Meet The Doctors Of Shore Gastroenterology Reza Akhtar, M.D.

Ben Terrany, M.D.

Growing up in New Jersey, Dr. Akhtar graduated from Rutgers University as a Henry Rutgers Scholar. He completed his medical education and training at Tufts University and then Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. During his fellowship, he further sub-specialized in advanced endoscopic techniques in EUS and ERCP.

Dr. Terrany is board certified in gastroenterology and liver disease. While he has a special interest in esophageal disease and advanced endoscopic procedures, his practice encompasses all areas of clinical gastroenterology. Dr. Terrany is active in teaching medical residents and students at Monmouth Medical Center and Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He has given numerous lectures and actively trained physicians in performing endoscopic procedures.

Shamina Dhillon, M.D.

Dr. Dhillon completed medical school at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. She completed her internal medicine and gastroenterology training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. During her training at the Mayo Clinic, she received several national awards for her research in Barrett’s esophagus, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease. In addition to her full-time practice, Dr. Dhillon is a clinical assistant professor at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Junsuke Maki, M.D.

Dr. Maki completed his internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Hospital and pursued his gastroenterology and hepatology fellowship at The University of Pennsylvania, where he specialized in the areas of inflammatory bowel disease and esophageal disorders. He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and is currently an assistant clinical professor of medicine at Drexel University.

Penny Turtel, M.D.

Dr. Turtel graduated from Cornell University Medical Center and completed her medical residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, Dr. Turtel is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology. Areas of publication and ongoing special interest include inflammatory bowel disease and small bowel diseases. Dr. Turtel has been listed in Best Doctors in America, Top Doctors (New York and New Jersey), Inside Jersey and US News and Health Report.

Mitchell Schwartz, M.D.

Dr. Schwartz graduated from Albert Einstein School of Medicine and completed his residency in medicine and fellowship in gastroenterology at Einstein/ Montefiore in New York. He is a Fellow in the American College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology and is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology. He has been listed in New Jersey Magazine Top Doctors, Castle Connolly Top Doctors and the Best Doctors in America.
