I am honoured to join Cork International Film Festival as its Patron.
Film festivals have become ever more important places of discovery, where the opportunity for film to tell important stories is truly activated. Talent sits in every corner of our society, and to challenge our ever-more complex and difficult world we need
to encourage creative risk-taking and enable a diversity of voices to enrich and ignite our knowledge and experience. Film can be a great force for good, and film festivals create a unique space for shared experience, to entertain and provoke, to inspire and delight, and to promote thought and action.
This 67th edition places discovery at its core, encouraging us to reimagine our world through a wonderful diversity of features and documentaries from around the world, alongside a thoughtful retrospective on childhood, ‘Wild Child’. A new generation of filmmakers will showcase their work with an extensive shorts programme, and we will proudly present the contribution from this year’s Puttnam Scholars, drawn from all disciplines at University College Cork, demonstrating the opportunity this valuable creative partnership once again offers.
The Festival plays a vital role in the cultural life of Cork, maximising participation for audiences and artists in a shared creative experience. As Patron I am delighted to support the Festival’s continued development and success as it approaches its 70th anniversary in 2025.
We look forward to welcoming you!
It is with great pleasure and anticipation that we invite you to join us in celebrating the 67th edition of Cork International Film Festival, which the City Council is truly proud to support. Cork has long been a city that embraces its unique culture and through the arts, the city and its people find expression for layers of our shared lives in this place. As the past few years have demonstrated, the value of arts in our lives has never been so apparent. Cork is renowned for its resilience, creativity and independent spirit, qualities that underpin our internationally respected film festival. Built on 67 years of legacy, Ireland’s first and largest film festival will showcase the very best in Irish and international film, enhancing the city, and welcoming all.
We are really delighted to return with a full 11-day Festival in cinemas this year, following two years of delivering different hybrid formats of the Festival, as we responded to the ever-changing landscape of the Pandemic. At 67 years young, we are proud that our Festival continues to be pioneering, innovative, inclusive and welcoming, and we hope that you will find all of that and much more in this year’s rich and diverse programme.
Cork International Film Festival’s mission is to present Ireland’s most exciting, diverse and ambitious annual film festival, connecting Cork audiences and artists to the world, and bringing the world to Cork through a carefully curated selection of the best films. We champion the power of film to tell great stories that challenge and delight, spark conversation, encourage action, and create a unique cultural experience of discovery, rooted in Cork, open to the world.
We hope that you will explore the programme and discover much to entice you to the cinema in November. Alongside many fresh new voices, there are award-winning, world-class features and documentaries from Cannes, Berlin, Rotterdam, and Venice, and films from acclaimed filmmakers such as François Ozon, Laura Poitras, and Sam Mendes, with no less than 80 Irish feature premieres at the Festival - come and see it first in Cork!
You’ll find an expanded focus on films and activities for young people and families, including accessible sensory-friendly screenings, amplifying our yearround outreach programmes, particularly supporting young people’s mental well-being through film. Alongside our Family Gala, Roald Dahl’s Matilda the
Musical, our Animation Gala celebrates the best in magical film storytelling with Strange World. This year’s Cine Concert, A Trip to the Moon, will appeal to all ages, with a wonderful commissioned score from award-winning Cork composers Irene Buckley and Linda Buckley, performed by local music students.
For many aspiring and emerging filmmakers, our Festival provides the access route to the sector; we actively encourage filmmakers to submit their films, to join our Industry Days, to meet their peers and dare to dream. Great careers start in Cork.
We are committed to advancing our sustainability journey and to using the emotional capacity of film to stimulate and influence change; our Green Screen strand this year explores human impact on the environment, climate action and sustainable fashion.
We want the Festival to be a welcoming and inclusive experience, with a programme that reflects the diversity of our local and global society, and a place that encourages engagement with all of our community. We could not be prouder to open the 67th edition with Frank Berry’s stunning and timely drama, Aisha, a quietly powerful film about belonging, love and sanctuary.
We hope that the Festival will be a memorable meeting point, a destination of discovery and a springboard for new experiences. We can’t wait to welcome you.
“There can be nothing as enjoyable as attending the cinema in person. It is great to see cinema back up and running and your Festival continuing to go from strength to strength.” Michael D. Higgins, President of Ireland / Uachtarán na hÉireann

