Roderick Sawyer said.

The Chicago Park District sponsors the classic.
