Revoking A Power of Attorney A power of attorney (known as a POA) is a legal document that gives someone else (known as the agent or attorney in fact) the authority to act on your behalf regarding financial or legal matters. The authority granted in the POA can be very broad in scope or limited in scope.

If you have a POA there may come a time you may want to change who serves as your agent. For example, you named your nephew as your agent. Your nephew has become very involved with his young family and does not have the time to assist you with your financial or legal matters. You want to name someone else to act as your agent. How do you effectively revoke the current POA naming your nephew?

It is important to keep in mind that signing a new power of attorney does not automatically revoke a prior POA unless the new POA specifically revokes the prior one. The new POA must contain specific language revoking the prior POA. Certified Elder Law Attorney, Annemarie Schreiber answered questions and offered informaton on the Caregivers First TV show, hosted by Lynette Whiteman, Executive Director of Caregiver Volunteers Of Central Jersey. Considering Retirement I believe in America because we have great dreams, and because we have the opportunity to make those dreams come true. – Wendell L. Willkie According to Pew Research, there was a big increase in baby boomer retirements in 2020 - 1.2 million over the historical average to be precise! Although there are no reasons cited for the increase, it’s likely that many of those who had been holding off decided to go ahead with retirement when the work dynamics they enjoyed and were staying on for suddenly shifted as a result of the pandemic.

Moving from dreaming about to considering retirement is a big step and it’s not just about being financially ready either. Retirees have a lot more free time on their hands; accordingly, even though retirements were increasing last year, the traditional activity of retirement traveling had been restricted so filling up that time became even harder for new retirees.

Given that it was such a big year for retirement, one might expect to see a large decline in the historical average. Those that took early retirement can’t take it again, after all. However, a recent Bloomberg article —Affluent Americans Rush Into Retirement in New Life is Short Mindset—suggests otherwise. New work dynamics may have driven some out of the market last year, but for some that stayed, the new work dynamics were preferred. Reopening and shifting back to the previous work patterns may end up driving still more toward retirement.

Today’s housing market presents another conundrum for those on the cusp of retirement. Many people will choose to sell a principal residence at retirement, taking the tax-free capital gain and downsizing to more appropriate quarters. The good news is that housing prices have been booming around the country, so many will have even more equity than expected. The bad news is that prices for retirement living arrangements are going higher as well.

If you’re one of the millions facing the decision of whether or not to retire this year, you need to understand whether you’re financially secure enough to support the retirement you are aiming for. These five steps may seem overly basic, but they create a baseline and framework that helps one switch from an accumulation mindset into a distribution mindset: Identify all the predictable income streams that you expect to have: Social Security, traditional pension, lifetime annuities, rent from real estate, and portfolio income.

Compile an inventory of all financial and real assets such as: stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit, IRAs, 401(k) accounts and real property.

Estimate your monthly and annual expenses in retirement: Divide the expenses into the essentials—food, clothing, housing, transportation, insurance and taxes—and the discretionary—travel, entertainment, gifts and so on.

Compare income to essential expenses: This will reveal whether there will be an income gap that will have to be filled by touching principal. If you need to take out principal, it may affect the income stream that comes along with it, so caution is needed.

Monitor the plan annually: Each year you should review your plan with your financial professional, making adjustments as needed, as your retirement circumstances change.

Once you know if you’re ready to retire, then it will be time to evaluate further retirement investment decisions making sure you are keeping up with inflation to retain your purchasing power, but staying within your risk profile by making sure that your asset allocation will be aligned with your time horizon, your income needs and your liquidity needs. Decisions about required minimum distribution of retirement accounts and rolling over one account into another will become relevant.

Even if you find out you’re financially secure enough to retire, that doesn’t mean it’s the right choice. It will mean that you can rest easy about doing so if it turns out you need to.

Summer Safety Tips for Seniors Deborah Walsh,

Summertime is a time for fun and relaxation, but for seniors, the heat and sun can be dangerous unless proper precautions are taken. Here are some tips that can be used to make sure summer is safe and fun.

• Stay hydrated – Seniors are more susceptible to dehydration than younger people because they lose their ability to conserve water as they age.

They also can become less aware of their thirst and have difficulty adjusting to temperature changes.

Remember to drink water often and be sure to pack some for those long summer drives.

• Talk to your doctor – Check with your medical team to make sure that any medications you are taking won’t be affected by higher temperatures.

