DaisyCaparas:TheWoman BehindTheCounter

For years, Daisy Caparas has been the “Tita Daisy” of School of the Infant Jesus EZEE’s canteen. What sets her apart is not just the warm smile or the mouthwatering viands she serves, but also the way she radiates the positive vibe she gives through her daily interaction with everyone As the wife of the school’s security guard, Daisy eventually ended up running the canteen when the opportunity knocked on her door wayback 2019 “When my husband started working here as the guard, I thought it would be nice to have a job on the campustoo”sheexplains

PhilippineEducationSysteminCrisis:TheNeedforUrgent Reform

The results of the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment(PISA)haveonceagainhighlightedapersistentcrisisin thePhilippineeducationsystem.AccordingtodatafromOECD,over 7,000Filipinostudentsparticipatedintheassessment,representing nearly 1.8 million fifteen-year-olds. While the country saw slight improvements compared to PISA 2018, its average scores remain alarmingly low 355 in Mathematics, 356 in Science, and 347 in Reading. Worse, Filipino students ranked among the bottom four in the newly added Creative Thinking Assessment, scoring only 14 points,astarkcontrasttoSingapore’s41points

These results are not just numbers; they reveal the failure of an outdated system that prioritizes memorization over critical and creativethinking Insteadoffosteringinnovation, thecurrentsystem forces students into rigid academic molds, leaving little room for exploration,problem-solving,andindependentthought.Ifeducation is meant to prepare students for the future, how can they thrive when they are trained only to recall answers rather than develop ideas?

The education sector must rethink its priorities. Instead ofmerelyteachingforstandardizedtests, schoolsshould cultivate curiosity, creativity, and strategic thinking. This meansintroducinglessonsandactivitiesthatencourage problem-solving,promotingstudent-leddiscussions,and creating environments where learners feel safe to express themselves. Schools should invest in clubs and organizations that nurture talent, improve social skills, and enhance real-world competencies beyond academics

As Elizabeth Warren once said, "A good education is a foundationforabetterfuture."Butthatfuturewillremain outofreachifthesystemcontinuestoignoretheurgent needforreform Thecountrycannotaffordtoletanother generation fall behind due to an ineffective, outdated curriculum. It is time for bold changes before our students, andultimatelyournation, paytheprice.

E D I T O R I A L

On May 12, 2025, over 68 million Filipinos will have the power to decide the future of our country. The midterm elections will determine who will sit in positions of power 12 senators, 254 district representatives, 63 partylist representatives, and thousands of local officials, from governors to councilors. But the question remains: will we use this powerwisely?

Votingismorethanjustaright;itis a responsibility It is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and our very own 1987 PhilippineConstitution Yet,despite this, many Filipinos remain unawareofthetrueweightoftheir vote Worse, vote buying, empty promises, and political gimmickry continuetoplagueourelections.

WakeUp:VoteWisely,OurFuture DependsonIt

It is time to wake up. The leader we choose will dictate our nation's course Political positions are not prizes to be won, nor should they be given to those who treat governance as a playground for experimentation. We do not need another celebrityturned-politician who lacks the expertise to govern effectively Politics is not a stage, and our country is not a test subject. We need leaders with integrity, competence, andaclearvision notindividualswho see public office as an opportunity for wealth and influence.

TheBurdenofRisingInflation:ACallforUrgentAction

InflationinthePhilippineshas reached alarming levels, burdeningmillionsofFilipinos who now struggle to afford even the most basic necessities As the prices of food, fuel, andtransportation continue to soar, the gap between the cost of living and the average household income grows wider, pushing more families to the brink of financial hardship. What was once affordable is now a luxury, and for many, survival has become a daily battle

The causes of inflation are complex, driven by both global and local factors International conflicts, supply chain disruptions, and fluctuating fuel prices trigger price hikes, while natural disasters, weak agricultural output, and inefficient economic policies further aggravate the crisis at home But no matterthecause, thereality remains: Filipinos are paying the price in every waypossible.

The government must act now. Short-term solutions like price stabilization measures, financial aid for vulnerable sectors, and supportforlocalfarmersare crucial to easing the immediate burden. But band-aid solutions are not enough. Long-term strategies, suchasinvesting in agriculture, infrastructure, and sustainable economic policies, are necessary to build a resilient economy that can withstand future crises

A single vote might seem small, but when millions make informed choices, realchangehappens. We have seen the consequences of poor leadership, and we cannot afford to repeat history. Let us be politically and socially aware. Let us demand better Let us refuse tobeblindfollowersof thosewho donotdeservetolead.

Gising! The future is in ourhands.Votewisely.
