Boykin aims to create gun violence czar Commissioner says position would help stop shootings in Chicago and Cook County By Glenn Reedus First District Cook County Commissioner Richard Boykin wants to model the Feds and establish a czar to address the issue of gun violence in and around Chicago. Serving his first term, Boykin recently offered the idea during a news conference in front of the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office on West Harrison Street. “The federal government has had a drug czar. They even had an Ebola czar, and I think that with the amount of violence— particularly gun violence—it is time we (Cook County) had a gun violence czar.” He introduced an ordinance at the Board of Commissioners meeting on July 22 and stated that he hoped Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle would act on it with the same expediency she did in pushing a county sales tax two weeks ago. The dictionary defines a czar as “any person exercising great authority or power in a particular field.” “While we need to address the root causes of gun violence; lack of economic opportunity; lack of resources for families in distress; and other systemic challenges that are target(Continued on page 3)

Coyden Palmer A South Holland police officer is under investigation after a video surfaced of him verbally abusing a young Black man during a routine traffic stop. The video shows the officer threatening to break the car window of Rodney Wilson and pull him out of the car by force. The

video was recorded by Wilson. This incident comes on the heels of the Sandra Bland case in Texas, where the Chicago area native was found dead in her jail cell three days after an altercation with a Texas Highway patrolman when she was pulled over for a lane violation. South Holland Police Chief Greg Baker said he was “disappointed and concerned” by what he saw in the video when he addressed the media July 28 at the village’s headquarters. The officer, whose name has not been released, has been placed on administrative duties and an investigation has been launched into the incident.
