While working from home during this difficult time due to COVID 19 my telephone rings incessantly with scam phone calls. I attempt to block each number but a new one seems to always take its place. As hard as I try to block, many of these scam calls end up in voicemail. There is one call in particular that made its way to VM that I want to share with you. I saved the transcript.

Here is just a part of the message: “….a complaint was filed on your Social Security number for criminal activities so when you get this message kindly call as soon as possible on our number that is 828-***-**** I repeat 828-***-**** before we begin with legal proceedings and have a nice day when you get this message…”

Don’t you just love how they made sure to tell me to have a nice day? All kidding aside, these types of scam messages resulting in financial exploitation are becoming more and more prevalent and are targeting our older population. Scammers target our seniors because they believe they are the most vulnerable because of a perceived decline in cognitive ability and that they have accumulated wealth. Unfortunately, many will respond resulting in a monetary loss to those that can least afford to lose their hard-earned savings.

In May 2018, Congress passed the Senior Safe Act, a law that targets Elder Financial Abuse. The purpose was to encourage cooperation between financial professionals—bankers, brokers, insurance agents—and regulators as well as legal organizations in order to prevent senior financial abuse by providing

immunities for reporting under the bank privacy laws. Since financial professionals are on the front lines, they may be in the best position to spot, stop and report such exploitation. The Seniors Safe Act was modeled on a law previously enacted in Maine.

Institutions are encouraged to provide training for their employees on “how to identify and report the suspected exploitation of a citizen internally, and, as appropriate, to government officials or law enforcement authorities, including common signs that indicate the financial exploitation of senior citizens.” After the training has been completed, the institution and the individuals will be held immune from any lawsuit over privacy invasions that come up as a result of the vigilance.

It is comforting to know that bankers and other financial professionals may now be active allies in the fight against this type of exploitation. Of course, assuming their customer shares these calls with them. When is the best time to intervene to ensure a healthy pregnancy?

We assure adequate folic acid intake through a diet rich in folate and multivitamins containing folic acid 400 micrograms. We stress avoiding alcohol and illicit substances before trying to achieve pregnancy as both increase the risk for serious birth defects and developmental disabilities.

A woman must quit smoking and avoid secondhand smoke as this too can decrease fertility. Smoking during pregnancy limits a baby’s growth and increases risk for premature birth and placental abnormalities. Be sure and wash all fruits and vegetables as pesticides are used on many farms. We also suggest using natural cleaning agents whenever possible.

Dear Readers, The last few months have been filled with uncertainty, angst, and a great deal of panic over the pandemic. We have had to work a bit harder at managing emotions and most importantly, staying healthy. While the quarantine gave New Jersey one big collective pause, it has also wreaked havoc on the economy. However, the time also provided folks an opportunity to reflect and discover long held passions and interests that were possibly forgotten in normally hectic times. There was certainly ample time to spend with loved ones and more family dinners minus the frenetic rush of activities which normally fill up the calendar this time of year.

While we are not out of the woods just yet, a return to a more normal pace is happening all over the state. We are embarking on summer at the jersey shore and after the long hibernation, folks are eager to get out, socialize (safely) and enjoy Financial Management everything the shore has to offer.

Ultherapy - Lift And Tighten Your Skin Without Surgery Or Downtime What Is Ultherapy?

The only FDA-cleared, non-invasive procedure that lifts and tightens the neck, chin and brow, and improves lines and wrinkles on the upper chest.

The Ultherapy procedure stimulates collagen production by delivering focused ultrasound energy to the skin’s foundational layer without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin. What To Expect

A single treatment helps to counteract the effects of gravity and aging with no downtime. During your consultation we will address your concerns, assess your skin and determine if you are a candidate.

We have a computer program which could show you what your results will look like. There are no special preparations or skin care that need to be followed prior to treatment.

During your treatment a cooling gel will be applied to the skin and a smooth applicator, selected based on the area to be treated and the depth to be treated, will be used. Using the ultrasound to determine the optimal placement of the ultrasound energy optimizes your best results. You will feel a warm/heat sensation as the energy is applied to the proper depth of your skin. Comfort level varies among individuals and areas treated but only lasts as long as the energy is being delivered.

  Be Sun Smart   Lisa Ledden As we enjoy the outdoors and the warmer weather, please be safe when it comes to sun exposure. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the US. One in five Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. Always protect yourself with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher; reapply every 80–90 minutes or after swimming/sweating; wear sun-protective clothing including large-brim hats and sunglasses; and seek shade.

There are two types of sunscreen to help protect from UV rays. It is important to understand the difference between physical vs chemical sunscreen filter so you can select the best sun protection.

• The active ingredients in a mineral sunscreen are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Mineral sunscreen ingredients form a barrier on the skin that helps reflect UV rays. These are effective against both UVA and UVB rays.

• The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens include oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, oxtocrylene, homosalate and octinoxiate.