Some medications are less effective if stored at temperatures higher than room temperature (approximately 78 degrees).

• Keep Cool – Even small increases in temperature can shorten the life expectancy for seniors who are coping with chronic medical conditions.

Shopping malls, movie theaters and libraries provide welcome, cool spaces if a senior’s own home isn’t air conditioned. They also provide a great opportunity to get out of the house and get some exercise, without the exhaustion of the heat.

• Stay in touch – High temperatures can be life threatening, so communication plays an important role in ensuring the safety of the elderly. For seniors you should let friends and family know if you’ll be spending an extended period of time outdoors, even if you are only gardening. Caregivers should check on the health and welfare of their loved ones at least twice a day.

• Wear the right stuff – Dress for the weather. Natural fabrics (such as cotton) are cooler than synthetic fibers. Wear light-colored and loose fitting cloths to help feel cooler and more comfortable.

• Rub on sunscreen and wear a hat – Caregivers, family and friends can help by gently reminding love ones about applying sunscreen and wearing a hat.

• Know the early sign of hyperthermia - Be particularly cautious about abnormally high body temperatures – a condition known as hyperthermia. Heat stroke is an advanced form of hyperthermia that can be life-threatening. Make sure to know the warning signs and get medical attention immediately if you or anyone you know experiences these symptoms.

• Body temperature greater than 104 • A change in behavior, such as acting confused, agitated or grouchy • Dry, flushed skin • Nausea and vomiting • Headache • Heavy breathing or a rapid pulse • Not sweating, even if it’s hot out • Fainting If you follow these tips, there’s no reason you can’t have an enjoyable and fun-filled summer!

Reciprocal IVF In today’s world, fertility treatments have evolved to include both heterosexual and same-sex partner therapy.

Compared to traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF), where the female patient undergoes ovarian stimulation with injectable medications, followed by use of partner or donor sperm and subsequent transfer of embryos into the same patient, reciprocal IVF is a term commonly used for treatment in female-female couples. Through this approach, one patient serves as the egg donor and the other female serves as the recipient (has an embryo transfer using a partner’s eggs). In this manner, both individuals take part in the treatment process, which results in inclusivity and a truly cooperative treatment approach.

Also known as co-IVF, this treatment methodology is often requested by couples where one patient does not have a desire to be pregnant, but still wants to be involved in the IVF process. This allows the patient to be an egg donor, while not having the same individual carry the pregnancy. The reasons for selecting reciprocal IVF are numerous and can be both medically indicated and/ or voluntary.

Medical reasons include increased age (resulting in lower egg quality and overall lower chance of success), decreased ovarian reserve due to medical procedures, prior surgery, or prior cancer treatments that decrease ovarian function, among others. Elective reciprocal IVF is when one partner voluntarily chooses not to become pregnant but wants to be genetically involved in the process of embryo creation.

Reciprocal IVF is part of what is termed thirdparty reproduction. Third-party reproduction is when the sexually intimate partners (including male-female, male-male, and female-female) use either sperm or eggs from a “donor” as a means to conceive. In recent years these treatment modalities have expanded the ability of couples to conceive and are now a common mainstay of fertility treatments.

For couples interested in reciprocal IVF, they should establish care and undergo fertility testing at an IVF center. Once the results of testing become available, their fertility doctor can recommend the best approach (who may be better served as the egg donor and who will undergo the embryo transfer).

In many cases, couples may choose to select a sperm donor with an excess of specimen at the sperm bank.

This provides an opportunity to have children in the future that are genetically related, using the same sperm donor. In other situations where the female partners are willing and their testing shows good overall fertility health, they may switch roles with further care, where one patient is then the donor and the other is now the recipient. In this case, the children share a sperm donor and are genetically related even though the egg source is different between siblings.

Torticollis: What Is It and How Do You Treat It?

What is torticollis?

Torticollis, also known as wry neck, means “twisted neck.” It is most often caused by the tightening of the muscle that connects the breastbone and the collarbone to the skull. This muscle is called the sternocleidomastoid or SCM, which is the common abbreviation. The SCM assists in rotation and side bending of the neck.

Who does it affect and why?

Torticollis most commonly affects infants.

