The Belt: A captivating journey through history, where Ambiguous Dance Company bridges the past and present, bringing new life to The Coronet Theatre.
The Coronet Theatre’s first immersive event takes you down the candlelit hallways of one of London’s most atmospheric theatres. Ambiguous Dance Company’s exceptional performers bring the hidden spaces to life- from backstage areas and dressing rooms to attics and the majestic rooftop cupola Korea’s leading dance company blends a spectrum of movement styles, from contemporary dance to street, creating fluid, dynamic performances that defy classification. Their pulsating choreography infuses this beautifully restored Victorian icon with the vibrant energy of modern Korea.
The Belt culminates in a brand-new high octane full-length piece on The Coronet’s main stage. Ambiguous Dance company, celebrated for its groundbreaking work on international stages, takes inspiration from the pioneering spirit of the UK during the theatre’s founding era. This bold performance reflects on innovation- both past and presentthrough the lens of today’s most creative and vibrant cultures.
Choreographer Boram Kim’s describes his vision: “Dance is like drawing with time In The Belt, we explore how vastly different histories- those of The Coronet Theatre and Ambiguous Dance Company- can merge in a shared space, and what future visions emerge from this convergence. ” Thu 10 - Sat 14 Sep

Ambiguous gained global recognition through their collaboration with pop sensation Coldplay, their wildly popular Higher Power video which achieved over 600 million views on YouTube, as well as their collaborations with Gucci and BMW, reinforcing their status as one the country’s most prominent collectives. Founded by choreographer Boram Kim and dancer Kyeongmin Jang in 2008, the name of the group perfectly describes the “undefinable” characteristics of their genre-defying dance.
The first part of The Belt, titled The Past, takes place in five unexplored rooms in the backstage areas of The Coronet Throughout these historic spaces, the audience will witness some of Ambiguous Dance Company’s most iconic pieces from their repertoire.
The audience is divided into five groups, each exploring a different area of the theatre. Each space holds its own story, and as the guests move through them, new experiences unfold The dancers take the guests on a special journey to transcend both time and space together.
The five performances occur simultaneously The following rooms do not have to be seen in any particular order.
The “Room of Communication” reflects Ambiguous Dance Company’s philosophy: “All humans should communicate through dance.”
The VIP bar room was once a basement housing coal boilers and heat exchangers, remnants of which can still be seen today.
In the “Room of Creation,” the guests will experience Boléro, Ambiguous Dance Company’s first work, which explores the relationship between music and dance This piece holds deep symbolic meaning for the company.
The bar space was originally used as the stalls level of the theatre, with the floor sloping towards the stage. With the original sloping floor intact, it now serves as the main bar, a place for audience members to relax and unwind
The “Room of Struggle and Solitude,” the basement, features Coexistence and Mistake, two pieces that choreographer Boram Kim created during his younger years when he found himself in moments of solitude and darkness.
The somber atmosphere of the basement complements the deep emotional resonance of the works. Notably, the basement once served as an air raid shelter for local residents during WWII to escape German bombings.
In the “Room of Persistence,”, the audience will see a performance of Linguistics, an experimental piece that expresses a wide range of music using only four distinct movements.
The Club Room was originally the ensemble dressing room Noticeably, there are remnants of the old plumbing system on the walls, and wartime drawings, including one of a Spitfire fighter plane. The room is occasionally used for VIP events, and much of its original character has been preserved.
The “Room of Identity” is located at the highest point of the building – the Cupola
The final song from Ambiguous Dance Company’s signature piece, Body Concert, features the Korean folk song, Arirang. This performance is an exploration of freedom and identity, expressing the journey of finding one ” s true self through dance.

“For me, the artist is at the heart of the programme, and I work closely with the makers of the pieces I bring to London, sometimes watching and encouraging them for years. In this increasingly fractious world, I feel strongly that one of the greatest uniting forces is the international language of and desire of all of us to engage with art, whether as a maker or spectator.
My goal is to fill the theatre spaces – the Main House, Print Room Studio, and bar – with diverse and wonderful arts from across the world, celebrating all its many forms and the audiences who enjoy them ”