Chemical sunscreens penetrate the skin to absorb UV rays.

The US FDA has approved both physical/mineral sunscreen and chemical sunscreen, deeming them safe and effective.

Scientific evidence supports the benefits of using sunscreen to minimize short-term and long-term damage to the skin from the sun’s rays. Claims that sunscreen ingredients are toxic or a hazard to human health have not been proven.

If you are concerned about certain sunscreen ingredients, you can select a formula that contains different active ingredients. Mineral sunscreens are not absorbed by the skin, but rather work as a barrier to the harmful UV waves.

As long as your sunscreen is broad-spectrum, water-resistant and has an SPF 30 or higher, it can effectively protect you from the sun.

Varicose Veins: Not Just a Cosmetic Problem

ne of the most common circulatory system problems affecting individuals of all ages is venous insufficiency, also known as “Venous Reflux Disease”.

This occurs when one-way valves in the leg veins begin to fail and become leaky. This causes blood to pool in the legs and can lead to the development of large protruding legs veins, known as varicose veins. It can also cause a variety of painful or uncomfortable symptoms in the affected legs. Some of the most common of these symptoms are leg pain, leg fatigue and heaviness, swelling and skin itching. In severe cases, this can lead to permanent defects in the appearance and integrity of the skin and even the development of wounds, called venous leg ulcers.

It is estimated that 20 to 40 million Americans suffer from venous insufficiency. Both men and women are affected. The most common risk factors are occupations that require standing, a family history of varicose veins, pregnancy, being over weight and increasing age.

However, some affected individuals do not have any of these risks. The diagnosis of venous reflux disease is made with physical examination and painless Doppler ultrasound testing.

Advances in treatment now make relief of the symptoms and appearance of varicose veins possible without the need for hospitalization or painful vein stripping surgery. For some people, wearing special venous support stockings will help control symptoms.

However, when stockings alone are not sufficient, or when individuals require a more permanent solution to varicose veins, new minimally invasive office

procedures can often be used to cure venous reflux disease and its symptoms.

One of the most effective treatments for venous reflux disease is the Closure Procedure, which treats the abnormal veins with radiofrequency (RF) energy. The RF energy is delivered through a device called a catheter that is inserted into the diseased vein.

This causes the vein to close down, essentially removing it from the circulation. The body then redirects the blood into the normal leg veins. This eliminates the venous reflux, markedly relieving the symptoms and often improving the appearance of the varicose veins as well. The procedure is performed in a comfortable office setting and takes about 30 minutes. There are usually no incisions or sutures. General anesthesia is not required. Patients typically experience minimal discomfort and are able to return to their usual activities in about a day or two.

Vaccines for Adolescents

Reliance Medical Group Explains The Importance It is time to discuss the various vaccines that are mandated and review the other vaccines that are strongly recommended.

State Mandated Vaccines Several years ago, the State of New Jersey issued a regulation that all eleven-year-old children have to be protected against two bacteria, pertussis and Neisseria Meningitidis.

Pertussis causes whopping cough. Neisseria Meningitidis causes lethal meningitis. These are diseases you want protection against. The Adacel vaccine protects against pertussis, diphtheria and tetanus. The Menactra vaccine protects against Neisseria Meningitidis.

• Neisseria Meningitidis is a relatively rare bacteria, but, if someone does contact the infection, she/he is very sick. Despite the best medical care possible, the fatality rate is ten percent. And even if one survives the infection, he/she has a 30 percent chance of being crippled for life. We’re talking loss of an eye, an arm, or hearing-that sort of crippled.

• Pertussis is a much more common infection than Neisseria. And to add to the problem, human beings are the only known host for pertussis. The only way to protect yourself is to be vaccinated. I recommend all adults get the Adacel vaccine.

• Whooping cough is an obnoxious beastie. If you contract it, you do not acquire permanent immunity. You have about ten years of protection, and then you can get it again.

Four of our families have come down with pertussis in the past few years. The members of each family were coughing for two months. The Chinese call pertussis the cough of one hundred days. People break ribs this way. And it is imperative that new parents get the Adacel vaccine.

The incidence of pertussis has increased from 3,000 cases annually in the 1970s to 25,000 cases in the 2010s. And the fatality rate has almost tripled. Those succumbing to pertussis are babies under six months of age. The babies are getting pertussis from their parents and caregivers.

Other Important Vaccines • Gardasil. Another vaccine that is important for adolescents to get is Gardasil. This vaccine protects against cancers caused by the Human Papilomavirus. Originally, the vaccine was created to protect women from cervical cancer.

Further research has demonstrated that the Human Papilomavirus causes other cancers in both men and women. The virus causes penile cancer in men, and mouth, tongue, and anal cancer in men and women. There are over 33,000 new cases of Human Pipilomarivus cancers every year.