When a baby is born with the condition, it is called congenital muscular torticollis. It can also occur after birth and sometimes later on in life, which is called acquired muscular torticollis. Congenital torticollis most likely happens in utero and can be caused by the way your baby is positioned in the womb, with his/ her head tilted to one side. It can also be due to injury of the muscle during delivery. Although it can look painful, it usually is not. Acquired muscular torticollis in an infant can be caused by positioning. If the baby tends to sleep with his/her head towards one side or is positioned to one side during feeding, the SCM can tighten. It can also be caused by an injury to the head or neck, which can cause the muscle to spasm.

In much less common cases, the condition can be caused by abnormalities of the cervical vertebrae (bones in the neck). The bones in the neck can either be abnormally formed, fused together, or both. The Kitchen Queens Of Cape May

As we embark on the summer season at the Jersey shore vacationers are flooding the shore towns for a week, or longer, to embrace a well needed vacation.

When it came time to start planning family vacations of my own, my husband and I landed in Cape May with our then, four year old twins. We rented on Kearney Street in a beautiful historical house for a number of years.

Our family walked from Kearney into town every night to walk the mall, get ice cream or just to soak in a summer night on the town. Our route from Kearney Street to the Washington commons included walking past the Chalfonte Hotel. It is a big beautiful historical structure that is nestled in a residential area a few blocks from the beach. The Chalfonte has an incredible history not only about it’s exterior but its interior that has made it into its success since the early 1900s.

Helen Dickerson was the start of what would be five generations of the “Dickersons” to dedicate a life to working at the Chalfonte. Helen was 8 years old when she first arrived at the Chalfonte with her mother, Clementine Young and the then owners. The original owners would travel from Virginia to Cape May every year to open the hotel and they would bring their staff along with them. Helen started off picking flowers with the owner’s wife for table centerpieces. She also became the owner’s baby sitter making a mere $3.00 per week. Ms. Helen worked her way up through the ranks as a waitress. Then, one fine day Helen was asked to fill the shoes of interim chef for the restaurant. This was no easy task, but Ms. Helen was up to the challenge and began preparing two seatings per day for over 180 guests per sitting. Helen not only held on to that role for over 77 years she brought her daughters, Dot and Lucille to work at the hotel. At the young ages of 7 and 9. Dot and Lucille started their employment at the hotel rinsing out the sand of the guests bathing suits and hanging them on door knobs so they would be ready for the next day at the beach. To add a bit of history to the time era, the Dickerson women were well respected as “staff” of the hotel, however they endured prejudice as women of color along the way. It has been reported that “blacks were not permitted to stay as guests” in the hotel but could be employed. It was not until the ownership changed hands to two incredible women in the 1980s that permitted all guests regardless of race. Lucille and Dot have reported in interviews that in the 1950s the beaches were also segregated. The beach on Grant street was the only beach designated as the “colored” beach which is where they were permitted to swim in the ocean. Ironically, Grant street has become the beach I frequent and my family favorite.

Dot and Lucille worked their way from the front of the house to the back of the house and right into the kitchen eventually learning how to prepare the famous recipes for breakfast and dinner.

Helen Dickerson was renown for her “southern specialties” and was known to have described her style as “soul food with its Sunday clothes on.” Those specialties are still known to be a part of the menu at the Chalfonte and include mouth watering Southern style fried chicken and crab croquettes. The traditional menu provided a week of daily specials that ended the week with seafood options. The recipes received so much publicity that Ms. Helen was invited to a 1984 appearance on the Phil Donahue show. In case you are a younger reader, to be a guest on the Phil Donahue show was equivalent to being interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. Ms. Helen was also were featured on the Food Network “Tyler’s Ultimate.” If that is not enough there is a cookbook entitled, “I Just Quit Stirring When the Tasting is Good” with all of the family’s generations of secrets printed on page after page. years old. To give you an idea of its size, each skillet can hold up to 40 pieces of “quartered” chicken.” Just imaging frying 80 pieces of chicken in the summer heat with no air conditioning over hot cooking oil makes me start to sweat.

Helen worked in the hotel into her 80s and along the way she taught her daughters Dot and Lucille how to prepare each meal from scratch, meaning all fresh and prepared daily and everything from the vegetable to the meats to the mayonnaise! Keep in mind there were no microwaves, no food processors, no electric can openers.

Through the years Dot and Lucille added their own recipes to enhance the menu. However, these titles did not come with ease.

