THE YELLOW WALLPAPER

Welcome to the Coronet Theatre, where we are honoured to present Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s iconic work, The Yellow Wallpaper , under the capable direction of Stephanie Mohr.
The Yellow Wallpaper remains a powerful exploration of timeless themes, including women’s inequality and the often-silenced issues of postpartum depression and the psychological pressures of motherhood. These are topics that are still not openly discussed enough in our society.
In this production, we have sought to delve into the central character’s psychology through innovative digital technology. Our projection serves as a window into the tortured mind, offering you an intimate glimpse into her world.
Our exceptional performers, Aurélia Thiérrée, who delivers a haunting and emotionally charged monologue, and Fukiko Takase, who masterfully connects two distinct spaces, will guide you through a journey that explores the depths of the human psyche and the intricate struggles faced by women in an era when their voices were too often suppressed.
Thank you for joining us on this extraordinary journey.
Anda Winters Artistic Director The Coronet TheatreWritten in 1892, Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s novella pioneered a different way of thinking. It deeply affected generations of women, allowing them to more openly discuss mental health and post-natal depression. The Yellow Wallpaper offered a new way of writing from an internal and subjective perspective. For me, and many others, this seminal feminist text explores what it means to be in a corset of society’s expectations.
The Coronet Theatre presents a performance across both the auditorium and the studio for the first time ever, linking the two spaces through the medium of live video. We made the decision to stage this intensely singular, semiautobiographical story with two performers. Presented in juxtaposition, and at times in harmony, Fukiko and Aurelia reflect the duality of the protagonist’s inner and outer existence.
We explore the timeless struggles that women face in performing their life in society and what it means to occupy a woman’s ‘role’.
In order to capture the spirit of this story, it was important to me to preserve the text and present each word intact. With its rich history, The Coronet Theatre felt like the perfect space to honour the impact of this book on all of us.
I’m excited to return here after the success of Youth Without God to present this adaptation and contribute to the building’s cinematic heritage with a production that brings film and theatre together as one.