• Flu Shot. Influenza is an annual problem. As of today, we do not have any information the severity of this year’s flu. Last year’s flu season was mild. The good news is that the pediatric fatality rate from the flu has been dropping. Evryone six months of age and over should get a flu shot, as long as the individual is not allergic to the vaccine. It is particularly important for pregnant moms to get the shot. This will protect the baby because the mom’s antibiotics will cross the placenta and protect the baby. After birth, babies under six months of age cannot get a flu shot. And no, the injectable influenza vaccine cannot give you the flu.

I urge all parents to give their children the protection those vaccines provide, and the long life the vaccines help ensure.

Meet The Doctors Of Reliance Medical Group Barbara Greenling, DNP

Anne I. Petit, M.D. Dr. Anne Petit is a medical doctor who specializes in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology, an area that specializes in the field of women’s health and well-being.

Dr. Petit hails from the Caribbean and spent her formative years in New York City. She completed her undergraduate education at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, and then went on to attend Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pa., graduating with a Doctor of Medicine degree. She completed her internship and residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center/Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, New York.

Dr. Petit came to the Atlantic City area to fulfill a three-year requirement to work in a medically under-served area. The three years have now extended to more than 25+ years and she remains in the Atlantic City area, continuing to work in her profession and humbly submitting to God’s will for her life.

15 Health & Wellness Health Benefits of a Regular Yoga Practice Heidi Farber Perhaps more than ever, yoga has been widely studied and evaluated for its positive effects and benefits. Evidence-based research not only reveals the science of yoga but also explains its therapeutic efficacy when used in conjunction with conventional medicine.

Studies show that regular long-term yoga practice improves immune function, reduces perceived stress, enhances mood, controls the effects of asthma, slows the aging process, regulates respiration (affecting emotional states), and creates a sense of well-being.

There are many components to yoga practice and this varies depending on culture and commitment to practice. The studies measured the effects of postures, breathing, relaxation and meditation on people who practiced yoga regularly. Yoga postures improve strength, respiration and flexibility. Breathing techniques help with self-regulation, which increases resilience and creates equanimity. Relaxation generates awareness, mindfulness and concentration. Meditation is a spiritual practice leading to transcendence, other states of being and ultimately to a unitive state of oneness.

What is yoga’s effect on stress? Stress underlies all things and alters every aspect of life. It is defined as a positive or negative challenge, either short or long term. Not all stress is bad, as we need it in certain challenging situations. In the immediate moment, it can save your life. It is in place for us as a protection. No stress can lead to boredom or apathy. Life circumstances, personality, genetics and health & lifestyle affect our stress response. How well can you recover from stress? How much stress can you tolerate? What is your sense of control? What is your perceived stress and can you adapt positively? Stress is in the eye of the beholder and changes over time. Creating balanced stress is the key to happiness. Resilience is important. Unmanaged chronic stress is cumulative and can be harmful to your mood and your immune system (causing inflammation). One’s attitude and life circumstances affect stress response. Using yoga as a modality for dealing with stress, students of yoga learned to manage and reduce stress levels. In some studies, the primary reason for beginning a yoga practice was to build muscle and create flexibility. However, over time, students noticed that yoga improved their mental health. Then stress relief became the motivation for continued practice. Their ability to regulate emotions, and to stay calm and centered, proved that yoga was a valuable strategy in manipulating stress. People were less reactive and able to bounce back more quickly in response to high-stress moments. Stress was measured by cortisol and other hormones and blood pressure as well as perceived stress. Yoga reduces maladaptive behaviors and triggers the relaxation response and quiets stress. Deep breathing exercises (Pranayama) regulate the autonomic nervous system by deactivating the sympathetic nervous system and activating the parasympathetic nervous system.

Studies show that yoga affects our pulmonary function. Practicing Pranayama can be therapeutic, making respiration more efficient, enhancing heart rate and reducing blood pressure. This regulation of vital body function creates a calm psychological state of being. Changing breathing patterns, making them longer and deeper, control the nervous system and brain states, inducing a steadiness of mind. This diaphragmatic manipulation of the breath results in less reactivity and more equanimity.

Respiration affects emotions and vice versa. It is your first line of defense in the treatment of anxiety and depression as well as other emotional disorders. Modulating the breath affects your psychological state. Stress regulation works with your limbic system, your emotional brain. Tension, anger and depression drop with slow, regular breathing techniques. Long, slow deep breathing makes the lungs more efficient as more air expands into the lungs, and changes your emotional state. In addition, rapid and shallow Kapalabhati breathing is beneficial as well in cleansing the body. Some yoga practices also include breath retention, Kumbhaka, stretching lung capacity.

Research has shown the positive effects of yoga in the treatment of chronic diseases of the lungs.