The Ladies would arrive by 6am and not leave until after 6pm every day during the open season of the hotel which was from Memorial Day to Columbus day. They had one pleasure which was to watch the soap opera, General Hospital on a television placed in the kitchen by Ms. Helen, which was only one of the two televisions that were in the hotel. They raised their families in the kitchen of this grand hotel and Dot’s daughter Tina Burton has also become a regular serving up the culinary traditions. Other family members raised at the Chalfonte have continued on in the food industry as well. It has been reported that Dot passed away in February Dot Burton pictured above of 2015 at the age of 87. Lucille had a beautiful smile and was glowing with decades of pride that her family has contributed to not just the Chalfonte but the town of Cape May. About Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease Written by: Kenneth Glazier, MD Gastroenterologists of Ocean County Most of us at one time or another has suffered from heartburn. We have all seen the ads for the numerous acid suppressing medicines. The question is when to take notice of these symptoms and to seek the advice of a doctor.

What is GERD? Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a condition related to stomach acid backing up into the esophagus. The esophagus is the food tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. At the bottom of the esophagus is a muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The job of the LES is to squeeze the bottom of the esophagus tight to prevent the stomach acid from splashing up and burning the esophagus. It is supposed to stay closed at all times except when we swallow, belch or vomit. The LES can inappropriately relax causing acid to enter the esophagus.

When stomach acid enters the esophagus it can damage the lining of the esophagus and cause symptoms such as a burning sensation in the chest called heartburn. Reflux may be so severe that a person may believe they are having a heart attack. Atypical symptoms can also occur like excess belching, hoarseness, sore throat, asthma, or chronic cough.

What is Endoscopy?

Upper endoscopy is a painless procedure that is performed in our outpatient endoscopy center. The test may only take five minutes to perform. The test is performed by a gastroenterologist while you sleep. An anesthesiologist is also involved to provide sedation through an intravenous needle. The doctor will take a pencil thin tube with a light and a camera on the tip and slide it into your mouth and follow the pathway the food takes down the esophagus, stomach and small intestine. These areas can be carefully examined, photographed and biopsied. The risks of complications from the test are very small. There are no alternative tests that can allow the doctor to take important biopsies of the esophagus which are necessary to diagnose Barrett’s esophagus and cancer of the esophagus. As you can see heartburn may not just be a symptom to grin and bear, but may represent a serious health problem. It is therefore very important to talk to your doctor if your symptoms are long standing, require chronic medication therapy or are associated with alarm features.

What can I do to prevent GERD? There are a number of lifestyle and dietary changes that can be tried for most people with GERD. Avoiding foods and beverages that can inappropriately relax the LES is recommended, such as fatty foods, spices, tomato products, coffee, alcohol and sodas.

Stopping cigarette smoking and losing weight if overweight can improve symptoms.

Behavior modifications such as elevating the head of your bed on blocks or using a specifically designed wedge will help keep the stomach contents and acid in the stomach.

Decreasing the size of portions of dinner and eating dinner 2 to 3 hours before bedtime can also avoid night time GERD. What medicines are used to treat GERD? Medicines used to treat GERD include antacids which neutralize acid already produced by the stomach. Other medicines like H2-blockers and proton pump inhibitors suppress the production of acid by the stomach. These medicines are used to prevent symptoms of heartburn and aid in healing of acid induced injury. These medicines are available both over the counter and by prescription. Prescription medications are usually stronger and may give better relief of symptoms.

When should I worry about GERD? There are certain alarm symptoms that may indicate a more serious condition than just typical GERD. If someone with heartburn has problems swallowing, weight loss, nausea, anemia, or blood in the stool then they should tell their doctor. Patients who have had heartburn more than five years or have heartburn starting after the age of 45 should also be concerned and notify their doctor. Alarm symptoms may indicate bleeding ulcers, scars in the esophagus called strictures or even cancer of the esophagus. If medications are required for more than an occasional use or for prolonged periods of time it is important to discuss with your doctor. Patients with heartburn for a long time dramatically increase their risk for developing Barrett’s esophagus and cancer of the esophagus.

What is Barrett’s Esophagus?

Barrett’s Esophagus is a permanent change in the type of cells lining the esophagus in a reaction to chronic acid injury. This condition is associated with an increased risk for the development of cancer of the esophagus. Esophageal cancer is increasing in incidence more rapidly than any other type of cancer. Barrett’s esophagus is most commonly diagnosed in Caucasian males in their fifties to sixties. Barrett’s Esophagus and cancer of the esophagus are best diagnosed with upper endoscopy.

