New Year - New Rules

Any Difference? By Trevor Goodbun

On the 3rd January 2018 a new set of rules came into place as a result of Mifid ll. This isn’t the second edition of a syfy movie that you have never heard of, but a piece of EU legislation known as Markets in Financial Instruments Directive. Apparently, it extends to 1.7million paragraphs and the Financial Times has described it as the biggest reform for a decade. It affects finances services organisations from the biggest banks, stockbrokers and pension funds right through to a small IFA firm like us. As with many of these things the objective is very simple. to improve consumer protection and transparency. I am sure that no-one could object to those goals but I am left wondering in practice if the new rules will make much difference at all. Like most financial advisers we want to do the best for our customers but the new rules will not add any protection from the very small minority who don’t want to play by the rules. Let me give you an example. One of the requirements is that costs have to be separated out and provided to the customer in many cases this will comprise of a platform fee, a product fee and the adviser fee. Think of the platform as a box to keep money in, the product as the money in the box, and the advice being what box to buy on what to keep in it. As well as showing the costs separately the total

28

cost has to be shown. I can’t see why anyone can object to this, why shouldn’t customers see what they are being charged. However the bit that had me and a group of like minded advisers whom I trust scratching our heads was that we couldn’t see much difference to what we do now. As far as I can see the illustrations I give out now meet the new requirements. The few new version I have seen so far seem to be a little clearer, but it’s still over complex and the content is the same. Then I received an illustration for a customer who until now dealt with a provider directly. This gave no indication of the costs at all, let alone a break down. So, whilst I am muttering away about admin for admin’s sake it appears that actually there is a requirement to make sure that everyone is told what the costs are. As I have found so often over the years for those of us who at least try to get it right, changes like this won’t make a much of a difference but what about the tiny minority who are reluctant to show what costs are. That will be as easy as it ever was. They just won’t give out, or skip over the complex explanation of costs! Emotional Well-Being

Spring In My Step Psychotherapist Kirsty Haynes offers advice and tips to look after your emotional well-being

February brings us snowdrops, Valentine’s Day and then just around the corner it’s all new buds and birdsong. Spring is a time to look forward, be optimistic and be out and about doing things, enjoying spending time with others.

According to the Jo Cox Commission Report of 2017 loneliness kills more people than smoking. When people are feeling low or anxious or stressed, loneliness can be a further burden, dragging the person down.

Valentine’s Day in particular brings with it a great emphasis on romance and affection for another person. To the extent that those without a Valentine may begin to feel left out and lonely with some beginning to dread the day.

Personal social connection is commonly acknowledged as a vital human requirement, so become interested in the people around you and make that extra effort to notice, smile, be friendly and then ask, “How’s it going?” or “What sort of things do you like doing?” or “What about coming out?” The great thing about doing this is that you might make someone smile, be happier and become reconnected, but you never know you may make a new friend as well.

We humans are social creatures and there is an intuitive yearning to belong. Being with people is essential for emotional wellbeing. Lots of isolated individuals are inclined not to admit that they are lonesome. Loneliness can creep up on you. Friends move, get married, get busy at work and even pass away. Some people don’t realise they are drifting into isolation and amazingly some people pretend they are not lonely; being afraid of becoming tainted as ‘Billy no mates’.

Kirsty Haynes has a degree in Psychotherapy. If you’re struggling with emotional issues, email info@emotionalskills.uk. Visit www.emotionalskills.uk

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Dr Sanjay Gheyi

A No-Knife, three-dimensional, natural face-lift using fillers or your own fat Two main characteristics of a beautiful face are fullness and flawless skin. At Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic we have many treatments including lasers to provide skin rejuvenation and even generate new skin. But how can we provide fullness? We have realised that a number of changes happen in the face due to ageing. Most important of these is a loss of volume. This is often more pronounced than loss of skin elasticity. So in this case adding volume to the face results in a youthful look, whereas skin removal can result in tightness but not a youthful look. Fat is your own natural filler. Fat is not merely a passive ‘filler', It is an active metabolic tissue and a rich source of various growth factors and stem cells. Use of fat to fill areas of volume loss is not new but we have new techniques and refinements which make it very successful. This procedure is very attractive if you are also considering body contouring or liposuction. Recent problems with breast implants have made fat transfer procedure attractive for breast enhancement as well. What happens with facial ageing? The old method of looking at facial ageing was based on a gravitational model: that all things fall over time. The new model of the facial ageing process focuses on the primary importance of how the face deflates and loses volume decade after decade. What was once thought to be sagging has now been understood to be caused by facial deflation. A facelift without volume restoration looks artificial. Replacing lost fat results in a natural look.

Juvederm that are available for facial rejuvenation. Each of these products has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. An ideal substance would be readily available, inexpensive, long-lasting, natural-feeling, and would not cause adverse reactions. Your own tissue meets these requirements. Since it is your own body fat there is no chance of allergic reactions. Some of the injected fat can be reabsorbed by the body and more than one session may be required. What happens during the procedure? This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The process requires gentle fat removal using low-vacuum limited liposuction and the use of thin, delicate, non-traumatic fine tubes to protect the survival of each harvested living fat cell. The fat cells are then purified and slowly injected using a small syringe and cannula. Tiny droplets are placed throughout the tissues assuring that each transferred fat cell will have an adequate blood supply to achieve the permanent survival of the injected fat cells. Facial areas that can be treated with fat injections include the temples, eyebrows, marionette lines, under eyes (tear trough), jaw line, nose to mouth lines, cheeks, chin and scars due to acne, chickenpox, injury or surgery. This provides a three dimensional volumetric face lift.

What will my recovery be like? Patients who have fat transfer experience a quick recovery. You are advised to rest for a few hours after the procedure. After 48 hours you may increase your activity as tolerated. Most patients are back to work within 2 to 5 days. What is fat transfer? Refrain from heavy exercise for a few weeks. Fat transfer is the transfer of fat from one part of Some amount of swelling and bruising can your body to another. A doctor must carefully occur. Ice compresses are applied for 24-48 harvest fat cells that are then injected to firm, fill hours to minimize inflammation. Discourage out or plump up other body part like face, hands, massage and excessive facial animation cheeks, breasts or buttocks. This is also known immediately following fat grafting. These as fat injections or autologous fat grafting. restrictions are to prevent migration of fat away from the desired areas of treatment. How are fat injections different from commercial fillers? Call 0800 0430737 or log on to website There are many commercial injectable fillers www.coltishallclinic.co.uk for more such as Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra and information or to book a appointment.