It can control symptoms as well as avoiding triggers. Stress, allergies, infection, cold and exercise can induce an episode of asthma. But with a regular yoga practice, the inflammatory response can be reduced. There is a psychological aspect of this, too. Stress, anxiety and sadness suggest the psychophysiological effect of the disease. The brain plays a critical role in this process. The stress hormone cortisol affects the inflammatory response. Mind-body practices help address the underlying causes of asthma. Self-regulatory components of yoga have an effect. Fitness, self-awareness, focused attention and spirituality affect respiration. Studies show immediate positive effects of yoga as well as

long-term effects. Practicing yoga regularly controls the rate of breathing and anxiety associated with asthma. Diaphragmatic breathing used as an intervention improves the negative effects of triggers.

Depression and yoga research concludes that practicing yoga has a major effect on the mood.

Loss of interest in daily activities, sleep disturbance, fatigue, sense of worthlessness, and lack of concentration are a few indicators of depression. Mind-body practices have been shown to regulate the autonomic nervous system. In the case of depressive moods, we can up-regulate to bring about a feeling of alertness and focus. With the practice of yoga we can change brain function. When body systems are dysregulated, yoga proves to be a good treatment in reducing dysfunction. With selfregulation we can control internally. This inner awareness includes observing and regulating negative thoughts, which enhances mood and helps cope with emotions. The physical practice, the relaxation and meditative parts of yoga training, reduce the stressors that cause depression, thus creating emotional balance.

Yoga has a significant effect on the immune system. Your immune system is a complex defense system involving organs, tissues and molecules in the bloodstream. It feeds back to the brain as the brain feeds back to the immune system. Chronic stress equals chronic disease. Prolonged consistent stress degrades the system, causing inflammation. This makes you more prone to illness.

Psychoneuroimmunology shows how the brain interacts with the immune system. Some short-term or acute stress can be good for you and improves your immune response. However, overactive stress has the reverse impact. Healthy ways to improve immunity are diet, exercise, weight control, minimize stress and get adequate sleep. Another cause of impaired immunity is sleep deprivation or disturbance, which can leave you vulnerable to disease as well as reduce antibody production and cell function.

Mind-body practices create resilience, balancing immune function. Yoga stretching, controlled breathing, and self-awareness down-regulate the body. Mindfulness and meditation have relevance to immune function by changing behavior, thus reducing the propensity of disease. Programs like Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction increase the antibody response and prevent disease. Our ability to handle stress can boost immunity. Studies demonstrate how cancer patients doing a regular yoga practice can improve the number of natural killer cells in the body. The research shows a significant reduction in cortisol and adrenaline, which enhance the immune system. Over time, results show improvement in stress and immunity. Efficient stress modulation reduces susceptibility of illness.

Yoga also slows down the aging process. As we age, we become more vulnerable to disease.

Research shows that mild, gentle restorative yoga affects brain function and improves balance and flexibility. With mindfulness and meditative practices, the elderly can maintain cognitive faculties and performance. It will improve the quality of life, sleep and overall well-being. The decline in the physical as well as the psychological aspects of life will be lessened.

The variety of health or well-being outcomes targeted by yoga intervention is impressive. Evidence shows that regular yoga practices improve quality of life. Formal studies published by the medical and psychological community that used yoga interventions to promote or treat physical and mental health clearly document the benefits of yoga.

Meet Laurie Zaleski, Owner Of The Funny Farm Rescue Laurie, Owner, pictured with Yogi and Farley Photo by Amanda Werner

A truly remarkable, accomplished, self-determined, and inspirational woman living in Southern New Jersey is Laurie Zaleski.

Laurie Zaleski’s mother, Anne McNulty, rented a home for 28 years while working for an animal control service and raising 4 kids on her own.

Anne would save every animal she could that once faced no hope. She called it her “Funny Farm” because most of the animals were misfits but she loved them just the same. Laurie would watch her mother struggle to pay rent, buy food, make ends meet, but still show incredible compassion to animals that no one else wanted. She told her mom that someday, she’d buy her her own farm where she could save as many animals as she wanted.

In her early 20’s, Laurie worked at Campbell’s Soup as an illustrator while attending Rowan University studying photography and graphic design. Soon after graduation, she established Art-Z Graphics, a successful photography and graphics company, contracting to the Federal Aviation Administration and Selective Service System for nearly 30 years.

Young Laurie Zaleski purchased a run-down rental property for her mother in Mays Landing, NJ with 15 acres and a barn but sadly, her mother passed away from cancer just two weeks before the purchase of the property was completed at just 52 years of age.

Devastated at her mother’s loss at such a young age, Laurie took on her 30 animals and faced a future alone and uncertain. Each day brought new challenges and the learning curve was immense. With the help of her sister and brother and a few friends, she fixed up the property and the Funny Farm she had once known with her mother, had a new home, a permanent home.

Fast forward 20 years. Volunteers and visitors came from miles away!

People told their friends! Some made significant contributions. Today, there are over 600 rescued animals all living the best lives possible at the Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary, most roam free.