When the gum ridge where teeth are missing is too thin to place a dental implant, bone grafting can be performed to correct the problem. What that means is that a bone replacement product, or even the patient’s own bone, can be placed into the deficient area, stabilized, and allowed to heal. Following healing, dental implants can be placed into that area and then restored with porcelain teeth. This procedure is called “ridge augmentation” and can be accomplished in both the top and bottom jaws.

When teeth are missing, the sinus that lies above the top jaw will expand downward into the ridge and cause bone loss in the gum ridge. This is a correctable problem as well, according to Dr. Banks. “A Sub-Antral Sinus Augmentation – commonly called a ‘Sinus Lift Procedure’ – can be performed, sometimes even at the time of implant placement. This procedure increases the amount of bone in the area where we would like to place a dental implant. Again, a bone replacement product or even the patient’s own bone can be used.”

A common misconception is that the bone is placed into the sinus. In reality, the sinus membrane is actually lifted up (hence to name “sinus lift”) back to where it should be, and the bone graft material is placed under the sinus membrane, restoring the gum ridge and the sinus contour together in one procedure.

Dr. Banks incorporates state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures, such as 3D cone beam CT scanning of the face and jaws, to evaluate her patients for bone grafting procedures. “That way, I can accurately diagnose the magnitude of the bone loss in the area where we would like to place implants and the quality of the patient’s bone ridge in that area, and pre-plan the surgery to ensure the best possible outcome.”

A Second Opinion on Spine Surgery Leads Patient to Promising Clinical Trial, Pain Relief from Spondylolisthesis

Like millions of Americans, Jill Douglas had been suffering from back pain for years. After two years of taking gabapentin to treat spondylolisthesis – a severely painful condition that occurs when a vertebra slips out of place onto the bone below it – the pain radiating down her back and legs became unbearable. Jill decided it was finally time to see a neurosurgeon.

“The first neurosurgeon wanted to put me into surgery two weeks after I first saw him,” explains Jill, who was naturally hesitant to go directly into the operating room during the first few weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“That was just too quick for me.”

She instead sought a second opinion from Scott A. Meyer, MD – a board-certified neurosurgeon and spine specialist at Altair Health – at the recommendation of her sister, a former patient of Dr. Meyer. Dr. Meyer recommended Jill follow a coordinated regimen of pain management coupled with physical therapy to exhaust non-surgical treatment options before moving forward with surgery.

Jill Douglas could no longer ride horses – let alone walk at times – due to excruciating back pain from spondylolisthesis. After successful surgery with the TOPS device, she is pain free … and just about ready to get back on her horses.

TOPS, which stands for Total Posterior Arthroplasty System, is a screw-based implant that serves as an alternative to traditional spinal fusion. Instead of locking vertebrae together through fusion, the device stabilizes the vertebral segment while still allowing normal motion in all directions. The TOPS device has been commercially available in Europe, the UK, Australia and elsewhere since 2012. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration/Investigational Device Exemption trial is part of the process for bringing TOPS to patients in the U.S. “Dr. Meyer explained the difference between regular spinal fusion and the TOPS device,” notes Jill. “If participating and being selected for the trial meant I would be able to preserve my range of motion, I was all for it.”

Jill was randomly selected to receive the TOPS device. Her surgery was the first TOPS facet replacement in New Jersey.

“This was a fantastic opportunity for Jill to access an innovative new device that enabled us to correct her spondylolisthesis and restore her range of motion,” says Dr. Meyer.

Jill now says all the pain she was experiencing prior to surgery is gone. She’s working through physical therapy as she recovers and is looking forward to getting back on her horses and riding again.

“I’m amazed,” concludes Jill. “Before I would yell out in pain because everything I did, even things like sitting down at the computer or getting up to get coffee, was so excruciating.

Originally from and raised in the Parlin section of Sayreville, New Jersey, where I have fond memories. I currently reside at the Jersey shore. I am the proud mother of two grown boys. Have a wonderful husband and an adorable Pomeranian pup.

Growing up I would enjoy playing typical outdoor games with my friends. I would also spend countless hours in my room listening to music and writing my thoughts on anything I could find such as napkins, envelopes, etc.

My children’s books are written about my experiences and memories as a child. And also to the present day life and times. My characters are unusual in appearance that children just love and parents are quite amused. My reviews speak for themselves and I always have been invited back to my previous engagements. My books have good family values, that I learned growing up. Medical Professionals Anal Abscess And Fistula Nina Paonessa, DO, FACOS

What is an anal abscess?