Aisha charts the experiences of a young Nigerian woman (an outstanding performance by Letitia Wright) as she seeks asylum in Ireland. Caught in limbo for years in the Direct Provision system, Aisha develops an unlikely friendship with kind Conor Healy (Josh O’Connor), a former prisoner now employed by her accommodation centre. Aisha and Conor’s burgeoning friendship soon looks in jeopardy as Aisha’s future in Ireland comes under threat. Frank Berry’s (Michael Inside, I Used to Live Here) beautifully observed and acted drama is immensely moving, a delicate and intimate character study, and a quietly powerful critique on bureaucratic systems which exacerbate the trauma of those seeking refuge. FC
Academy® Award-winning documentarist Laura Poitras’ portrait of American photographer Nan Goldin won the Golden Lion Award at this year’s Venice Film Festival. This multi-layered documentary includes rare footage and intimate interviews with Goldin, and covers not just her own life journey, her famous friends and iconic photographic work, but also her fight against the Sackler family and their company, Purdue Pharma, maker of OxyContin. AK
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed adventure Strange World introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures.
The voice cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal as Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; Dennis Quaid as Searcher’s larger than-life explorer father, Jaeger; Jaboukie Young-White as Searcher’s 16-year-old son, Ethan, who longs for adventure; Gabrielle Union as Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia’s fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world. Helmed by Don Hall (Oscar®-winning Big Hero 6, Raya and the Last Dragon) and co-director/writer Qui Nguyen (co-writer Raya and the Last Dragon), and produced by Roy Conli (Oscar®-winning Big Hero 6, Tangled).
Matilda Wormwood (impressive newcomer Alisha Weir) is a little girl with big curiosity, a sharp mind and a vivid imagination - and the worst parents in the world. While her parents (played by Andrea Riseborough and Stephen Graham) content themselves with trashy TV and dodgy money-making schemes, she loves to lose herself in the pages of her beloved books, and think up cheeky acts of rebellion and revenge. On meeting inspirational teacher, Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch),
Matilda begins conjuring her own fantastical tales. She dares to take a stand against her parents and head teacher Miss Trunchbull (Emma Thompson), to fight for what’s right and change her story, with miraculous results. Adapted from the Tony and Olivier award-winning musical. FC
Actor Alisha Weir, who plays Matilda, will be in attendance to introduce the screening.
Set in an English seaside town in the early 1980s, Academy Award®-winning director Sam Mendes delivers a powerful and poignant story about human connection and the magic of cinema. Manager Hilary (an outstanding, brave performance by Olivia Colman), and her colleagues, (a stellar ensemble cast including Colin Firth and Toby Jones), are sprucing up their seafront picture palace in preparation for a regional premiere of Chariots of Fire. Outside, skinheads are on the rampage as a rising far-right presence seeps into the dilapidated town. Kind new recruit Stephen (BAFTA winner Micheal Ward) befriends troubled
Hilary, a relationship that both warms and breaks the heart. The film is at once beautifully nostalgic, shining a light on the wonder of cinema, and a surprisingly unflinching look at the realities of mental illness.
Empire of Light is a reminder that cinema is a space for collective experience, offering beautiful tales we take away for the rest of our lives. FC
The winners of the CIFF2022 Features Awards will be announced at the Closing Gala.

A cine concert is always a cause for celebration, bringing some extra sparkle to memorable classic films. This year’s presentation does indeed do that! Award-winning Cork composers Irene Buckley and Linda Buckley return to the Festival to present a brand new score for George Méliès’ seminal short film A Trip to the Moon. This new score was composed in collaboration with, and will be performed by, students from Coláiste Choilm, Ballincollig, Cork. Accompanying the performance is a special selection of classic short films from early cinema, which will delight the child in us all.
This Special Presentation will include screenings of The Astronomer’s Dream (Georges Méliès, France, 1898), Steamboat Willie (Walt Disney, Ub Iwerks, USA, 1928), The Skeleton Dance (Walt Disney, USA, 1929) and Cops (Buster Keaton, USA, 1922).

Uncompromising cult classic and quite simply the greatest Jamaican film of
time!
Director Perry Henzell’s 1972 debut celebrates 50 years and was first screened at Cork International Film Festival just six days after its Kingston premiere. An unflinching tale of Ivan (reggae icon Jimmy Cliff) as the innocent country boy corrupted by the harsh brutality of Kingston life, the soundtrack introduced the world to reggae music long before many had heard of Bob Marley. CMC
Continue the celebration with us at Wavelength at Cyprus Avenue for an after-party with some Jamaican-inspired tunes. See corkfilmfest.org for event and ticket details

A drinks reception will conclude the event 16:00-17:00, followed by the screening of Abigail Disney’s new feature documentary The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales at 17:30 at the Gate Cinema (see p. 25).
In addition to the in person offering for Doc Day 2022, the Festival will host a series of online sessions, complimenting this year’s non-fiction programme and encompassing in-depth filmmaker conversations and case studies. Visit corkfilmfest.org/industry for further details and to book. Presented in partnership with Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland, and supported by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland.
IGNITE is a bilingual talent development programme led by Cork International Film Festival and Docs Ireland, directed towards emerging Irish and Northern Irish documentary filmmakers embarking on their first or second non-fiction feature film.
A joint initiative of Cork International Film Festival & Docs Ireland, Belfast, supported by TG4, the Arts Council of Ireland, Screen Ireland, Screen Skillnet, Northern Ireland Screen, and Arts & Business NI.

Just like cinema screenings, online screenings have limited capacity so we recommend pre-booking. See corkfilmfest.org to book and watch.