In honor of her mother Anne McNulty, who’s ashes are buried at the farm, and having no money growing up, Laurie decided that the Funny

Farm would always be free so anyone could come and love the animals, even if they had nothing. Later, when feeding bills exceeded $4000/mo, Laurie’s Funny Farm became a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity.

Under the leadership of Laurie Zaleski, and her incredible team of volunteers and supporters, The Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary has become one of the largest animal sanctuaries in the USA. True to her word, admission has always been free. People come from all over the world to see animals that no one else wanted. Today, they live the lives of celebrities through social media and their stories inspire millions.

Funny Farm Rescue & Sanctuary has earned many awards including the Top 10 places to visit in New Jersey. Personally, Laurie Zaleski has earned the NJ Heartland Hero award in 2017, Who’s Who Hero Award of Professional Women 2019, and been inducted into the NJ Veterinarians Animal Hall of Fame, 2018. Laurie was also awarded the Founders Live Girl Power Award as one of the Top Five Women Entrepreneurs in the Northeast.

Active in her local community, Ms. Zaleski has her own Kindness Program, which includes teaching about anti-bullying and special needs in schools on Fridays with several of her friendly animals to show how different species interact with each other. Laurie demonstrates to children that we can all get along despite our differences. She also visits nursing homes and inspires everyone to never give up!

Likewise, she has co-created three of a planned ten children’s books on anti-bullying and special needs.

Another one of Ms. Zaleski’s projects involves a film titled, “Chuck, A Funny Farm Story” about her inspirational dog who has special needs and sits upright in a chair in order to eat. Her film, produced by Glasstown Productions, has already won numerous awards at film festivals.

Another part of Laurie Zaleski’s mission is to prevent cruelty to animals by increasing the awareness of animal abuse through education. Her knowledge, expertise and facilities make her truly unique in southern New Jersey and the surrounding areas. Laurie is truly a unique and inspirational woman of our time.

I Have A Bunion: Is It Serious?

When the joint at the big toe (the metatarsal bone) turns outward and the big toe leans inward toward your other toes, you have a bunion. Bunions may start mild and with time, develop into a greater and greater protrusion. They come in a variety of sizes: small, medium, large, and severe. Though a bunion is often a mild annoyance, it usually isn’t painful.

Some bunions, however, can cause serious problems.

A bunion can deform your foot and affect your choice of footwear. In some cases, a bunion can lead to disability and sedentary habits. Inflammation

A bunion can cause inflammation that causes pain in the toe. The bursa, a fluid-filled sac that surrounds this metatarsophalangeal joint, becomes irritated because of the irregular bone position. This contributes to stiffness, pain, and sometimes swelling.

wearing narrow, pointed-toe footwear. High heels can also trigger bunion development because they shift your body weight forward. Once a bunion develops, it may become impossible to slide your feet into fashionable shoes.

Impaired foot function

A bunion can, with time, affect your foot’s ability to function. Your other toes may suffer, forming corns or bending into uncomfortable hammertoes.

You may find your nails become ingrown and calluses develop on the bottom of your foot. A bunion may also cause you to shift your weight, causing referred pain at the ball of your foot. With time, you may find exercise and even walking to be uncomfortable.

Decreased quality of life

Women are far more likely to develop bunions than men, and this foot disorder can lead to disability and sedentary habits. A bunion can interfere with the ability to do daily chores and activities, especially as a woman (or any person) ages.

What to do about a bunion

Conservative management of bunions includes making smart shoe choices, such as those with a wide, flexible sole and room at the front toe box. We recommend athletic shoes, soft leather shoes, and sandals. Avoid high heels with a lift higher than an inch.

You may also choose to protect the bunion with a moleskin or gel-filled pad. We can also fit you for shoe inserts that can help position your foot correctly. Ice packs, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, and warm soaks help when a bunion becomes painful and inflamed.

In more severe cases, the Go Feet team may offer cortisone injections to alleviate pain temporarily. In the most severe cases, Dr. Stuart Honick may recommend a surgical procedure to correct the joint.

attachment on the underside of the tongue binds the tongue in an abnormal position to the inner surface of the lower jaw or the floor of the mouth. In infants this may cause inability to feed properly.

In young children this attachment may cause speech problems because the tongue function and mobility are limited. When someone with tongue tie tries to stick out their tongue it will be notched, or heart shaped. The earlier this condition is treated, the better; Dr. Banks has treated patients as young as one day old for this condition.

Excessive maxillary frenum: The soft tissue band attachment of the lips to the

dental ridge sometimes is abnormally large or is attached onto the gum ridge between the front teeth.

Often this attachment needs to be surgically modified if there is a space (diastema) between the front teeth that is going to be treated with braces. Dr. Banks provides this service for children on a routine basis. Often the treatment can be performed by her with a LASER and without stitches.

Extractions of “baby teeth”: Let’s face it: Sometimes no matter how hard you try, some children are prone to decay affecting their primary teeth (“baby teeth”). Not all primary teeth can be restored, and some children are not able to sit through dental appointments, or have already had bad experiences in the dental chair. Dr. Banks and her well-trained surgical anesthesia team will make your child’s experience a good one.