An anal abscess is an infected cavity filled with pus found near the anus or rectum.

What is an anal fistula?

An anal fistula is frequently the result of a previous or current anal abscess, occurring in up to 50% of patients with abscesses.

Inside the anus are small glands. Sometimes, these glands become clogged and become infected. This leads to an anal abscess. The anal fistula is the tract or tunnel that forms between the clogged gland inside the anal canal and the infected skin/abscess outside of the anus. A fistula can present with or without an abscess. Other causes of anal fistula are: Crohn’s disease, radiation, trauma and malignancy/ cancer.

How does a person develop an anal abscess or fistula?

Most anal abscesses are the result of an acute infection in the glands inside of the anus. Occasionally, bacteria, fecal material or foreign matter can clog the anal gland and create a condition for an abscess to form. Once an abscess is drained, in approximately 50% of cases, a tunnel (fistula) will persist under the skin connecting the infected gland to the outside skin where the abscess was located. When this occurs, patients typically experience some type of persistent drainage from the site of where the abscess had been in the perianal skin.

What are the signs or symptoms of an abscess or fistula?

A patient with an abscess may have pain, redness or swelling in the area around the anus. Other common symptoms are fevers, chills, fatigue and generally not feeling well. Those patients that develop an anal fistula frequently complain of perianal irritation, moisture in the perianal area and/or persistent, episodic drainage in the perianal area. A common complaint of patients with anal fistula is the sensation that they cannot keep the perianal area clean or that they feel “wet” in the perianal area.

Are there any tests performed to diagnose an abscess or fistula?

A majority of anal abscesses anal fistula are diagnosed by history and physical examination alone. Occasionally, additional studies such as CT scan or MRI can assist the surgeon with the diagnosis of deeper abscesses or to help identify a deeper or complex fistula tract/tunnel.

How is an anal abscess treated?

The treatment of anal abscess is surgical drainage. Once the overlying and surrounding skin has been numbed with local anesthetic agents, an incision is made in the skin over the abscess to drain the pus. This can usually be performed in the surgeon’s office with local anesthetic and may sometimes require deeper anesthesia in the hospital setting. For patients, such as diabetics or patients with suppressed immune systems, hospitalization may be required for more significant infections.

Are antibiotics necessary to treat anal abscess or anal fistula?

Antibiotics, alone, are NOT a wise treatment for anal abscess or fistula.

Studies have shown that for uncomplicated abscesses, the addition of antibiotics to surgical drainage does not improve healing time or reduce the potential for recurrences. There are, however, certain circumstances in which antibiotics may be added to surgical drainage. These would include those patients with extensive cellulitis, patients with cardiac valvular disease, and those patients with altered or suppressed immune systems. This determination is made by your surgeon after taking a careful, detailed medical history and performing a physical examination.

What is the treatment for anal fistula?

Surgery is almost always necessary to treat an anal fistula. This may require a single stage or multi staged procedure. Colorectal surgeons are specialists

who are trained to treat anal fistula and are well versed in the different types of surgeries to treat anal fistula. Surgery for anal fistula involves connecting the external opening (site of drainage on the skin) to the internal opening (the clogged gland in the anus). There are several different types of surgical procedures to accomplish this and a colorectal surgeon would determine which procedure is best suited to your condition.

The different types of surgery for anal fistula include anal fistulotomy which connects the internal opening (clogged gland) with the external opening (site of drainage on the skin). This creates a groove that will heal from the inside out. Other procedures to treat anal fistula include filling the fistula tract with a material to occlude the fistula or disrupting the tissue around the fistula in order to close the fistula. If performed correctly, surgery for fistula is unlikely to affect bowel control.

What to expect when recovering from fistula surgery?

Patients will be provided pain medication to assist with the discomfort associated with fistula surgery. Taking stool softeners, laxatives and fiber supplement will help to avoid constipation in the postoperative period. Patients should plan for some time at home to recover. Discussing with your colorectal surgeon the anticipated time away from work is very important. Sitz baths also play a key role in the postoperative care.

Dr. Paonessa is a fellowship trained colorectal surgeon who is skilled at treating patients with anal abscess and anal fistulas. She has a 24 hour policy in her office so that if you are in pain from an anal abscess, you can be guaranteed to be seen within 24 hours. Most anal abscesses are drained right in the office under local anesthesia. Dr. Paonessa is also well trained in a variety of techniques to treat simple and complex anal fistulas with excellent outcomes.