Extractions for braces: Your orthodontist may recommend removal of certain teeth for orthodontic purposes. These may be perfectly healthy primary teeth that are not falling out on time and therefore are preventing eruption of the adult teeth; or the teeth may be perfectly healthy adult teeth that need removal to treat dental crowding. Whatever the situation, Dr. Banks and her well-trained surgical anesthesia team will provide care for your child in a safe, clean, and friendly environment Unerupted or impacted teeth: Some teeth will not erupt into the mouth on their own. A common example is an upper canine tooth. If the tooth is going to be positioned into the dental arch, the tooth needs to be surgically uncovered and a special bracket will be bonded to the tooth. Supernumerary (extra) teeth: In general, a supernumerary tooth that develops in the bone of the top jaw between the two front teeth (called a mesiodens) needs to be removed.

The same holds true when there are extra teeth in other regions of the mouth. The presence of these teeth can cause disturbances in the normal eruption pattern of the surrounding teeth. If your dentist recommends removal of supernumerary teeth, see Dr. Banks. These procedures may be complex, and Dr. Banks has 3-D imaging capabilities right in the office to carefully plan the treatment for optimal results.

Anesthesia options include local anesthesia (numbing), nitrous oxide gas (“laughing

gas”), sedation, and general anesthesia. Treatment is usually performed in the office; however, some patients may require treatment in the outpatient hospital setting. Women Of Atlantic County Jacqueline Meiluta, Executive Director, Volunteers in Medicine Jacqueline Meiluta, Executive Director of Volunteers in Medicine, was born and raised in Burlington County. She and her husband, Alec Vint, have considered Sea Isle City home for the last 20 years. After a very successful career in the for-profit world, Jackie chose to bring her skills to the non-profit world. She found her true passion at Volunteers in Medicine where she leads a team of 100 volunteers and dedicates her time to ensuring care for our neighbors in need. Under her leadership, VIM expanded into Atlantic County.

Jackie is a fierce advocate for access to healthcare for all and is often invited to speak on this topic. Another passion is workforce development. In 2009, she was instrumental in the development of an open-shop apprenticeship program for metal building construction. The program later received federal approval.

She continues to provide consultancy to two national non-profits where she provides guidance and training on apprenticeship as well as labor development.

Lisa Ledden Nurse Practitioner, Certified Dermatology Lisa Ledden has been a nurse practitioner specializing in dermatology since 1996.

Before this, she had a broad background in civilian and military medicine. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts in 1985, she was awarded a military commission and accepted into a competitive internship with the U.S. Air Force. As an officer, she practiced trauma and emergency/critical care nursing and was part of a field medicine deployment team. She was awarded the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal in 1991.

After seven years of service, Lisa left the military as a captain to pursue a civilian career. She accepted a position as nurse manager of the Heart Group of Oklahoma (the largest cardiac practice in central Oklahoma) and subsequently managed emergency services at Milford Memorial Hospital in Delaware while pursuing a master’s degree in nursing at Wilmington College in Georgetown, DE. At that time, she developed a special interest in dermatology.

While continuing to practice in dermatology, she was an adjunct professor in the graduate program at Wilmington College. In 1998, she relocated to Michigan to practice dermatology and expanded her knowledge of cosmetic and surgical dermatology. Missing the East Coast, she then relocated to southern New Jersey, where she now practices with Certified Dermatology.

Siobhan M. Connolly, CTFA Vice President and Trust Officer Garden State Trust Company Siobhan Connolly moved from New York with her husband and two girls to Howell, NJ in 2008 to be closer to her father who lives in Manasquan. While in New York she taught high school, worked with at risk students teaching career skills and employment preparation and owned a retail business.

Erin Intessimoni is a Jersey girl. She was born and raised in Winslow Township.

She is a current resident of Waterford Township, where she lives with her husband of 12 years and their two children. From a young age Erin felt very passionate about helping others. She became a registered nurse in 2003 and worked at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital for 10 years. While working she continued her education and obtained her master’s degree in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner.

Erin presently works at Relievus pain management. She has worked for Relievus for five years. Working as a nurse practitioner in pain management has been very rewarding for Erin. Being able to help her patients have a better quality of life is her main goal. At Relievus she is able to work with a multi-disciplinary team in offering the most up-to-date procedures. Julia Mastalski Owner, The Bra Boudoir Julia grew up in Egg Harbor Twp. She later attended college at Moore College of Art and Design, where she earned her BFA and discovered her love for lingerie. After college she moved back to NJ in 2012. She started working for The Bra Boudoir in Somers Point. That’s where she learned all about and fell in love with doing bra fittings. Getting to see the transformation from a woman coming in insecure and uncomfortable to leaving comfortable, confident and happy from receiving a great bra fitting gave Julia just what she was looking for in a career. It combines her love for lingerie, knowledge of garment construction, and being able to help people all in one awesome job.

Julia worked for The Bra Boudoir for four more years down in Rio Grande and took over ownership in October 2017. Karen grew up in the Philadelphia suburbs and moved to South Jersey when she married her husband John, of 30 years! Karen and John, and their children Christopher and Brooke, then moved to Florida where they spent the last 24 years until moving back to South Jersey in May 2018. Karen’s heart had never left Philadelphia, where her parents, family and friends are. Karen and John bought a fixer upper on the Mullica River in Green Bank, New Jersey, where John is utilizing his lifelong building skills and are doing a complete renovation.

People are different or unique— their lives, faiths, beliefs, values, relationships, thoughts, choices, personality, emotions, skin color, size, and physical appearance, the list goes on. And when your uniqueness differs from theirs, it bothers them and some choose to criticize or say hurtful things to boost their ego or fill in gaps in their selfesteem. If what you are doing is not harmful, continue doing what makes you happy and what pleases you. After all, as Dr. Seuss states, “Those who matter don’t mind, and those who do mind don’t matter.”

Put aside your pride. It is said that of the deadly sins—lust, envy, anger, greed, gluttony, sloth—that pride is the deadliest of all, and the root or beginning of all evil. Less dramatically, having a healthy dose of pride is important to healthy self-respect and self-esteem. However, too much can lead to unreasonable behaviors or actions—or the manifestation of the other sins. Often, pride is rooted from (unrealistic) fear of embarrassment or shame, and results in the breakdown of relationships or that special bond. When appropriate, don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself, acknowledge you don’t know everything or that you are wrong, and even say you are sorry.

You don’t have to attend every argument you’re invited to. While not always easy to decline the invitation, most are not our fights to fight. And they are a waste of time and energy—which can never be recovered—and can even ruin relationships, which may be difficult or impossible to mend. Negativity is not productive and it sets fertile grounds for

the sprouting of anger, resentment and, in some instances, bitterness.

Like a weed, they crowd out or annihilate positivity.

Don’t compare yourself to others. Someone else’s story

is not your story. And as Theodore Roosevelt stated, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” This is particularly true today where social media has created a new term: “FOMO”—fear of missing out. Somebody’s story or feed is just a highlight reel of our best or photoshopped pictures or life event. There’s always going to be something better than what you have. And if that’s what you focus on, it robs you of the ability to enjoy what you have in your life.

Cherish important relationships. To cherish is to protect and care for someone lovingly or hold something dear—to nurture. And there are many ways to do this: spend time with family and friends; express gratitude towards them; tell them how you feel (e.g., “I love you”) and that they matter (humans have an innate desire to receive and give love); practice forgiveness; perform thoughtful acts for them (even simple ones such as a card, letter, email, or text with good wishes are powerful); and surround yourself with memories such as pictures of your loved one or other mementos.

Don’t let complaining become a habit. It’s annoying and no one really cares what you’re saying when all you do is complain. Often, complaining is a way of relieving stress, results from frustration and an inability to solve the problem, is how you grew up, is part of your family culture/dynamic, is attention-seeking, or is a manifestation of depressive symptoms. And it negatively impacts our mind and body.

Practice empathy. Defined as “the ability to understand and share the feelings of another,” empathy helps build trust while reducing stress and tension. Despite individual differences in empathy between individuals, it can be developed. Make an active effort to listen, connect with someone’s feelings, acknowledge their pain, and show them love.

Depression and Drugs Amongst the Ruins

Kaboom!! Slam, Bam, Woooosh!!! The explosions just keep coming. The rock, hot ash, debris and destruction are all over and still burning. The rubble of many things once standing are now tattered, torn and strewn all about the countryside. Screams of shock, pain, fear and confusion ring out like a knell of cacophonous synchrony—familiar, but different and louder and impossible to ignore. Death is in the air from many directions. Sanctuary is sought, but no such quarter truly survived the force of the explosions. Only false security and numbness remain. Trauma from every direction and it just keeps on coming.

What’s next? When is it safe? When does it end? What will be there, if and when it does, who will be left? How do we carry on? Who will lead? Who will be left to follow? Where is up? Why, why all this and now? Who can I trust?

Where did I put my gun?

Is this the description of Pompeii & Vesuvius erupting in 79 AD? Is this a description of the latest sci-fi disaster or thriller from Hollywood? Is this a description of the seige of Leningrad in 1941? Is this a description of the events from the Book of Revelations?

The answer is a resounding YES to all of them. But this one is our version in our time. In a way, it is reminiscent and similar to an old George Clooney film from 2000 called “The Perfect Storm.” It is the story of a small fishing vessel with a few good men and an intrepid, driven captain all searching for the “catch of abundance” as their prize. In order to do this however, they ignored the vehement warnings of others and the rapidly emerging signs of something ominous approaching; the convergence of 3 unusual natural phenomena, all at the same time and in the same place. The result was a cataclysmic catastrophe and unnecessary loss of life. What a price for a prize never even attained.

The converging vectors presently are: a global pandemic with 2 million people infected and 122,000 have lost their lives to date in this country alone. And it continues without any treatments. The other is an economic catastrophe with unemployment nearing the scale of the Great Depression and desperation all

over the planet. Additionally, there is severe civil unrest about ongoing racism that is creating masses in the streets and elements of criminality hijacking the focus and purpose of the unrest and global reactions to the atrocities caused by generations of racism.

No one yet knows the COVID-19 consequences resulting from the masses in the streets, huddled up for hours and days, shouting their disdain for these atrocities. The concern is that in some cases, some people are not taking the necessary precautions in light of the virus. It is also a matter of where people went after the protesting was done for the day and how they got to where they were going, and who else was there in their houses in terms of the heightened possibility of spreading of the virus. One has to wonder if a second wave in the Fall, or sooner has been given a head start.

It appears there is a loss of refinement, grace, art, wit; the strength of what is delicate and respected. Tradition, values, fairness, kindness and etiquette seem to have vanished like the days of chivalry, having been replaced by aggression, deceit, gratuitous power, even violence with selfishness and greed in full force. The “7 Deadly Sins” aren’t called deadly for no reason. The moral decay of humanity is out in the open and colliding with the world melting from pole to pole, literally, from the inside out and from the outside in.

All these powerful forces at once have given way to palpable suffering for many from any variety of reasons, i.e. grief, fear, anger, anxiety, desperation, loss, serious change, helplessness, isolation, despair, hopelessness, boredom and depression. People with pre-existing mental health or substance use issues are the most vulnerable, but newly created pathologies are also increasing more and more. Access to care, disparities in care and fatalistic, even self-defeating attitudes impede vital resources for care.

A recent article in the Washington Post stated a published study found that nearly half of the people in the United States feel their mental health is being negatively impacted. In the same article a tracking poll conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation in March, was cited as stating, “45 per cent of adults say the pandemic has affected their mental health, and 19 per cent say it has had a “major impact.” According to the same poll, the rates are somewhat “higher among women, Hispanic adults and black adults.”

An article in the publication THE HILL entitled “US Ill-prepared for Coronavirus-fueled mental health crisis,” aptly cites an estimate by The Well Being Trust that the virus could cause “75,000 deaths of despair” from drug and alcohol and suicide if the US does not improve access to mental health and substance use disorder treatment.” It is more than distressful that prior to the pandemic, mental health and substance use disorder treatment was in crisis. Approximately 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness with anxiety and depression being predominant according to THE HILL. And of those with substance use disorder, about onehalf also have mental health issues; this added to the fact that less than 50% of each group received care in 2018 is a monumental challenge.

Other statistics found by the Kaiser Family Foundation cites the mental health challenges caused by social isolation, especially among older adults who are less likely to discuss and seek treatment. They are also more likely to suffer from “loneliness and bereavement,” and are particularly at a greater risk for depression.

Mental health is at its tipping point--- “The isolation, the fear, the uncertainty, the economic turmoil - they all cause or could cause psychological distress,” said Devora Kestel, director of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) mental health department.”

Mary Eliza Mahoney A few short months ago we were in the middle of a pandemic, a world crisis and fear placed upon us to leave our homes. It is amazing how quickly those feelings can fade with the warmth of the summer sun and some good old-fashioned laughter. On a beautiful June Sunday my sister was married in front of her immediate family and a few close friends. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to a nurse who works in a Philadelphia hospital. A nurse who, for the first time in months, was able to enjoy a day full of life and laughter. Although the day was simply magical, I took a step back and contemplated the lives of our HistoryLink.org. nation’s nurses, who may still be working on the front lines still fighting COVID-19. In fact, it is known that after the 19th Amendment was passed in 1920, Mary Mahoney was among the first women to register to vote in the city of Boston.

Mary Mahoney grew her wings on January 4, 1926, and the trailblazing imprint she made upon women and nurses has continued long after her passing. Mary was not only one of four students who completed the program, but Mary was the first African American in the United States to earn a professional nursing license! The second tip is to keep leather shoes out of the water. Grab a few sheets of newspaper, ball them up and stick them inside those shoes.

The paper will absorb moisture, as well as smells.

If your fabric shoes have gotten a little dingy or have a few dirt marks, try dampening a sponge or rag and applying a small amount of a mild detergent like dish soap, liquid laundry detergent or baby shampoo, then give the exterior of the shoe a good going over.

Please don’t throw out your shoes, leather purses, or coats just because they are damaged. Remember I can repair heels, soles, stretch and shine shoes, and most straps on leather purses. Bring me your broken heels, faded leather shoes and I will make them as good as new, I promise!
